Don't listen to the low reviewers
By Dante
This book is excellent. It goes over every bit of Swedish grammar, with examples. The book is logically arranged for easy reference, with separate sections for nouns, verbs, adjectives, conjunctions, etc. To the one reviewer who said knowledge of English grammar terms is necessary: no, it isn't. The book has a glossary in the back that explains any linguistic terms used, from the most advanced to ones as simple as "noun".

I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn Swedish. Linguophiles will love the presentation, but anyone can appreciate a quick course that presents all you need to know about Swedish grammar in under 100 pages.

Excellent resource for Swedish Grammar
By Amazon Customer
This tiny volume has everything you really need to understand Swedish grammar. It covers all the aspects briefly, and in no more complicated terms than a textbook (which are hard to find for Swedish for some reason). There are usage examples, irregular verb tables, and some details on Swedish punctuation. Funny how only one reviewer so far has found the definitions of grammatical terms in the back. As for the 'molecular structure' review, pay that foolishness no mind. If you are looking for a textbook, look elsewhere (and let me know if you find a good one). This is a reference book, and a very good one.

Geronimo: My Life (Native American), by Geronimo

In this, one of Native American history's most extraordinary documents, a legendary warrior and shaman recounts the beliefs and customs of his people. Completely and utterly authentic, its captivating narrator is the most famous member of the Apache tribe: Geronimo.
The spiritual and intellectual leader of the American Indians who defended their land from both Mexico and the United States for many years, Geronimo surrendered in 1886. Two decades later, while under arrest, he told his story through a native interpreter to S. M. Barrett, an Oklahoma school superintendent. Barrett explains in his introduction, "I wrote to President Roosevelt that here was an old Indian who had been held a prisoner of war for twenty years and had never been given a chance to tell his side of the story, and asked that Geronimo be granted permission to tell for publication, in his own way, the story of his life."
This remarkable testament is the result. It begins with Geronimo's retelling of an Apache creation myth and his descriptions of his youth and family. He explains his military tactics as well as traditional practices, including hunting and religious rituals, and reflects upon his hope for the survival of his people and their culture.

About the Author
Geronimo (1829 1909) was a leader and medicine man of the Chiricahua Apache tribe. He fought against both the United States and Mexico as they encroached into his tribal lands, known famously as the Apache Wars. He eventually surrendered to the U.S. army and was sent to Fort Sill, Oklahoma, where he was kept as a prisoner of war until his death.

Very interesting
By Anne-Marie G
A very interesting little book. Geronimo is given the ability to voice his version of events in his life. And as they are told in a very direct and unembellished manner, one tends to be inclined to view him as a very reliable source for those events. The person who interviewe him and is responsible for transcribing those into a book provides interesting commentary, and occasional little factual footnotes to the text, but otherwise rarely interferes with Geronimo telling his own story.

Well worth reading, it isn't very long and not too hard to follow.

A Savage Way of Life
By Richard Zeile
This is a great primary document as well as a fascinating story which almost did not get produced. Geronimo lived under house arrest (we might say parole) in Oklahoma and was visited by a native American school principal. The conversation pleased Geronimo so that the chief offered to relate his life story. The Army corporal in charge felt this inappropriate as making a hero out of a war criminal and so refused. The principal appealed to President Theodore Roosevelt who issued appropriate orders allowing the project to proceed. Thereafter, on several sessions, the Principal (& translator) and a transcriptionist met with the chief in various places- home, field, etc.- to record Geronimo's recollections.
It is a window into another way of life that Americans have tried to deny. Geronimo begins with the Apache creation myth which explains the creation of the Apache tribes but not of the other tribes with which they interacted. This is our signal as to the perspective of Geronimo's people (and people in general), narrowly focused on one's own people/needs/identity which determines the moral perspective. After 20 years in captivity, the chief has already begun to transcend this perspective. But the way of life to which Geronimo bears witness has characterized many peoples throughout the world. In a world of scarcity, people WILL die. Which people survive is often determined by their willingness take from others, even kill others to get it. Edomites are described as such in the Bible (and their territory is similar in many ways to Arizona); Caesar and Jefferson had to fight wars against peoples who made their living from piracy.
Geronimo speaks with respect of his father who was a leading warrior in their division of Apaches, having learned much from him. He died just as Geronimo was achieving recognition as a warrior himself so that the support of his mother fell to him. In time, he won a bride with whom he had three children. But while away on a raid, Mexicans attacked their camp and killed his young family and mother. Geronimo relates the act of burning all their possessions, apparently the general practice. This devastating experience defined his life's work, revenge on the Mexicans.
There follows accounts of many raids, not all of which were successful. As few as 3, as many as 30-some, warriors would go out to capture provisions, cattle, blankets, horses. Many times Geronimo had only his club and boldness and surprise would enable him to win, or at least escape. Many times he was wounded, but usually did not require him to miss the raiding season. For raiding usually ceased for the winter, and the tribe would subsist on what had been gathered or seized during the previous season. Several times, Geronimo relates, Mexicans raided their camp and took or burned their provisions. Like fining prostitutes, it did not discourage the practice but drove them on to more to make up the loss. He also takes pains to assure us that he and his warriors did not mutilate their enemies without good reason, unlike other tribes who did this regularly.
When the U.S. Army moved into the area, Geronimo's way of life became untenable. He negotiated with the General in charge and thought he would remain in his ancestral lands. But that general had made promises that higher ups did not see the need to honor, and the chief was imprisoned for a time in Florida, then settled in Oklahoma. His bitterness against this General is pronounced in the narrative.
Geronimo's comments about whites since are surprisingly favorable. He was a celebrity at the 1900 St. Louis Fair and made good money signing autographs, among other things. He had remarried (several wives), and one he sent back to the ancestral territory with her children, while at least one other lived with him in the house he had in Oklahoma.
Although not admitted explicitly, Geronimo concedes that in certain respects his life was better (safer, more secure) as a captive. He was baptized as a Christian, but this does seem to have entailed a change in thinking about God or morals. His love is for his people and his hope, which seems to him remote, is that they may return to the ancestral land.
My final impression is one of ambivalence. Geronimo led a life marked by courage, loyalty, independence, pride, excitement, and tragedy. He was forced into a life of security, subordination, and submission. Some at the time thought that was too good for one who had killed so many over his lifetime. But it was the bargain the chief made to leave that lifestyle to spare the lives of others should it continue. I chose the title "Savage Way of Life" not to demean Geronimo or his people (It is clear that it applied to the Mexicans and even Americans the Apache had to deal with), but to make clear that the nomadic way of life, dependent on raiding, could not continue. Like the heroes of Homer, we may admire their virtues and qualities, but must never imagine that their life-style was desirable.

Words of a natural born American
By D. Hunt
It is truly a sad day in our history that we felt it necessary to capture and incarcerate ANY native American. But on the other hand, we are so fortunate that S.M.Barrett had the foresight and the opportunity to interview and permanently record Geronimo's words before they were lost forever. This is a small book and an easy read but it is packed full of Geronimo's experiences and thoughts regarding not only the white soldiers but also the Mexicans who made his life and that of his people miserable. I would recommend this book to anyone. It will hold a permanent spot in my library to be read again and passed on to my grandchild.

"A playful and engaging journey through the mind of the child―and the childlike―to answer an important God-question. Delights the eyes and the imagination. Every 'child of God' will read, re-read and love this book!"
―Sister Rose Raymond Wagner, OSF, retreat and spiritual director

"Sometimes, the deepest spiritual truths can be buried not only in what we tell our children about God, but how we tell our children about God. Here, gently, quietly, in a lullaby of love, Joan Sauro speaks to God's unceasing attention to us―and to all the details of the world."
―Gary Schmidt, coauthor of In God’s Hands

“With peaceful images and soothing, poetic words, the reader is lulled quietly to sleep, assured that God is but a whisper away. Delightfully told by 'loved ones,’ this comforting bedtime story is for all children, and for the child within each one of us.”
―Nancy Sohn Swartz, author of In Our Image and How Did the Animals Help God?

“Beautiful ... appealing.... The best part about this book is its simple, rhythmic text.... A great read-along or read-aloud book, especially for bedtime.”
―John S. Mogabgab, editor, Weavings

Children are curious and ask questions: Who made God? Where is God? Does God Ever Sleep?

Joan Sauro responds to the last question with engaging genile, poetic words and images that reassure children of God's words, "I will be with you."

This is God in a human, imaginative form, suggesting divine protection for young children and all of God's creation, a lullaby for nighttime.

Maidens in tasseled gowns and elaborate headpieces. Jousting knights in armor with swords and breastplates. Young men in flowing robes and wide-brimmed hats, others on horseback with decorative trappings. This superb collection displays a detailed gallery of costumes worn in the eleventh through fifteenth century, with captions translated from the original French of scholar Camille Bonnard and magnificent illustrations by Roman artist and engraver Paul Mercuri. Historically authentic, the images are based on figures from period paintings, frescoes, sculptures, and illuminated manuscripts in museums and churches of Italy's culturally rich cities, including Milan, Florence, and Rome.
Reproduced directly from a nineteenth-century edition, this illustrated study includes 120 splendid full-color plates showcasing head-to-toe apparel worn by citizens of all classes: nobility, the bourgeois, soldiers, ecclesiastics, and others. More than a history of fashion, the clothing in this treasury reveals the background of the wearer—from his finances to his social standing. Beautifully rendered, this volume is a glorious resource for historians, illustrators, theatrical designers, and anyone with an interest in the history of fashion. Includes captions and a new introduction.

Nice reinaissance fashion compilation
By Roque
This is a nice set of fashion illustrations mainly regarding the renaissance and late medieval periods, based on Camille Bonnard's compilation. All the ilustrations are historically correct and they are mostly (but not all) Italians. It contains 120 plates with no text or information appart from a descriptive caption. Don't expect to find any historical explanation in this book, since that is not its intention. Although it is in no way the ultimate costume reference guide, it still remains as a fine aditional source for historical fashion that would probably be useful for any astist interested in that period.

When I bought this book I was able to get it "used" for a very low price.

Gorgeous illustrations!
By Rochelle
I love this book! Nice, large illustrations of the clothing. The colors are terrific. What I love the most are the illustrations of hats and hairstyles. Very inspiring! The book is smaller than some of the others in my collection on the topic, but it really packs in a lot of great images.

Concrete and Culture: A Material History, by Adrian Forty

Despite its ancient Roman origins, concrete is considered the ultimate modern material, used everywhere in construction today: the equivalent of three tonnes of concrete per person on the planet is produced each year. Used in our pavements, roads, tunnels and walls, concrete surrounds us wherever we go and polarizes opinion, provoking intense loathing in some and fervent passion in others.
Concrete and Culture breaks new ground by charting concrete’s effects on culture since its reinvention in the modern period, examining the ways it has changed our understanding of nature, of time and of materiality. This book discusses architects’ responses to and uses of concrete while also taking into account the role it has played in politics, literature, cinema and labour-relations, as well as in present day arguments about sustainability.
Crucial to the construction of some of the world’s most avant-garde buildings but also blamed for making all places look alike, concrete continues to be as controversial as ever. In this book Adrian Forty takes the reader across Europe, North and South America and the Far East, reflecting on the global consequences of the material. Concrete and Culture is a uniquely innovative historical account of the part played by an often despised substance in people’s relationships to their physical surroundings.

Review
“This book fully succeeds in portraying the most emblematic material of modern culture. Concrete is seemingly condemned to transformations, easily slipping into the role of timber or stone, with no clear identity of its own. With his engaging scholarship, Adrian Forty takes us beyond the merely concrete, showing a material that does not fit into pre-cast categories, as a projection screen of Japanese, Brazilian or Swiss identities, of fears and pleasures, a source of dislike and fascination since its invention.” (Ákos Moravánszky, ETH Zurich)

“This erudite, insightful and wide-ranging study takes the field of material history in new directions. By focusing on concrete—the ubiquitous marker of modernity—we are taken through a labyrinth of intersecting cultural and political developments that range across architecture, cinema, photography, planning, and a host of other fields.” (Matthew Gandy, University College London)

“Forty offers a historical account of how concrete has played a part in humans’ relationship to their physical surroundings and the global consequences. By taking into account the role concrete has played in areas like politics, literature, cinema, and sustainability, he gives readers a new viewpoint about this material.” (Choice)

“Forty admits that he initially saw Concrete and Culture as an ‘entertainment’, an enjoyable project that allowed him to travel globally, but that he ended up grappling with a set of problems that were both intellectually difficult and full of rich cultural associations. Taking on a topic that has for the most part—until very recently—been the subject of technical literature, he again shows us a new way of looking at modernity, via one of its most characteristic material manifestations."
  (Oxford Art Journal)

What is the relationship of the individual to the state? What is the ideal state, and how can it bring about the most desirable life for its citizens? What sort of education should it provide? What is the purpose of amassing wealth? These are some of the questions Aristotle attempts to answer in one of the most intellectually stimulating works.
Both heavily influenced by and critical of Plato's Republic and Laws, Politics represents the distillation of a lifetime of thought and observation. "Encyclopaedic knowledge has never, before or since, gone hand in hand with a logic so masculine or with speculation so profound," says H. W. C. Davis in his introduction. Students, teachers, and scholars will welcome this inexpensive new edition of the Benjamin Jowett translation, as will all readers interested in Greek thought, political theory, and depictions of the ideal state.

From Library Journal
The past few years have seen a spate of new translations of classic texts in philosophy, in part because of more complete texts on which to base the translations and in part because of a desire to render the texts in a more contemporary English. Simpson (classics and philosophy, CUNY) has produced a fresh and lively translation that is perhaps more logically ordered. He makes a strong case for rearranging the standard order of the books of the Politics to provide a sequence more in keeping with Aristotle's intentions, positioning Books 7 and 8 to follow Book 3. The text begins with a translation of Book 10, Chapter 9 of the Nicomachean Ethics, which Simpson argues is a precursor to the Politics. A comparison with standard translations, such as those of Jowett and Barker, indicates that Simpson put much effort into this version and clarified a number of points that earlier translations left unclear. An excellent addition to all academic and major public libraries.?Terry C. Skeats, Bishop's Univ. Lib., Lennoxville, Quebec

"Stalley...has...subjected the actual translation to `some fairly drastic revision'...the result is much greater clarity when it comes to both the Greek text and to exegesis of that text. The end-product is a most distinguished contribution to a collection whose prices seem to defy an economic return but I'm not complaining." --Greece and Rome Reviews 23/01/1996

The birth of systematic political thought
By Guillermo Maynez
Just as in most of his other books, in "The Politics", Aristotle becomes the founder of organized, ordered, and systematic thought. Of course, he was not the first philosopher to think about the organization and governance of societies, but his work is the first classification and comparison of different possible systems. As I said in a recent review of Aristotle's "Nicomachean Ethics", his greatest originality is the stripping off of myth, legend, metaphor and poetics from his exposition of the subject. This is his main difference with his predecessor and teacher, Plato. This makes for a drier reading, but also for a clearer and better organized rendering of his clear thought. It can be said, moreover, that Plato and Aristotle constitute the founding pillars of the two main currents in Western thought: idealism (Plato) vs. realism (Aristotle). Although any tragedies deriving from these sources is, of course, not a responsibility of these great thinkers, it can be said, in general, the following:
The idealist tradition inaugurated by Plato led to the rise of universal, all-encompassing theories. That is, those which assert that there is a single unifying principle tying up together economics, politics, ethics, and social organization, and that this principle (whichever it may be) is suitable for any society at any time and place. Hence, Rousseaunianism, Socialism, Communism.
The "realist" tradition springing from Aristotle simply says that human problems can not be resolved by magical formulas or recipes. Social situations can not be severed from their immediate environment. Aristotle, then, classifies possible types of systems and defines their advantages and disadvantages for different types of societies. His approach, then, is that there can be no universal and general solutions or organizing principles. Aristotle is absolutely practical in his approach, as opposed to the theoretical systems imagined (as opposed to observed) by Plato. Hence: liberalism, Realpolitik, capitalism, democracy (or I should say "capitalisms" and "democracies", since there are very different varieties of these systems). Aristotle examines then distinct kinds of Constitutions, what they require to be effective, and what effects they might bring upon.
Read it, then, for a clear and well-ordered exposition of themes, subthemes, and advice. Here you will find the origin of half of Western political thought. And precisely the half that seems to be winning the race.

Worth the effort...
By B. Alcat
Aristotle was an important thinker, born in 384 BCE at Stagirus (a Greek colony), who is considered by many the founder of the realist tradition in Philosophy. He wrote many noteworthy books, among which "The Politics" stands out. "The Politics" is one of the first books I read at university, and even though it took me a lot of time to read it, I ended up being grateful to the professor that included it as obligatory reading material for History of Political Ideas I :)
In "The Politics", the author begins by analyzing the human being, that is in his opinion a political animal by nature. Afterwards, he explains what are, for him, the origins of the polis: family, small village and then, polis. Aristotle says that even though the polis is the last chronologically, it is all the same the most important, because it is autarchic. The polis (not exactly like our states, but similar to them in some aspects) is a natural community, because it answers to something that human beings need. Only in the polis will men find perfection, only there will they be completely human. Aristotle distinguishes between citizens and non-citizens (the vast majority), and points out that only citizens have political rights. The author delves in many other themes, for example the causes of revolution, the good and bad forms of government, and the "ideal" form of government. What is more, he also considers several constitutions, and talks about the adequate education that forms good citizens for the polis.
Now, why should you read a book that was written many centuries ago and that on top of that isn't especially easy to read?. The answer is quite simple: "The Politics" is worth it. Of course, you will find faults in some of Aristotle's opinions (for instance, he thought that slaves were "live property", and that slavery was a natural institution), but you cannot ignore that most of his book is as relevant today as it was when he wrote it. "The Politics" is a book that teaches the reader to analyze reality, and to watch things differently, from another perspective. It also mentions several times that it is always necessary to take into account the context, because there are not perfect solutions good for every circumstance. Even though that seems merely common sense, it is an often forgotten truth...
On the whole, I can recommend this book to all those who are interested in Political Science, History of Ideas, or simply curious. I can guarantee that if you are patient enough to end it, you will learn a lot.

Wonderful Addition To Any Poli-Sci Library
By Matthew P. Arsenault
Aristotle's The Politics is without a doubt one of the most celebrated works of political science from antiquity. He begins with a description of a state, advances through the numerous types of constitutions, describes the ideal citizen, and defines good government-not to mention numerous other fascinating political insights into the running of a state.
Aristotle's outline for government and state has been influential to political scientists for over 2,400 years. His discussion on the cons of complete unity, as well as his chapter on "the natural and unnatural methods of acquiring goods," certainly must have influenced Karl Marx, and his discussions on the "good of all" certainly led to Mills and Bentham's utilitarianism.
The Penguin Classics edition gives the reader an authoritative, inexpensive copy that is ideal for scholars as well as students. The footnotes are helpful, but not excessive. An excellent purchase all around.

Introduction to German Poetry: A Dual-Language Book (Dover Dual Language German), by Gustave Mathieu

The poems in this anthology represent a panorama of the main trends in the development of the poetry of the German-speaking people. Beginning with a minnesong of the early Middle Ages and a poem of the seventeenth century, the book then focuses on the Age of Goethe (1749-1832). Inspired by Goethe and his contemporaries, German poetry was able to develop according to its own genius and to advance along new lines that eventually led to the period of Expressionism and Post-Expressionism with which this anthology ends.
Included here are the full German texts of 39 poems-lyrics, ballads, philosophical verse, humor, student songs-and three selections from longer works by Goethe, Novalis and Lenau. Some of the other poets represented are Walther von der Vogelweide, Schiller, Hölderlin, Heine, Rilke, Brecht, Hermann Hesse, Stefan George, Gryphius, Platen, Scheffel, Conrad Ferdinand Meyer and Albrecht Haushofer.
For each poem, this book includes an expert literal English translation on the facing page. You'll also find a biographical and critical discussion of each poet, textual information and a portrait of the poet. Here is a wonderful opportunity to discover the depth and richness of the German poetic tradition, and learn the language at the same time.

The joy of German poetry
By Michael J. Mazza
"Introduction to German Poetry: A Dual-Language Book," edited by Gustave Mathieu and Guy Stern, is a wonderful anthology. It contains the work of thirty-four poets, mainly ranging from the 18th to 20th centuries. For the most part each poet is represented by a single short poem or excerpt, although some are represented by two or three pieces. The poems are presented in bilingual format, with the German and English versions on facing pages; this makes the book especially useful for those who are learning, or brushing up on, German. A note on the copyright page indicates that this book "is an unabridged and updated republication of the work originally published under the title _Invitation to German Poetry_" in 1959.

This is a diverse and enjoyable collection which shows how, in the hands of a skilled craftsman, the German language can be an instrument of great power and amazing beauty. The poems cover many topics and are varied in tone. Some of the poets whose work is represented include Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Friedrich Schiller, Rainer Maria Rilke, Hermann Hesse, and Bertolt Brecht. For each poet there is a picture and a short biographical note; I found this supplemental material to be very informative.

Some of my favorite pieces in this collection are as follows. Heinrich Heine's "Ich wollte, meine Lieder" ("I Wish That All My Songs"): a delightfully witty and funny variation on the love poem. Viktor von Scheffel's "Altassyrish" ("Old Assyrian"): a humorous story-poem about a drunkard in an ancient tavern; it has the delicious flavor of a drinking song. Detlev von Liliencron's "Die Musik kommt" ("The Music's Coming"): uses wonderfully rich language to evoke the sights and sounds of a military marching band. Christian Morgenstern's "Der Werwolf" ("The Werewolf"): a funny and clever satire of German grammar. Erich Kastner's "Die Entwicklung der Menschheit" ("The Development of Mankind"): a witty satire of humankind, full of funny lines and written with a remarkable, scientific-sounding vocabulary.

Also worthy of note is Franz Werfel's Whitmanesque "An den Leser" ("To the Reader"), with its sweeping embrace of humanity. But my favorite of all is Stefan George's "Du schlank und rein wie eine flamme" ("You Slim and Pure Just Like a Flame"): a passionate, exquisitely constructed, and hauntingly beautiful love poem. For the best experience of this book, I recommend reading the poems out loud, and sharing them with a friend.

Not really an "introduction"
By Matthew M. Perry
I don't know if I would call this an introduction. It's more of a introductory source anthology by which I mean a compilation of poems by major poets with very little in the way of commentary, explanation, or analysis. This book has no footnotes, a three page introduction, and- despite claims to the contrary on the back cover -no substantial critical apparatus. There is no substantial discussion of German poetic form or ways in which it differs from English poetry. Most poets get a half page biographical blurb- which I guess the editors thought was sufficient criticism -before you are thrown into their poetry. The half page blurbs aren't even dense as far as half page blurbs go: the pages are '5 x '9 with inch wide margins and the font is about 10pt font size. This review is longer than all the bios save perhaps Goethe, who gets a page and a half biography.

I'm not competent enough in German to test the "literal English translations" that oppose the German verse, but I have my doubts.

Even as a source anthology this book has faults. First and most glaringly, there are 34 poets covered in this 169 page anthology. That means, at maximum, the authors could give each poet five pages. Since each poets poems are given in both German and English that means that each poet usually gets a half page biography and one poem. Heine and Goethe get three poems a few others get two. I don't know how they expect us to understand anything about the poet based on one poem. Another problem is the failure of the authors to cite sources. I was impressed when they included a poem by Nietzsche, and I wanted to check that poem out in the context of his work, but alas Mathieu and Stern don't tell us where they pulled the work. Is it in the "Gay Science"? Maybe "Will to Power" or "Dionysius Dithyrambs"? Who knows!? The mystery is half the fun, I suppose.

Overall, this book has the feeling of an appetizer that's supposed to come before a larger and more through "introduction to German poetry": it's enough to get one interested, but you're still hungry.
