Incomplete Text

This version of The Way of a Pilgrim doesn't include And the Pilgrim Continues his Way. So you are only getting half of the book. The second part is perhaps more important than the first. I can't believe the reviewer who says all the versions are about the same didn't notice this. Paperback version shows 8o pages vs 196 pages for the version I recommend which is the Helen Bacovcin version which includes some very good quotes from the Philokalia. As a practicer of the Jesus Prayer/prayer of the heart for around 11 years I believe I have some experience in this.

Timeless, Universal, Sublime Wisdom...Let us attend!

I really did not care for this translation, but it was the cheapest for Kindle and I wanted to at least have it. This is quite possibly, the most important book one will ever read, if one is determined to chase and tackle God Himself. I would recommend a better translation but for those on a budget, this will do with the following caveats:
1. It's a prayer rope. It is NOT a rosary. There is an enormous difference - a rosary is made in a certain fashion to facilitate Roman Catholic prayers and practice. A prayer rope, a chotki, (komboskini in Greek) is different. It is designed exclusively for "the prayer of the heart" also called the Jesus Prayer. The distinction is important due to the differences in theology between Roman Catholics and the Orthodox (Russian, Greek, Serbian, etc.) In this, form MUST follow function. It is unavoidable and the person who says it does not matter, is in error, on either side.
2. In general, the average layperson should only seek unceasing prayer under the direct guidance of a confessor or spiritual father/mother. It is not something to be entered into lightly or flippantly. It is a covenant one makes with God - such covenants are holy and sacred. If you are tempted to do this make certain you are committed for the rest of your life, and that you are quite literally prepared to die for your faith. This is the kind of commitment that the Prayer of Jesus requires. "He who looks back from the plow is not worthy of Me...." Remember that.
3. This version does not include the other half of the text, and this of course makes the book incomplete. But it is a starting point to whet the appetite.
Enjoy. A timeless classic and very much appreciated the opportunity to simply have it in electronic form at an affordable price.

Timeless and Relevant

Unlike many books dealing with religion, this book is for everyone.
From an unknown author, this book describes a pilgrim, wandering through Russia in the early 19th Century. Along the way, the Pilgrim meets a spiritual father, who serves as his spiritual father, and instructs him in the way of the Jesus Prayer. From there, the pilgrim wanders through Russian, interacting with various members of society along the way.
As a result, this book is valuable for two reasons. First, it is instructive in prayer in general, and the Jesus Prayer in specific. The pilgrim takes passages from the Philokalia, and applies them to his own prayer life. He is both instructed by others he meets on his journey, and instructs some that he meets, in the art of prayer. These conversations, while important to the pilgrim, also serve to educate the reader in prayer.
Secondly, it is valuable as a resource in early 19th century Russia. Although by far, it's main purpose is to instruct in prayer, it still paints a vivid picture of society in early 19th century Russia. Even better, because it was authored during that time period, the author is not deliberately trying to paint society a certain way, but rather, just shows it as he sees it.
Basically, this book can be appreciated by almost anyone. For those wanting to educate themselves in prayer, this story is a wonderful primer. For those interested in history, this story shows a society in a specific time and place in history. For anyone interested in general human nature, the inner thoughts of the pilgrim as he wanders, and his interactions and conversations with those about him are compelling, and instructive.
