Lott's sad debut novel is a first-person chronicle of longing told by a youngish photographer named Terry about her doomed relationship with an older poet, Rudolf Rhinehart. The two had a passionate affair when Terry was a college student and Rhinehart a professor in upstate New York. They meet again 15 years later, soon after Rhinehart's obituary mistakenly runs in the New York Times. Rhinehart is unhappily married, has abandoned poetry, and is searching for his roots. Terry and Rhinehart renew their friendship before Rhinehart leaves for Ukraine to meet long-lost relatives and hopefully see letters written by his late mother. When he returns, not much more enlightened than before and having left his wife Laura, he rekindles his relationship with Terry. But while she begins shooting photos again, and with Laura's help has some success showing and selling her work, Rhinehart languishes, wallowing in despair brought on by disquieting revelations in the old country. Things only get worse, and the denouement is just short of maudlin. This is a finely wrought story, insightfully detailing the anguish of intense love and the struggles of an aspiring artist, but for some readers it may be almost too painful to enjoy. A worthwhile read

Rhinehart was Terry's big love, introducing her to womanhood, encouraging her inspiration but, ultimately, breaking her heart. When she reads his obituary, she's forced to accept that her feelings remain unresolved. But the obituary was a silly mistake and a brief meeting in a department store brings a now-married Rhinehart back into her life.
Lott demonstrates a great attention to detail and an ability to write clever, educated characters. Unfortunately, they did not sparkle for me. Terry seemed naive and almost incomplete, like she couldn't fully function without Rhinehart to consult or get approval from. Rhinehart appears smug and superior, insular and self- obsessed. And indeed, there would have been nothing wrong with this, had this been a different kind of story, or if these were supporting characters. For me, however, a story like this can only be fully appreciated if you can identify with a least one character, even if you don't happen to like them very much.
The first time Terry showed traits that made me warm to her (slightly), like independence and self- confidence, she was using these attributes to enable an irresponsible and selfish lifestyle. In the same vein, when Rhinehart initially showed vulnerability, it was so dramatic as to be almost overdone and pitiful. I just couldn't root for these characters.
The novel itself felt fragmented at times, lacking cohesion and flow as it moved from event to event. This was partly down to the change in tempo. The first half of the book progressed slowly and felt almost drawn out, whilst the second quickly gathered pace. The latter half of the novel was significantly more well-paced, compelling and engaging.
My concerns notwithstanding, Lott's writing style itself provides the real redemption. Character development aside, her writing can be clever and well-structured, lacks the saccharine sentimentality that can easily mar such a novel, and evidences a confident writing style. At times when listening, Ian McEwan came to mind. That's the real positive here. If Lott can develop the clever character development that McEwan applies, her position as a literary talent will be assured.
In short, whilst this is not without its weaknesses, it's certainly a worthwhile read. The fluffy is truly absent and if the fuzzy can be erased in future titles, Lott will be a winner.

What's the point?

The Rest of Us is an odd novel. The premise of a young woman involved with an older professor is not unique, nor is the idea that they reunite after many years apart. So one would assume that there would be something else about this book that would make this novel different. Instead, the book is a mishmash of ideas that seem thrown together for no apparent reason. The book has lots of problems. First, the romantic relationship between the two main characters is hard to swallow. There is really no explanation as to why these two people love each other. The initial affair is easy enough to understand, but the ongoing attraction is perplexing. Second, the relationship between the professor's wife and the professor's girlfriend is even harder to swallow, particularly toward the end of the novel. Third, there are a variety of situations in the book that happen and are resolved, with little impact on the plot. The extended narrative about the professor's Ukrainian heritage ends up having little bearing on the outcome of the story. The same is true of the best friend's nervous breakdown and remarkably quick recovery. And the ending - without revealing what, I guess, is a major plot point - the ending section of the book is just a cheap way of resolving the difficult situation the writer finds herself in with her two main characters. It's a cop-out, rather than an ending, and just reinforces the fact that this book has no point. If the author had something to say, it definitely got lost in this muddle of a book.

Uneven Plotting But Compelling Writing

Lott is a master of detail. While reading this novel, I looked forward to her dialog and, also, to the small bits of life that refined and made luminous most every description. She knows how to construct and present multidimensional characters excellently, too. Terry and Rhinehart are not stock May-December people in any way- even at the beginning of their relationship, and as the novel progresses, they change in ways that seem true to life but ,yet, are not predictable. Other characters are similarly well-drawn, especially Terry's best friend, Hallie. But, all of the main characters are.
The plot is uneven in parts, and sometimes I would think that twists came out of left field. But, this is a small negative because Lott's writing shines.
