From Booklist
After birthing a monster by drawing it (and then cleverly dispatching it by drawing a bus ticket) in Jeremy Draws a Monster (2009), Jeremy gets an unwelcome phone call. “I’m coming back,” says the monster, this time outfitted with a pink hat and a gray convertible. “And I’m bored!” Jeremy gathers the friends he made last time, and they each draw a new monster so that the returning beast won’t be lonely. As before, great white spaces give the affair an absurd, floating feel, especially effective when McCarty reveals the six new monsters, all of whom are ready to begin the wild rumpus. Preschool-Kindergarten. --Daniel Kraus

Review
“The pacing is superb and invites viewers to linger over each page. This is an engaging celebration of artistic imagination and friendship.” --School Library Journal "McCarty’s story is Hitchcockian in its suspense, as the monster, wearing a pink hat and carrying a brown suitcase, makes his way to Jeremy’s door. Once again, the monster proves that he knows exactly how to shift Jeremy’s quiet life into unexpected territory." --Publishers Weekly, Starred review “…satisfies in its supply of companionship all around.” --Kirkus Reviews

The two monster books go perfectly together
By Anne B. Sheffield
In response to the previous writer's disappointment, I'm puzzled. The paper airplane is a visual literacy opportunity for children to anticipate what's next -- on the title page we see it, then it flies through the window, then it continues the monster's demands. What's not to like in this 3 step process of discovery? Children love to send and receive notes. One of my students, more astute than I, pointed out that at the end of the book, even that single bird on the roof now has a flock of friends -- all children want friends, and the happy conclusion is that now the monster has a pack of friends (so he won't need to both Jeremy any more and perhaps can even learn to share and be considerate in order to maintain these new relationships), Jeremy has his real friends (further bonded by sharing a creative experience together, in addition to playing ball outside -- Jeremy now includes his friends in his private passion for art making), so book two is a culmination of book one -- all problems resolved through creativity. Now the monster is happy too! Please ask a child to explain picture books to you if there are problems with interpretation. Furthermore, each monster reflects some of the colors and patterns related to the child creating him/her which shows that whatever we make includes part of ourselves -- number 3 on J and M, brown curly hair, orange fish, green stripes -- the visual correlation is wonderful. Please examine Jan Brett's books for her margin frame pictures that tell a subplot without words so that anyone (preliterate and up) can figure out what's going on by reading the narrative sequence of illustrations. A child who couldn't yet read taught me that, as I was too busy with the words to notice what was really happening in the pictures. The best picture books express far beyond the text, and the textless books are fabulous, now moving on to graphic novels which minimize words in favor of drawing (see Hugo) which suits us a highly visual global community -- despite language differences, universal images connect us across borders and generations

Doesn't match the first book in humor
By Kari Ann Martindale
After being absolutely in LOVE with Jeremy Draws a Monster, I decided we must find out what happened when the Monster Returns. It was a little disappointing. That said, the message isn't bad and the illustrations are equally fun. I might have had expectations that were impossible to meet after reading Jeremy Draws a Monster, which I'd rate 10 stars out of 5. I think what was missing in the second book was the humor from the first book.

A Very Cute Sequel!
By Olivia H.
The Monster Returns is totally adorable and redeems the first book! I love the idea of all the children drawing their own monsters in the second book - and just like the first, the second book’s illustrations are simple, yet powerful and gorgeous (not a shock that McCarty won New York Times Best Illustrated Book of the Year).

This duo of books is a must-read from the library - but, like I said - take them out as a pair!

"House Rules" signals the official return to greatness for the series
By BookGeek
"House Rules" signals the official return to greatness for the series. While I enjoyed "Biting Cold," it was more of a transition book and due to its road trip nature I felt that things were missing. Book 7 brought us back on track. "House Rules" is a lot like the first few books in the series, but that doesn't mean it's repetitive or unvaried. Merit and Ethan have entered a whole new world. Not only in their political/vampire life, but also in their on and off romance.

Everything sort of speeds up in this book. We know where everyone stands and no stone is left unturned. That's what I enjoyed most about this book. Chloe Neill is not going to drag storylines on and on, spreading them thin until we roll our eyes from the monotony. The RG storyline plays a major role in this novel and I was glad to finally get there. From the first moment the RG was brought up, Merit has been straddling the line. She was kind of an RG member, but not. In this book it all comes to a head and it was as entertaining and stressful a situation for me, as it was for the characters.

"House Rules" is a huge success for Ms. Neill, because she will once again ensnare her readers. I promised myself that I was not reading these books because I still cared, but because I just wanted to see the ending. Wrong. I very much care about the characters in this series. I want them all to have HEA. It gets to the point where I am inwardly arguing with Merit on her choices. Whenever she does something that I feel will threaten her relationship with Ethan, I go insane. The reason? I want Merit with Ethan badly, because when Merit is with Ethan, I am with Ethan! :-)

In terms of the investigation, I am glad for any reason for Merit to interact with Jeff and Catcher, who are some of my fave characters. When the investigation started, I didn't really care. It was sad to me, but in the way that news reports are sad. By the end, the investigation evolved to the point where I was screaming for the killer's head!

Honestly, this book is not to be missed. If you gave up on the series after "Hard Bitten," it's time to come home. If you were resistant to reading this series, because of the fandom's devastation, you can now safely pick up the books. "House Rules," is filled with intrigue, action, romance and enough witty banter to fill a house. It's well written, takes you places you have been waiting a long time to go and reminds you why you fell in love with this series in the first place. A must read.

3.5 stars. Merit and Ethan together. Finally!!!
By Jennifer @ Bad Bird Reads
From Reading and Writing Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance

At A Glance
I had a love/hate relationship with House Rules. I loved the concept but I often put the book down. It took sometime for me to really get into it.

The Good
Let me start off by saying I really do love this series. I like how the vampires in this world aren't creepy or scary. They are normal like you and me, but they just have some special powers. They are relatable and in essence live normal lives except for a few vampire type problems. I can't think of any other vampire series like this one. That being said, though House Rules didn't have the pizazz as the previous books in the series, it was still very much enjoyable.

I think many fans have been dying to see what happens next after Ethan and his House of vamps decided to finally leave the horrible GP, the ruling group of vampires who make all the rules. It's an understatement to say the GP are no longer out for the good of all vampires. They are out for themselves only. As they say, absolute power, corrupts absolutely. And though I am proud of Ethan for finally removing his House from under their thumb, it was hard to see the lengths the GP would go to bring down these innocent vampires. If it wasn't obvious in the past couple books, the GP have no limits, no reservations in their cruelty. And to add more crap to an already ceiling high crap pile, some psycho is going around killing vampires. And of course it falls to Merit to find the killer before his list of victims grows any bigger.

Merit had so many obstacles in this book it's hard to keep count. I truly don't know how she can stay sane dealing with everything she has on her plate. I think she did a pretty good job of keeping it together. I love how Merit always takes the initiative. She makes the hard decisions when no one else can. She is the kind of person that would do anything, even take a stake to the heart, to save a friend. And with her and Ethan finally starting to build a life together, I can see Merit opening up, becoming whole. Not that she needed Ethan to make herself whole, she just needed someone to finally love her for her, not her connections. When the inevitable fight came, I was so worried that we would see the same Merit and Ethan as before. They still frustrated me in many ways, with Merit's insecurities and Ethan's pig-headedness, but I also saw a change in them. They didn't break-up right away, they let each other have space while they figured out what was the right thing for them as a couple.

I do love where the series as a whole is going. Now, with Cadogan House free from the GP, I hope their relationship with the Rogue vampires becomes even stronger because they need allies. I am still pissed off at the other Houses for using Cadogan's House as their personal helpers but never returning the favor in fear of GP's reprisal. But I see a change coming, and I can only hope things get better from here.

The writing was well done and the side characters were, as always, entertaining in their own ways. It's nice to see Mallory doing better as well. Though I feel like Merit in that it's hard to forgive what Mallory did, I am finding myself warming to her more and more. Mallory use to be one of my favorite secondary characters ever. I hope I feel that about her again sometime soon.

The Bad
No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't get into this book for the longest time. It was too slow and the whole Merit being a detective thing just wasn't working for me. I know she is often investigating crimes in each book, but this time around I didn't find it engaging.

Ethan annoyed the crap out of me in House Rules. His attitude in past books has bothered me before so I wasn't really surprised when it happened this time, too. He really knows how to act like a baby when he doesn't get his way. It's so weird how he can come across so pompous and "mature" as the Master of the House, then act like a child when Merit doesn't follow his every command or reveal every single aspect of her life.

The Snuggly
It's nice to see Ethan and Merit finally together. They don't have much time together because of all the chaos, but the few stolen moments they get are both sweet and sexy. And we actually get a semi-sex scene that I just loved. Ethan can be so naughty and flirty. I love that side of him.

Final Thoughts
House Rules is not the best book in the series, but for fans, it is a must read. The Cadogan vampires are making huge progress in their bid for freedom. I am dying to see what is going to happen next. Recommended for fans of the series.

Quotes
Ethan grinned and crooked a finger at me.

"I don't perform on command," I reminded him.

He unsnapped the top button on his jeans.

My eyes widened. "Sneaky Bastard."

*****

"Yo," Jeff answered, his voice ringing through the Bentley's impeccable stereo system.

"Hey, it's Merit."

"Merit. Have you finally decided to ditch the zero and get with the hero?"

Ethan cleared his throat--loudly--while I bit back a smile. I didn't see anything wrong with reminding Ethan that I had other options, even if they were slightly goofy options I'd never actually take advantage of.

"Jeff, you're on speakerphone in Ethan's car. He's driving."

There was an awkward pause.

"And by 'zero,'" Jeff quickly corrected, "I meant, you know, you should...um...start liking the White Sox. Go, Sox," he weakly added.

Borrow this from the library---your money is too valuable to waste
By Kathy Davie
Seventh in the Chicagoland Vampires urban fantasy series. In my opinion, this is written to an early teen audience.

My Take
This series started out so well. And book by book, it's falling into an abyss---no disrespect intended to teens. My first inclination was to agree with earlier reviewers that Neill is allowing her most vocal audience to dictate the writing. My next thought was to not allow others to dictate what I was thinking. I struggled. Neill simply kept providing the ammunition that made me want to put this into a Young Adult category. That isn't fair to young adults because they're so much more intelligent than this.

Neill is riding the positive waves of the much earlier stories in this series, and her readers are purchasing her books because of that earlier promise. I can understand wanting to know what happens with the GP. How Cadogan House survives. Or not. But don't bother buying this installment to find out. Get on a waiting list at the library. Your money is more valuable than wasting it on this.

The negatives? Oh, let me count the ways. Merit and Ethan's interactions before and after the betrayal, the way in which they act apart are at a maturity level somewhere between middle school and high school. Puh-lease, Ethan's reaction when he learns Merit's deep dark secret is so lame. He's so supposed to be so white-hot as a strategist, and he can't grasp the usefulness of what Merit chose? Neill has portrayed him---in the past---as more intelligent than this. Merit is terrified that Lacey is gonna spill the beans. What beans?? Hullo, she's investigating a murder and Jonah is a source. Spin it, ya idjit. What? Neill couldn't be bothered to work at this?? All her teeny-bopper advisers couldn't see past their middle school angst?

Oh, please, what is the big deal about a dance in front of Cadogan House vamps and Rogues? Merit's impatience with the doorman. I understand her frustration, but her approach is awkward and heavy-handed.

Oh, no!! I just realized what Neill forgot!! Oh, tragedy...gag...she missed out on putting in a hair-pulling scene between Lacey and Merit. I mean, that is the level to which Neill has sunk. I don't understand why Merit falls for Lacey's words. How old is Merit again? Fifteen? Oh, wait, she's in her late twenties. I just keep forgetting...

People are murdered, an item of value is stolen and what's their reaction? They mope. Not until the last minute does anyone think hmmm, maybe we should check the video surveillance. Navarre House uses biometrics. Does anyone think to check the House database to see who is registered? Or how the biometrics register? No. They mope. Until the last minute. God knows ya gotta dredge up the drama from somewhere. I have to admit, I skimmed chunks of the text as I was too nauseated and in too much of a hurry to get it over with. Thank you god that I borrowed this claptrap from the library.

When investigating the first pair of murders and Merit finds the evidence that could point to McKetrick, whatcha gonna do? Yup, dive right into assuming it must be McKetrick and then beard the idiot in his den. What purpose does that serve? It was a lame, immature move. On the other hand, I gotta hand it to Neill for consistency.

Part of my irritation is the lack of action. All these events are happening and mostly everyone sits around moping and whining. Neill spends more time on silly nicknames and whiny arguments than actual detecting.

There is a nice bit of backstory about Peter Cadogan and the fairy princess he fell in love with. It explains the value of the egg.

What was with the scene at Navarre House when Ethan throws down the owe-me card? I keep reading that one over and over, and without going back and re-reading the previous six books, I'm clueless. I can see Ethan's point in the now, when the other two Houses aren't stepping up to help, but the reference to the past is beyond me.

Someone explain to me why one would send one's butler a birthday card? Merit's father is a major jerk. Ethan refused, so he paid Celina to turn his own daughter into a vampire. Because the first daughter named Caroline Evelyn Merit died. This Merit is the replacement and he didn't want her to die. Oh, yeah, that's what I'd do... Who is this guy? Does his wife, Merit's mother, have any idea what he did? And he has the nerve to tell Merit that she's selfish for having wanted to have a say in her new life??

Well that meeting with the GP mole went well. All that set-up to hear the same thing Merit's already heard.

The Story
This is it. The end. Unless Cadogan House buckles under to the Greenwich Presidium's authority. The GP is an underhanded bunch, supreme in their belief that they are in the right. But then the Cadogan vampires can, eventually, outthink those who are caught up in the old way of thinking.

The Characters
Merit is Sentinel for Cadogan House. She holds a master's degree and was going for her doctorate when she was forcibly turned into a vampire. So, she's obviously at least book smart, if nothing else. Since Ethan Sullivan came back from the dead, he is operating as a co-Master of the House until they do a formal handover.

Malik is the current Master and can't wait to hand it back to Ethan; Aaliyah is his wife. Delia is a doctor friend of Aaliyah's. Luc is the former captain of Cadogan's guards, the current Second, and Lindsey's lover. Kelley is filling in as captain while Luc is playing Second. Margot is still the House cook. Paige Martin is a sorceress Merit and Ethan met in Biting Cold who adores a good library...and it seems the Cadogan librarian. Michael Donovan is a vampire security analyst hired to vamp up the House's security. Helen is still the concierge for the House.

Lacey Sheridan was sired by Ethan and is still in love with him. She's coming to Chicago to suck up to Darius, hopefully, to deter him from being too nasty to the Cadogans. She is master of Sheridan House in San Diego.

Noah Beck, sort of, leads the Rogues in Chicago; he's also part of the Red Guard (RG). Rose is both Eve's and Noah's Rogue friend. Alan and Beth and Eve and Oliver are Rogue couples. Morgan Greer is the current Master of Navarre and Nadia is his Second; Scott Grey leads Grey House. Jonah is captain of the Grey House guards and is secretly Merit's partner in the RG. Horace is another member, a Civil War veteran who still dresses in the era in which he began.

Merit's grandfather, Chuck Merit, may be fired officially as the Ombudsman, but he's set up an unofficial office in his home. His staff simply followed him there: Jeff Christopher is a tiger shifter and does the computer magic. Catcher Bell is a disavowed sorcerer and Mallory's maybe boyfriend. Mallory has a lot of kissing up to do. Marjorie is his admin. Detective Jacobs is a friend of Chuck's.

Mallory Carmichael is a sorceress who went bad; she was Merit's best friend until she betrayed her and all of Chicago. She's currently under a sort of house arrest working for the Chicago shifters at Berna's bar, Little Red. Gabriel Keene is "the head of the Apex of the North American Central Pack of shifters" and only willing to go so far in backing up Ethan. Fallon is Gabriel's sister, and she's in a relationship, sometimes, with Jeff. Other siblings include Ben, Christopher, and Derek---Adam was ousted for his efforts.

Diane Kowalcyzk is Chicago's new clueless mayor, who hates vampires. Enough to appoint the murderous McKetrick to an official post as head liaison in the Office of Human Liaisons---to protect humans hurt by supernaturals. Because obviously, all supernaturals are evil. Joshua is Merit's father---we'll assume Merit's mom has a name, she just doesn't seem to merit being mentioned by it; Robert and Charlotte are her siblings. Carlos Anthony Martinez was a naughty vampire who stepped outside his bounds; one whom Celine, the bad Master of Navarre, sired. Stephen Caniglia is one of the vampires Carlos sired.

Darius West leads the Greenwich Presidium (GP), which is the central authority for all vampire Houses. GP members who arrive in Chicago with him include Harold Monmouth, Danica, Diego Castillo (represents Mexico), and Lakshmi Rao. Rogue vampires are those not affiliated with a House. The Red Guard is a secret organization of vampires who vow to protect against the GP and bad Masters. There are twelve Houses: Navarre*, McDonald, Cabot, Cadogan*, Taylor, Lincoln, Washington, Heart, Lassiter, Grey*, Murphy, and Sheridan.

* Houses located in Chicago.

The Cover
The cover is dark in shades of black and gray with Merit clad in black leather pants and a red tank top, standing with her back to us as she holds open the door to Cadogan House, glancing back over her shoulder in question, her katana held down by her side.

The title can be interpreted in several ways, and my first impression when I heard it was of the rules by which the GP and Cadogan House abided. After reading it, I'd say that it's a triumph and, dude! Cadogan House RULES.

My Favorite Fairy Tales
By A Customer
To start off, let me first say that in general, I like the whole series of Dover Children's Thrift Classics Fairy Tales. Filled with murder and betrayal, this book is questionably appropriate for young children, though it does leave behind some important morals.

We borrowed this book from the local library and fell in love with it. So happy to have found this for my husband for Christmas. He's been reading the stories nightly to our son who seems to enjoyed the lyrical rhythms of the stories. Great alternative to the usual bedtime stories.

¿qué he dicho en realidad?

The Age of Ice: A Novel, by J. M. Sidorova

An epic debut novel about a lovelorn eighteenth-century Russian noble, cursed with longevity and an immunity to cold, whose quest for the truth behind his condition spans two thrilling centuries and a stunning array of historical events.

The Empress Anna Ioannovna has issued her latest eccentric order: construct a palace out of ice blocks. Inside its walls her slaves build a wedding chamber, a canopy bed on a dais, heavy drapes cascading to the floor—all made of ice. Sealed inside are a disgraced nobleman and a deformed female jester. On the empress’s command—for her entertainment—these two are to be married, the relationship consummated inside this frozen prison. In the morning, guards enter to find them half-dead. Nine months later, two boys are born.

Surrounded by servants and animals, Prince Alexander Velitzyn and his twin brother, Andrei, have an idyllic childhood on the family’s large country estate. But as they approach manhood, stark differences coalesce. Andrei is daring and ambitious; Alexander is tentative and adrift. One frigid winter night on the road between St. Petersburg and Moscow, as he flees his army post, Alexander comes to a horrifying revelation: his body is immune to cold.

J. M. Sidorova’s boldly original and genrebending novel takes readers from the grisly fields of the Napoleonic Wars to the blazing heat of Afghanistan, from the outer reaches of Siberia to the cacophonous streets of nineteenth-century Paris. The adventures of its protagonist, Prince Alexander Velitzyn—on a lifelong quest for the truth behind his strange physiology—will span three continents and two centuries and bring him into contact with an incredible range of real historical figures, from Mary Shelley, the author of Frankenstein, to the licentious Russian empress Elizaveta and Arctic explorer Joseph Billings.

The Age of Ice is one of the most enchanting and inventive debut novels of the year.

From Booklist
Sidorova’s imaginative and densely detailed first novel mingles historical and speculative fiction. Prince Alexander Velitsyn was conceived in ice: he and his twin brother were born of two jesters forced to wed and remain overnight in Empress Anna Ioanovna’s ice palace in January 1740. As a young soldier, Alexander is startled to discover he’s unaffected by cold and that heightened emotions turn his body literally frigid. Thus begins his quest for a scientific explanation and fellow sufferers, if they exist. Since his condition makes it challenging to get close to women, he turns to a life of adventure and exploration. His jaunts propel readers on an informative journey over 250 years of Russian history and ventures abroad, from an Arctic expedition to the Napoleonic Wars and the Great Game in central Asia. (He also becomes immortal at one point.) Alexander’s detached narration—which suits his situation—keeps readers at a distance, but his interactions with other characters, real and fictional, and his continual yearning for connections enrich the tale with depth and meaning. --Sarah Johnson

Review
"Jeweled with the kind of narrative intricacies and heights of fancy that transform a good story into a sensory glut, in this mesmerizing debut, Sidorova reduces you to a primal state of readership, casting you into darkness so vast that you have no choice but to press on and discover what about it feels so familiar. The Age of Ice rekindles every far-flung childhood memory you have of what it means to experience a great book." (Téa Obreht, New York Times-bestselling author of The Tiger's Wife )

"The age of delicate senses had not yet dawned, nerves had not been discovered."
By Amelia Gremelspacher
Alexander was conceived to parents sealed in an ice place by decree of Empress Anna Ionnovna, ruler of Russia. His father, a prince, had been disgraced by being designated a court jester. His mother, a humpback was a jester by birthright and died giving birth to Alexander and Andrei, his twin. Remarkably, this setting for our journey in magical realism was entirely possible in the marginally civilized world of Russia in 1740. Indeed, this novel, spanning decades, is embedded in the miraculous but true progression and regression of Russia. The ornate writing itself bears the mark of an intellect searching for meaning and knowledge in this huge country of extremes. As quoted in my title, introspection was not highly regarded and only men entering and completing 25 years of military duty were deemed to have grown ou of the official title of juvenile.

Alexander had been into privilege and ease as a prince of the realm. His natural ease and physical beauty had earned him a place in the guard of the Empress herself. Indeed he was in that group who overthrew the czar to put Catherine the Great on the throne in their regard for an Empress ruling the country. He gradually learns that shades of passion come to render him freezing to the point he will eventually kill anyone in his embrace, while he feels no change of temperature.

In a world of extreme emotions, he must shield himself from lust, rage, and grief. There is no one to guide him and no one to understand. He cannot even trust another person with his secret. His only eternally constant companion is the ecstasy of ice, the transformation of all life other than his to to a crystalline death. The prose can become exhausting at some points, but the author always rescues the reader from the brink metaphysical burn out into the hands of a compelling story. These decades of Russian history are consumed with extremes heroism to depths of ignominy. He participates in the heartless splendor of Catherine the Great, the search through Siberia for the Northeast passage, and the Napoleonic Wars. Seemingly immortal, his story stretches through every extreme.

In his encounters with ice, an allegory on the transformation of the world emerges. As water is the base of life, is ice a part of every cycle? "A story is a form of death or a form of immortality of life, very much like life itself." Here is a story to bring one kind of order to a boiling world. I urge you to take this trip to Ice.

He is Ice.
By Greg Polansky
This is a book that, if you choose, will reward you on multiple levels.

If you want a good story, set in an exotic local as many fantasies written in the twenty-first century seem wont to do to now to differentiate themselves from the typical Tolkienesque medieval world, then you will enjoy the alien world written about here.

If you are Russian, Russophone or have a background where you learned the tales of the bogatyrs, about the succession of Russian czars and czarinas of the 18th century, and about Russian culture then you will smile at the casual references to things you know and grew up with. And maybe you still recall watching the most awesome Soviet cartoon, The Snow Queen (1957), and so something about the title of the book and the cover art will have sparked your imagination and cause you to order this on the day it came out.

Either way, or perhaps because of both ways, you will indeed enjoy this fantasy. Set against the backdrop of long centuries and across the span of the Russian Empire and beyond to the Middle East of the 19th century and Europe of the 20th century, the story begins with the copulation of the protagonist's (Alexander) father with a dwarf. In an ice palace of all places. Why there and why the deed? Because the author's father offended the Empress Anna with a dalliance with an Italian Catholic. Ah the whims of royalty when you're the not the ruler but living in an autocratic system. Fun times.

The writing itself can sometimes feel/be considered overwrought. But only to the eyes of someone used to twenty-first century simplicity. No one seriously calls Jane Austen verbose or full of love for her own self because of how she wrote. And I did get a slight Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell vibe from the writing of this book, another book written now but as it were originally written in another century. It's not too easy to capture the writing style of a bygone era. The book sometimes feels as if it is being written in the 18th century but with modern just slightly too self indulgent and self aware tendencies. Considering that the protagonist is thinking about his own history, then perhaps this mismatch between 18th century and 21st century will resolve itself.

But where is the fantasy you're asking yourself. Early on in our riveting tale, Alexander slowly begins to realize that he cannot feel cold. And what this means for him is what drives his story. Because Alexander is different than everyone else and his search for the reason why he is different is the heart of the book. It will lead him across the Russian Empire. And beyond. Lots of great descriptions. Lots of good story telling.

Fantasy can be many things these days. While I am happy reading Tolkien or Lewis, I'm also happy reading this kind of book that sets the story in a world many of us are just as unfamiliar with, but that still seeks to tell a good story and allow us an escape from the "real" world into the fantastical world. This time to that of a Russia that was.

An amazing writer
By Ionia Froment
Assessing this book for review is somewhat like trying to tell the entire world history is less than 300 words. It isn't possible. Reading this novel is a journey through a world of history and amazing wonders and is a truly beautiful read. If you are into books that slowly and carefully unfold with excellent character development, "the Age of Ice" has you covered.

This is not an action filled book where things happen a mile a minute. The writing seems somewhat reserved and you never feel particularly close to the main character, but you never really have the desire to give up on him either. There is always a shield up between him and the reader, although I can't help, based on the story, but feel that this was intentional.

The main character suffers from a "cold" condition, where any time he is riled up, either positively or negatively, he experiences a full body cold that allows him to hold snow without it melting and makes his desire for a normal relationship more than impossible. The idea that the author wrote his character somewhat impersonally matches that theme perfectly. I found that I, as the reader, spent my time trying to get inside his head and feel closer to him but continually came up short, which made me feel frustrated, just as the character did as he searched for someone to be close to. Well played, J.M. Sidorova.

This book spans a long period of time, and while I found the complicated tale interesting and well written, there were times when I felt my mind wander a bit while reading. The writing itself is solid. The author has an amazing grasp on how to use the proper language to evoke emotion, and the dialogue is excellent, although written in the same second hand delivery that makes it feel much less personal.

While I did have moments of wandering mind, there were many sections of this novel where I completely forgot myself and became so bound in the story that I could do nothing else but read, hoping the eventual result would be a happy one for the character that I had been with for the duration.

The ending of the book was a bit odd for me, and the reason why I have decided to go with four stars rather than five. I don't want to include a spoiler, so I will proceed cautiously. This book, as I mentioned above, spans a longer time period than most. When it catches up to the more recent history of the world, the character makes a decision about how he will carry on, and I just didn't feel that it quite worked with the rest of the book. It may have just been a personal expectation, but I felt the end struggled a bit to match the previous parts of this incredible Russian literature. I do give the author a lot of credit for dealing with important issues of environmental impact.

If you are going to read this book (and I recommend that you do) take some time away from life. Find a quiet place, and devote your mind to the story. It will consume you, amaze you and remind you that there are authors out there who use common words to create uncommon magic.

A choice to forgive
By Lynda Figueiredo
It is how Christmas should be. People coming together to celebrate the birth of Christ, not worried about how many or how expensive the gifts they recieve and give cost, just being kind to one another.
But most of alllearning to forgive another for past hurts

great book
By BRENDA
I have read most of the Amish books written by Beth Wiseman. Absolutely love them all. Just try to make sure you get them in order as many of them are in a series. Easier to understand and appreciate the characters that come alive in the stories. This is a book I would recommend to anyone wanting good clean reading. I have read many reviews when I am looking for books. The reason I do not tell anything about the books characters is because it is already in the details....I want to know if a person enjoyed the book or not, which is what I want to give to others....

WHAT IS YOUR CHOICE?
By Judith A. Fritz
I gave this book a 5 star rating because I couldn't put it down!! Would have been a 10 but we aren't allowed that many. From young love to heroism to forgiveness is the theme of this lovely book. The mystery in between is what keeps you going. I would like to see more to this.

At Christmastime in Boston, a thief targets the local scrooge
The angry old men of the Comrades of the Convivial Codfish club celebrate yuletide doing what they do best: eating, drinking, and greeting the season of giving with a spirited “bah, humbug!” Though well past sixty, Jem Kelling is a relative infant compared to some of the club’s elder statesmen, and he has waited decades to host their annual Christmas scowl. And during his first evening as Exalted Chowderhead, he is thrilled to find the wine abundant, the chowder superb, and the humbugs as lusty as ever. But as the night winds down, Jem is horrified to find that the ceremonial Codfish necklace has vanished—right off of his neck! His nephew-in-law, art investigator Max Bittersohn, is convinced his new uncle was the victim of a practical joke. But when the old man takes a hip-snapping tumble, Max is forced to conclude that one of the scrooges is trying to perpetrate a deadly Christmas jeer.

About the Author
Charlotte MacLeod (1922–2005) was an internationally bestselling author of cozy mysteries. Born in Canada, she moved to Boston as a child, and lived in New England most of her life. After graduating from college, she made a career in advertising, writing copy for the Stop & Shop Supermarket Company before moving on to Boston firm N. H. Miller & Co., where she rose to the rank of vice president. In her spare time, MacLeod wrote short stories, and in 1964 published her first novel, a children’s book called Mystery of the White Knight.  In Rest You Merry (1978), MacLeod introduced Professor Peter Shandy, a horticulturist and amateur sleuth whose adventures she would chronicle for two decades. The Family Vault (1979) marked the first appearance of her other best-known characters: the husband and wife sleuthing team Sarah Kelling and Max Bittersohn, whom she followed until her last novel, The Balloon Man, in 1998.

Another Great Book From Charlotte MacLeod
By Patricia
I first read MacLeod because her book was featured on my Kindle Fire. I love to read good mysteries that keep me guessing until the end. MacLeod did not disappoint. I have read her books in order so this was the fourth or fifth of the Sarah Kelling, & Max Bittersohn mysteries. They have all been delightful & I would recommend reading them in order, although they do stand on their own quite well, too. The books are set in Boston but as MacLeod's background is Canadian/English, you get the flavor of a good English mystery. Sarah Kelling is a wonderful protagonist: smart, witty, industrious, and sympathetic. These books are good for people who dislike profanity and explicit sex scenes. They engage one's mind and one's heart. I will definitely read the rest of MacLeod's books.

Great fun for the holidays
By B. B CLEMMER
I just finished my annual reading of this entry in MacLeod's Kelling series and greatly enjoyed it again. This is not a dark or intricately structured puzzle mystery, but a light, comfortable romp with some very engaging characters. Uncle Jem has always been one of my favorites. The book is focused much more on the activities and investigation of Max, who has married into the Kelling clan. (Sarah's activities during this time are covered in a short story by MacLeod covering her separate case. ) The story takes place over the Christmas holiday season, and involve Uncle Jem's cronies, most of whom are quite eccentric characters. Other reviews give more, plot details, but I wanted to add my recommendation. This series is very endearing to me - some entries are a bit more somber, but most are very light. Each entry stands alone, but reading them in order is quite beneficial with the progression of the recurring characters' lives and relationships. (MacLeod bookended the series nicely with the last book reflecting back to the first.) Some might find some of the characters a bit too arch and convenient, but it is not meant to be believable, just fun...well-written fun.

From Booklist
Studying a spider at close range during a walk in the woods. Picking up trash in an inner-city neighborhood. Allowing troubled youth to assist in a search for lost keys. Grieco’s updated version of The Kitchen Mystic, first published in 1992, captures many splendid moments within ordinary circumstances. A teacher of forgiveness training from Minneapolis, the author somehow manages to explore twenty-first-century existence while acknowledging the negative forces that blind and bombard us. Her delightfully readable chapters explore universal concepts of forgiveness, acceptance, giving and receiving love, and the need for self-discipline. Offering personal stories and unpretentious assurances for “spiritual explorers,” this also provides several recipes for contentment and spiritual growth, much on the order of a cherished cookbook that enriches our quality of existence by explaining basic cooking concepts. A special book that deserves a place on library shelves. --Susan DeGrane
