The Microscope and How to Use It, by Dr. Georg Stehli

A world of pleasure, excitement and new knowledge awaits one who learns to use the microscope — a world in which table salt crystals appear as jewels, a drop of water swarms with life, a butterfly's wings reveal a cascade of multicolored particles. This book is for anyone who would like to enter that world, whether or not he has ever used a microscope before. No special knowledge is required. In non-technical language and with generous use of illustration, the author explains how a microscope works and what kind to use; how to adjust the instrument and position the specimens to be viewed; examination of simple objects: a human hair, feathers, milk. At the same time, he shows how to prepare the objects, what to purchase for the purpose, how to care for it; one's every question is anticipated and clearly answered. The fundamentals understood, the reader is taken into further exploration viewing insect parts, diatoms, plankton, molds, leaves, ferns, fruit rinds, fish scales, animal parts. As we proceed, we learn step by step the techniques involved: use of chloroform, preparation of permanent slides, mounting in glycerine, preparing dye solutions, dissection, and blood smearing. We learn how to detect fat, find Vitamin C in food substances, prepare a frog for examination, view and distinguish bacteria, use the oil-immersion objective, dye bacilli spores, do microphotography, cut sections with the microtome.
Following Dr. Stehli's careful instructions, we have entered and gone well into the fascinating world of microscopy. The invention of the microscope itself started science on new courses, entire fields of new knowledge. The use of a comparatively simple microscope today can start one on a lifetime interest, an absorbing hobby, a career in science, or a permanent addition to one's cultural background. This book provides all the help needed, whether one is adult or student, hobbyist or scientifically serious, seeking education or merely curious about the minute world that exists all about us. 119 photographs and drawings.

Detailed source of microscope technique
By A Customer
[Note that this is a review of the hardcover, seventh printing in 1969 distributed by Sterling Pub. Co., not the Dover edition that Amazon is selling -- to me! Rated at 8 only because I don't know whether more current information is available. Otherwise, call it a 10.]
This is the only serious book on microscope technique that I could find in the Fairfax County VA public library system which is probably one of the best in the country. All the other books are superficial and aimed at kids.
This one covers apparatus care and use, simple (temporary) preparations of various kinds of specimens, microphotography (though superficially), but the best part is the appendix on microtome technique which presents a full procedure for fixing, dehydration, and paraffin infiltration.
Here are the chapter titles:
1. The Microscope and Essential Tools
2. How to Use the Microscope
3. Examining Simple Preparations
4. Insect Preparations
5. Exploring a Drop of Water
6. The Structure of Plants
7. The Structure of Animals
8. Bacteria
9. Microphotography
Appendix. Microtome Technique
with Index.
Thank God for Dover Press and their willingness to keep these oldies but goodies available. With libraries catering to the bestseller crowd, our technical know-how would otherwise perish.

Good introduction to microscopy but chemicals are a problem.
By A Customer
In its English translation, this book is a good introduction to microscopy and microtechnique but suffers from two problems:
1. The translation from the German is sometimes awkward and not always clear as to meaning (I have read the book in German as well);
2. The book makes reference to chemicals which cannot be obtained by private individuals in the US. Some chemical references are also no longer available: "wood vinegar", given by Dr. Stehli as a constituent of Pfeiffer's Fixative for algae, does not exist anywhere on this side of the Atlantic. Wood vinegar is actually a literal translation of the German "Holzessig" and is apparently an impure form of glatial acetic acid (which is available, but again not to individuals).
Students who have access to a college laboratory or who can order chemicals through a third party will be very happy with this book. The information on basic setup of a microscope, hand-cutting sections and preparation of fresh (as opposed to fixed) specimens is excellent.

Heroic couplet-form dialogue brings an epic feel to this survey of war and human nature’s destiny.

No one is more aware of the paradoxes inherent in war than its principals. In this epic survey, Richard Lyons takes to battlefields and staging areas to dramatize the tragic ironies and conflicting truths in human warfare.

But by the Chance of War is a stirring tetralogy of separate but thematically linked parts. The first three of these works are based on pivotal historical events: the invasion of the Gupta (India) Empire by the Huns (515 CE), the French and Indian surrender of Fort Niagara to the British (1759), and a German advance on British troops near the city of Amiens, France (1918). Part four is purely fictional, taking place in Jerusalem at a time very much like the present.

The dialogue is in heroic couplet, a format that, Lyons explains in his foreword, attempts “the reconciliation of two physically opposed lines.” Though the poetry may seem daunting to some readers, it lends gravitas to the dialogue and smacks of classic epic works.

Each part, a play in itself, features some new advance in the technology of war, but the human element is oddly consistent. Near the end of the final cataclysmic scene in part four, nuclear warfare having decimated half the planet, a Franciscan Brother cries, “Twas for us the beast in Nature to subdue, / But it’s the beast in us that subdues the world!” The lament is nearly an echo of the observation made by a Hindu priest to his Hun captors in part one: “Who would conquer all things must conquer one thing / Those desires of his soul which are limiting!”

Lyons also looks at the circumstances of war—that which is fought for and that which is defended. The Huns are “wonders of an hour” who are disrupting centuries of peace to invade the Gupta Empire. They fling “spears and stones, fire and arrows” to destroy a diverse, sophisticated culture. In Europe many centuries later, an assassination has set ten million men, most of them bound by alliances designed to keep the peace, to the trenches of World War I. The heroic sacrifice of life and limb is contrasted to betrayals of trust by nations as well as individuals. And the rage to avenge a wrong often results in the occurrence of more wrongs.

At times, Lyons’s warriors argue the folly of ignoring the “gathering evil” that is the enemy. At other times, characters see that “we are all prisoners here, of our ill ambition!” His men are honorable and principled as often as they reek of excessive desire and pride. During the French and Indian Wars, the British bought newly invented howitzers from a Frenchman. Many British officers deplore the moral lapse of the traitor even though they will benefit from it; one general considers not using a cannon bought from the enemy. His argument: “This victory ought not to be merely over foes / But a victory over our lesser selves.”

Richard Lyons’s work is a profound examination of the phenomenon of war. It is also a proposal that men should not despair in the struggle over their “lesser selves.”

A chronicle of mankind’s destructive urges through the ages, rendered in four epic poems spanning four wars and 1,500 years.

In his debut, Lyons offers a tetralogy—a group of four related plays written as epic poems in rhyming couplets, based on a style used in classical Athens, Greece, but unique for our age. He starts with an Indian conflict between the Gupta Empire and the invading Ephthalite Huns in the year 515, then moves on to the 1759 French and Indian War. He then depicts a World War I battle at Amiens in 1918, followed by an undated global nuclear Armageddon, as viewed on computer screens in a Jerusalem bunker. Although widely disparate in time and place, some narratives share important threads: Brothers fight one another, or participants see power, ambition and greed as the causes of conflict but stand by as the blood flows. Change is the only constant as empires rise and fall and one disaster foreshadows the next; for example, in the third play, a priest blesses the body parts of British soldiers “blasted to atoms,” a prelude to the splitting of atoms in the fourth and final play. In that nuclear disaster, a fictional U.S. secretary of state and his family fly into Israel to try to defuse the threats of a Middle Eastern leader, but even the leader’s brother can’t talk him out of starting a war. Lyons walks a high wire with this ambitious, difficult project—particularly with the rhyming couplets, which don’t always sing—but he successfully conveys a tragic picture of human depravity and ultimate self-destruction. Overall, it’s a work of great scholarship; not an easy read, but not overly difficult, either, as ample footnotes and maps explain historical context when necessary.

A sometimes brilliant and often moving poetic exploration of humanity’s warlike ways.

An impressive work
By Phil Allen
As I read the four related plays in "But By the Chance War", I was impressed with the amount of effort it must have taken to research, structure and then put these works into epic poem format. I have read in some reviews that the reading can be slow, which is to be expected in a world where our literature is often boiled down into pulp stories and tweets. As I became accustomed to the rhyming couplets, the work took on a life of it's own and the format added to the enjoyment of the stories.

I hope that someone ventures to bring these plays to the stage. As I read the battel of Amiens in particular, I couldn't help imagining the terrifying scenes of WWI trench warfare unfolding on a live set.

By Amy Edelman
BUT BY THE CHANCE OF WAR is an ambitious project indeed- a play in four parts, written in heroic couplets, covering the fall of the Gupta Empire to the invading Huns, the defeat of the Iroquois at the hands of the British, the Battle of Amiens in WWI, and a projected future nuclear apocalypse. The plays each address, in parallel, betrayal, concepts of justice, tradition, the cruelties of war, the need for self-conquest and growth through struggle against adverse challenges, and the dangers inherent in human ambition and desire for empire. Each section involves the betrayal of a brother by another, a son at risk, and the destruction or potential destruction of a great empire.

The play is certainly ambitious, and addresses in grandly passionate speeches many vital issues surrounding humanity, empire, warfare, and religion. The characters' emotions are profound, and resonate in parallel throughout the play, as one father's grief for his son becomes another's, as one brother argues with another over the respective roles of justice, compassion, tradition, adversity and beliefs, as mothers and wives weep for their loved ones on the sidelines, and as religious leaders plead for the values of their faiths. The ending in each case is tragic, as humanity's failure to learn self-mastery again and again results in destruction and death. Religious symbolism resounds through the work, bringing a deeper sense of meaning to each historical event.

There are times, however, when the work feels over-ambitious, as if the author did not quite manage to live up to his striving. Trying to put a whole work like this into heroic couplets is exhausting, and it is no wonder that frequently the rhymes are noticeably clumsy or outright forgotten. The melodramatic epic style leads to characters that frequently seem to be haranguing or preaching to the reader rather than speaking to each other. The author's efforts to find commonality among peoples leads to some distortion of non-Christian faiths and cultures, particularly with respect to Iroquois beliefs and family structure, which ignores the Ataensic's twin sons, who are central to Iroquois creation stories. The editing can be clumsy in places - at least in the electronic edition, half-words are often left hanging at the end of lines, not completed in the next line.

BUT BY THE CHANCE OF WAR is a thought-provoking and ambitious work, an epic look at human greed, ambition and cruelty across times and cultures.

Hyena (Animal), by Mikita Brottman

Hyenas are almost universally regarded as vile, scheming creatures, skulking in the alleyways of the animal kingdom. Scorned as little more than scavenging carrion-eaters, vandals and thieves, they have long been associated with the malevolent and macabre. This book offers an alternative view of these mistreated and misunderstood animals and proves that the hyena is in fact complex, intelligent and highly sociable.
Hyena takes us on a tour of the hyena throughout history, detailing the magic, myth and ritual associated with this remarkable animal. Although shrouded in taboo, the hyena has been the source of and inspiration for talismanic objects since the ancient Greek and Roman civilizations. Many cultures use parts of the hyena – from its excrement and blood to its genitalia and hair – to make charms and totems that variously avert evil, promise virility and promote fertility. This book also considers portrayals of hyenas in modern popular culture, including The Lion King and The Life of Pi, in which they are often stereotyped as villains, cowardly henchmen or clowns, and their more impressive qualities ignored.
Rightly returning hyenas to their proper place in the animal pantheon, this richly illustrated book will be enjoyed by any animal lover with an interest in the unusual and offbeat.

Very informative!
By Hyena Fanatic
I've been waiting forever for a book that's this informative on hyenas! From the 4 different species to their bad reputation to their appearances in movies and the like, this book covers a good range on hyenas. Some areas, such as "Hyena Magic" and Wargs and Scrunts", I'd never even heard of such things mentioned in the chapters. This book is very detailed, complete with a wonderful variety of photos. I encourage anyone who loves hyenas to pick up this book, it's a terrific read!

Excellent book

Hyena is an excellent book that covers most of the fundamentals you need, or would want to know about Hyaenidae. Well written and shows that the Hyena is not as bad of a monster as people believe it to be.

Marvelous and fascinating
By Aimless
The spotted hyena has long interested me, and it was time to learn more. This slim volume was exactly the book to satisfy my curiosity--way more complete and better than I expected.

It was the unique, freaky, masculinized genitals of the female spotted hyena that had piqued my interest, and I now know everything I wanted to about them, but this book has all kinds of details about human/hyena interaction in many cultures over thousands of years. It's a tense relationship, between us and those homely hyenas, and there's a lot to say about it. The book is beautifully and sensitively written, scholarly without being pedantic. Illustrations are plentiful and thoughtfully chosen. I'm going to move on to the Otter book in the Reaktion series. If you're a curious person and interested in animals, this is a wonderful series. There are lots of other Reaktion books, on many topics, and I hope they are as good as this one.

All that you need in the pencil and ink technique
By Sergio Chermont
I had saw some demonstrations by H. Borgman in the excelent "Draw it! Paint it!" fascicle some years ago and became fascinated by the author tecnique.

Now with that Dover edition of "Pen and pencil drawing techniques" I found the complete basis of the Borgman Tecniques!

The book is divided in two parts:

1)"Pencil Drawing" - Telling you anything about pencil types and brands, stroke techniques, tonal lessons, colored pencils and many experimental techniques.

2)"Ink techniques" Is too, rich in exemples of types of pen and brushes, kinds of ink, stroke techniques, pen and brush combination, types of papers, colored ink, and many experimental demonstrations.

Soo you have two books in one, covering all that you want to know about that two basic and exciting techniques- pencil and

ink.

Buy that book and you will have a great companion to help you

improve your drawings from sketches to finished work!!

Accessible and inspirational
By Parka
[[VIDEOID:mo3IUAN8OJ8K9DQ]]Pen and Pencil Drawing Techniques has two parts, one dedicated to pencil and the other to pen. The pencils covered are the usual pencils with a small section on coloured pencils. The pens covered are the crow quill and the technical pen.

There are many step by step examples which are easy to follow along. The instructions are concise and well explained. There are the usual lessons on hatching but they are short. The book's method of teaching is by getting to the drawing demonstrations quickly, getting you to practice the techniques learned instantly.

A good variety of tips and techniques are discussed, and that encourages experimentation. It's a book one I go back to often to explore new drawing methods, or just to look at the many beautiful sketches.

It's great for beginners and intermediate artists. It's very accessible and inspirational.

How We Think, by John Dewey

One of America’s foremost philosophers, John Dewey (1859-1952) fought for civil and academic freedom, founded the Progressive School movement, and steadfastly promoted a scientific approach to intellectual development.
In How We Think, Dewey shares his views on the educator’s role in training students to think well. Basing his assertions on the belief that knowledge is strictly relative to human interaction with the world, he considers the need for thought training, its use of natural resources, and its place in school conditions; inductive and deductive reasoning, interpreting facts, and concrete and abstract thinking; the functions of activity, language, and observation in thought training; and many other subjects.
John Dewey’s influence on American education and philosophy is incalculable. This volume, as fresh and inspirational today as it was upon its initial publication a century ago, is essential for anyone active in the field of teaching or about to embark on a career in education.

If you want to *learn* how to think better, read this book!
By Mike
Dewey's "How We Think" is the first book of his I have read. What a joy! I am in the "thick" of my doctoral dissertation, and am struggling to present and unfold my research work in a way that is clear to my audience (in this case, the members of my dissertation committee). Dewey's analysis of thought has helped me to consider important elements of thinking (and writing) such as: (1) the iterative "ebb and flow" between inductive and deductive thinking; (2) what is necessary to train my own mind to think "better"; etc.

Following my reading of "How We Think," I am now reading Dewey's "The Quest for Certainty" and "Knowing and the Known."

Reading "How We Think" is not difficult; however, it does require one to pay attention to what Dewey is saying to his reader audience. Now that I've read through it once, I will likely read through it again (fairly soon), as I work to tighten up my Ph.D. dissertation.

In conclusion, whether you are a student, teacher, or just plain interested in analyzing the world around you, then reading this book is very worthwhile.

Basic ideas to develop your thinking skills
By A Customer
It is very good to see this book appearing in new editions. This is a classic book about thinking. Dewey studies thought from the psychological and philosophical points of view and derives practical ideas for education.

Reading this book, I was surprised to see the applicability of its contents to my main activity field, which is business management. Today's main effort in business research is toward innovation and learning. Thus, thinking skill is probably the most important resource of any organization.

Dewey's view of thinking is surprisingly consistent and as fresh as any of the new management theories. Just to mention one aspect, he warns about the confusion of mental analysis (looking for the general aspects of an object) with physical analysis (dissection into parts), which leads to study living objects as if they were dead. This is the essence of systems thinking, which is so fashionable today!

The ideas Dewey presents about education are very useful for today's business environment. Business leaders, consultants and scholars should look carefully at his advices! His study of work and play is a great lesson of wisdom.

I would strongly recommend this book to anyone seriosly aiming at world class business performance.

This is a Bootleg Edition
By Anon.
This is not the same edition as the one that can be viewed on this page. There is a disclaimer in the front of the book that states that the so-called publisher "recreated this book from the original using Optical Character Recognition software..." Their software was defective. The results are unreadable gibberish. Information from the library they stole it from is integrated into the main body of text on the last page.

I am returning this to Amazon and looking for a legitimate copy of How We Think.

“A must read...I couldn’t put it down.” —Simone Elkeles on Catching Jordan

From the bestselling author of Catching Jordan comes a new teen romance sure to appeal to fans of Sarah Dessen.

SOME RULES WERE MEANT TO BE BROKEN.

Kate has always been the good girl. Too good, according to some people at school—although they have no idea the guilty secret she carries. But this summer, everything is different...

This summer she's a counselor at Cumberland Creek summer camp, and she wants to put the past behind her. This summer Matt is back as a counselor too. He's the first guy she ever kissed, and he's gone from geeky songwriter who loved The Hardy Boys to a buff lifeguard who loves to flirt...with her.

Kate used to think the world was black and white, right and wrong. Turns out, life isn't that easy...

Praise for Miranda Keaneally:

"Fresh, fearless, and totally romantic."—Sarah Ockler, bestselling author of the Twenty Boy Summer

"Catching Jordan is the romantic comedy I've been waiting for. I loved it!"—Jennifer Echols, author of Such a Rush

"An incredibly well-written, beautiful story that balances romance, drama, and comedy perfectly."—Bookish, on Stealing Parker

From School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up-Though devoutly religious, Kate recently compromised her deeply held beliefs to help her best friend, Emily, obtain an abortion-a decision that has strained the girls' friendship and sent Kate reeling. When the teen becomes a camp counselor the summer before starting college, she questions her identity even further. Romance blossoms between Kate and a fellow counselor, Matt, and she befriends Parker, a girl whom Kate used to look down upon for her wild and promiscuous lifestyle. Subsequently, she begins to reevaluate her judgmental attitudes. Though it's primarily her relationships with others that result in Kate's growth from an uptight, narrow-minded wallflower to a self-assured young woman, characterization is sketchy, and characters are largely one-note (the gorgeous, confident love interest; her lost and confused best friend; her strict, unsympathetic boss). Still, Kenneally's spare, straightforward prose, combined with a heavy dose of romance, makes it an accessible novel that should appeal even to reluctant readers. Kate's habit of questions to herself as she encounters conflicts ("But what if I would rather have a relationship with God than friendships with people who don't believe in him like I do?") imbues her with an uncertainty that will resonate with teens. Adolescents will also relate to her simultaneous feelings of longing and guilt as she copes with her burgeoning sexuality. Despite the flaws, teenagers will find this coming-of-age story both entertaining and poignant.-Mahnaz Dar, Library Journalα(c) Copyright 2013. Review
"Miranda Kenneally's best book yet. " - Shelf Awareness for Readers

"Like Diane Court in Say Anything, when sheltered, high-achieving junior Kate dives into a social life for the first time, she experiences the conflict and messiness of life at the same time she experiences her first love." - Justine magazine

"Talented Kenneally is unafraid to tackle challenging topics. Her heroine this go-round is a devout Christian struggling with her faith. Kate is an interesting blend of sweet, confused and judgmental, which doesn't always make her likable. However, she's incredibly realistic. A worthy read with a dreamy male lead." - RT Book Reviews

"An up-and-coming young-adult novelist." - The Washington Post

"Kate's sheltered worldview is well-drawn, and the hesitant first steps on her spiritual journey are handled sensitively . . . Kate's growth will keep readers, Christian or otherwise, reading." - Kirkus

"Kenneally's spare, straightforward prose, combined with a heavy dose of romance, makes it an accessible novel that should appeal even to reluctant readers. . .Teenagers will find this coming-of-age story both entertaining and poignant." - School Library Journal

"Throughout the novel, Kenneally uses a light touch, addressing teenage pregnancy, sexuality, and alcohol use without being pedantic. Wisdom from Kate's father, "Your truth isn't everybody else's truth," provides unanticipated guidance in this compassionate and nuanced exploration of friendship, love, and maturing religious understanding." - Publishers Weekly

"Simply put, if you love contemporary YA romance that has a mix serious issues, drama and steamy scenes then you are going to devour Things I Can't Forget. It is a great addition to the Hundred Oaks series." - Michelle and Leslie's Book Picks

"Kenneally's books have quickly become must–reads," - VOYA

Theoretically, I shouldn't have liked this
By O. Lisa
I'm going to start by stressing that I am not religious. Not at all. For this reason, I tend to be annoyed by books that push religion at me or that in any way promote, display, depict... you got the gist.
So that I rated it so high in itself speaks volumes.

The story is about holier-than-thou Kate, who goes to work as a counselor in a Christian camp during the summer. She's just lost her best friend Emily, who's been kicked out of the house after they discovered she got an abortion. Kate helped her getting it and her sense of guilt, as a friend and as a Christian, is overwhelming. Her beliefs, self righteousness, conception of sin and of what's right or wrong are strong and very much black and white.

For a good part of the book - and for someone maybe for the totality of it - Kate is not a character that one can easily like. She's judgmental, her vision of the world is restricted to her little community, so much so that she got on my nerves almost immediately. Take Parker, take Will, and - le sigh - take Matt. These are likable characters, normal, reasonable, good kids, good at heart not only because they're good Christians (in fact, if you remember Parker from the previous book, you know she messed up quite a lot).

However, what really stands out here and makes this book an almost five star read for me, is the depth of Kate's spiritual growth. There are some big topics tackled in this book and I have to say, they are really well explored. Through Kate's eyes, and with the help of some other characters - her dad's speech, in particular - we see her questioning what she believes and striving to understand what it is that she really believes versus what's been fed to her. Once again, despite me not sharing ANY of the beliefs in this book, I though it was really well made.
Add to that the fact that Kenneally writes some amazing romance and you got yourself a great contemporary YA piece of lit.

Now, I wish the book had ended differently. I wish Kate's spiritual evolution had taken one step further and I wish she's freed herself of all - what I consider - misconceptions, but that probably wouldn't have been in line with Kate's personality and it's just wishful thinking on my part.

I say if you've liked her previous books you really need to read this 'cause it's probably her best book so far.

Sweet and moving

Kate was supposed to attend Cumberland Creek Camp with her best friend, Emily. They were supposed to be counselors this year, but recently, Emily and Kate had a blow-out after Emily got pregnant and had an abortion. Even though Kate took her to the doctor's office, it went against everything Kate believes in, and she is having a very hard time dealing with it.

Determined to put her losses behind her (not only has she lost Emily, but after a knee injury, she was also forced to quit playing soccer), Kate starts her job at the camp, reconnecting with Matt, a guy she hasn't seen in years -- the guy who was her first kiss. Matt has blossomed from a nerdy, scrawny kid into a super-hot college guy, and Kate can't stay away, even though she doesn't agree with some of the things he does. As the weeks pass, Matt and Kate grow closer and Kate is tested both spiritually and emotionally. She learns that life isn't always perfect and things aren't always black and white. Sometimes it's best to just accept the gray.

I will shamefully admit that until recently, I hadn't read any of Ms. Kenneally's books. (Don't judge!) I read Catching Jordan last month and really enjoyed it. With all of the books I had to review, I wasn't able to get to Stealing Parker before reading this book (and I wish I had, because Parker is a major character). With that being said, I still enjoyed this one. In fact I liked it even more than Catching Jordan.

Kate, the MC, was a breath of fresh air even though I have to admit that when I started the book, I prepped myself to be really put off by her. Within the first chapter or two, it's clear that Kate has a very close relationship with God. Now, don't get me wrong -- I'm not put off by religion in the least. In fact I'm A-okay with religion so long as it's not forced on me and so long as it's not used as a weapon or as an excuse to hate. I just get a little uncomfortable talking about religion and politics. Both are things I feel are very personal topics.

I was happy to find that Kate wasn't a hater. She was living the way that was right for her. At first she seems a little preachy, but after spending some time with her, I realized that she was living her life the way that she chose to, so who was I (or any of the characters in the book for that matter) to judge her? Some of them felt as if she was judging them and got all bent out of shape, calling her a Jesus freak and a nosey "b" when she would share her opinion. So what's the difference? It was okay for them to have an opinion, but not Kate? I loved watching Kate grow, and learn new things. What I loved most was that even though she grew, she never lost touch with who she was and what she wanted from her life.

The rest of the characters are just as engaging. I quickly grew to love Matt, and I really like Parker and Will. I must find time to read Stealing Parker ASAP.

I really liked everything about this book. The writing is perfect, the characters all deeply realized and the plot is great. There's something about a contemporary romance that takes place over the summer (be it summer camp, a family vacation to the beach, etc) that I love. I don't know what it is, but I love those types of books. The romance was done well and everything moved at a perfect pace. When I finished the book, I felt a deep sense of gratification.

If you are a fan of Ms. Kenneally's work, then this is a must read. If you haven't read her books, I encourage you to start now. I love her voice and her characters, and she always has a good message to give without being preachy. Don't let the religion thing turn you off if you're not into that. In fact, I encourage you to open your mind and embrace Kate. You may learn something from her.

Another fantastic book by Miranda Kenneally!
By Jetches
I love Miranda Kenneally's writing. I hope that she writes for years to come! Although this book doesn't have the sporty title like the two before it, and although it doesn't really involve sports, doesn't stop this book from rocking like the first two. This book is heavily focused on religion, mainly on Kate's beliefs and where they fit into her life. At first I didn't really like Kate, I thought she was judgemental and almost snobbish, and she was, but then you start to realize that's the point because throughout the novel we see a change in Kate. Not necessarily in her beliefs, but she starts to realize that everyone is entitled to their own. And that is one of the main reasons I loved this book. It talks about religion, but, in my opinion, it talks about how it should be treated. This novel is different that the first two. Not really any sports, the boys are different, and Jordan Woods comes back and actually talks in this one. Not to mention Parker is actually a pretty key character here too! At first I was a little worried about where this book was going but within a couple of chapters I was a goner and knew that I loved it.

Good:

Kate--she isn't trying to be rude or judgemental, she's just trying to figure things out and making mistakes along the way

Matt--He puts his jeep doors back on and wears flip-flops just for her.

Bad:

The only thing I didn't like is the fact that Megan was not really explained (she was kind of picking solely on her and someone should have told her to shove it!), and Brad. I felt like Brad's story was unfinished.

Overall (Writing style, story line, and general):

Overall this book was awesome. I loved how each chapter was her sketching what she is re-telling us. This novel was easy to follow and I smiled, swooned, and worried at all the right times. There were some moments of laughter (especially traded between Matt and Kate), but not a lot because this book seems a little bit more serious than the other two. I liked the approach on Religion even though some may disagree with me, and I found that Miranda Kenneally was making a strong point of view through this novel. I also loved the connetion and flow from book to book. Catching Jordan was all about sports, Stealing Parker about Sports and Religion, and this one about Religion. Miranda Kenneally is someone I foresee being around for a long time in the writing world, and I'm itching to be able to read Racing Savannah in December!
