Getting to know your neighbors

In this day of extremists and allegations of abuse on both sides, it is easy to draw all sorts of misconceptions about another religion. This book comes out of years of friendship and team-teaching a course on comparative religion at Kenyatta University in Nairobi, Kenya. Each of the two authors presents the core beliefs of his own religion followed by the other explaining where his religion is similar or different. The dialogue is respectful without compromising belief. That is probably the greatest strength of this book: each religion speaks for itself and is not interpreted by an unbeliever. Thus the book has value not only for understanding your neighbor's religion, but also for centering on the core values of your own if you belong to one of these two major religious communities. The Christian and Muslim chapters parallel one another in the core beliefs that are compared. A discussion guide in the back can help student or community groups to go deeper in their understanding of one another's perspective.

Devout Christians and Muslims have much in common, including our belief in one sovereign God and the authority of holy books. When it comes to moral standards, we Christians may have significantly more in common with practicing Muslims than with secular society. The obvious difference between us is our view of Jesus Christ and the prophet Muhammad. Muslims view Jesus as a great prophet, but not the living Word of God. The Qur'an puts words in his mouth that predict the coming of Muhammad, the one to whom Muslims believe Moses referred when he said God would send another like him.

The Muslim belief concerning Jesus really comes down to a more profound difference in our views of who God is. While Christians believe that Jesus was the incarnation of the God who created people for relationship with him and has revealed himself in the Bible and in history, Muslims see God as the sovereign Lord and people as his servants. They believe God is gracious and merciful, but it is the mercy of a despot, not a loving Father. I was amazed at how easily Kateregga (the Muslim author) used the word "slave" without seeming to see anything negative in that. Perhaps it is me, the Westerner, who sees slavish obedience without relationship as a negative, but then it was the Christian view of God that shaped Western civilization and gave rise to modern democracy. I was also shocked to learn that Muslims don't believe in the sinful nature of mankind, only mistakes made by basically good people. Given the current state of the world, that struck me as a bit naïve.

Of course, the terrorists you see on TV are no more typical Muslims than abortion clinic bombers are typical evangelicals. This book describes Christianity and Islam in their ideals, not the frail practice of adherents. It's a fascinating book, a must-read if you have Muslims in your community or want to understand what you see in the evening news a little better.

About the Author
Jim Davis was born on July 28, 1945, in Marion, Indiana. He later attended Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, where he distinguished himself by earning one of the lowest cumulative grade point averages in the history of the university. (Incidentally, a fellow classmate named David Letterman earned the other). The Garfield strip was born on June 19, 1978, syndicated in forty-one U.S. newspapers. Today it’s syndicated in more than 2,100 newspapers worldwide with more than 200 million readers, leading Guinness World Records to name Garfield The Most Widely Syndicated Comic Strip in the World. Davis has had many successes with Garfield, including four Emmy Awards for Outstanding Animated Program and induction into the Licensing Hall of Fame (1998), but his most prized awards are from his peers in the National Cartoonist Society: Best Humor Strip (1981 and 1985), the Elzie Segar Award (1990), and the coveted Reuben Award (1990) for overall excellence in cartooning.

Worth the Money?

I felt a little cheated after reading this.

It was a great story, with a good sex scene, but only 80% of the total length was actual story (774 out of a total of 958 locations). I'd rather most of that remaining 20% be filled with more story or another short sex scene than summaries of this author's stories to come. I don't find my next story from author teases, but from going out and searching myself.

After this, I'll be leery of buying anything else from Matthews, despite her nice writing.

Werfsonde is kwalik vermaak. Die boek blyk bloot daarop gemik te wees om omstredenheid te benut as meganisme om gewildheid te werf. Die hoofkarater se losbandigheid wat in kleur en geur verduidelik word, word aanmekaar geflans deur 'n storie sonder diepte of doel.

Die boek bied amper geen bydrae tot Afrikaanse literatuur nie. Hou maar liewer verby.

Use with caution!

Dorothy Hartley's book, first published in 1931, has many good things about it, and also many not-so-good things. The book does have a wealth of black-and-white illustrations reproduced from period sources, and these are outstanding. Ms. Hartley's interpretations of medieval dress, however, are not always on the mark...page 103, for example, has a drawing of a "sleeveless coat" which is actually a mis-interpretation of a fur-trimmed sideless surcote. Also confusing is the "loose side piece" in her diagram of a hunting tunic on page 57...nothing in the period illustrations would indicate a garment cut and worn that way, and it just doesn't make sense.

So...like a lot of other costume texts published in the early 20th century, don't take everything in this book for gospel truth, and double-check the details against other sources if you're looking for true authenticity.

It's a good start to begin from, but the flaws tend to make it a bit strange.

For years I've had a photocopy of this book that I've lugged around, so I was very happy to find this as a reprint edition. One of the great things about this is that the author has done her research, and tends to construct the clothing from simple shapes -- namely if you can sew a straight line, or hem, you can make these costumes. The bad part is that there are some very odd items in here -- one tunic has a flap that ties in place, and the woman's gown is constructed in a very odd way -- you 'can' do it, but the seams look very out of place. Still, the price is good for a begining reinactor, and will instill confidence to go on and make more complicated items.

Potentially useful, if you're careful how you use it

As other reviewers have said, Hartley's book is aimed at theatrical costumers, not reenactors. Because of that fact and because it was written long before archaeological research began to correct long-held misapprehensions about medieval costume, its advice about how a particular costume was made is often quite wrong. But Hartley's book does something I've never seen before in any book on medieval costume--it urges the reader to look at period artwork and think about what the person wearing such a costume in the artwork would have been doing and what tools he or she would have been using while doing it. This insight is, in my opinion, worth the meagre price of the book.

Review of The Mouse-Proof Kitchen

I usually have a lot to say or at least general points I like to mention in reviews but this time I feel so all over the place with this novel... I really don't know what to say or how to begin.

The novel begins with Anna and Tobias welcoming their daughter Freya into the world. Right from the beginning it's obvious that there's something wrong with her. While in the ICU of a an English hospital, they are given a vague diagnosis that their child is severely disabled. They at once begin to loathe this child and how she will ruin their perfectly made plans. One of these plans includes moving to France where Anna can open a restaurant and Tobias to practice his music thing.

Eventually they buy possibly the most dilapidated house in all of France. A house full of mice, bugs, dirt, structural issues, and a plethora of other things that a good home inspection would have requested this house to be condemned. For some obscene reason these parents think that a disabled child can be raised in such a mess since there's always the option of... you know what.

I've felt every sort of emotional imaginable towards Anna and her invisible husband Tobias through much of the novel. The most vivid emotion I remember feeling is anger. But then again I have no children, I have no idea what I'd do or how I'd react if the child I birthed were severely disabled. There bitching and moaning didn't help with my feelings towards them.

Saira Shah writes an emotion-packed debut novel that at times I felt I shouldn't be reading because of it's honesty. I really felt that I was let in on a secret that I shouldn't know and now I can't unknow it. This novel is well written and will cause readers to laugh, cry, boil over in anger, and also count the blessings that they do have. Of course there's no way to truly mouse-proof a kitchen but that's no reason not to see the beauty in the moments filled with rodents.

Different and thought-provoking - 4.5/5 stars

I have to confess, it was the title that made me curious about this book, but I never would have expected to be reading a book that touched so many different emotional responses from me. This book made me angry and sad one minute and smiling and even laughing the next. I read it pretty slow, as I was in some ways afraid to get to the end. Here's why ---

As the story begins Anna, 38 in labor at a London hospital, expecting her first baby. Her husband Tobias arrives while she is already in labor (to myself I'm calling him a jerk already). Anna, is a planner who loves to control what happens in her life, even if that is not always possible. She and Tobias have already discussed moving to Provence once their baby is born, so that their child can be raised in a quaint, peaceful place. Anna is a chef and she is already hoping to open a restaurant in Provence as well. Tobias is more of a fly-by-the-seat of your pants kind of guy; he is a musician and film writer.

When Baby Freya, arrives into the world, it's by an emergency C-section after some heart-rate problems are detected. When she has a seizure right after birth, it is clear she has some issues. MRI's and testing reveal her brain has not developed normally, and has a condition called: Polymicrogyria. She will be severely limited for as long as she lives and her life expectancy is unknown. Her frequent seizures could end her life at anytime. Anna and Tobias are devastated and after learning more details about her daughter's condition, they even consider abandoning Freya and moving on with their lives. They fear that they will be unable to love and care for Freya, believing they could never handle all that responsibility required of someone who is raising a disable child.

Convinced to take their daughter home, even briefly, the couple move to an isolated town in France. To add more chaos to their already stressful lives, they decide to make a rodent-infested, rundown, crumbling, farmhouse home [ I'm picturing a French version of the place in Under the Tuscan Sun]. Anna's obsession with order and control at times serves to shift her focus from her disabled baby to trying to "mouse-proof" her kitchen.

The chapters in this story are the months of the year beginning with the month that Freya was born. There is a quirky cast of characters, each of whom in some way serves to help, or even sometimes distract Anna from the constant pressure and ever-present anxiety that the couple faces 24-7. Anna's annoying mother, was someone who made me especially angry when she came to visit - she is totally self-absorbed, yet, there were a few occasions that she surprised me in a pleasant way as well.

As you can imagine, this book has some gut wrenching moments. How hard it must be to allow yourself to love a very sick baby, never knowing whether it will be taken away from you tomorrow. I was surprised to read that this story, at least in part, was inspired by the personal experience of the author.The Mouse-Proof Kitchen is an incredibly touching story. It is one of those books that would make for a great book club discussion. It reminded me how our some of biggest challenges in life, are usually the things that made us a better, and stronger person in the end.

"She's come to earth to evoke emotion, particularly love."

This novel is a deeply affecting story of Freya who has come into the world with profound neurological disabilities. The birth of the imperfect child, especially one profoundly ill, marks a point of grief for the old life and a deep mourning for old dreams. Anna and Tobias are soon forced to understand the cruel division of loving their child, but knowing they will lose her prematurely. Through the book they take in turn their attempts to deny the bond. In a brash effort, they take move to a ruined manse in France in order to pursue the dreams that remain. Obviously, one goal is a mouse proof kitchen that will never come true.

The author notes that while the book is fiction, the child is based on her own child. The parents in the book are a world different than she and her partner, yet each approach is a struggle to deal with this most difficult of blessings. As Anna's mother says, "You can't cheat fate." These characters make some choices that wouldn't be my choices, but they are choices motivated by their fear of a love that will most certainly break their hearts. Their parallel efforts with their home provide a great metaphor for the rest of their lives, and they happen to be amusing and interesting. I found this book to be a love story, but not a fairy tale one, a real life love story.

Grandma is sitting in her rocking chair when I walk through the door. The television is showing an old episode of Perry Mason.

“You still up?”

She doesn’t answer. The chair is rocking; her eyes are closed. Can’t tell if she’s watching the TV or if it’s watching her.

The remote is in her lap. I try not to make too much noise as I walk through the dining room to where her chair is positioned in the living room. Grab the remote and hit the power off button.

“I was watching that.”

“Looked like the opposite to me.”

“What you see isn’t always how it looks,” she says with her eyes still closed.

I roll my eyes. Wish I would’ve gone straight home. Tonight is not the night for Grandma and her I-was-Confucius-in-my-past-life moments.

“What brings you by?”

I wonder the same thing myself. “Left a friend’s house not far from here. Wanted to stop by and see how you’re doing.”

She pulls her glasses down from the top of her head, checks the time. Looks up at me with questioning eyes. “It’s well after midnight. The only thing you’re going to see at this hour is me sleeping.” She yawns. “Now, tell me, what’s the real reason you’re here?”

I take a deep breath. Sit on the edge of the green sofa that’s been here for as long as I can remember. Try not to get too comfortable.

“I’m waiting,” she presses.

“It’s nothing. Really.”

“If it was nothing, you wouldn’t be here. Especially not at this hour.”

I exhale. “Guess I’m looking for answers.”

“Here we go again.” She straightens up in the rocking chair. “How many times do I have to tell you that I don’t have the answers, Fatima?”

My adrenaline pumps. “For some reason, I don’t believe you.”

“You saying I’m lying?”

I look at her with raised eyebrows. “You tell me.”

She gets up from her rocking chair. Stands in front of me with hands on her spreading hips. “Watch your mouth. I raised you with better manners than that. Didn’t let you talk to me like that as a child and I’ll be damned if I let you talk to me like you don’t have any sense now.”

I get up from my seat. Throw some gasoline on her growing fire. “Then quit treating me like a kid. I’m not far from thirty’s door and I have yet to know where my parents are. Don’t even know if they’re dead or alive. Do you even care? She’s your daughter, for goodness sake.”

My heart is beating so hard it feels like my chest is about to explode. Breathing is tight. An asthma attack is on the horizon. I grab my purse, search its contents for my inhaler. It’s not in there. It dawns on me . . . I don’t have asthma.

“You need to just let it go, Fatima. Look what it’s doing to you.”

I fume. “Why are you protecting her?”

My mother’s mother stares me down. Tries to understand my need to understand. “Why won’t you just leave well enough alone?”

I’ve tried to make it without my parents. Tried to live my life without thinking of them, wondering where they are. But every day, my struggle grows harder. Each day, I feel a piece of history drifting further away from me. Too many pieces of the puzzle are missing. If only Grandma would talk, give me some kind of clue. She’s stubborn as a mule; has always been that way.

“I can’t. As long as I have breath in my body, I’ll never leave it alone.”

“Sometimes the truth can kill you.”

With my keys in hand, I tell her, “Too late. I died a long time ago.”

Healing...

Our past can cause us to become prisoners of our own private hell. The hardest thing about writing a review is when you read a book that is so close to "home." I'm a firm believer in... when a student is ready - a teacher/master will appear, but in this case - it was a book.

Parallel Pasts introduces us to Cory & Fatima - who are so consumed by their pasts it causes them to be afraid to live in the now. They are each fighting their own private demons, and that's one of the things that connect them. Before they can truly get to know each other, they have to come to terms with their pasts. Will they be able to move forward? Or will they let their pasts consume their lives?

Julia Blues has delivered a beautifully written novel that's heartbreaking, inspiring, and most of all honest. This debut novel has a solid believable plot, along with dialogue that is rich in detail. The Author did an extraordinary job of creating characters that will stay with the reader long after you have read this novel. I really enjoyed Cory & Fatima's journey of growing, learning, and loving. One thing Author Julia Blues seems to do so effortlessly is introducing readers to numerous characters and having them fit together perfectly in the story.

I finished this book feeling a sense of renewal. Life is definitely a journey filled twists & turns, but we have to continue to hold on through it all.

The Past Has A Future

"Parallel Pasts," the debut novel of Julia Blues, is nothing short of magnificent! I was swept away in a world of unanswered questions, unsolved mysteries, and a lingering desire to know why secrets have such a profound impact on our lives.

Fatima and Cory are two lost souls the universe chooses to connect at a critical juncture. Both carry childhood scars and want nothing more than to be loved and understood. A series of events, executed with perfection by Blues, uncover the root causes of the scars and leaves the characters with the mission to either wallow in self pity or pick up their shattered pieces and start anew. Fresh dialogue, jaw-dropping scenes, and intricate melding of details make this book a page turner. I would love to see more of the characters' stories in future works. (hint hint) :-)

Damaged Souls

Fatima was abandoned by her parents when she was four and raised by her maternal grandmother. Cory Hines grew up with an abusive father and a mother who was distant. The chemistry between the two was great from the start. Their pasts have scarred them to the point of not knowing love. Will these two damaged souls continue to run from their pasts?

I couldn't believe this was a debut. "Parallel Pasts" pulls you in from the beginning and holds you till the end. Even though the characters have individual issues, the book flows well. The emotions are raw, making you feel as though you're present during all the turmoil. Once you learn of their pasts, you understand why decisions are made and the difficulties associated with them. Julia Blues penned a highly recommended story that leaves you wanting more.
