"The Last Word is Raymond Chandler meets Arrested Development. Zany, witty, and full of dark surprises, Lisa Lutz's novel is pure fun—and Izzy Spellman, PI, tops the list of 'Fictional Characters I'd Like to Meet for a Bourbon.'"—Gillian Flynn, New York Times bestselling author of Gone Girl

The sixth installment of the critically acclaimed, New York Times bestselling, Edgar- and Macavity-nominated and Alex Award-winning series by Lisa Lutz, finds our intrepid heroine of the series, Isabel Spellman, PI, at a crossroads. Izzy is used to being followed, extorted, and questioned—all occupational hazards of working at her family’s firm, Spellman Investigations. Her little sister, Rae, once tailed Izzy for weeks on end to discover the identity of Izzy’s boyfriend. Her mother, Olivia, once blackmailed Izzy with photographic evidence of Prom Night 1994. It seemed that Spellman vigilance would dissipate after Izzy was fired for breaching client confidentiality, but then Izzy avenged her dismissal by staging a hostile takeover of the company. She should have known better than to think she could put such shenanigans behind her.

In The Last Word, Izzy’s troubles are just beginning. After her takeover of Spellman Investigations, her employees are the furthest thing from collegial...and Izzy finds herself struggling to pay the bills. But when she is accused of embezzling from a former client, the ridiculously wealthy Mr. Slayter, the stakes become immense. If Izzy gets indicted, she could lose her PI license and the Spellman family’s livelihood, not to mention her own freedom. Is this the end of Izzy Spellman, PI?

The Last Word is, hands down, the most powerful book in the bestselling, award-nominated Spellman series.

*Starred Review* Trouble always has a way of finding Isabel Spellman, the snarky, whip-smart sleuth at the heart of Lutz’s best-selling series. Although Izzy has plenty of clients to keep her busy, much of her time is devoted to dealing with the mischievous staff at Spellman Investigations, aka her own family. Her mother and father lack any semblance of professionalism, opting to hide out in their bedroom sipping coffee rather than attending firm meetings (or do much work, for that matter). And Izzy’s sassy younger sister, Rae, has proved herself a master (mistress?) of blackmail and bribes. This time around, however, Izzy’s woes stem not from next of kin but from an uberwealthy former client named Edward Slayter, who’s accused Izzy of embezzlement. Slayter, it turns out, has early-stage Alzheimer’s and is desperate to hide his diagnosis from colleagues and friends. Izzy is doing her best to keep Slayter’s secret—and save her own neck. Many of Lutz’s quirky characters make appearances here, from Izzy’s charming ex-boyfriend (and San Francisco cop) Henry Stone to her brother, David, who’s traded the buttoned-up world of high finance for the demanding—and disheveled—life of a stay-at-home dad. Edgar-nominated Lutz is in fine form, delivering another killer whodunit packed with plot twists and wit. --Allison Block

“The sly trick of Lisa Lutz’s Spellman novels is that they’re so funny and so smart that you’re taken by surprise by all the insights they offer---about loneliness, about the tumult of love and most of all about the tender chaos of families. Like Raymond Chandler-meets-Salinger’s Glass family, with [Spellman Six], Lutz offers her richest, funniest and most bittersweet Spellman tale to date.” (Megan Abbott, author of THE END OF EVERYTHING and DARE ME )

“Lutz delivers another rollicking good time in her sixth novel.” (Publishers Weekly )

“Lisa Lutz's Spellman books are always hilarious, but Trail of the Spellmans reminded me how serious funny books can be. As precocious as the Spellman kids have always been, they're only now really coming of age and the result is, yes, hilarious, but also tender and melancholy and full of hard-won wisdom. This one's going to stay with readers for a long time.” (Laura Lippman, award-winning author of over 15 books including the recent novel I'd Know You Anywhere and the Tess Monaghan series )

Mostly for die-hard fans
By zgramma
I loved the first four books, and (at the time) believed the fourth "document" to be a satisfying and fitting end to the series. Nonetheless, I was pleased to hear there was to be more Izzy, trusting the skill of the author not to fall into the Evanovich-like formula trap. After reading "The Trail of the Spellmans," I could wish she had fallen in that trap. I found the fifth book unsatisfying, unpleasant, inconsistent, and heavy-handed.

That SHOULD have cured me of wanting to read "The Last Word," but like those about to witness a train wreck, I just couldn't turn my eyes away. TLW appears to close the Isabel Spellman saga once and for all. It continues some of the themes and personal story lines from TotS, introduces new professional and personal challenges to Isabel (all of which seem to overwhelm her), and serves as a bridge to the next series, evidently featuring Rae. (I see another Evanovich-type trap looming. Sigh).

TLW doesn't have the fun, snarky, and light touch of the first four Spellman novels, but (to its credit) it doesn't seem to aspire to that either. Characters are consistent with TotS, most of the plot lines are neatly tied, and if you want to keep up with the author's next series, you will probably need to read Documents* (*finger quotes -- sorry, couldn't resist) 5 and 6. If, (like me), you're not particularly interested in Rae Spellman, you might want to stop at book #4.

Same book, different title!
By Shari
i know it's partly my fault for not paying attention, but why in the world did they re-release the same book under a different title!! I wasted $15 on a book that I already have and read awhile ago!! it took a couple chapters to realize this since she tends to talk about past "documents" a lot. This is not the way to sell books!

Latest release in the hilarious Spellman series
By misplaced cajun
Izzy is in a bit of a bind. After performing a hostile takeover of the family business, she's now the boss but that doesn't mean that anyone listens to her. In fact, both of her parents are doing everything they can to undermine her authority - somewhat understandable considering Izzy became a bit of a dictator there for a while. But now the bank records are kind of wonky and Izzy is being accused of embezzling from one of her clients. She knows it's a set up but the feds aren't going to just take her word for it.

Each and every new Spellman book (or book from Lisa Lutz for that matter) is a guaranteed hilarious read! THE LAST WORD was certainly no exception in that regard. If you've not had the pleasure, you're really missing out. Never fear, all previous five books are now out in paperback and if you're really anxious, you can kind of dive in with this sixth installment without issue (but you'll have to go back to the beginning to get all the references.)

I'm kind of in awe of how Lisa Lutz's brain works. I mean she includes footnotes for goodness sake! If you've read any of her books, you know her characters are pretty carefully drawn, too: she's got individual profiles of each one, even going so far as to outline their childhood antics as well (some of which play into individual stories).

Plus, she's done this: [...] Oh, yes, it's for real. Lisa Lutz is a bit of a genius in my opinion!

(Is it wrong for me to say that Izzy Spellman is kind of my hero? I mean, I know she's a thirty-something who isn't really all that grown up, but I'm a thirty-something who doesn't really FEEL all that grown up! And while I'd never do half the things Izzy does, it's mostly because I'd never have the nerve.)

Besides being fall on the floor and laugh out loud funny, with a set of the most fabulous characters in fiction (as if that weren't enough), THE LAST WORD is a darn good story. Lisa Lutz knows how to plot an interesting mystery. The addition of Rae's new conflict resolution services here is a bonus, too, adding an interesting new aspect to the stories (and possibly some fresh new fodder for additional Spellman books).

We'll just have to wait and see what Lutz has up her sleeve next. I'm hoping this is not the last we'll see of the Spellmans.
