It hardly seems credible today that a nineteen-year-old boy, just commissioned into the Seaforth Highlanders, could lead a platoon of men into the carnage of the Battle of the Somme. Or that, as the machine gun bullets whistled past and shells exploded, he could maintain his own morale to lead a platoon, keeping its discipline and cohesion, in spite of desperate losses. Norman Collins, the author of this superb memoir, was this remarkable man.Despite being wounded three times, Norman lived to see his hundredth birthday so becoming one of the last surviving combatants of this terrible conflict. Through his eloquent memories recorded late in life and a rare collection of letters that he wrote from the front, he tells the story of his life as a young subaltern at the front during 1916 and 1917. Using Norman’s own words, this book follows him from his childhood in Hartlepool to his subsequent service in France. The book also covers such shattering events as the German naval assault on Hartlepool in December 1914 when, as a seventeen-year-old, Norman was subjected to as big a bombardment as any occurring on the Western Front at that time.Norman’s enlistment and training are covered in detail in his letters, as is his posting to France and the epic attack at Beaumont Hamel in November 1916. Service at Arras in April 1917 and in the weeks prior to the Third Battle for Ypres is also recorded before serious injury hospitalized him for a year.Norman’s love for, and devotion to, the men under his command shine out in this book and his stories are gripping and deeply moving. They are illustrated by a rare collection of private photographs taken at or near the front by Norman himself, although the use of a camera was strictly proscribed by the Army. Most of the images have never been published before.

Review
This fantastic little WWI book is a must for any budding historians. Collins was underage when he joined the Seaforth Highlanders and was a 19-year-old officer when he led at the battle of the Somme. This book contains extracts from his diaries and a remarkable personal collection of photographs which lend this account a poignancy and immediacy which is often breathtaking. - Scottish Field This is a harrowing tale of battle, loss and the horrors of war. - Scotland Magazine
About the Author
Richard van Emden has interviewed over 270 veterans of the Great War and has written widely on the 1914-18 conflict. Previous books include Britain's Last Tommies, Boy Soldiers of the Great War, All Quiet on the Home Front, Prisoners of the Kaiser and the top five best-selling The Trench. He has visited the Somme and Ypres every year since 1985 and has an expert knowledge of the First World War battlefields. The Author came across Norman Collins while researching his best selling TV tie-in book Veterans. He was immediately struck by this truly remarkable character, who was then over 100 years old. Sadly Norman has now died but Richard Van Emden had not been deterred from writing what is by any standard a most exhilarating memoir of an exceptional veteran. He currently lives in London.

A Giant of a Man!
By Cruising Lover
I not only have one of the original hard copies, I was gifted this lifetime with the great pleasure of knowing Norman Collins for many years. He was/is one of the most incredible human beings it has been my pleasure to know this time around. Tiny in physical stature, he was a giant in personality, ethics, intelligence and overall humanity. His memory for detail, beginning from the time he was 3 years old and viewed the Coronation of the Queen, was utterly prolific. (Among other things, he had a rose garden for many years with over 5000 varieties, and he knew every one of them by name and with any unusual details!) Whenever I was over the Pond, I cherished the time spent with him as he regaled me with fascinating stories of his life and times, including WWII during which he served with such distinction, that Hitlet took note and placed him on a list of 100 souls to be executed when Germany invaded and conquered England.
The book itself chronicles the time of his youth, his desire to get into the war after witnessing Germany's first naval shelling of the Scottish coast and, later, the absolute horrors of that war. Buried alive by a shell burst at The Somme, he was only saved because one of his fellow officers happened to be looking at him when it occurred and was able to muster a few others to dig Norman out. He later served in India. He told me that after his adventures in service, he decided to live every day as if it were his last. He did so, much to the benefit of many. It was an honour to know this great man and I'm immensely pleased to know his publishers have been wise enough to republish this work. England should never forget him and his benefit to the nation during two tumultuous wars as well as his business contributions to a great industry, Perkins Engines, in which he had a powerful impact.
I recommend this book unreservedly and can only hope that children growing up read it and learn the real horrors of war and that the blood is not on a faked screen.

An Enthralling Read
By Ruth A Walker
I couldn't put this book down as it went through Norman's early life, enlistment and through to his service in World War One. In the book you follow Norman's progress from an optimistic and excited boy to a battle weary veteran and some of what is described in the book is more than a bit sobering as when Norman talks about the dying soldiers left out in the dark and the rain after a battle and how it was terrible to hear them but they couldn't help them. I did find his enthusiasm, strength of character and willingness to endure great hardships quite inspiring, in this 'Last Man Standing' reminded me of another great book 'A Fortunate Life' by A.B. Facey. I couldn't help but wonder if the young people of today would have these qualities if they needed them.

First Rate Memoir of the War to End All Wars
By NightRanger
This is a World War I memoir told from the viewpoint of a Rear Ranks Rudy who worked himself into a commission. His 17 weeks at the front earned him 14 months in the hospital recovering from 3 wounds in 6 months. He lived to the age of 100 and, fortunately for succeeding generations, his memoirs were transcribed for this book.
His viewpoint is one of honesty and strictly from the trench level, not some headquarters. There are no grand analysis, no maneuver descriptions but there is a wealth of first rate descriptions of the gut twisting agony of going "over the top" and suffering through gas attacks. If you read this as a story, not a tome of military tactics, you will not be disappointed.
