knowing java is useful
By W Boudville
GateIn offers a quick and powerful way to code a portal from scratch. The text shows how in the simplest configuration of the default portal, you get right out of the box pages for a site map, a sign in, a registration, a means to change the display language and a home page. If you have looked at existing portal-type websites, you should recognise these pages as very commonly occurring. Hence GateIn can be an immense timesaver. No need to write those types of pages from scratch.

Behind the scenes, you can also see that GateIn offers different roles to those tasked with running the website. There could be a Manager and an Administrator. The Manager is a person who does not have to have a computing background. This is important, for GateIn acknowledges the pragmatic reality that in a company you often have this situation. In contrast, the Administrator has more technical tasks.

Going through the book you can see many functionalities that are useful. Like writing a web page and then defining the start and end dates for when it will be visible on the website.

Another very nice feature is the deep integration of internationalisation [i18n]. Those readers from a java background will recognise how GateIn uses Resource Bundle files in which to store text in various languages that your website will support. This text is typically for the labels in the web pages. These properties files are straightforward to populate; one file per language. You still need to somehow find the translations of words, to fill those files. That is external to GateIn.

Along these lines, while the book does not exactly require knowledge of java, many of the examples are XML snippets where java pathnames are used. It would help greatly if you end up being the Administrator that you are conversant in java. Because the XML makes a lot more sense.

Outdated

At least as of GateIn 3.5 on JBoss 7, this book is now out dated. The recipes for configuring SSO, LDAP and portal databases is no longer applicable.

Wide Introductory Overview of GateIn
By Dustin Marx
GateIn Cookbook provides numerous recipes covering a wide variety of tasks related to using JBoss/eXo GateIn Portal. Although these recipes cover areas as diverse as developing portlets, securing the portal, using frameworks with the portal, managing gadgets in the portal, and migrating to GateIn from other portals, there are also recipes with introductory material for those with no GateIn experience. Chapter 1 is devoted to recipes on "Getting Started" and provides background information about the product and about downloading, installing, and configuring it. Chapters 2 and 3 contain recipes for basic administration/management of GateIn with the GUI tool and XML respectively.

I was provided an electronic copy (PDF) of GateIn Cookbook by Packt Publishing to review, but had never used GateIn before reading this book. Even without any prior experience using GateIn, I found the early chapters of the book to provide enough background and introductory information to become comfortable with GateIn and be prepared for more advanced chapters in the book. I did find my Java, Java EE, REST, and XML experience to be highly beneficial in understanding what I read in the book.

GateIn Cookbook provides numerous screen snapshots (with colors in the electronic edition) to demonstrate the portal in action. The book also provides extensive code listings for the XML that can be used for configuration as well as some Java, Groovy, and JavaScript code.

GateIn Cookbook combines the advantages of the cookbook style (specific, focused recipes) with good introductory information suitable for the reader new to GateIn. Although the book focuses on GateIn specifically (as its title suggests), it also provides information on portals and portlets in general and on underlying standards and Java Specification Requests.
