Steven Wishnia is a New York-based musician and journalist. Born on the Lower East Side, he grew up in Brooklyn, New England, Edinburgh, and Long Island. He has played in numerous bands, including the False Prophets, an eclectic punk group that recorded two albums released by Alternative Tentacles. After the False Prophets broke up in 1987, he earned an MA at New York University's School of Journalism, writing for failing newspapers before working for many years as news editor at High Times. Recipient of two New York City Independent Press Association awards, he currently works as a freelance writer and editor, most often for AlterNet.org and Junior Scholastic, and often performs musically with artist Mac McGill.

Steven Wishnia is an award-winning journalist and veteran editor. His writing has appeared in the Nation, the Progressive, the Village Voice, Alternet.org, and High Times, among other publications. As a musician, he may be best known as the '80s punk band False Prophets' bass player.

An (musical) Education

I feel like I learned so much about the New York punk scene through this book. This guy clearly knows his history and understands the mechanics of a rock band. Of the major characters Tina was by far the most engaging; she feels like an accurate portrait of a female rock musician rather than just a fantasy of a rocker chick. Wishnia also does a beautiful job of depicting a lost New York that's only remembered by a small subset of people. I would suggest this book for anyone interested in the punk scene or how New York has changed in the past two decades.

Puts me right back in the 1990s.

I don't typically review books here but this one is pretty unique. Author does a good job of telling this story. Moves along with interesting characters.
Probably my only complaint is a personal one in that I didn't realize how much the struggles I had in 90s NYC could be revived by reading it. But your mileage may vary, right?
Solid writing. Good narrative and a unique place and time is restructured very well here.

Atmospheric until it bleeds

A surgically frank depiction of not just a punk rock life but a life besotted, possessed by the music and ideas of that movement. The characters' lives are also--inevitably?--slammed against the state of the economy and need more than just passion to survive the Great American Dumbdown. Bike messenger Underend, snotty and sweaty and sincere, growls and snarks so much I really wanted to see him go under a bus at first. This changed somewhere between the material about rock'n'roll parenthood (which could easily be the nucleus of another good book) and flashbacks to his lost self, the horny, funny young kid on the road. One gains respect for the musician and his tatterdemalion circle. Sorry to reach the end.
If you listen to Patti Smith, the Dolls, Lou Reed or the Ramones, or if you read Just Kids or Godspeed, you definitely want to read this.
