The impact of abuse is devastating in the short term and the long term. Childhood abuse determines how we will be as adults. If we do not experience love very early in childhood, if there is no one to love us, we feel abandoned, and as adults there is a strong possibility that we will have poor self-esteem, feel worthless and unloveable. We will find it difficult to love as we live inside our shell, built in early childhood. This shell is almost indestructable, and onlly our tears for our hurt inner child can melt this shell. Those who are in relationship with us suffer as we are unable to offer them the warmth of love. We can overcome this if we manage to make contact with this hurt child. I feel that the only way to do this is through therapy, and even at that it is very difficult. But it can be done. Jim O'Shea

I found that like a lot of self help books they spend an inordinate amount of time explaining the obvious. This book also describes what all sorts of abuse is and the effects it has on people which is pretty much well known, but then no real solutions as to how to deal with this abuse: verbal, sexual, emotional, which was the reason I purchased the book in the first place. The few solutions offered are not helpful, "try being self-employed" as a solution for workplace bullying. That is not an option for many people, and anyway the whole bullying phenomenon needs to be addressed and dealt with. There are legal avenues for sexual harassment in the workplace which could be dealt with easily in a lot of cases but constant hostile treatment from co-workers and sabotage has no legal solutions. This is changing hopefully and it can't come soon enough. I would prefer more help for the victims of this pain and this book did not really offer much in that regard so would not recommend it.
