Exceeded my expectations

I will admit to being one of those annoying readers who prefers to hear about the exploits of Sith and Jedi, or at least somewhat Force-Sensitive characters. So even though I have read previous Drew Karpyshyn novels, I was a tad bit hesitant about pre-ordering this book--after all, I'm still relatively new to the Star Wars universe, so it would have been a simple matter to make a note of this one for later and pursue a different novel while I waited for mass-market paperbacks to hit the shelves.
Boy, am I glad I didn't. This book is outstanding.
I found the characters to be believable, relatable, and enjoyable to read about. They have real problems, regrets, expectations, and (dramatic gasp), flaws! They make mistakes--sometimes very big ones--and they kick themselves for it later. One icident that stuck out in my mine was when Theron sustained a shoulder injury early on that ended up troubling him later. This may not seem like much, but its one of the things that makes Karpyshyn a great author: he understands that people can't shake off injuries just like that, and that his characters won't have unlimited stamina.
I was glad to have read The Lost Suns graphic novel just a few weeks prior to this. Without it, though, you won't be lost-- Karpyshyn understands his audience, and that the Star Wars universe really is vast: every reader may not necessarily be up to speed on the latest events. Karpyshyn manages to catch the reader up without delving into tedious summarizations or (shudder) convenient flash-backs.
This book was definitely worth dropping the extra couple of dollars to pre-order it. I highly recommend it.

Hit and Miss
I went into this book as a player of SWTOR and a fan of the lore. I had modest expectations and in some ways it greatly surpassed them while in others it fell short. I'd like to start with the strongest point of the book though, the main character, Theron Shan.
Theron is a rather interesting main character and he has a unique perspective on the things that take place around him. He has history with the Jedi even though he isn't a force user himself and is knowledgable on their beliefs and practices though he doesnt follow them. Theron displays this by often going from cynical and indulgent about things such as the force to naive and idealistic on matters of state and the war. That being said, this is such a good main character. Regardless of his views on things he is very analytical and is written in a way where you can really understand what he is thinking as he acquires more information. I always thought the Republic SIS (the republic's covert spy and operations network) was underused in the old Republic era lore and this really adds some nice flavor and depth to their agents and operations. That being said, Theron also has a bit of a backstory with Grand Master of the Jedi Satele Shan and Supreme Republic Commander Jace Malcom and this is where it starts to become more of a mixed bag as the story that is included often feels tacked on for dramatic effect or is just awkward.
There are more characters than Theron, Satele, and Jace though, and these characters often feel flat and uninteresting even when you want to feel otherwise. Theron has a female Twilek friend in a criminal gang that he often goes out of his way for and seems to really care for from his youth and his past with the Jedi. However, nothing ever really comes from or changes in
their odd relationship aside from her proving to be a useful contact later in the story. He is also accompanied by Master Gnost Dural whom some will remember from the SWTOR historical archives. He is a typical Jedi Master with the twist of the main villan being his former apprentice. He has little interest in saving her though and the only reason I cared about him was because of him being the same character who narrated the historical archives on the SWTOR website. He does his job as a Jedi well, but there is little depth or emotional connection to be had with his character. The villians are what you would expect from the Sith and, like Gnost Dural, they do their job without having any real depth or interest aside from the political machinations of the sith.
Another thing that was nice in this book was being able to see the latest events in the Old Republic timeline and how the war between the Republic and Sith Empire was going in its latest incarnation. They throw you a bone with some glimpses of politics and comments pointing to the larger scope of the war but its nothign particulary in depth or substantial which I found a letdown and took away from the sense of scale and conflict. But in the end this is Therons story and all other devices
serve as a medium to tell it.
It's a decent book in the Old Republic series and the character of Theron Shan is really the selling point of this book in my opinion. I would even like to see more SIS operations detailing new events in the war centered around his viewpoint or have him reappear as a supporting character in future peices of lore. But if you are looking for a good stand alone book that can really suck you into the Old Republic era I would give this a pass.

An Incredibly Fun Book

Theron Shan: son of Jedi Grandmaster Satele Shan, descendent of the famous Jedi-turned-Sith-turned-back-to-Jedi Revan and Bastila Shan, and (wait for it) NOT Force sensitive. That’s right, despite his rich lineage in the Jedi Order the hero of Annihilation lacks any ability to use the Force. On top of it all, his mother has effectively disavowed him as the secret of his parentage would be the biggest scandal this side of the Hydian way. Not surprisingly, Theron, accustomed to secrecy, chooses a career in Republic intelligence and when the Sith acquire a new weapon capable of decimating starfleets, the Republic assigns him to take it down.
The plot of the novel is fairly standard: the Sith Empire has a superweapon and our heroes attempt to stop it, nothing that hasn’t already been done. Despite this, the strongest part of Annihilation would be its characters - Theron’s backstory alone is enough to pique interest. A common element in Star Wars is the hereditary nature Force-sensitivity causing characters related to some great Jedi (e.g Luke) to be locked-in to be great Jedi themselves. In contrast, Theron has found his own path fighting battles of information rather than of lightsabers. What’s more, Theron often comes off as cynical towards the Jedi believing them to be somewhat overrated but never to the point of disrespect which I found quite refreshing. Add to that his tendency to disregard orders and he makes for a very fun character to read.
Other characters include Teff’ith the smuggler who reluctantly found her way into Theron’s team and Gnost-Dural, a Jedi Master who must come to terms with the fact that his fallen Padawan is the very enemy the three of them must face (and, incidentally, he’s the guy who voices the galactic timeline record videos). This slew of colorful characters made for a very entertaining character dynamic reminiscent of Luke’s first trip aboard the Millennium Falcon and allowed for great dialogue between them.
To fully enjoy this novel one has to come in with the right expectations. Don’t go in expecting a deep story, compelling narrative, or philosophical views of the nature of the Force. Instead, expect a fun story full of action, suspense, and humor. I would also recommend being familiar with some parts of The Old Republic video game as the book does make references to characters and events in the game, but the book can still be enjoyed without that knowledge.
