"The Ewoldsen Trail in Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park leads through a dense coastal redwood forest in McWay Canyon. The trail crosses several bridges as it heads up to the steep ridge separating McWay and Partington Canyons. From the grassy coastal cliffs are amazing overlooks perched on the edge of the cliffs. The views extend across the park and far beyond, showcasing the jagged coastline and endless mountain ridges and valleys. En route to the ridgetop overlooks is Canyon Falls, a long, narrow, two-tiered waterfall on the South Fork of McWay Creek. The 70-foot cataract cascades off fern-covered rock cliffs in a lush grotto at the back of a serene canyon." (followed by driving and hiking directions, map)

Key words: coast and day hike
By David Kohler
This review speaks only for the book's format and NOT for the accuracy of its information.
Good Points
· Very complete. Stretches from Monterey to Carpenteria and covers many coastal hikes missing in other guides
· Easily understood writing style that gives the high points for each trail
· Two-dimensional map illustration for each trail. Appears to be accurate and to scale
· Current (based on ground-checking three listed trails and comparison to other guides for the area)
Weak Points
· Format. Each trail has exactly two pages for narrative and map. I have the feeling that this restricts what the author could have added to the trail narrative
· No topo info or trail profile. Anyone who has no trouble reading topo maps will find the illustrations in this guide limiting. Although the author includes the elevation gain for each trail, this is insufficient for the reader to determine just how tough any trail may be
· Very limited scope inland. "Coast" is in the title and "coast" is what is meant. You won't find much info for trails in Monterey county that have trailheads on the coast but extend inland
· No rating scheme. The author makes no attempt to rate any single hike more scenic or more difficult than any other hike
· No naturalist guide. This book is strictly for trail info
· No GPS waypoint info. Many of us now have handheld GPS receivers and want waypoints for trailheads, trail intersections, and scenic points as a minimum requirement
Summary: Sticking to its title, this book is a complete listing of coastal day hikes from Monterey to Carpenteria. Topo and GPS users or naturalist hikers will need additional resources beyond this book

The Coast Less Travelled By
By Fritz R. Ward
It has been seven years since the first edition of 'Day Hikes on the California Central Coast' was published. In some ways, one could argue that not a lot changes on the central coast, and indeed many of the trails that were described in the first edition are still found in this one. But the second edition covers far more territory than the the first. Instead of going from Santa Barbara in the South to Monterey in the north, this new edition extends the central coast through Santa Cruz county and in the process introduces readers of the older version to many new hiking opportunities.
Like all the books in the Day Hike series, this one focuses on relatively easy walks, most of which are under 5 miles. Indeed, many of the hikes are less than three miles and those driving along the coast looking for a spot to stretch their legs will find ample opportunities on paths that are under 1 mile in length. Route descriptions are for the most part straight forward, and each hike suggestion includes a sketch map of the trail which is usually all one needs to find your way around.
Stone includes several trails in state parks, natural areas, and other popular tourist sites, but one of the strengths of this book, and others in the series, is the number of trails found in city parks and small wildlife preserves. Usually only locals are aware of these hidden gems but using the earlier edition of this book, I discovered several scenic hikes like the Sweet Springs Nature Preserve that I might never have found otherwise. Indeed, the best reason to buy this book is that careful use of it can result in finding quiet parts of the coast for yourself, even during high tourist season.
But this feature is not enough for me to give the book 5 stars. There are a couple of problems with the book that concern me. In the first instance, like the other books in this series, the only photos you will find in this volume are on the cover. I like to catch a glimpse of the scenery that awaits me on a new trail and all of Robert Stone's books come up short in this regard. I am also concerned, however, about some of the trails described in this book in particular. It includes some absolute gems like the Skyline to the Sea Trail and several walks on the Point Lobos Peninsula. But Stone also includes the "nature" trail at Ragged Point Inn in this book. That trail was always steep, but of late it has become overgrown and is washed out in several places. Indeed, having hiked it in the last few months, I would describe it as outright dangerous if the weather is at all damp. Yet Stone's description of it is virtually unchanged. Similarly, a portion of the trail at Carpenteria Salt Marsh was no longer as described in the earlier edition when I last hiked it, but the sketch map appears the same in the updated edition. I am therefore moderately concerned that the author may not have rechecked all the trails for the new edition. So be sure to exercise caution when you stop for some of these hikes.
That said, I still recommend this book. It makes a nice companion volume to Stone's 'Day Hikes on the California Southern Coast.' If Stone should ever write a volume covering the north coast, then one could plan an entire summer vacation around these guides. The California Coast is beautiful, and seeing it by foot, even if only briefly, is the best way to experience this wonderful portion of the Golden State.

Short Walks along California's Central Coast
By Fritz R. Ward
This review focuses on the content of the book and does not, except briefly, discuss the format.
California's central coast offers some of the most beautiful hiking, and least populated, areas of the state. The region from Monterey to Santa Barbara county also provides four season recreation. Temperatures in the winter are typically only 10 degrees cooler than those found in the summer months and while considerable rain falls in the winter, it is nowhere near as heavy as the temperate coastal rain forests north of San Francisco experience. In all, the central coast region is ideal for year round outdoor recreation and this guide provides a good look at the walking opportunities along the coast.
I've done a little more than 20 of the hikes described in this book. Mileage and maps are accurate and driving directions to and from the trailhead are very easy to follow. I personally find the summary of the hikes, found at the beginning of each description, more valuable than the trail descriptions themselves. The latter are a little brief, while natural history and scenic highlights are all found in the former.
For the most part, this is a decent book. But hikers who want strenuous distance treks should look elsewhere. Fully half the hikes in this book are 2 miles or less in distance. Many are nearby or within urban settings. County parks, small nature areas, beaches, and coastal bluffs make up the vast majority of trails in this guide. Those seeking longer hikes would do well to look elsewhere. But if you want to get out and stretch your legs as you drive up the coast, this is a great book to take along. You will find lots of small hidden gems among some of California's nicest coastal counties.
