In 1862 twenty-one-year-old Morris Brown Jr. left his studies at Hamilton College to take up the Union cause. He quickly rose in rank from sergeant major to captain and acting regimental commander for the 126th New York Volunteers. In letters written to his family in Penn Yan, New York, Brown describes his experiences at war: the unseemly carping between fellow officers, the fear that gripped men facing battle, and the longing to return home. Brown’s letters also reveal an ambitious young man who not only wanted recognition but also wanted to assure himself of a financial future. Above all, this is the story of a courageous young man, told mostly in his own words. Few Civil War soldiers were as articulate as Morris Brown Jr., fewer served in a regiment that saw so much combat, still fewer commanded a regiment at such a young age, and even fewer were recognized by the newly minted Medal of Honor.

Morris Brown was one of my husbands relatives.

I have always enjoyed reading stories of the Civil War. My cousin from Cal. told me about the book as his name is Morris Brown Parker 111. His dad was the 11 and the grandfather was the first . The grandfather wrote 2 books after he retired. The first one was Mules, Mines and me in Mexico. The other book was White Oaks which is in New Mexico. He did mining there and many relatives are buried there. We met several when my Husband was alive. Now Brownie (Morris Brown) is writing a book on his time in the Air Force during the Korean War and also Vietnam. I am proof reading it and he is now making changes on some of it as he did finish it but wanted to make it better. Don't know when or if it will be published but I certainly hope it will. All of the relatives have read the above book and have enjoyed it. Brownie now has the sword that belonged to Morris Brown as we had it for several years but when I found out Brownie should have it we made arrangement for him to have it. We could have had the pistol but we were robbed a long time ago and many of the guns that were in the family were stolen. thought you might enjoy reading about his family. Iris Kemp

A Gripping Story

In 1991, Hamilton College acquired a scrapbook of Civil War letters written by former student and Medal of Honor winner Morris Brown, Jr., of Penn Yan, NY. Civil War expert Wayne Mahood, a Hamilton alumnus, turns to these letters to bring Brown’s story to life. Young Morris Brown was patriotic, ambitious for promotion, and immeasurably brave. Proud of his accomplishments at Gettysburg, Brown longed for marriage and a business career after the war. But in May 1864, dug in at Spotsylvania Court House, he wrote that “We are literally living, as it were, in our own graves.” Brown’s letters and Mahood’s narrative give insights into the war, the battles, and the motivations of soldiers that are not attainable from conventional histories.

This guy makes the Civil War come to life!

I loved Wayne Mahood's book. A Medal of Honor recipient's story is well written. It was hard to put down, and a great story about an era that never loses its relevance. I heartily recommend this book for anyone who loves history and loves a good story, you will not be disappointed. I wish I could give it 6 stars.
