Notes from the Underground (Dover Thrift Editions), by Fyodor Dostoyevsky

In 1864, just prior to the years in which he wrote his greatest novels — Crime and Punishment, The Idiot, The Possessed and The Brothers Karamazov — Fyodor Dostoyevsky (1821–1881) penned the darkly fascinating Notes from the Underground. Its nameless hero is a profoundly alienated individual in whose brooding self-analysis there is a search for the true and the good in a world of relative values and few absolutes. Moreover, the novel introduces themes — moral, religious, political and social — that dominated Dostoyevsky's later works. Notes from the Underground, then, aside from its own compelling qualities, offers readers an ideal introduction to the creative imagination, profundity and uncanny psychological penetration of one of the most influential novelists of the nineteenth century. Constance Garnett's authoritative translation is reprinted here, with a new introduction.

A Note on Translations...
By Enamorato
I will not delve into the brilliant work of nascent existentialism that Dostoevsky's "Notes From Underground" represents as there are plenty of reviews who have already done that for me. I do want to help customers in choosing a translation out of the many that are available, as there doesn't seem to be much to guide one through them here.

Perhaps the best translation I've found to date is that by Andrew MacAndrew, available in a Signet Classics edition. MacAndrew's prose has a vigor and modern clarity that truly make this work speak to the reader - the Underground Man truly comes to life as a living, breathing character with a relevance and immediacy.

For all the praise the Pevear/Volokhonsky translations have gotten, I do not think they necessarily surpass the efforts of those who came before them in this particular instance. Although a big fan of their Tolstoy, the Dostoevsky comes off somewhat comparatively muted.

Compare MacAndrew's rendering of the opening words in which the Underground Man introduces himself:

"I'm a sick man... a mean man. There's nothing attractive about me. I think there's something wrong with my liver. But, actually, I don't know a damn thing about my sickness; I'm not even too sure what it is that's ailing me."

To Pevear/Volokhonsky's:
"I am a sick man... I am a wicked man. An unattractive man. I think my liver hurts. However, I don't know a fig about my sickness and am not sure what it is that hurts me."

Of the two, MacAndrew's Underground Man obviously speaks a more contemporary English. I am aware that this has actually been a criticism of his. In fact, many readers might actually be put off by the brusque and terse take or find it even slightly disturbing. Purists will also doubtless find much to annoy them about MacAndrew's more interpretive (as opposed to literal) approach to translation. The Pevear/Volokhonsky actually appeared in 1993, about 30 years after MacAndrew's. There's nothing particularly wrong with their version. It has a stately, nuanced charm and is apparently much truer to Dostoevsky's original in the literal sense (to the point of translating his flaws and idiosyncrasies). But personally, as a reader, I just got much more out of reading the MacAndrew translation. You immediately get a taste of the angst of this character from MacAndrew's terse, flippant diction.

Two others to take note of: The classic Constance Garrett translation can still be found in a cheap Barnes and Noble Classics edition, along with a good selection of Dostoevsky's shorter works. Garnett's haphazard, hasty, and somewhat reckless method of translation has been much criticised, as has her quaintly Victorian diction. Mirra Ginsberg's translation in the Bantam Classics series matches the Pevear/Volokhonsky translation almost word-for-word, although I find the wording where she deviates to actually be better overall.

Story and toughts of a self made social outcast.
By A Customer
A seemingly in-depth look into the life of a depressive recluse. The main character gives us many views on everyday people and their actions that should cause us, the reader, to evaluate our own understanding of the people who surround us. (Example: Why people will moan for days before seeing a dentist.)

The writing is absolutely brilliant. Dostoyevsky does not seem to have created this character but instead pulled him from the street. The character was not one dimensional, an attribute that I found personally refreshing . The thoughts and emotions are complex and real and were constantly understated, adding to the impression that the book was written by the character himself, who lacks writing experience needed to capture these feelings.

The main character views himself cut off and removed from society, rejected by all in nearly every way. He has become so obsessed with this notion that he has created this exact situation as a result of searching for justification of this impression. He has in fact created most of his own misery, and only continues to propagate more. Yet he seem himself as miserable and rejected and finds pride in this image. He imagines himself to be pitiful and also to be strong and fiercely independent as a result of his social isolation. He feels he poses a strength of spirit for being able to endure the loneliness and envisions himself as a martyr.

This fuels his ego and he plans heroic acts in order to show the proof of his worth or to win attention and love. He however lacks the courage to complete the monumental self serving tasks he set before himself. Through a strange twist of logic these failures are also seen as something to be admired. It only makes him more pitiful and thus a greater martyr. When these failures are personally humiliating he retreats within in himself. Hating everyone and again fortifying his independence, claiming that all who depend on others are weak. Only to re-emerge more hungry for the affections of a companion.

An emotional ebbing between pride of independence and ability to bravely endure the suffering quickly switching to the opposite pole of resenting people in general. Sustaining himself on the imagined praises or pity that he thinks would be lavished upon him if he were to be seen by others as he sees himself.

A terribly tragic tale that emphasis the importance of perspective and removing one's self from a problem in order to perhaps gain a helpful assessment of it. The ideas and emotions presented give a haunting impression. The book should be read slowly and turned over in ones mind again and again.

"Which is better - cheap happiness or exalted suffering?"
By M. S. Bowden
`Notes From The Underground' is a formidable work of philosophy and of psychology, not to mention its worth as a novel. In the space of around one hundred pages, Dostoyevsky manages to expound theories on reason, alienation, suffering, and human inaction. The book's importance and influence on generations of writers cannot be over-emphasised; Sartre and Camus are only two examples of people who have been directly influenced by this book.

The book is presented in two parts. Part one `Underground' is written in the form of the nameless narrator's rambling thoughts on reason and his claim that throughout history, human actions have been anything but influenced by reason. Underground Man's charge is that man values most the freedom to choose to act in opposition to reason's dictates. Dostoyevsky's critique of reason then, although it demands attention and is somewhat difficult to follow, sets the philosophical foundations for the rest of the book.

Part two `A Propos of the Wet Snow' is much easier to read, as the narrator recounts three episodes which happened when he was fifteen years younger and working as a civil servant in St. Petersburg. The first considers an incident in which an army officer insults him and goes on to detail Underground Man's subsequent internal anguish at his inability to commit an act of retribution. The second episode takes place at a farewell dinner for an acquaintance named Zverkov. The narrator is utterly disgusted with the company in which he finds himself but despite this, he is unable - even though he desires it - to make them realise this. The third episode details Underground Man's brief, painful and emotional relationship with a prostitute.

Dostoyevsky is refreshing in this book thanks not only to his incredibly powerful prose, but also for the intense but subtle way in which the stories reflect and indeed embody his philosophical theories. This dark and pessimistic portrayal of the nature of man may not sit very comfortably with many readers, however the ideas expressed in `Notes From The Underground' are as relevant and worthy of deliberation now as I am sure they were in 1864.

From the Back Cover
The 126 poems in this superb collection of 19th- and 20th-century British and American verse range from the impassioned "Renascence" of Edna St. Vincent Millay to Edward Lear's whimsical "The Owl and the Pussycat" and James Whitcomb Riley’s homespun "When the Frost Is on the Punkin." Famous poets such as Wordsworth, Tennyson, Whitman, and Frost are well-represented, as are less well-known poets such as John McCrae ("In Flanders Fields") and Ernest Thayer ("Casey at the Bat").

About the Author
Martin Gardner was a renowned author who published over 70 books on subjects from science and math to poetry and religion. He also had a lifelong passion for magic tricks and puzzles. Well known for his mathematical games column in Scientific American and his "Trick of the Month" in Physics Teacher magazine, Gardner attracted a loyal following with his intelligence, wit, and imagination.

Martin Gardner: A Remembrance
The worldwide mathematical community was saddened by the death of Martin Gardner on May 22, 2010. Martin was 95 years old when he died, and had written 70 or 80 books during his long lifetime as an author. Martin's first Dover books were published in 1956 and 1957: Mathematics, Magic and Mystery, one of the first popular books on the intellectual excitement of mathematics to reach a wide audience, and Fads and Fallacies in the Name of Science, certainly one of the first popular books to cast a devastatingly skeptical eye on the claims of pseudoscience and the many guises in which the modern world has given rise to it. Both of these pioneering books are still in print with Dover today along with more than a dozen other titles of Martin's books. They run the gamut from his elementary Codes, Ciphers and Secret Writing, which has been enjoyed by generations of younger readers since the 1980s, to the more demanding The New Ambidextrous Universe: Symmetry and Asymmetry from Mirror Reflections to Superstrings, which Dover published in its final revised form in 2005.

To those of us who have been associated with Dover for a long time, however, Martin was more than an author, albeit a remarkably popular and successful one. As a member of the small group of long-time advisors and consultants, which included NYU's Morris Kline in mathematics, Harvard's I. Bernard Cohen in the history of science, and MIT's J. P. Den Hartog in engineering, Martin's advice and editorial suggestions in the formative 1950s helped to define the Dover publishing program and give it the point of view which — despite many changes, new directions, and the consequences of evolution — continues to be operative today.

In the Author's Own Words:
"Politicians, real-estate agents, used-car salesmen, and advertising copy-writers are expected to stretch facts in self-serving directions, but scientists who falsify their results are regarded by their peers as committing an inexcusable crime. Yet the sad fact is that the history of science swarms with cases of outright fakery and instances of scientists who unconsciously distorted their work by seeing it through lenses of passionately held beliefs."

"A surprising proportion of mathematicians are accomplished musicians. Is it because music and mathematics share patterns that are beautiful?" — Martin Gardner

Doggerel, Rhymes, Lyrics, Verses, and Revered Poetry
By Michael Wischmeyer
Martin Gardner, a noted author, editor and anthologist, compiled this collection of memorable poems by nineteenth and twentieth century American and British poets. This poetry is memorable in the sense that many readers will recognize the poems and may have even memorized some of these verses in their school days. Gardner admits that some entries he cares not a rap about and even considers them doggerel. Others he remembers from childhood and still cherishes.
Gardner's anthology, Best Remembered Poems, does not pretend to be the best poems in the English language, but this collection does make entertaining reading. Some poems once widely popular now seem atrocious. Others still resonate despite the passage of generations. I appreciated Gardner's short and often amusing introduction to each poem. For much of this poetry Gardner has the audacity to provide humorous parodies. This is obviously poetry to have fun with, not poetry to be intimidated by.
You may be familiar with similar anthologies. How does this collection of 123 poems compare with other collections that claim to be the 100 best loved poems, the 100 best poems, and the 101 most famous poems?
The little Dover edition, 100 Best-Loved Poems (edited by Philip Smith), overlaps significantly with Gardner's anthology. They share 39 poems. Phillip Smith offers more poetry from Shakespeare, Donne, Jonson, Milton, Marvell, Hardy, Hopkins, Housman, Yeats, and other famous poets.
In his introduction Gardner pokes fun at the most successful of all anthologies, One Hundred and One Famous Poems (compiled by Roy J. Cook, 1929), for its high proportion of outdated and discarded poets. And yet, Gardner also shares 39 poems with Cook's collection, suggesting more affinity than Gardner might have recognized.
The third comparison is with 100 Poems by 100 Poets, the finest poetry in the English language, so say its three authors: Harold Pinter, Geoffrey Godbert, and Anthony Astbury. The overlap with this more scholarly collection is hardly noticeable as only five poems are shared.
Gardner's collection includes the rather lengthy poem Thanatopsis, a favorite of high school literature classes in the early decades of the twentieth century. Unexpectedly, a few years ago as my wife's mother lay dying of cancer, she quoted the second half of Thanatopsis in full and without any errors. She had remembered this poem for more than sixty years.

Echoes and Memories
By P. Russ
Open the book to any page, and you will read phrases you've heard all your life but never knew, or now can't remember, from where they came. It's a great English language poetry course in a single volume. The only book in it's class is "The Top 100 Poems" (which costs 5 times as much).

Lots of Wonderful Poetry
By Judith Miller
This is an enjoyable grouping of over 100 poems. There are many that most of us will remember but a few that I had never read before. Some of these poems are the very ones that were read to us as children: "THE OWL AND THE PUSSYCAT," "THE DUEL," and "LITTLE ORPHANT ANNIE." Reading these old favorites again brings back memories of my sister, Joan who always had time to read to me.
I also enjoyed encountering a few of the poems that my teachers made me study: "THE LOST CHORD," which was turned into a hymn and often song by Enrico Caruso; the very inspiring "INVICTUS," and the sad but lyrical "ANNABEL LEE." It's rather amazing how much more meaning you can take from the poems when you read them as an adult.
There are also very interesting short biographies of each author and these are not the versions that we learned in school. They make the poets seem real and not quite so lofty. Unfortunately, many people never learn to appreciate poetry, but I think that perhaps they may not have realized that the key to poetry is their own imagination.

Amaze Us, O God! CHAPTER ONE

Amazing Heritage
The life we start with comes from others but the life we live is molded by our own hands. God is a remarkable sculptor—He wants to help you.

Allow Him to remove your sharp edges and excess burdens by asking Him to “Amaze Us, O God!”

—MARK HANBY

Over thirty years ago, Alex Haley wrote the best seller Roots, tracing the ancestral struggle of his family from Africa to America. In so doing, he reintroduced an entire generation to the plight of slavery and perhaps as an unintended consequence, stirred many thousands from all races to search out their own genealogical histories. We each have a spiritual genealogy that is every bit as interesting and formative as our natural lineage.

Life itself is amazing and provides remarkable material for each one of us to tell our unique chapter of His-story. Those who came before us, for better or worse, have left us with the foundation upon which our lives are built. Regardless of whether or not we value or appreciate the particular groundwork that was laid for us by others, our life is the result of how we have built upon that foundation.

You’ve heard the expression “He was born with a silver spoon in his mouth,” meaning someone was given many material advantages. Well, maybe you realize, as I do, that far more than material blessings, the greatest advantage any of us can have are ancestors, and parents in particular, who instill in us a thirst for God and the miraculous. But even if they did not, through our roots we can trace amazing events, whether we perceive them to be good or bad, that have the potential to unlock understanding in our lives.

We have a divine heritage given by God. We also have a heritage that comes from our ancestors. A heritage is literally the things that we inherit from our ancestors. This heritage is composed less of material things and more of the experiences, culture, values, and especially the faith that we inherit from those who have gone before us.
Intrigued by the Power and Inspiration of the Miraculous
I grew up in a family that believed in a God who was near. He was a God who was willing, and indeed even eager, to participate in our lives in a very present and active way. My parents had no problem believing in and receiving the miraculous.

I was just a young boy when I started hearing incredible stories and seeing irrefutable miraculous occurrences. These events caused me to ask questions and search for answers. I would ask myself questions like “Why do supernatural events occur at one place or time and not in another?” “Do these things just happen, or are they released by something we do or by some understanding we have?” “Are there keys to understanding and utilizing the amazing power of God that, if we understood them, would give us continual access between the natural and spiritual worlds?”

I was just a young boy when I started seeing irrefutable miraculous occurrences.

At a very young age I began learning about the amazing workings of the Spirit from stories my parents told me from firsthand accounts of miraculous testimonies and from my own personal witness. As a young boy I remember sitting in small clap-siding churches, in our farmhouse and neighborhood houses, and around smoky campfires and seeing God touch people in unbelievable ways. The following event is as clear to me now as it was the day I first witnessed it . . .

I watched my aunt Ruth closely as she scurried around my grandmother’s kitchen helping finish preparations for Thanksgiving dinner. She was a phenomenal cook and was always chipper and happy. Her back was as straight as an arrow, and her gait strong and aggressive.

My mother and grandmother took turns shooing me into the other room. We had come for a visit, and my curiosity about the things I had heard compelled me to seek further evidence. There were lots of cousins to play with whom I hadn’t seen in a while, but I was determined to see if Aunt Ruth limped when no one was watching.

The family story had been told over and over again about how Ruth, my daddy’s sister, had been in a terrible buggy accident when she was fifteen years old. The horses became spooked by a thrashing machine and ran away, dragging her helpless body hundreds of yards under the overturned buggy as it scraped and bounced against the stony ground.

My grandfather Benjamin Hanby would often tearfully describe how his daughter’s body was grossly twisted and her back terribly deformed. So serious was her accident that her right leg withered to the point that only the ball of her foot could reach the floor.

In a grotesque fashion, she would limp along as she did her daily chores. The incessant pain from that accident remained with her as she took care of my ailing grandmother and two younger brothers, one of whom would one day become my father.

On top of my aunt’s accident, Grandma had been sent home from the hospital with six months to live after having two-thirds of her stomach removed because of chronic bleeding ulcers. With few material resources, the family was struggling and leaned heavily on their neighbors and the church community of the little Methodist church in Bruno, Ohio, where my grandfather was a steward.

This comfort was short-lived, however, because the family was asked to leave the church due to Ruth’s “activities” during the worship services. In this case at least, the adage “trouble comes in threes” seems to have held true.

It was not that the church was being intentionally hurtful or inconsiderate; they just didn’t understand what was happening—nor did my relatives, for that matter. My grandparents held no animosity over their removal, for they knew how fear and lack of understanding can cause people to do things they later regret.

It happened mostly when the congregation sang, and always when they sang “Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me.” Ruth would fall out of her pew and begin babbling in a rather incoherent language. Everyone blamed the accident, and some diagnosed her as having epilepsy.

Often the amazing power of God tests our understanding and our will to adjust to the voice of God. Aunt Ruth, however, vowed that during those “spells” her body would become pain-free. No one really understood what was happening, but the entire family continued to pray for my grandmother and Ruth and to trust God.

It was during those lonely days that my grandfather’s brother, Great-uncle Clint, rode up to the old farmhouse and announced that a makeshift shelter called a brush arbor had been set up in his front yard. A traveling minister had come to the area and was preaching that Jesus was still healing sick folks and filling them with His Spirit—“just like in the Bible.” Then he added, “And I think we know what’s wrong with Ruth!”

My desperate grandfather loaded the whole family, including my dying grandmother, into a wagon and drove the team of horses seventeen miles over the rutted dusty road to Uncle Clint’s farm. There was a real excitement and anticipation from what they had been told.

They lifted Ruth out of the wagon, and when her feet touched the ground, her back instantly became straight and her right leg lengthened and became normal. She immediately had one of her “spells,” which witnesses claimed to be the baptism of the Holy Ghost!

When her feet touched the ground, her back instantly became straight and her right leg lengthened and became normal.

My grandmother was also instantly healed and lived for another sixty-two years—she was ninety-nine when she died. These amazing miracles introduced our family to the wonderful world of the supernatural.

Now, forty-five years later, I kept sneaking into the kitchen with an eye on Aunt Ruth because I wanted to make sure it was real, and it was: she never limped or had pain from her accident since the day she was healed at that meeting on my great-uncle Clint’s farm.
You Have to Be Willing to Look if You Want to See
And by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people.—Acts 5:12

God is a God of signs and wonders. In fact, many of the things He does fit under one of these two areas. Though many do not see because they no longer look, God is always speaking through an abundance of signs and wonders.

Signs are God’s pointing device. Like a road sign pointing out the direction to a destination or providing information about the trip, so are God’s signs. They give us information about how to connect to God and His manifold blessings.

God’s wonders cause us to wonder. Some miraculous event occurs or some, as yet unclear, occurrence takes place, and we wonder what it means. Like the Virgin Mary when the angel pronounced, “Hail, thou that art highly favored, the Lord is with thee” (Luke 1:28), this miraculous occurrence caused Mary to wonder what all this meant.

God did great, notable miracles for my aunt and grandmother, but His purpose was not just to heal them but also to give direction to their lives and understanding to their purpose, and to set in motion an order of events that was to affect the entire family and the life of those, like myself, yet unborn.
Questions Often Provide Keys to Portals
God not only did these things for my relatives but wants to do similar things for you as well. He is in the business of blessing you with the intent that you may know Him and gain understanding of who He is and how He acts. I asked myself, Why did this happen at my uncle’s house and not at my grandparents’ farm? Why were they healed when they touched the ground? Why at that time and in that place?

This miraculous incident got me wondering about how and why and in what manner the God of the universe interacts with His creation. Is it possible that there are spiritual keys that, if understood, would unlock the amazing power of God for each of us? I believe there are. But before we proceed to look at those, let’s talk for a moment about the nature of signs and wonders.

This miraculous incident got me wondering about how the God of the universe interacts with His creation.

Insights into Spiritual Portals: Signs and Wonders

Most of us, from time to time, look for signs. We want some external indication or confirmation of what we are to do, or that we are on track with some aspect of life. In and of itself there is nothing wrong with this as long as our ultimate goal is not the sign itself. If the sign becomes our ultimate goal, then we become lost in the sign and lose sight of what it was meant to confirm or what instruction it was to provide. We are not meant to live our life as sign-seekers. To do this is contrary to spirituality, and people who engage in sign-seeking open themselves up to the bondage of doubt and fear.

I once knew a married couple who would do nothing unless they saw a sign. If, for example, they thought they should take a trip to Kentucky, they would not go until the name of the state was given to them at least three times. It might be by hearing Kentucky on the radio or having someone mention the name to them in casual conversation. Their ability to hear the voice of God became lost in their reliance upon signs. Their entire life became dependent upon discovering some sign, and this fostered great fear and doubt in understanding or sensing God absent of signs, many of which were fabrications of their own mind. They of course are not alone in this. In fact many religions use external evidences of perceived blessing, financial success, number of members, notoriety, or social influence as signs that they are in the will of God. Sign-seekers will always find some sign, imagined or otherwise, that will support their desired results. But if we seek God above signs, we will have signs that bring confirmation and witness of God.
A Sign from God or a Sign of God?
Many, as in the example above, look for signs from God. “I want a sign to know if I should take a job,” or “I want a sign to know if I should marry this person.” There is nothing wrong in desiring confirmation from God about important decisions in our lives. We can think of most miraculous signs, however, not so much as signs from God as signs of God. By that I mean that they reveal some aspect of God that should make us wonder and desire Him as opposed to being merely excited about something we’ve experienced. God is always manifesting Himself in our world to those who are able to see that these manifestations are signs of His love, His nature, His intention, His wisdom, and so forth—in short, signs of God. They give us instruction as to who and what He is and attest to or confirm His presence in our lives.

Jesus in Matthew 16:4 said, “A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign.” Literally, they seek one sign upon another. Yet God does provide many signs throughout Scripture, as in Mark 16:20, where it states, “And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following.”

God will confirm Himself and His word to each of us with signs.

In the story of my ancestors, the portal to their need was also a sign and a confirmation of God’s word. My aunt and grandmother were not seeking a sign. They believed in God and had great physical needs. My Aunt Ruth’s episodes in church and her and my grandmother’s instant healing upon touching the ground on my uncle Clint’s farm were signs of God’s presence and confirmation of God’s activity in their day.

Often things happen to us that we don’t instantly understand. This is where wonder comes in. We need to see our lives in relation to God’s purpose for us. Events that happen to us should spur us into contemplating God’s love for us. My aunt and grandmother suffered some very difficult trials, but the end result was that God delivered them. This was not only a sign to them of His love and power but to the entire family and to myself, who was yet unborn at the time of these events. Having confidence in God through difficult circumstances will open for you a portal of deliverance as it did for them. They could have refused to get into the wagon. They could have said, “We’ve prayed enough, and we never get an answer.” Yet regardless of their circumstances, they stayed true to what they knew of God. They were not seeking a sign and would have stayed true to their belief regardless of whether or not they were healed, but their belief and the timing of God’s purpose did open an amazing portal for them, and it can for you as well.

Having confidence in God through difficult circumstances will open for you a portal of deliverance.

Personal Application

If God’s desire is to amaze you so that you may gain knowledge of Him and grow in relationship, then you and not He must make the adjustment to encourage these things to happen. A few simple thoughts provided at the end of each chapter can open you to the amazement of God.

At one time I remember thinking, I’d like to return to that place in central Ohio where these and many other mighty things took place. Maybe there was something about that place. Don’t we all at times desire to relive especially happy or significant moments?

This thought was not unlike those of the woman at the well in the Gospel of John who had an encounter with Jesus that changed her life. She also was wondering about the place where God could be found. Jesus, in essence, said that it is not in a physical location but from a spiritual position that God can be accessed.

Think about a significant occurrence from the life of your parents or one of your ancestors. Recount it as fully as possible with as much detail as you can. Then ask yourself some questions:

Why did this happen to them?

How did they deal with the event and its aftermath?

In what ways did this event change them?

In what ways did this event eventually influence your life, even if you were not alive when it took place?

How was God in the event?

Then pray this simple four-word prayer: Amaze me, O God.

It is hard to know where you are going if you don’t understand where you’ve come from. In your past you possess significant insights for your future. Amazing things happen when you ask to see the hand of God in everything, even the smallest things.

Amaze us, O God, by the power of heritage!

Aligning yourself to experience the miraculous!!
By Ronald D Adams
I am a pastor who has been in the ministry for 30 years and have been privileged to know Dr. Mark Hanby for the last 15 years. In this time I have read all of his previous works and although I have found all of his other books to be both inspirational and foundational, I must admit that this latest book "Amaze Us Oh God" may be the best that he has written.

In "Amaze Us Oh God", Dr. Hanby bases each chapter on an amazing and miraculous event that has occurred in his 50+ years of ministry. With each of these miraculous events, Dr. Hanby emphasizes our need to be sensitive to the spirit of God, that we may align ourselves to the portals or windows of Heaven. If you will prayerfully read this book, you will find yourself not only hoping to experience the miraculous in your life, but you will come to expect the miraculous in your life.

Having known Dr. Hanby for several years, I had heard of some of the miraculous events that he so beautifully describes in the book. However, as I read each chapter, I found myself both inspired and challenged. Inspired by the witness brought about by each miraculous event, and challenged to grow my faith beyond the mundane level of low expectations to a higher level of alignment and expectancy of the supernatural of God!

If you want to grow your faith, be greatly inspired and wish to seek a closer alignment of your will to the will of God, then you need this book. Then you, like myself, will read this book and find yourself praying the prayer, "Amaze us oh God"!!

The book is very well written. It's a wonderful philosophical guidebook or tool for recognizing what they call `God moments.' It cites many breathtaking miracles--not just what happened, but also what it meant in the larger scope of God's purpose in history.

All twelve portals include:
* Amazing miraculous examples;

The Birth of the Republic, 1763-89, Fourth Edition (The Chicago History of American Civilization), by Edmund S. Morgan

In The Birth of the Republic, 1763–89, Edmund S. Morgan shows how the challenge of British taxation started Americans on a search for constitutional principles to protect their freedom, and eventually led to the Revolution. By demonstrating that the founding fathers’ political philosophy was not grounded in theory, but rather grew out of their own immediate needs, Morgan paints a vivid portrait of how the founders’ own experiences shaped their passionate convictions, and these in turn were incorporated into the Constitution and other governmental documents. The Birth of the Republic is the classic account of the beginnings of the American government, and in this fourth edition the original text is supplemented with a new foreword by Joseph J. Ellis and a historiographic essay by Rosemarie Zagarri.

Review
“No better brief chronological introduction to the period can be found than Edmund S. Morgan’s The Birth of the Republic: 1763–89.”
(Wilson Quarterly)

“The author concisely and clearly covers the major topics, and he offers a well-organized and attractively written survey. . . . The Birth of the Republic is particularly to be praised because of the sensible and judicious views offered by Morgan. He is unfair neither to Britain nor to the colonies.”
(American Historical Review)

“Apart from its uplifting argument, part of the appeal of The Birth of the Republic is its prose style, which is blissfully bereft of academic jargon, sophisticated but simple in a way that scholarly specialists find impressive and ordinary readers find comprehensible. Morgan makes the story he is telling take precedence over the note cards he has assembled. He regards narrative as the highest form of analysis, and he has a natural gift for telling a story, silently digesting mountains of historical evidence to produce the distilled essence of the issue at stake.”
(Joseph J. Ellis, from the foreword)

The best, most readable intro to the Revolution
By Robert James
Edmund Morgan remains America's most readable colonial historian after a half-century of writing. This short volume is still my favorite book about the American Revolution. Written in clear, readable prose that anyone with half-a-brain could understand and enjoy, "The Birth of the Republic" covers all the major bases from 1763 to the Constitutional Convention in 1789. Primarily a political history, readers seeking for a military history should look elsewhere. But for almost fifty years, this book has remained in print, luring readers into a deeper appreciation of our most important piece of history: when the American colonies began to separate themselves from the British Empire, deciding that one's political liberties were more sacred than loyalty to a crown. While in retrospect we can now see that there was little tyranny actually being practiced against the colonies, the fear itself of what dangerous precedent might bring remains with us today. A truly marvelous book, both for a general audience and for those with historical awareness. I first read this book as a student; now, as a history teacher, I give it to my own students with the greatest of anticipated joy: that they too will find this short book as wonderful as any they have ever read.

The basic facts of the American Revolution explained
By Daniel Jolley
Originally published in 1956 and revised in 1977, this book is probably familiar to a couple of generations of college students. This may well be the most accessible overview of the formative history of America. As an overview, of course, it does not go into great detail about the myriad of topics debated by historians still today, but it does hit most of the predominant features of the Revolutionary story. Morgan builds his work around the premise that the Founding Fathers did indeed operate on principle in building a new nation and that the struggle eventually framed itself as a pursuit of equality among all men. He admits that many of the decisions made by the leaders of the Revolution did equate to economic or property gains for themselves, but he argues that this is not contradictory at all with a commitment to liberty because liberty in the 18th century essentially hinged on land ownership. He also rationalizes the contradiction of slavery's continued existence being incorporated into the Constitution by arguing that the convention delegates acted out of urgent concern for the future of a government in its death throes at the hands of a powerless Congress as set up by the Articles of Confederation--without such compromise, the important new Constitution could not have been ratified by a sufficient number of states before the young nation collapsed at the feet of the British and Spanish.
Morgan first examines the increasingly rocky relationship between the English Parliament and the colonies--specifically, the debate over taxation and infringement of liberties that led up to the declaration of independence. He devotes a few pages to the war but does not delve very deeply into military matters. Morgan does an excellent job explaining why the Articles of Confederation failed and how the problems of that system were widely recognized, frankly debated, and resolved in the creation of a new national government established upon the bedrock of a new federal Constitution.
Aside from Morgan's excellent treatment of the birth of the American republic, this book also features the texts of the Declaration of Independence, Articles of Confederation, and federal Constitution; a timeline of important events; and a pretty expansive discussion of source materials published before 1977. In sum, this book is ideal for anyone just wanting to learn or review the pivotal events surrounding the creation of the United States without having to sift through scholarly criticisms and debates of important yet secondary aspects of the story.

The Birth of the Republic
By A Customer
Morgan's book, The Birth of the Republic, is a well-written book of a very interesting time in American History. His book uses great detail to describe this unrevealed part of history. Morgan does not just describe what was going on in these times but he tells why these events occurred. We get not only the story, but also the meaning behind the story. Through the use of Morgan's words and my own imagination I now have the understanding of why "Revolution" occurred.
Morgans book taught us about the times of the revolutionary period in American history. Morgan discussed the taxation and legislation from Parliament and the Americans loyalty to them. Morgan's book shows the challenge of British taxation and why the Americans fought to protect their freedom. He discussed the constitution and to what degree it controlled and helped heal the American society. The book illustrated a division of Americans, turning against each other and becoming an unconstrained nation to fight for the rights of individuals.
I enjoyed Morgan's book because he described the thought and reasoning of the Americans better than I had ever perceived. He used thought rather than facts to discuss the why of the revolutionary period. He supported his why with the reality of what had occurred. Morgan used great judgment in concluding what this period of American history represented. He used clearly cut issues to put meaning behind the acts of the people of this time.
Morgan only had a few flaws in my opinion. He reflected back too much on some of the past experiences. He used too many references that related to what was happening. Morgan also tended to repeat himself in making many points. All of this was not necessary in order to get his point across.
This book presents the American Revolution as a great conflict, not just of men or nations, but of ideas. It tells, not just about the battles, but about the reasons behind the battles. Morgan has done a wonderful job explaining and teaching this part of history. Anyone using this book will get a great understanding of what the American Revolution was about, and why the constitutional principles are so powerful.
