Constantine the Emperor, by David Potter

No Roman emperor had a greater impact on the modern world than did Constantine. The reason is not simply that he converted to Christianity, but that he did so in a way that brought his subjects along after him. Indeed, this major new biography argues that Constantine's conversion is but one feature of a unique administrative style that enabled him to take control of an empire beset by internal rebellions and external threats by Persians and Goths. The vast record of Constantine's administration reveals a government careful in its exercise of power but capable of ruthless, even savage, actions. Constantine executed (or drove to suicide) his father-in-law, two brothers-in-law, his eldest son, and his once beloved wife. An unparalleled general throughout his life, planning a major assault on the Sassanian Empire in Persia even on his deathbed. Alongside the visionary who believed that his success came from the direct intervention of his God resided an aggressive warrior, a sometimes cruel partner, and an immensely shrewd ruler. These characteristics combined together in a long and remarkable career, which restored the Roman Empire to its former glory.

Beginning with his first biographer Eusebius, Constantine's image has been subject to distortion. More recent revisions include John Carroll's view of him as the intellectual ancestor of the Holocaust (Constantine's Sword) and Dan Brown's presentation of him as the man who oversaw the reshaping of Christian history (The Da Vinci Code). In Constantine the Emperor, David Potter confronts each of these skewed and partial accounts to provide the most comprehensive, authoritative, and readable account of Constantine's extraordinary life.

More for a specialist than general audience.
By Randy Stafford
For an emperor so late in the saga of the Roman Empire, Constantine gets a surprising amount of attention and is up there with the early Julio-Claudian emperors in inhabiting, in however misunderstood, inaccurate, and mutated form, a place in the minds of the putatively educated western public. They know he saw a vision of the cross floating in the sky, heard the words "Conquer, in my name", and went on to win a major battle and converted to Christianity as the result. And Potter's claim that he is father of the imperial Roman utterance most widely known, the Nicene Creed, is certainly true.

Of course, Constantine is most simply known as the man who officially made the Roman Empire Christian, and, given that he moved the imperial capital to the newly consecrated Constantinople, it's fitting many histories of Rome end with his death though the western part of the empire limped on for another 137 years and the last vestiges died in the east in 1453.

I'm of two minds about this book.

Potter tries really hard to make this book user friendly. There is a map of the empire with all the post-Diocletian political sub-divisions noted if not any cities. There are some informative pictures of archaeological ruins and recreations. There is a time line that starts with the capture of the Roman emperor Valerian by the Persians in 260 and emperor Julian's death in 363. There is a dramatis personae which you will appreciate when trying to keep Constantius, Constantine, Constantia, and Constantus straight or multiple church men named Donatus or Eusebius. Though the book has no index, Potter makes his chapters so short and specifically titled that you can usually find what you are looking for by searching chapter titles. The price of organizing chapters that way is that sometimes Potter deviates from a strictly chronological account.

There is a concluding appendix called "Finding Constantine" and that gives a clue to what makes this book somewhat problematical for the casual reader. Potter is interested in correcting some mischaracterizations of Constantine and his reign from the founder of Christianity's long anti-Semitic streak as John Carroll argues in Constantine's Sword: The Church and the Jews, A History, the suppresser of Christian truths as in Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code, or the low-born, usurping bastard who killed his wife Fausta and son Crispus and converted to Christianity in Eusebius of Caesarea's very influential Life of Constantine (Clarendon Ancient History Series) - the main source of the cross in the sky story.

Potter is having none of that. He places Constantine's proclamations on the Jews in context to show their vicious rhetoric was somewhat stock and matched by things he said about other Christians, typical of a Roman magistrate of the time, and, most importantly, not backed up by large-scale persecution of Jews (except when they pursued circumcision of converts). Whereas Brown sees a sinister corruption of Christianity with paganism to water down the truth, Potter sees Constantine learning from his successor Diocletian's politically destabilizing and futile persecution of Christians. And, as for Eusebius' cross in the sky, Potter is having none of it.

In fact, given the relative brevity of the book and wealth of footnotes, this book, in the end, seems intended more for an audience keyed into the many disputes and mysteries of Constantine than casual students of Roman history. Our sources from the period are not that good. There are histories written long after the fact, some judicial codes from the time, and the somewhat useful accounts of Eusebius - who knew Constantine - and Constantine's tutor Lactantius. We are unsure of the dates of some of Constantine's military campaigns or when, how, and why Fausta died or why Crispus was executed.

A lay reader could almost get a sense of Constantine the man - his temper, his shortcomings, his ambition, his genuine desire to do justice of a sort for his subjects, his religious conviction - by reading that appendix or the epilogue chapter which sums up the man and the differing interpretations of him through history.

However, I did find some things of value in the rest of the book, in particular the influence, for good and bad, of Diocletian's example on Constantine, to see the importance of loyalty in his personal relationships - learned from a father who did not forsake the product of an earlier, less socially connected marriage, and the sense of political turmoil and oppression dimly glimpsed through repeated judicial edicts trying to curb the power of the rich in legal proceedings, and Constantine's insistence the classes remain separate - particularly in regards to the forbidden marriage of the free to slaves or children sold into slavery.

So, not an easy read but there are a few nuggets here for the non-specialist, and I suspect, if you are a specialist, Potter probably argues a good case.

Constantine as Emperor First, Christian Second
By Ken Burton
If you are looking for exciting historical fiction based on the life of Constantine, this book is NOT what you want, but if well-written, heavily documented professional history is your taste, this is it. This biography sticks closely to the available primary sources, which are of course much limited by the passage of time. Secondary sources are sometimes used to fill gaps, but only when they are consistent with the primary sources and with the broad-brush view of Constantine that Potter develops. The Emperor is presented as a highly competent warrior-administrator who values greatly his faith in the "Christian God," but remains understanding and supportive of those whose religion continues to center on traditional pagan polytheism so long as they honest lives grounded in integrity, hard work, and loyalty to the Emperor. Potter's is clean and easy to follow, and the book is complete with a Time Line,a Dramatis Personnae and an index to supplement the narrative.

The Best Biography of Constantine Available
By Arch Stanton
This book is the best biography I've seen on Constantine. Such a famous emperor is bound to get many biographies but unlike many other famous figures there has yet to be a penultimate book on him. Most books on the man miss the point of the man to one degree or another. Many bios (such as Constantine: Unconquered Emperor, Christian Victor, and Constantine's Sword) focus on what he's best known for today (ie. converting the empire to Christianity). Others (like The Life and Times of Constantine the Great) offer brief adventure novel-ish accounts of his reign. Others (such as Constantine the Great: The Man and His Times and The Roman Revolution of Constantine) have the same goal as this one and attempt to portray the man as he was, with varying degrees of success. But I don't think that any of them come as close to the heart of the man as this one.

Potter's approach when considering motivation and intent is to examine the evidence written the closest to the time in question. He places a lot of focus on Constantine's laws and rescripts since these were written during Constantine's life. Most of the ecclesiastical and historical sources were written well after his death. All of them had a bone to grind of one sort or another. The ecclesiastical historians were keen to prove that Constantine was the devout and persecutory emperor that they wanted while the pagan ones wanted to show how bad Constantine was for the empire.

This gives Potter a rather different perspective than most biographies on the man. His Constantine is an emperor first and a Christian second, and often a distant second. Most of his ethics were conservative Roman more than Christian and he cited examples of previous emperors more than he did Biblical figures. This comes through in his concern for protecting the lower classes (never an exclusively Christian concern) and his harsh attitudes towards slaves. His Constantine is a deeply devout man who was convinced he had a god on his side, but who is never the less a Roman through and through. His religious policy (which most ecclesiastical historians consider confused) was actually as simple as could be: he wanted everybody to get along and serve him. Christians who rocked the boat were treated just as harshly as radical pagans.

As to this book's problems there are quite a few. It is probably not the best beginners book on the man. For that I'd recommend Grant's or Kousoulas' books. This book seems to assume a basic knowledge of the events described. For example, the description of the battle of the Milvian Bridge is minimal and it seems to be a rather unimportant event judging from the focus given to it. He seems more interested in what others say about the fight than the battle itself. His focus on Constantine is often vague. You understand what was happening around him, but often not what it would have meant to the man. The first part of the book is better understood as a dual biography of Constantine and Diocletian while the rest of the book seems more a book about important trends during Constantine's reign than a proper biography per se. Far too often he deals with this by ending the chapter on an out of the blue comment about what Constantine was thinking at that moment in time. He has some good insights to Constantine's personality but he seems uncertain how to incorporate that within his traditional historical structure.

Potter also displays an unfortunate tendency to be easily sidetracked. This is a consistent feature of the book but the most random sections have to do with the making of eunuchs and the local tax situation of Oxyrhynchos. These come out of the blue and have nothing to do with anything else that he is discussing. These sections are (I gather) there to give a feel for the world that he lived in but they are often distracting and rather clumsy. I do have to wonder if some of these were thrown in as space-takers to bring the book up to an amusing total of 306 pages, thus matching the year Constantine became emperor. I see a lot of reviewers blasting these (and they are annoying) but they're usually short and obvious and so don't completely sidetrack your ability to follow the book.

These are some pretty serious problems but they aren't enough to damage my appreciation for the book. It analyzes how Constantine perceived of his duties in the context of the situation within his lifetime rather than the situation that later writers wanted to believe. This alone is enough to make me forgive a lot. Then too the book is usually an easy read when it doesn't go off on sidenotes and it is helped in this by having short chapters. I wouldn't recommend this as anybody's first book on Constantine, but it's an excellent one to read if you want to understand the way that Constantine was understood in his own time. If it isn't the penultimate biography that I've been waiting for then it's at least a valid attempt. Well done.

1794. In the wake of the Glorious First of June, an equivocal success for the British naval fleet against the French Revolutionary forces, Lieutenant John Pearce has pressing matters to attend to. He must undertake an urgent commission from Lord Hood, track down Midshipman Toby Burns, and placate Emily Barclay who, estranged from her husband, is now under Pearce's protection. Meanwhile, smugglers whose ship Pearce inadvertently stole are on his tail, determined to get their money or kill him in revenge - possibly both. And it is not only John Pearce who has his fair share of trouble. The triumphant Channel Fleet returns, with Ralph Barclay limping from a musket ball in the thigh, Cornelius Gherson fuming at the jokes about his cowardice, and bully-boy Devenow sporting a wounded shoulder and a cauliflower ear. But the battle is already the subject of controversy - both the French and British claim victory, and Barclay is accused of holding back from the action. Pearce turns the tables on his enemies with the aid of his crew, conjures up a trick to free his friends and sets off for the Mediterranean with Emily Barclay. He must fight a ferocious sea battle on the way to aid an old friend, and can only hope that his troubles will end along with his mission. But are they only just beginning?

If you love soap operas
By Amazon Customer
I'm in the middle of book nine in the series. The premise is pretty good and would have made a really good tale. But, this is a tale that seems to never end. Each book is just a continuation of the last one. Typically books in series, such as this, will have a story in each book with a beginning, a middle and a conclusion, with a story arc being carried on over the series. Not so here. The problems that our hero John Pearce encountered in the first book have not been resolved at all over the nine following. In fact, twists and turns to the tale are added along the way with none of the new problems being resolved. I think it's time to wind this series down and come to some conclusion. Maybe by book 25 the way it's going. At that time maybe our friend John will get to marry his sweetheart, he can resolve the Pelican problems and decide what he want to do with his own future. Who knows.

I would recommend that anyone reading the John Pierce series, start at the beginning and read in order. It is a great series. I can't wait for the next one in David Donachie's series.

Reading this writer is a chore.
By J. Burke
I love stories of the sea, especially those set in the days of sail; but this book is too difficult to read. If C. S. Forester and Patrick O'Brien have set the standard (which I believe they have), then this falls far below it. The author seems to be afraid to end a sentence. Reminds me of some of the tougher sledding in Moby Dick. I gave it up after a half hour. The writing should get out of the way and let the story come through. Here the writing is an impediment. This might be a great yarn, but I'll never know.

Peeking at Peak Oil, by Kjell Aleklett

The term “Peak Oil” was born in January 2001 when Colin Campbell formed the Association for the Study of Peak Oil & Gas (ASPO). Now, Peak Oil is used thousands of times a  day by journalists, politicians, industry leaders, economists, scientists and countless others around the globe. Peak Oil is not the end of oil but it tells us the end is in sight. Anyone interested in food production, economic growth, climate change or global security needs to understand this new reality.

In Peeking at Peak Oil Professor Kjell Aleklett, President of ASPO International and head of the world’s leading research group on Peak Oil, describes the decade-long journey of Peak Oil from extremist fringe theory to today’s accepted fact: Global oil production is entering terminal decline. He explains everything you need to know about Peak Oil and its world-changing consequences from an insider’s perspective. In simple steps, Kjell tells us how oil is formed, discovered and produced. He uses science to reveal the errors and deceit of national and international oil authorities, companies and governments  too terrified to admit the truth. He describes his personal involvement in the intrigues of the past decade.

What happens when a handful of giant oil fields containing two thirds of our planet’s oil become depleted? Will major oil consumers such as the EU and US face rationing within a decade? Will oil producing nations conserve their own oil when they realize that no one can export oil to them in the future? Does Peak Oil mean Peak Economic Growth? If you want to know the real story about energy today and what the future has in store, then you need to be “Peeking at Peak Oil”.

Review

From the reviews:

“In his book, Peeking at Peak Oil physicist Kjell Aleklett explores the science and consequences behind the sobering reality that the world’s oil production is entering terminal decline with no satisfactory alternatives. … Using simple language and engaging illustrations, Aleklett’s Peeking at Peak Oil leaves readers with a clear and comprehensive understanding of the emerging issue of our time.” (Sustainable Guernsey, June, 2012)

“It is…refreshing to find a comprehensive, peak oil analysis that relies on rigorous scientific methods and empirical data rather than resorting to anecdotes, doomsday prophesies and red herrings….this book should be required reading for anyone seriously interested in the future world energy market and economy, especially politicians and policymakers….Aleklett’s analysis is meticulous, his results are convincing, and the implications are sobering….The book also contains a wealth of information and can serve as a basic primer on global oil industry….This book has enough to interest both novices and oil industry veterans.” (Roger H. Bezdek, World Oil, April 2012)

“In the book, Peeking at Peak Oil, that is released today in Uppsala, Aleklett summarises very thoroughly his ten years of work studying and trying to view the entirety of our oil-supply situation….In the book’s rich collection of tables and figures Aleklett shows how companies, nations and even international energy organisations such as the OECD-based IEA have – intentionally or otherwise - made erroneous assessments.” (Kersti Kollberg, Energy Bulletin, 11 June 2012, http://energybulletin.net/stories/2012-06-12/oil-and-future-thorough-work)

“The book factually shows that although fossil fuel consumption in industrial countries has somewhat leveled off, the demand for it in the rest of the world, China and India in particular, is rapidly rising. … the author discusses growing concerns within the governments of exporting and importing countries as well as giant oil companies. … A must read for those interested in energy and its future. Summing Up: Highly recommended. All levels/libraries.” (J. Tavakoli, Choice, Vol. 50 (6), February, 2013)

Kjell Aleklett is Professor of Physics at Uppsala University in Sweden where he leads the Uppsala Global Energy Systems Group (UGES). He holds a doctorate in nuclear physics from the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, and worked as a postdoctoral fellow and staff scientist from 1977 to 1985 at the Natural Science Laboratory at Studsvik, Sweden. In 1978-9 and again in 1983, he was invited to work with Nobel Prize winner Glenn T. Seaborg at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory of the University of California, Berkeley, USA. His collaboration with Seaborg spanned twenty years. He was appointed as an associate professor at Uppsala University in 1986 and promoted to full professor in 2000. His interest in the world’s energy supply began in 1994 when he acted as energy advisor to the Deputy Prime Minister of Sweden. He subsequently changed his field of research from nuclear physics to the depletion of oil, gas and coal and its global consequences in 2002. He organised together with Colin Campbell the First International Workshop on Oil Depletion in May 2002 at Uppsala University. It was in connection with this workshop that ASPO, the Association for the Study of Peak Oil & Gas, was established. Since 2003 he has been president of ASPO International (official website: www.peakoil.netwww.peakoil.net). In 2005 the Prime Minister of Sweden, Göran Persson, became aware of Peak Oil and the research of UGES. He decided to appoint an Oil Commission for which Kjell Aleklett gave the introductory seminar. In that year Kjell Aleklett was also asked to give testimony on Peak Oil before for the US House of Representatives Subcommittee on Energy and Air Quality. In 2007 he was asked by the OECD to write a report on “Peak-Oil and the Evolving Strategies of Oil Importing and Exporting Countries: Facing the Hard Truth about an Important Decline for the OECD Countries.” In 2009 he testified on Peak Oil for the Australian Senate Standing Committees on Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport. Kjell Aleklett frequently lectures and gives interviews on Peak Oil at community, national and international events. His hosts have included international transport and oil corporations, governments and security agencies.

Olle Qvennerstedt

Olle Qvennerstedt was educated as an illustrator and graphic artist at Berghs Reklamskola in Stockholm from 1961 to 1964. Since then he has been active as an illustrator for, among others, Sweden’s foremost broadsheet newspaper Dagens Nyheter and numerous advertising agencies. Between 1977 and 1981 Olle also worked in animated film. In 1981 he took the step into freelance work with a  broad spectrum of commissions and since the early 1990s he has been active as an independent artist. He has now presented over 70 exhibitions of painting, drawing and graphic art both in Sweden and internationally. In the mid-1990s Olle began producing evocative and light-hearted illustrations for Kjell Aleklett’s lectures, and was the obvious choice to illustrate  Peeking at Peak Oil.

Michael Lardelli

Michael Lardelli received his doctorate in developmental genetics from the Council for National Academic Awards of the UK in 1991. He then worked in Sweden as a postdoctoral fellow and assistant professor before returning to Australia in 1997. He currently teaches genetics and investigates the molecular mechanisms underlying Alzheimer’s disease at the University of Adelaide. He has been engaged in spreading awareness about Peak Oil and other resource issues since 2004 and has translated Kjell Aleklett’s blog, Aleklett’s Energy Mix, into English since 2008. To provide a more nuanced text, Prof. Aleklett wrote the first drafts of Peeking at Peak Oil in his mother tongue of Swedish for subsequent translation by Michael.

Very Important Work
By keith renick
This book, Peeking at Peak Oil is a very important work. This work is based on science. It's sound in it's findings. Again, it's science that's based on very sound research methods. It's not pie-in-the sky or doomsday is here. It's sound scientific research that can't be overlooked. Looking at the facts, readers can draw their own conclusions as to how peak oil will play out. Peak Oil is real and it has arrived. Peak Oil is most often misunderstood by economists and the general public. Modern economics is flawed because it never had a reason it include net energy in it's economic models of growth. Economist are obsessed with total labor productivity. The world is consuming more and more energy and getting less and less growth, less bang for their buck. Along with "Peak Oil" we will have water problems as many places that produce oil will require huge amounts of water for water injection to get the remaining oil out of the ground. What's never addressed is the growing car and light truck population of the earth. When my granddaddy Crump was born in 1889 there were maybe 3 cars in the USA. When I was born there was less than 70 million cars in the USA. Today, there are over 250,000,000 cars and light trucks in the USA and growing. Today the global car and light truck population more than 800 million and racing to a billion worldwide. At some point, it doesn't matter how much oil is in the ground or how many miles per gallon your car gets. What matters will be the total number of cars and light trucks in the world, all of them, more than a billion, wanting their gas tanks topped off. But the average person doesn't want to hear that there are limits. Tap water and gasoline will always be there in abundance and will always be affordable. Many believe everyone who can afford a car should have one and the earth can support one billion cars, one and a half billion cars, 2 billion cars or more. The total number of cars and light trucks in the world has never crossed their minds. How can it be expected that China and India will stop making cars? They won't and the demand for oil will overtake production forever. At some point, the question might not be how much oil is left in the world but rather how are we going to use the oil that is left? Only about 2 thirds of a barrel of oil is used to make gasoline, diesel and jet fuel. This is the term "peak oil" refers to most often is that it's a liquid fuel transportation problem. This statement is true. However, I am very concerned about the remaining one third that's used in manufacturing thousands of products that we use everyday. Now we call everything oil. Heavy sour, tar and NGL. I was very honored several years ago when Dr. Colin Campbell emailed me some of his field-by-field estimates for Saudi Arabia. I believe the author of this book and Dr. Colin Campbell are the 2 most informed experts on the subject of "peak oil." The quality of their research is unquestionable. While I do not share the authors belief that we can feed a future world of 9 billion people, the authors knowledge and effort that went into "Peeking at Peak OIl," is truly remarkable. Peak oil
By Tom Wilson
This is far and away the best summary of the global oil situation I've seen in 3 years of researching. Written from a European academic perspective, the author and his students have an astounding degree of experience, independence, and access.

The delightful, often whimsical artwork is remarkably effective in conveying serious concepts. In our family, I found they bridge a gap to the non-analytical members.

The authors conclusions are radically different from what the public is hearing out of the IEA, EIA and most recently, the US National Intelligence Council.

For those of us in the United States and the OECD,his conclusion is that oil available for import could drop 42% between 2010 and 2020 - or worse. The supporting background data in the book is exhaustive.

This is an excellent book. It ranks #82,888 on Amazon's book list, 82,887 places behind 'The Legend of Zelda, Hyrule Historia'.

Uh-oh.

The most important book in the history of the world. Most people won't even come close to reading it.
By Daniel Hood
Sometime 2006/7 I remember having a profound feeling that things were off course but had very little understanding of the way civilization truly functioned as a whole system. I ignored it, caught up in the "infinite growth game". I was paid good money in the financial sector and it would always be that way. 2008 was the very first of the "Peak Oil" warning shots across the bow of civilization. Not only have most people ignored it, the powers that be have systematically attempted to decieve, pretend and extend whilst all the time disrespecting the universal laws of nature. It's beyond comprehension and both Kjell and Colin were on to it long ago. Our leaders are delusional if not outright psychotic. We can't lay the blame squarely at their feet however, for are they not just a reflection of society as a whole? It's safe to say most people simply will not accept the truth and mass delusion as we know can quickly turn into mass psychosis, a more sinister illness.

As for the book, all I can say is this; Kjell Aleklett and Colin Campbell have to go down as two exceptionally brave men. They really are inspiring leaders. They have dared to speak the truth. I for one will make attempts to change my life and do the best I can to live more sustainably. We are part of this planet not seperate from it. What we do to the planet we do to ourselves. 7 billion souls and rising mortgaged off the back of cheap oil and now it's time to pay.

The level of scientific detail and analysis is astounding. The painstaking research undertaken is exemplary as is the explanation of complex connected energy systems delievered in simple form. So much so that most if not all other global institutions, have tuned into the scientifically detailed "peer reviewed" work undertaken by these scientists. The IEA, the EIA, WTO, OECD, CIA, Pentagon, MUST, MI5/6 and a list of other alphabet soup of global agencies. I'm grateful to science for giving us logic, reason and rationality. I am now forewarned and therefore forearmed and this is empowering. Giving me power therefore gives me optimism and frees me from delusions of grandeur. The exact effect these two men wish to have on the world.

Once you start reading, you will not stop. You wont have to wait for decades to see whether these men are speaking the truth, try months. The greatest powerdown in history could only be a matter of months away.

As much as I'd like to believe we have an abundant amount of energy to power us through for centuries I suspect it's simply not the case and the case presented is compelling.

The Philadelphia Barrio: The Arts, Branding, and Neighborhood Transformation, by Frederick F. Wherry

How does a so-called bad neighborhood go about changing its reputation? Is it simply a matter of improving material conditions or picking the savviest marketing strategy? What kind of role can or should the arts play in that process? Does gentrification always entail a betrayal of a neighborhood’s roots? Tackling these questions and offering a fresh take on the dynamics of urban revitalization, The Philadelphia Barrio examines one neighborhood’s fight to erase the stigma of devastation.

Frederick F. Wherry shows how, in the predominantly Latino neighborhood of Centro de Oro, entrepreneurs and community leaders forged connections between local businesses and cultural institutions to rebrand a place once nicknamed the Badlands. Artists and performers negotiated with government organizations and national foundations, Wherry reveals, and took to local galleries, stages, storefronts, and street parades in a concerted, canny effort to reanimate the spirit of their neighborhood.

Complicating our notions of neighborhood change by exploring the ways the process is driven by local residents, The Philadelphia Barrio presents a nuanced look at how city dwellers can make commercial interests serve the local culture, rather than exploit it.

Review
“In this bold and deeply original work, Wherry takes sociological understandings of the American underclass to a new level. Against cynical ‘realism,’ he makes a cultural-sociological case for the power of agency and performance and how the arts can effect the material transformation of impoverished ethnic communities.”

(Jeffrey C. Alexander, Yale University )

“Many of Philadelphia’s ethnic enclaves are celebrated for their vibrant art scenes and urban culture, yet simultaneously maligned as dangerous pockets of crime and poverty. In The Philadelphia Barrio, Wherry illustrates how a variety of community stakeholders—including residents, shop owners and restaurateurs, artists and performers, and local organizers and activists—try to rejuvenate their neighborhood with creativity and sweat equity in the hopes of resuscitating not only its economic vitality but its honor and symbolic reputation in the city as well. In doing so, he shows us how the character of an urban area need not be etched in asphalt and concrete for all time. This is a beautiful book.”

(David Grazian, University of Pennsylvania )

About the Author
Frederick F. Wherry is associate professor of sociology at the University of Michigan and the author of Global Markets and Local Crafts: Thailand and Costa Rica Compared.

Animal Eyes provides a comparative account of all known types of eye in the animal kingdom, outlining their structure and function with an emphasis on the nature of the optical systems and the physical principles involved in image formation. A universal theme throughout the book is the evolution and taxonomic distribution of each type of eye, and the roles of different eye types in the behaviour and ecology of the animals that possess them. In comparing the
specific capabilities of eyes, it considers the factors that lead to good resolution of detail and the ability to function under a wide range of light conditions. This new edition is fully updated throughout, incorporating more than a decade of new discoveries and research.

Where magic has never died...

Lady Jasmina Karlyle snuck into her mother's bedroom like a thief. To her dismay, she realized that she was getting quite skilled at breaking and entering. Jasmina ignored the illusion of slobbering, snarling wolves that her mother had set to protect the chamber from intruders, and began to search the contents of several bandboxes.

She carefully set aside a lovely bonnet decorated with iridescent feathers, a lacquered fan painted with swans, several lace-trimmed handkerchiefs, and a beaded reticule. A glitter of red caught her eye, and she scrabbled for it, scowling with disappointment when she held it up and realized it was only a jeweled button.

She put everything back into the bandbox and opened the lid of another. It was astonishing, really, how clever her mother could be when she set her mind to it. Illusory boxes were interspersed with the real ones, so that her collection looked double. Fortunately, Jasmina had searched her mother's belongings often enough that she knew where the real items were stored.

The door rattled and Jasmina spun guiltily, waving her fingers with the absent-minded habit she'd developed whenever she cast a spell. She couldn't quite make herself invisible, but her spell would cause whoever entered the room to overlook her presence.

Despite being her mother's maid for forty years, dear Nanette took one glance at the snarling wolves and slammed the door shut again.

Jasmina smiled and continued her search. Nothing in the larger boxes! She moved her search to the smaller, decorative boxes that littered Mother's chiffonier. She shook her head with frustration. There was still the wardrobe to search, and the washing stand cupboard, then beneath the canopied bed-and she hadn't even checked Mother's dressing room yet.

And all for an ugly brooch that looked exactly like-

Jasmina blinked. Nestled among other jewelry, in a pretty box decorated with tiny abalone shells, lay the Duchess of Hagersham's brooch. Her instincts had been correct. Last evening at the Hagersham dinner, her mother had been admiring the duke's new gift to his wife with a little too much avarice.

Jasmina held the brooch up to the candlelight, and the large garnet in the center of the piece danced with reflected light. The jewel itself was quite stunning, but the silver figures carved around the sides of it leered grotesquely at her. Ugly little creatures with the most shocking anatomically correct details.

Whatever had possessed her mother to "borrow" it?

Jasmina froze. She could hear the pounding of her heart and realized that the snarling of the wolves had stopped, which could only mean-

"Lucy." Aunt Ettie's voice carried through the closed door. "Are you getting ready for the ball so soon?"

Mother answered, but Jasmina didn't hear the reply. Jasmina shoved the brooch into the pocket sewn into the seam of her dress and sprinted across the room as quickly as her petticoats would allow. Her mother always noticed her, no matter how strongly she cast her spell. She slipped inside the connecting door to Mother's dressing room just as the bedroom door opened, and sighed with relief. Her mother hadn't caught her, thank heavens, which meant she wouldn't have to bear another scene with Mother weeping excuses.

Jasmina crept out the main door and into the hallway and around the stairwell to the safety of her own bedroom. She collapsed on her bed, fighting for breath against the confines of her corset, and dissolved her spell.

A soft tapping on her door, and Aunt Ettie entered. "Well, were we right?"

Jasmina nodded, staring into emerald green eyes that matched her own. But the resemblance stopped there, for Aunt's features were sharp and intelligent, whereas Jasmina's matched those of her mother: soft and innocent.

"Oh dear." Aunt settled her skirts over the arms of the dressing table chair. "My silly, foolish sister. I don't suppose we should tell your father this time?"

Jasmina rose and smoothed the wrinkles from the counterpane before she carefully rolled it to the foot of the bed. "We have been over this before." Even Aunt Ettie sometimes forgot that Jasmina's doll-like features hid a keen intelligence and a will of iron. "Father wouldn't have the slightest idea how to handle the situation, short of locking Mother away. And it's a woman's duty to keep a man's house a refuge against the rest of the world. Since Mother is unable to do so, that task falls to me."

"I just wish I could do more." Aunt tucked a stray lock of prematurely gray hair back into her severe coiffure.

"Dear Aunt Henrietta, you have already given up all of your prospects to keep our family secret safe. And my magic makes it so much easier to handle the situation."

"I suppose you're right. But it means you shall miss the queen's ball tonight."

Jasmina shrugged and presented her back to her aunt, who began to unbutton the back of her gown.

"If only my sister weren't so..." Aunt left her thought unspoken and pushed the bodice of Jasmina's dress forward. "She insists she's only ‘borrowing' from people, and that she has every intention of returning the item right away. She just forgets to."

Jasmina tugged at her sleeves, hearing the frustration in Aunt's voice. She had tried talking to Mother about it as well.

"And then somehow," continued her aunt, "she turns it around and makes me feel guilty. As if it's all my fault, and I'm being quite vulgar for even mentioning it."

"I just think it's something she can't control, and it frightens her," replied Jasmina. "That's why she needs me." Jasmina gasped with relief as the stays of her corset were loosened. "All that matters is keeping Mother and Father happy."

"But you, Jaz. I'm afraid that you'll sacrifice all of your happiness for their own."

"On the contrary. Can you imagine our social standing if Mother's... eccentricity was known?"

Aunt sniffed. "That wasn't quite what I meant."

The door flew open and the subject of their discussion sailed into the room. Mother looked stunning in a pale green ball gown that matched the color of her eyes. Her blonde hair, a shade darker than Jasmina's, was decorated with diamond-studded pins that matched the elegant necklace around her throat. A natural pink blush complemented her smooth complexion, and she'd used only a hint of illusion to smooth the wrinkles from around her eyes. "Jasmina, dear, what are you wearing to the..."

Jasmina stepped out of the puddle of her dress and petticoats and staggered over to her bed, the back of her hand pressed to her forehead.

Mother's full lips puckered in a charming frown. "Whatever is the matter, dear?"

"My head... hurts dreadfully." Jasmina collapsed onto the bedding.

Aunt Henrietta raised a brow at her from behind Mother's back. Jasmina coughed to hide a smile. Mother backed up a step. "I hope it's not catching. You know how susceptible I am to the slightest thing."

"I'm sure it's nothing serious, Lucy," replied Aunt Ettie. "But it seems wise to keep Jasmina at home this evening."

Mother looked crestfallen. "Do you think so? This is quite the ball of the season. I would so hate for her to miss it. Now, whatever did I come in here for? No matter. Henrietta, you must hurry and get dressed."

Aunt Ettie frowned. "Perhaps I should stay home with Jaz."

"Certainly not. There's no reason for both of you to miss the ball. I will send up her maid with some bitters."

Mother swept out of the room and it felt empty with just the two of them left in it. Mother had that kind of presence.

Jasmina leapt out of bed and knelt in front of her wardrobe, opening the bottom drawer and pulling out the black clothing she'd purchased from a chimney sweep.

"You've become quite the actress," Aunt Ettie said.

Jasmina shuddered dramatically. "Perish the thought." She pulled the rough material of the shirt over her chemise. She barely winced in shame when she pulled on the drawers before stepping into the trousers.

She smeared ashes from the fireplace over her face and surveyed her appearance in the cheval glass. The cap! She pulled it from the pocket of the trousers, stuffed her side curls up into it, and checked her appearance again.

She'd never pass as a boy. She had too much of her mother's features for that. But she wanted to make sure that if a stronger wizard saw through her illusion, he wouldn't recognize her. A chimney sweep walking the streets of London at night wouldn't hazard a second glance, but a woman alone... heavens!

And after all, she planned on sneaking into a duke's house, and her spell didn't make her invisible.

"You look dreadful," pronounced Aunt Ettie. "Why can't we just find some excuse to call on Duke Hagersham tomorrow?"

Jasmina transferred the brooch from her dress to her trouser pocket. "Because it's safer to return it before anyone knows it's missing. Besides, you were caught returning that ring to the baron." Even though the scandal had died down, the rumor that Miss Henrietta Forster was a thief had ruined her chances of marriage.

"But this is entirely unladylike. Not to mention dangerous."

"I've done it before," Jasmina said, "and will most likely do it again. But I don't enjoy it. Please don't make me feel any worse."

Aunt Henrietta sniffed elegantly. Jasmina found it endearing. It was difficult to sniff with elegance; she knew because she'd tried.

Jasmina splayed her fingers, then shook them. Her aunt leaned forward expectantly, her narrow chin jutting out, a look of fascinated attention on her face. Truly, Jasmina didn't need all the hand gesturing or poetry to cast a spell, but it disappointed Aunt if she forgot it.

Besides, it wasn't easy to create an illusion of oneself. She'd use all the props she could get.

"Twin of me,

I create thee,

For the night,

You shall be."

Jasmina made a face. What a horribly dreadful rhyme. But Aunt looked impressed...

The air wavered as a ghostly shape took form. Then Jasmina's hip suddenly burned, a crack of thunder shook the walls of her bedroom, and her body tingled all over.

Aunt Henrietta clapped her hands with delight. "Well done!"

Jasmina smiled weakly and glanced out the window. How odd. No sign of rain. No lightning followed that room-shuddering sound to explain the current that had run through her body. She had never crafted a spell with such... flair. But her illusion looked perfectly created, down to the ribbons on Jasmina's favorite nightgown.

Jasmina took a step forward and looked into her twin's eyes. They stared blankly back into her own. Hmm. Everything seemed fine. "Get into the bed," she instructed. "And go to sleep. If anyone should wake you just mumble and roll over. Can you manage that?"

The illusion didn't answer, of course. It couldn't really think; it just followed her orders.

Aunt Henrietta shuddered. "Truly, Jaz. If you both were in the same room I couldn't pick the real one."

"A royal could. And of course, a baronet-since they're immune to all magic. But my maid won't know the difference, will she?" Jasmina bent over the sleeping woman. Aunt was right, though; she'd done a grand job of duplicating herself. "You will stay in this bed until I come to wake you."

Her illusion smiled sleepily and rolled over.

"Well, I shall require several maids to dress me for the ball this evening," said Aunt Ettie, her mouth curled into a conspiratorial smile. "Shall I make a fuss now?"

Jasmina fumbled in the back of the wardrobe again, pulled out several items, and stuffed them in her pockets. "Yes, if you don't mind."

Aunt Henrietta gave her a wink, then sailed out of the room in a good imitation of Mother. Jasmina waited until she heard the bellpull and the scurrying of servants running up the stairs before she crept down to the kitchen. She paused for a moment at the stairwell, listening for any sounds coming from the room.

But Aunt Ettie had done a superb job of rousting them; except for Cook humming in the scullery, the basement was utterly silent.

Jasmina's fingers waved and she threw on a don't-notice-me spell. Her hip tingled and she frowned, remembering the burning sensation she'd felt before. She quickly slipped into the pantry using her household keys, then made herself comfortable in the corner of the room. Surrounded by their best china and silver, she settled in to wait for the best time to sneak out. In a few hours, most of the gentry, including the Duke of Hagersham, would be at the queen's ball, and she could navigate the streets of London without being noticed.

For a moment Jasmina wished she were her illusion, safely snug in bed. She dreaded to think how drained she would be after tonight; it would take her months to build her magic reserves again.

If she dared make a light, she would take the opportunity to do an inventory of their tableware. Jasmina hadn't done so in a while; running a household took more effort than one would think. She'd been doing it since the age of ten, when she realized Mother had no head for it and needed her help.

When it grew late enough to venture from her hiding place, she created an illusion of a cat with a wiggle of her fingers, her hip tingling again. Heavens, what was causing that sensation? She dug in the pocket of her trousers and pulled out the contents: her handkerchief, a worn pair of gloves, her household keys, and the duchess's brooch.

The closure of the pin on the back of the brooch had come open, and she realized it had probably been poking her for some time. She refastened the catch before stuffing it back in her pocket.

Jasmina opened the pantry door, made sure to lock it behind her, and glanced around the room. The fire glowed softly, banked for the night, but it provided enough light for her to see that the table and floors had been scrubbed clean, the range had been freshly blackened, and the clotheshorse had clean laundry drying on it.

She smiled with pride on her well-ordered household. She had been taught that the cleanliness of a home showed the moral character of its occupants, and certainly no one could dispute hers.

Jasmina padded over to the hallway that led to the male servants' rooms and made her illusionary cat let out a yowl. She cocked her head, waited another breath, and made it yowl again.

Finally, one of the footmen opened his door and cracked an eyelid open towards the floor. "They fergit to let ya out again, heh?"

Jasmina kept to the shadows, making her illusion curl around his feet, a rumbling purr accompanying the cat's flirtation. When the footman made as if to pick up the animal, she shied it from his reach and toward the kitchen door.

He shuffled toward the back door, Jasmina and her illusion following. He palmed the medallion that released the warding spells protecting the house against magical intrusion and let both her and the cat out. She waited to make sure he put up the wards again and then made her way across the cobbled courtyard, past the mews, and into the alley. She dispelled the cat illusion but continued her don't-notice-me spell.

Jasmina squashed down the feeling of alarm at being alone in the streets at night. She rarely left the house without a chaperone. If it hadn't been for the necessity of learning her way around London to return her mother's borrowed goods, she doubted she'd know anything more than the direction to her favorite shops and park. Indeed, her best friend Ellen had once commented that a lady only needed to know her destination, since her escort or coachman would take her there.

Jasmina shuddered to think how shocked Ellen would be to see her now, skulking through alleyways in a chimney sweep's clothes. Of course, her friend would be even more shocked to learn that Jasmina's mother borrowed things... It was always a choice between two evils.

Jasmina squinted, checking the fingerpost of the street she'd just entered. Mandrake Street wasn't large enough to warrant gaslights and so she took it, keeping to the shadows, grateful for the fog that made her almost invisible. Grateful that the duke lived close to her home in Gargoyle Square.

Not too long ago, she'd had to take a horse out of the mews without waking the stable servants and cast spells over them both. She'd been so exhausted from working that much magic, she'd slept for two days afterward. Tonight she kept to the back streets, eventually coming upon Hagersham House by the rear entrance. The Gothic architecture of the mansion made her feel guilty, with all its church-like ornamentation and stained glass windows of dancing angels.

Jasmina recast the cat-illusion spell and her hip burned quite badly. She wondered if the clasp on the brooch had come open again. She gritted her teeth at the sheer impropriety of her current state.

And then sighed and got on with it.

Her cat yowled at the door for almost an hour. If she employed such inconsiderate servants, she'd have them dismissed. What if they didn't open the door? How would she ever get past the wards a duke kept around his home? Unlike earls and marquesses, a duke had the ability to change actual matter. So his wards wouldn't just make you imagine a thousand bees were stinging you-they might actually be doing so.

Jasmina made her cat yowl louder. A curious dog came from the direction of the mews and began to bark at her illusion. He barked louder when the cat ignored him, and finally getting angry at the insult, charged with jaws open and fangs gleaming. She made the cat larger and it snaked out a paw with claws the size of butcher's knives, swiping at the dog's snout.

The dog believed her cat to be real, so he felt the rake of its claws and let out yip-yip-yips of such pain that he set off the rest of the dogs in the neighborhood. Still, Jasmina felt shocked to notice the blood that welled from the dog's nose. Her illusions weren't usually that strong.

Finally someone opened the kitchen door. The butler, by the look of him, his haughty expression twisted with aggravation. "What's going on out here?"

Jasmina had already shrunk her cat back to normal size, but widened its eyes to huge pools of misery.

"Dogs after you, eh? All right, so what are you waiting for, an invitation?"

He opened the door wider, wide enough for Jasmina to get her body through, and both she and the illusion entered the kitchen. The butler shut the door, palmed the warding medallion, and sleepily went back to his room without a backward glance.

Jasmina waited for her eyes to adjust to the gloom, noting that the duke's kitchen wasn't nearly as tidy as her own, and headed up the servants' stairs. If by some chance Duke Hagersham or his wife hadn't gone to the ball tonight, she'd be more likely to encounter them on the grand stairway, and so she used the less conspicuous paths of the servants.

She hesitated at the ground floor, wondering if she should leave the brooch in the dining room, where the duchess had last worn it. But the servants would already have done a thorough cleaning of the room, especially if the duchess had noticed it missing.

Jasmina crept up the stairs to the first floor, went into the drawing room, and pulled the brooch out of her pocket. The fireplace had been cleared. The only light shining into the room came from the gaslights outside. Even so, the gem glowed with a bloodred shimmer in its depths.

She shuddered and stuffed the brooch between the cushions of the settee, wondering again why her mother had chosen such an ugly piece of jewelry.

The sound of muffled laughter made her pause as she stepped out into the hallway, and the wavering light of a candle made her retreat back into the room. Jasmina ducked behind the settee just as a man and woman entered the room.

She recognized the voice of the duke, but the low laughter of the woman sounded nothing like the tittering of his duchess.

"I'm missing a queen's ball for you, my dear."

More soft laughter. "I'll make it worth yer while."

Jasmina heard wet, hungry sounds but resisted the urge to peek around the edge of the settee. Her heart froze at the thought that the duke might see past her spell and disguise.

Jasmina took a silent breath and reassured herself that he wouldn't notice her as long as she didn't draw his attention.

Duke Hagersham gasped, and Jasmina wondered what on earth the woman could be doing to make a man moan so oddly. She heard cloth slithering to the floor and chided herself for her foolishness.

Why else would a man stay home with another woman? She wondered which servant the duke was having an affair with. She wondered how long it would take them to do... well, whatever they were going to do.

Jasmina couldn't risk sneaking out of the room with the duke in it. She tried to plug her ears against the sounds they kept making, but curiosity kept warring with propriety until she finally gave up the battle and dropped her hands.

Her eyes caught the flicker of movement on the wall, and she realized the couple stood in front of the candle. She could clearly see their shadows. The duke stood with his back to the adjacent wall; she recognized the outline of his hawkish nose and his half-open mouth. The woman knelt in front of him, her hands fumbling with... something. And then it sprang free, and Jasmina could clearly see the outline of its shadow on the wall.

Well, she knew men had them. She'd just never seen one before-and she wasn't now, she reassured herself over the pounding of her heart. It was just a shadow. The woman tilted her head back, the duke trembled, and Jasmina watched as the woman opened her mouth.

Her head moved forward and back until the duke groaned and pulled her up by the arms. Their shadows merged for a moment. Then the woman turned her back to him and bent over. The duke pulled up her skirts, making a lump of shadow over the servant's back, and Jasmina could make out the round curves of the woman's bottom.

Jasmina tensed.

The duke's shadow lunged forward and the woman strangled a scream.

Jasmina's heart lurched into her throat, a rush of... something flooded her veins and in blind panic she leaped over the settee. She sprinted across the room. Her eyes met those of the duke's for a fleeting second, and then she was tumbling down the stairs, out the door and into the alley before she even registered the expression on his face.

She'd never seen such a look of utter rapture before.

Jasmina didn't pause in her flight until she reached the safety of her own courtyard. She panted and trembled, confused and outraged. No proper woman would behave in such a fashion. No wonder men constantly took up with servants.

She refused to think about the wetness between her thighs-or to acknowledge that she had run only because she'd throbbed and ached when the duke had plunged himself inside the woman.

Jasmina gathered the remains of her magical strength and created the cat. The same footman promptly let it into the house, and she decided to raise his wages.

It seemed like forever, but it had only been a few hours since her family had left for the ball. They wouldn't be home until dawn, and she certainly had no intention of waiting up for them. When she crept into her room, her maid sat snoring in a chair, and Jasmina was so exhausted that she didn't notice the bed was empty until she lay in it.

Her illusions had always lasted until she returned. Perhaps that crack of thunder had interfered with her concentration, and she hadn't created the spell as strongly as she usually did. Thank heavens her maid had fallen asleep and hadn't noticed Jasmina's absence. Or rather, that of her illusory double.

It was the first time her twin spell had failed her, and Jasmina felt a trickle of alarm, trying to think what might have happened. And then another thought struck her: Why hadn't she set off the duke's wards when she'd run out of the house? But erotic shadows kept dancing through her thoughts and carried her into sleep.

Choosing books sometimes seems like an art form. But at times it is as simple as choosing a favorite author or perhaps in my case a name or what the cover looks like that draws me to the book. Very rarely do I read what the book tends to be about. I wanted to read this because of the title and brief mention of Merlin. So what I went into this thinking there would be more Merlin for me; but, I soon found a book that combined two favorites of mine. I found a story about historical/regency London with that of magic/shape shifting paranormal. Not sure what to expect I found it quite well done in mixing the two. As with regency London there has to be some division in aristocrats after all we can't all be on the same social level even if we run in the same circles. Ms. Kennedy found a way of mixing the two very different worlds adding that little bit of separation. And with such London society will never be the same.

It is hard to put briefly into words what this book is about. There was so much going on to keep ones interest. The upper classes are the ones that carry the magic. The more powerful your magic is the higher class you are in. The shape shifters are looked down upon because their magic tends to be a little erratic/wild so they are given lesser titles such as baronets. But once in a while the two mix and things become so much more than magic.

Lady Jasmina has been using her magic to cover for her mother who is a kleptomaniac. A little secret you don't want know in your social circle so she has to use her magic to sneak back into the homes and replace the stolen jewels her mother has `borrowed'. While in the midst of preparing herself to return one such item she cast an illusion spell so that she will not be missed in her home. Once in the home to return the brooch something goes amiss and her spell changes...Her illusion becomes more real. A twin almost the opposite of herself or is she? As the illusion known as Jaz starts wreaking havoc (you can't blame a girl for wanting to have a little fun) we come across Sir Sterling a baronet who happens to be able to change into a very sexy stallion. Did I just call a stallion sexy? Well, in this case he is extremely handsome in a shabbily clothed way and the stallion part of him is just as well...sexy. Sir Sterling is in search of his sister who was kidnapped. First he meets Jaz with much fire between the two. When Jasmine enters into his life he at first thinks she is Jaz... I think you are getting the picture. Still there is chemistry that can't be denied. As things heat up between the two they form a bond to find the brooch/relic so that Jasmina/Jaz can once again become a whole; along with the search for Sterling's sister. Throw in a couple of your ordinary garden Gnomes named Nuisance and Trouble and Kooky Aunt Henrietta and you are in for a delightful story with a twist on London society.

Ms. Kennedy has a wonderfully fun magical tale of the classic beauty and the beast on her hands that takes us into a new world of enchantment. London as we have never seen it. Whether you are going to the balls or visiting the underground you can't help but fall in love with this new world that she has created. She visually takes you on the adventure where even in the stench of the underground amidst the misfits and the darkness she still showed the magic and the beauty that there is to be found. I know I was truly enchanted. Maybe you will be too.

So much FUN!
By Kathie @First Page to the Last Book Reviews
This was so much FUN! This is a historical with a twist. Magic is the norm in Jolly Old England. It resides in different ways and amounts from the Royals right on down the line. The Baronets are shape shifters.

At one point, our leads are at a ball, dancing on moonbeams! I could just see it.

Lady Jasmina accidentally creates a double of herself, not just an image, but an almost living, breathing, double. She leaves her in bed, pretending to sleep, but the double, going by her nickname of Jas, goes to the ball instead. There she falls into lust with Sir Sterling Thorn, a were-stallion. They hie off to bed...!

Okay, the cover drew me in. I don't recall reading about were-stallions before...and this cover sucked me in. And I was not disappointed. Sir Sterling is HOT..and sweet...and ALPHA.

The reason that Lady Jasmina needed a double was so that she could return a piece of jewelry that her very light fingered mother had "borrowed" from one of her friends. She apparently does this often.

Unfortunately the brooch was created by Merlin and it is a highly sought piece of silver.

So, who does Sir Sterling really love? Jaz, the sexy imposter, or Lady Jasmina with her prissy ways, but watch out when her walls fall!

Throw in a couple of mischievous garden gnomes and this was a ride (and a read) worth taking.

I'm enthralled with the world that Ms. Kennedy has created. I want more!

Thank you, NetGalley and Sourcebooks Casablanca, for giving me the opportunity to read DOUBLE ENCHANTMENT. It was a blast!

"totally enchanting"
By mnix
Lady Jasmina Karlyle is in a bit of a bind. Between returning items stolen by her kleptomaniac mother and dealing with her powers, sometimes things have gone wrong. This is one of those times. With a simple spell gone awry, Jasmina has made a duplicate of herself. If that is not bad enough, Jasmina the second, nicknamed Jaz, is the exact opposite of Jasmina. Jaz has no respectability and when men begin talking to Jasmina as if they know her intimately, she knows that something has to be done.

Sir Sterling doesn't understand how Jaz can act like she has no idea who he is. A stallion shifter, his confusion over Jasmina/Jaz is apparent. It isn't until Jasmina convinces him of her witch status and the bogus spell that things begin to clear up. When it is all said and done, however, will Sterling love Jasmina or will the rogue Jaz hold his heart?

Double Enchantment gave me double the pleasure to read. Book two of Ms. Kennedy's Relics of Merlin series; the hero was a bit different than your normal run of the mill shifter. He was a stallion shifter and as such was powerful and beautifully erotic. Jasmina's troubles made me smile, except when she was being accused of foul deeds, and I had no choice but to read Double Enchantment cover to cover!

Highly entertaining, often times surreal, but most of all totally enchanting, Double Enchantment is a quaint, well-written read. Kathryne Kennedy is now on my reviewer radar!
