Picture History of the Andrea Doria (Dover Maritime), by William H., Jr. Miller

Graceful, fast, and luxuriously outfittted, the Andrea Doria was one of the most famous ships of the 20th century. On July 26, 1956, three years after its inaugural voyage, the popular Italian liner was assured of an immortal place in maritime history after colliding with another vessel off the New England coast and sinking. Maritime expert William Miller pays tribute to that magnificent ship in this authoritative, profusely illustrated archive. Scores of rare photographs provide views of lounges and staterooms, shots of the ship in port, as well as depictions of its glorious twin, the Christoforo Colombo, and other fleetmates.

The Title is Misleading
By P. Lanphear
I give this book a 4 although I would have given it a 5 had it not been for one thing - the book's title suggests it's all about the Andrea Doria which is why I purchased it. However, it's really an overview of the Italian Line with a small section dedicated to the Andrea Doria. There are many wonderful photos of many great Italian ships which makes it worth purchasing this book. The photos of the Doria are wonderful too though there could have been more interior and exterior photos included. I know more photos exist. The Doria is my favorite liner and I was very excited waiting to receive it - I was disappointed when I saw the book was not what it's name suggested, but was then pleased with the wonderful photos of the other liners which I'd never seen before. So, it is a wonderful addition to a collection but just be forwarned it's NOT about the Doria.

Good Pictorial Overview Of The "Andrea Doria"
By Robert I. Hedges
This book is a welcome addition to the library of any maritime historian, particularly those with an interest in the classic Italian liners. Though the book's title is "Picture History of the 'Andrea Doria'" it actually covers most all Italian liners, with particular emphasis on the "Andrea Doria," of course.

The photographs are good and I had not seen many of them before. There is good coverage of other famous Italian liners such as "Rex," Conte de Savoia," "Leonardo da Vinci," and the sister ship of the "Doria," the "Cristoforo Colombo." Other competing liners are also covered in lesser detail.

The book is generally quite good, and Miller has assembled a very good general historical overview of Italian shipping in the twentieth century. The book is in a rather odd format, and is only 118 pages long, making it somewhat resemble a special edition periodical.

Overall, I give the book four stars. It is a welcome and worthwhile read, yet I would have actually preferred more photographic coverage of the "Doria," particularly with more emphasis on interior shots.

A striking and memorable visual tribute to some of the greatest ships in history
By Midwest Book Review
In 1956 one of the most luxurious 20th century pleasure ship collided with the Stockholm off New England and sank. Maritime expert Bill Miller's pictorial history presents nearly two hundred rare vintage black and white photos of the interior of the ship and the ship in port, along with its twin the Cristoforo Colombo and other similar luxury liners. The result's a striking and memorable visual tribute to some of the greatest ships in history, with plenty of text revealing background history.

Werewolves - Throughout the British Isles (Fantasy and Horror Classics), by Montague Summers

Montague Summers was a prolific writer and public eccentric who harboured a lifelong interest in the occult. His 'real life' investigations, such as Werewolves – Throughout the British Isles, are classic occult texts, notable for their archaic writing style, intimate style of narration, and overtone of belief in the reality of the subjects treated. Many of the horror stories of monsters and ghouls, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

The emotionally realistic and elegant portrait of mourning in the days and months following 9/11
As Renata, a linguist for the New York City Public Library, crosses the Brooklyn Bridge on her way to work one morning, she looks up to see a flash of orange and blue. Two planes have hit the World Trade Center, and with that, her world changes entirely. Renata’s connection to the tragedy grows deeper as her boyfriend, an overzealous social worker, begins to take care of a baby orphaned by the attacks. And then she meets a mute teenage girl in the rubble of the Twin Towers who may or may not be her long lost niece—a family connection as tenuous as it is painful. The winner of New York magazine’s Best Literary Fiction award in 2005, this novel evocatively represents the forms of grief in the wake of major trauma.

From Publishers Weekly
The aftermath of the World Trade Center attack provides a traumatic backdrop to Schwartz's latest novel (after In the Family Way), an intellectually evocative and emotionally trenchant exploration of troubled intimacy and the constitutive effects of language. Renata, a Brooklyn-based 30-something librarian with a gift for recondite tongues, is stymied in her promising affair with fellow Brooklynite Jack by her vows of "emotional celibacy," the result of a long history of family trauma, including the tragic death of her twin sister, Claudia, at age 16. When the Twin Towers are struck, Jack's assistant at his downtown social services agency perishes in the collapse, and he and Renata become the caretakers of her baby, Julio. As Renata develops an obsessive attachment to the baby as well to a mute stray teenager she names after her dead niece, Gianna (born just before Claudia's death), Schwartz artfully reveals the origins of Renata's psychic scars: the twins' overenmeshed relationship, the death of their father and institutionalization of their mother, plus Gianna's mysterious drowning. Renata's emotional wariness links to her suspicions of language in general, which are exacerbated by the president's verbal response to the terrorist attack. With Renata's complex balance of intellectual skepticism, emotional fragility and street smarts, Schwartz continues to show herself a rigorous novelist. (June)

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Schwartz is a connoisseur of anguish, especially survivor's guilt, yet she is also an adept choreographer of romance. Incisive, unafraid to flirt with melodrama in pursuit of a compelling story, acutely descriptive yet to the point, she now brings to fiction the era-defining tragedy of September 11, 2001. New Yorker Renata, a librarian with a gift for languages, is a hard nut to crack, so thick is the protective shell she acquired after the mysterious death of her twin sister when they were 16. Claudia had just given birth to a daughter, father unidentified. Shortly thereafter, Renata's father also dies, her mother loses her mind, and Renata ends up raising her niece only to have the child disappear. All this pain keeps Renata on guard against intimacy, even with her kind lover, Jack, until 9/11 delivers another motherless girl to her doorstep. Schwartz evokes in electrifying detail the deep shock felt in the wake of the attacks, intuiting the psychological and spiritual dimensions of everyone's obsession with TV coverage, the creation of "impromptu memorials," and the longing to return to normal routines. But this is also a richly nuanced love story, a tale of earned trust and courageous receptivity in a time of fanaticism and war. Donna Seaman

A novel about redemption
By Elizabeth C. Hadas
This marvelous novel combines deep insights into human suffering and redemption with painfully sharp awareness of the importance of speaking the truth and the impossibility of hearing the truth from our political leaders. The story begins with the events of 9/11 but actually gets more powerful as it veers away from current events and into the protagonist's struggle with her private demons.

Compelling writing
By HenderHouse
Schwartz's storytelling pulled me through "The Writing on the Wall" as each new revelation unfolded. While the revelations happen quietly, they completely change the landscape of Renata's life. The connection to the 9/11 attack on the Twin Towers is an interesting corrolary to the losses that Renata has faced. The 9/11 attacks were huge and visible and the losses were known to all around the world. Renata's loss was similar (sudden disappearance of a loved one), but visible only to those directly affected. A thoughtful and thought-provoking story.

Jack's tower of love
By Patricia Kramer
Another powerful book by Lynne Sharon Schwartz. Reading this book helped me move the events of 9/11 away from the still unthinkable horror to the effect that day had on the lives of real people as they first made their way through the ash and dust on the street and through the days beyond that.

I loved the strength of Jack's love for Renata. I liked that he fell for her before he learned her many layered aches from the past and stayed with her ready to move through and beyond to their days beyond that.

I liked how the characters were able to rise to the occasion when they needed do, including Renata's mother who loved her enough to reject her offered fantasy and demand that her daughter live her life and overcome her losses in the days beyond that.

Time Flies is a spunky, lighthearted road trip down memory lane as two best friends reunite for their high-school reunion and challenge their fears. Years ago, Melanie left her friends and native New England to follow her husband to Atlanta, uprooting their two young sons. Now at midlife, she’s a recently separated, self-employed metal sculptor with a fear of highways, sawing her marriage bed into disposable chunks and bending the springs into art. When her best friend urges her to return home for their class reunion, Melanie’s driving phobia kicks in, and she begs off. But it’s hard to resist when an old crush she can barely remember lures her with his flirtatious e-mails. So she takes the plunge. What follows is a lot of reminiscing to the soundtrack of the good old days when the BFs finally meet up for their driving adventure. The banter is a lot of fun, and the characters’ realization of what is important is certain to make readers yearn for reconnections of their own. Another delightful beach read from the author of Wallflower in Bloom (2012). --Diane Holcomb

© 2013 Claire CookTIME FLIES  Chapter 1When my cell phone rang, I'd just finished cutting up my marriage mattress.  I put down my chainsaw carefully so it wouldn't scratch the hardwood floor. Then I slid my safety glasses up to the top of my head like a headband and reached for my phone. "Hello-oh," I said. "Hey," B.J. said. "It's me. What's up?" I puffed a sprinkling of sawdust from the phone. "Not much. Same old, same old." "So, check your email--the invitation just went out. You are coming up for our reunion, right?"  "No way." When I shook my head for emphasis, more sawdust flaked from my hair like dandruff. "Come on, B.J., we've been over this at least eight times already." B.J. blew a raspberry into the phone line. "No way is not an acceptable answer. You're going. No excuses. You're not still mooning around about Kurt, are you?" "You mean like counting the days till he sends me a Hallmark card for Almost Ex-Wife's Day?" B.J. still laughed exactly like she had in high school, a series of sharp staccato barks. "See, your sense of humor is back."  "Ha," I said.  "What you need is some fun in the sun. Plus, if you ask me, there aren't nearly enough opportunities to act like a teenager once you get to be our age, so we've got to grab any chance we get. And the good news is we can drink legally this time around." "Great," I said, "but I'm still not going." "Jan wants all of us to stay at her beach house for the week--" "Jan who?" "Don't give me Jan who. Jan Siskin. Actually, I think it's Reeves now. Or maybe it was Reeves but it's now Schroff. Or maybe it's Siskin again. Who cares. Anyway, as you well remember, we kind of hung out with her all four years in high school. And now she has a beach house." "I don't think she really even liked me," I said. B.J. aimed a blast of air across seven states and into my ear. "Hey, you haven't heard from Veronica, have you?" I sighed. "You mean in this millennium?" "She's not returning my phone calls or emails. But. She. Will." I let B.J.'s tenacity wash over me like a wave. When I looked down, I saw that my non-cell phone-holding palm was open, face up, as if to emphasize my own uncertainty. B.J. was still talking. "So, you know how I'm on the committee, right. Well, we've decided we're not going to mention either the year we graduated or how many years it's been. We're just going to call it The Marshbury High School Best Class/Best Reunion Evah." "That's ridiculous." I opened one of the French doors to the deck off the master bedroom to get rid of the gasoline smell. I seriously needed to upgrade to a battery-operated chainsaw.  "Well, the committee consensus is that the actual numbers might be a turnoff. It's a lot of years to wrap your brain around, and none of us feel that old, and most of us don't look that old, especially the women, so we just thought it would be more fun if we focused on the positive." "Which would be?" B.J. let out a little snort. "That we're still alive?" I took a quick stab at the math, then gave up. "How many years has it been anyway?" "Don't even think about it," B.J. said. "It's way too depressing. Come on, Mel, we haven't seen each other in forever."  "Okay, so how about you go to the reunion, and then you can fly down here and tell me all about it." "Mel, I'm serious." "Me, too. I'm seriously not going, B.J., so drop it. Please." "Give me one good reason you shouldn't go." I sighed. "Everyone else will dress better, look better, be better than I am. High school reunions are like a test for personal success and I'll slide right off the bell curve. I'm not famous, I didn't turn into a knockout, my husband left me. And I stopped wearing heels years ago and now my feet will only tolerate work boots and flip-flops." "One good reason," B.J. said. "I'm still waiting." After we hung up, I put my cell phone down and contemplated the savaged chunks of king size bed before me. It's not that I was bitter. I mostly just wanted the springs.  *  Okay, maybe I was a teensy bit bitter.  Our two sons, Trevor and Troy, were seven and six when Kurt had dragged me kicking and screaming to the suburbs of Atlanta. They were thriving on sandy summers boogie-boarding at the beach and snowy winters sledding down the biggest hill in our little seaside Massachusetts town. We lived a tree-lined walk away from the best local elementary school. I had a boring but comfortable part-time job answering phones for a nearby art gallery that let me work my hours around my kids. Mothers' hours. Life was good. Kurt said his job offer had come out of the blue. As if it were luck. Or destiny. Kismet. Serendipity. His old boss had taken a job at a big Atlanta corporation a few years before, where he'd been moving up ever since. And now he wanted Kurt to come work for him. "Out of the blue," I repeated as I stirred a pot of homemade chicken alphabet soup with a wooden spoon. "He just called you out of the blue and said uproot your whole family and take them away from everything they've ever loved because I have a job for you. Even though you already have a perfectly good job." Trevor ran through the kitchen and out the back door. "Give it back," Troy yelled as he ran after him. "Dinner," I yelled. "Ten minutes." Kurt shrugged. He loosened the blue-striped tie I'd bought because it reminded me of the way his eyes changed shades in different lights. He unbuttoned the top button of his white shirt. Long-sleeved. Extra starch. I stared him down. In the fading light of the early evening, his eyes were a dark navy, almost black. He looked away first. I flicked on the kitchen lights and turned my attention back to the soup. "Smells good," he said as I stirred. I kept stirring. "Okay, I put out a few feelers," he finally said. "It's time to move on. I think I've taken things as far as I can here."  For a quick, crazy second I thought he was talking about the boys and me.  *  After I loaded the bed chunks into heavy-duty black plastic contractor bags and dragged them out to the garage, I vacuumed the bedroom. Then I hauled my mattress-flecked self into the bathroom and turned on the water. It sputtered like it always did, then burst forth in a ferocious battle of brushed nickel showerheads and body jets. I peeled off my clothes and let the wet needles pummel me like a bad marriage. I towel-dried while I contemplated putting on actual pants, the kind that zipped and buttoned at the waist and everything. This seemed extreme, so I went with my regular uniform: yoga pants, baggie T-shirt, flip-flops.  As soon as I opened the barn doors on one side of my Honda Element, I leaned in and flipped one of the two back seats forward at the waist. Then I lifted the whole seat up and hooked it to the side of the car with the carabiner that dangled from the ceiling. I circled the car and repeated the steps on the other side. An amazing amount of empty space materialized, anchored by the Element's black nonslip rubber-matted floor, which actually hosed down for easy cleaning. I wanted a house like that.  "All aboard," I said in my cheeriest talking-out-loud-to-yourself voice. "Next stop Ikea."

Surprisingly Good!
By booklove
I cannot tell a lie. I normally don't gravitate toward the women's lit genre, but I found Time Flies by Claire Cook to be surprisingly good. My surprise is in no way meant as a disparaging comment on Claire Cook's skills as an author. In fact it is meant as a compliment. She has created a wonderful book in a genre I usually don't like.

The dialogue between Melanie and her best friend, B.J., is witty and real and just the type of banter you'd expect from two women who have been friends since high school. This dynamic makes me long for my own friends in high school with whom I've lost contact. But life goes on, as they say, and that is also one of the themes of this book. Whether we like it or not, life goes on. Sometimes it takes us to wonderful places and sometimes we wonder how we ever ended up where we are today.

Melanie comes face to face with where her life has led her, and she must deal with and own up to her part. In many ways this book is the story of a woman finally having her coming of age as an unexpectedly single empty-nester. Ms. Cook does a wonderful showing how Melanie faces (or not) the changes in her life and the confusion with how she's supposed to deal with things. There's no right or wrong answer, but rather finding value in oneself and deciding what is best.

As these two women prepare to attend their long-awaited high school reunion, both realize that their lives are good and they've been lucky so far. And while most of the trip does not measure up to the lofty pedestal Melanie has placed it upon, she comes to realize that the quick fix and rose-colored glasses aren't the best answer to her challenges in life. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good story about navigating the twists and turns of life.

FUN and POIGNANT!
By Beth Hoffman
Several months ago I read an advanced copy of Claire Cook's TIME FLIES, and from page one I was cheering for the main character, Melanie. Melanie is lovable, and real, and silly ... someone I would like to be friends with. She tells her story with heart and humor, and she exposes her vulnerability during a time when her life has been turned upside down. TIME FLIES is a rollicking fun yet poignant novel that's sure to hit home with anyone who has ever experienced heartbreak, fought against a phobia, entertained a fantasy, or dared to say yes to an unknown future peeking above the horizon of midlife. Claire Cook has crafted another winner that's guaranteed to be a favorite of book clubs and shared among girlfriends. Run out and buy this one, and pick up several copies as gifts!

Claire Cook does it again - a perfect summer read
By Laurie Nerat
I love Claire Cook and this book was no exception, she is the master of reinvention. This book was such a fun trip back down memory lane, I felt like I was riding along in the car with Mel and BJ as they got ready for their high school reunion. The only disappointing part about this book was when it ended. Some younger readers may not get some of the references, but if you are over 40, try to find yourself a 'Tab' and kick back for a great read.

Caterina Dupeski claims to have been switched at birth for the unwanted son of a poor cottager. She even has proof. But there's a big difference between being born a lady and actually being a lady. Equipped with an indifferent education and no training in ton etiquette, she's the least likely candidate for the moniker 'lady.'

Faced with an upheaval of all he knows and an impossible scandal, Giles strikes a bargain with Caterina; he proposes a marriage of convenience. He will train her to be his countess and give her the comfort of his wealth; in turn, he gets to keep the title, and society is none the wiser.

Love was never part of the proposition, but they both get more than they bargained for.

The story started out interesting but half- way through it became so predictable as to be silly. I wound up skimming through to the ending.

Cuts Through Bone: A Mystery (A Guthrie and Vasquez Mystery), by Alaric Hunt

Featured in The New York Times Magazine!
Winner of the PWA Best First Private Eye Novel Competition

At first, Rachel Vasquez found her new job working for private detective Clayton Guthrie promising. He got her a gun and a license and took her to target practice. But lately she's just been doing surveillance, and it's not her idea of an exciting time. She is contemplating quitting when Guthrie lands an intriguing case that will take all their wits and guts to solve.

Camille Bowman, a beautiful blond Columbia student and Manhattan heiress, is found dead, shot by a gun that belonged to her fiancé Greg Olsen, an Afghan war veteran. Guthrie is hired to prove Olsen's innocence, and fortunately he thinks Olsen smells clean. The detectives return to the scene of the crime where they see a vagrant who claims he heard the shots and picked the girl's wallet. Tiring of their questions, the vagrant flees, and Vasquez and Guthrie must track a man who's an expert at disappearing while also butting heads with the NYPD, cracking doors at Columbia University, and crawling through the city's subterranean tunnels.

To complicate matters, the murder could be part of a spree of killings being called the Barbiedoll murders, in which women are killed for no apparent reason and with no suspect in sight. The NYPD would like to pin them all on Olsen, and his life will depend on Guthrie and Vasquez catching the real culprit. In a race against time, the detectives gather clues that culminate in a bloody chase of one very determined and surprising killer.

Cuts Through Bone is a suspenseful ride, a novel that is atmospheric, stylistic, and gritty to boot. In Vasquez and Guthrie, youth and brashness meet experience and resolve, making for one of the most intriguing PI teams around. Debut author Alaric Hunt has penned a riveting hardboiled mystery, a contemporary story with the feel of a classic PI novel and a scope as large and complex as New York City, and even reaching beyond.

From Booklist
Rachel Vasquez, PI Clayton Guthrie’s rookie operative, is thrilled when the pair is hired to investigate a Columbia University student’s murder, mainly because it offers respite from the interminable training exercises Guthrie has been giving her. Camille Bowman was killed with her war-veteran boyfriend’s gun, and, because the crime matched the profile of an active serial killer, the NYPD suspects Greg Olsen of the entire spree. Guthrie and Vasquez, hired to establish Olsen’s innocence, agree their client seems an unlikely killer, but Guthrie knows it’s easy to be deceived. They follow the trail of the case from a subterranean vagrants’ hideout through Columbia’s Greek scene, checking out along the way Camille’s past trysts and Greg’s Afghan War tours. Publisher promotions highlight the author’s current incarceration, but this debut mystery, a PWA Best First Private Eye Novel Competition winner, doesn’t need a shocking authorial backstory. Hunt’s enticing investigators invite a series, and the red-herring-riddled gumshoe story explodes into a climax rivaling those of Robert Crais and Ridley Pearson. --Christine Tran

Review

“Chandler-esque metaphors dot the narrative….Hunt executes well…the character of Vasquez, her sibling tensions and her existential struggles.” ―New York Times Magazine

“Sometimes, a crime novel grabs you on the first page with its plot. Sometimes, it's the writing. Rarely is it the author's background. But in 'Cuts Through Bone'..., Alaric Hunt hits the trifecta in his debut. Hunt, a native of Kentucky, has been serving life in prison in South Carolina for arson and murder since 1988. In 2010, he looked through a copy of Writer's Market in the prison library and saw a listing for the Private Eye Writers of America contest. The result was his victory for best first private eye novel. And what a novel....Hunt, absent from the outside world for a quarter century, infuses this novel with strikingly rich descriptions of his characters and settings....'Cuts Through Bone'...shimmers with intelligence as it melds the beautiful with the profane. A work of keen originality by a writer of profound power, Hunt's debut offers moving testimony that steel bars can imprison the body but not necessarily the mind, nor the heart.” ―Jay Strafford, Richmond Times-Dispatch

“Hunt's enticing investigators invite a series, and the red-herring-riddled gumshoe story explodes into a climax rivaling those of Robert Crais and Ridley Pearson.” ―Booklist

“Despite its modern touches, Hunt's down-and-dirty debut harkens back to Sam Spade and other classic private eyes.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“Debut author Alaric Hunt has a winner in Cuts Through Bone, a deeply compelling and colorfully gritty detective thriller with a truly unique pair of private detectives. Plot development is intense as Hunt ratchets up the tension to an explosive ending.” ―Fresh Fiction

“Get ready for one helluva ride. Cuts Through Bone is one hardboiled rip, heavy on Noo Yawk color, slam-bang action, and a breezy, slang-filled style that isn't afraid to strut its stuff.” ―Mystery Scene Magazine

“The plot is great. The vast amount of secondary characters is very accomplished....The last scene...is impressively written....[Hunt] says...he does not crave fame, and fortune is largely irrelevant, but that writing is emotionally satisfying. 'When I am writing a novel, I am outside this place,' he says. I have a feeling this impressive 'new' talent will be outside that place often in the future, putting down words that henceforth will have a place to go: a home, in a book, in a world that sometimes feels like a dream.” ―Curtis Dawkins, BULL

“Alaric Hunt delivers a tour de force in his debut outing, complete with a great pair of PIs and a gritty view of New York City guaranteed to astonish even those who swear they know Manhattan. Oh, did I enjoy this book!” ―William Kent Krueger, New York Times bestselling author of Ordinary Grace

“Cuts Through Bone delivers a memorable detective duo on a breathless chase for a killer with a haunting motive.” ―Julie Kramer, national bestselling author of Shunning Sarah

“Cuts Through Bone demonstrates why PI novels are always in style, especially when they feature a detective team you won't soon forget. You can't fail to enjoy this book. It is engrossing front to back. Alaric Hunt has the magic touch.” ―John Lutz, New York Times bestselling author of Pulse

“A great big mystery featuring a hard little detective and his tough young sidekick. This book cuts deep and sure.” ―Michael Wiley, Shamus Award-winning author of A Bad Night's Sleep

“Cuts Through Bone grabbed me on the first page, wouldn't let me go, and I was glad for the ride. Vasquez and Guthrie are the kind of characters I'll spend my day with anytime. Pick up this book; this is a series you'll want to be in on from the beginning.” ―S.J. Rozan, Edgar and Dilys Award-winning author of Ghost Hero

“Detective Clayton Guthrie is a middle-aged clone of Dashiell Hammett's classic detective, with the stony heart softened. In prose crisp as Hammett's, with a pleasing lyricism, Cuts Through Bone tells a crackling-good, satisfyingly complicated tale of serial murder and revenge.” ―Robert Knightly, author of The Cold Room and editor of Queens Noir

Smart PI, Feisty Sidekick, Great Title
By Jacqui Murray
If you are tired of the typical thrillers from the usual voices, read Alaric Hunt's debut novel, "Cuts Through Bone" ( Minotaur Books 2013). Aside from the fact that the story deals with detectives, murdered innocents, and the good guys are flawed, there's nothing usual about this book.

The story deals with a gritty older detective who's breaking in a raw new female partner. As luck would have it, a serial murder falls in their laps so her learning curve accelerates and we get to see the many tricks of the trade that made our seasoned PI--Guthrie--survive as long as he has. He is sharp, school-of-hard-knocks smart, which he probably got from the author himself who's serving a life sentence in South Carolina. The plot, too, is smart, and complicated. Hunt cleverly peals it away like an onion, never too fast that you miss the fun or too slow that you want to stop.

That's not what will make you read this book, as appealing as the two characters and the plot are. It's the author's voice. It's so authentic, I don't know what he's saying 10% of the time. His scene descriptions put me right there, crawling through the sewers, sweltering in the New York heat.

So what don't I like? There are a few complaints I could make about most young new writers. First, the story's choppy. Part of that is because Hunt's writing style is jumpy. Not stream of consciousness, but definitely not smooth. He tries to weave the backstory into the plot and runs into a few bumps. Second, Guthrie has an astounding number of friends who owe him favors. Every time the story hits a snag, Guthrie comes up with a friend in high places who bales them out. Is that realistic? Maybe. Not sure. Third, there are oddly-phrased sentences. See if you agree:

* Guthrie's shot squeezed in between the lighter bullets like a zesty piece of roast beef sandwiched between two slices of plain light bread
* "You were doing something there that could get somebody shut up."
* As the afternoon declined...
* Steady running earned grudging passage from the trees...

By the way, I love the backstory on the title. I won't give it away, but think 'rich', 'historic', and 'worth waiting for'.

Because of newbie mistakes, I'd probably give this 3.5, but that's not available, so I'll round up. Alaric--you owe me half a point in your next book.

Interesting book and interesting author
By Sandy Kay
You don't often read on a book jacket that the author is serving a life sentence -- that made me almost as interested in the author as I was in the book.

This is a first novel and the winner of a competition for first private eye novels. In many ways this book feels like an old-time hard-boiled private eye book. But Clayton Guthrie isn't one of those barely making ends meet hard luck detectives. He is on retainer from moneyed clients and has a reputation of being a good detective. The odd thing is that he doesn't work alone, he has a new apprentice who is a young beautiful Puerto Rican woman. Young pretty apprentices is apparently a regular feature because other characters often ask about his previous one. The other odd thing is that he (or Rachel Vasquez) drives everywhere, even in Manhattan -- because few people who grow up in the city learn to drive and because it usually is faster to take the subway because of traffic.

Guthrie is hired by one of his wealthy clients to determine whether Greg Olsen killed a Columbia student who is a family member of the client. In between and as part of the investigation, Guthrie is teaching Vasquez how to be a private eye. The investigation takes them from Ivy League university campus and the clubs where privileged young people party to the realms of homeless people deep under the city, up and down the length and breadth of Manhattan and into the outer boroughs and beyond.

There are some idiosyncrasies in the writing that take a little getting used to. Most of the time Guthrie is referred to as "the little detective" or something similar. I'm thankful that Vasquez didn't get the same treatment but much of the book seems to be largely from her point of view so perhaps that is how she thought of Guthrie. Also, later in the book one discovers where Guthrie came from and I was surprised because that didn't come through in his speech patterns.

I was fully engaged in the story for most of the book, though towards the end I thought the action got a little far fetched. (Or maybe I just didn't really get the killer's motivation enough.) For a first novel I thought it was really very good. I hope the author will continue writing.

I was curious (not to mention as little concerned about praising this book if it turned out he was a cold-blooded intentional killer) so I looked up the circumstances behind the life sentence. Apparently he and his brother, in their older teens, set some fires to distract from a robbery and someone died in the fire which makes it felony murder and thus the life sentence. Stupid senseless waste of lives but I felt better that the death wasn't intentional even if the action that lead to it was.

Promising but lacking
By Neal Reynolds
Actually I recommend this novel because it did have a promise and fulfils some of that romise. The "short detective" does have enough of the Sam Spade and Philip Marlowe characteristics to keep the reader interested. And the plot itself is rewarding. I did get tired of the author's continual referral to the main character as "the short detective", but that's a very minor criticism. Other than that, I find little to criticize. However, I didn't find it to be above the 50/50 level of novels featuring classic noir type PI's. Even telling much of it from the young female protoge's viewpoint didn't elevate it that much.

The thing is that the book just plain misses something that would lift it out of mediocre. Nor can I truly identify just what is missing. However, I did discover a clue which, for me, explains just what undefinable quality is lacking.

The author is serving life in prison. We're told no more about him, and I couldn't find out any more from Google. However, I feel that the missing ingredient here is recent experience in real life. My theory is that his excommunication from normal life as we know it is subtly and unknowingly reflected in his writing just enough to cause him to withhold a certain living and breathing essence from his writing style. And so what could be an above average modern noir just doesn't quite make it.

And I think that's too bad, because the talent and the basic good idea is there. I honestly enjoyed this enough to want more, a continuation of the two primary characters. So while I felt this first installment to be lacking I do recommend it. This might not be one of the best PI stories you've read, but it is relatively good and enjoyable enough for mystery fans to read. And hopefully there will be more.
