The Story of an African Farm (1883) marks an early appearance in fiction of Victorian society's emerging New Woman. The novel follows the spiritual quests of Lyndall and Waldo, who each struggle against social constraints in their search for happiness and truth: Lyndall, against society's expectations of women, and Waldo against stifling class conventions. Written from the margins of the British empire, the novel addresses the conflicts of race, class, and gender that shaped the lives of European settlers in Southern Africa before the Boer Wars. This Broadview edition includes appendices that link the novel to histories of empire and colonialism, the emergence of the New Woman, and the conflicts between science and religion in the Victorian period. Contemporary reviews are also included.

Haunting Charm and Pathos

I happened upon "The Story of an African Farm" at an indoor flea market in Amish country; strange because I seldom browse books in such places any more, seldom finding anything worthwhile. I picked it up for some reason, maybe the title or its look. I read the brief preface and fell for the author who wrote that, read a few pages, and was hooked.

"The Story of an African Farm" is a strange book, and deep; very deep at times, with many penetrating insights and pithy observations. Most of its charm, and there is much of that, comes from the setting, the easy, compelling depiction of its principal characters, and the appealing natures of three young persons, Waldo, Lyndall, and Em, children at first, a boy and two girls. There is much to be explored in "The Story of an African Farm", much to be savored and enjoyed, and much to be pondered and learned from it. In the end, a fascinating, haunting novel.

The first third of the book tells a simple story, mostly about the charming children, their simple-minded adults, and an isolated African farm, completed by a dastardly, but three-dimensional, villain.

Next we embark (some years later) on a series of "events", some direct digression from the author, some imagined and metaphorical, some real, which largely relate the personal life philosophy developed by the authoress, through the lives and thoughts of the children. First, a rather charming discourse on religion from a developing-child's viewpoint, followed by an allegorical restatement of same. These are exceedingly well done, and succeed by charm of tale in being emotionally compelling ... providing the sorely-needed complement to dispassionate logical critiques. This discourse (and some later musings) rings of Left-Hegelian influence, but apparently never met Stirner. A pity, because this might have led to a happier philosophy and a happier life for this individualistic author, and her characters.

And lastly, a much less appealing feministic lecturette, unfortunately through one of the hitherto more appealing characters, which is long on the familiar one-sided diatribe, women (meaning the upper crust, intellectually, of women) want and are unhappy and it is all men's fault. The author appears to be unaware of any evolutionary perspective on this subject and its overriding implications, but then this is also resolutely ignored, for obvious reasons, throughout feministic "history". Not unexpected for a female intellectual, and authoress, of the times. However, this feministic diatribe is somewhat ameliorated, and even lampooned, when, after it has ended, the lady quickly undergoes a schizophrenic transition and calmly resumes her feminine persona and bearing, with all its presumption of feminine privilege and perquisite.

From here, we again pick up the main storyline of the three young people, each of whose life is about to change dramatically, and see also the return of the original charm, which we have long awaited and hoped for. This last third of the book sketches their subsequent lives, trials and tribulation, and "victories" over the next two years or so, and serves as the book's denouement. I will remain mute concerning this part of the book, lest I relate too much; only saying that it is provocative, filled with pathos, and well worth the wait and the read.

Three more things to say about "The Story of an African Farm" generally:

This is mostly a philosophic novel, mostly about Loneliness, about its forms, and its consequences. Set on a lonely, isolated African Farm, Lyndall is an orphan, as is Em essentially, while Waldo has his father, but lost his mother long ago. The children have, largely, only each other, and are very close, yet they are so different, one from the other, that in a very real sense they are isolated even from each other. .... Those who try to style this book as a feminist novel, an attack on Boer society, or an attack on religion, do it a great disservice; and belittle it; it is much more than that.

There is no philosophical denouement to the book, for the authoress (historically, apparently) never discovered the answers she was seeking herself, and hence had none to relate. The book is left open-ended in this regard, with only a few oblique possibilities explored or tentatively offered, all of which show obvious inconsistencies, of which the author is well aware.

"The Story of an African Farm" can be read, enjoyed, appreciated, and much-reflected upon (since one is "left hanging" in several regards) afterward with pleasure, and left at that. --- However, to really finish this book, and bring it to full value, one must complete it for oneself. This means, primarily, rooting out the real philosophical, psychological, source of, and solution to, Lyndall's "dilemma", and its twin horns. This is not so easy, because the author sketches only the conundrums and the miseries experienced (undoubtedly autobiographically, at least in part), the tracks of the beast so to speak, and in offering some tentative possibilities, only muddies the water, it seems. Finishing the book thus, bestows Unity and Completeness on the novel, and thus, as Waldo alone discovered, Beauty. ... And with that, "The Story of an African Farm" rests easy on the mind, haunting us more gently.

A ground-breaking novel, deeply felt and deeply moving. The central section is didactic -- this would not be tolerated in a modern novel, but this was written in the 19th century. Nevertheless, it is relevant in the 21st.

Memorable, fascinating literature

Very insightful story and plot. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The characters are memorable and the storyline just continues to thicken and grow more intriguing as you read.

The story begins with the main characters as children. Waldo, Lyndall and Em were perfect comrades for each other as they grew up together on an African farm. After becoming adults they tend to go their separate ways, but they always come back home.

Dramatic book you will not readily forget. I would recommend for High School literature and for adults.

An Incredible Character-Driven Work

Do They Know I'm Running is absolutely outstanding. It is a beautifully written, at times lyrical, work which tells a universally human story of family, love, and loyalty against a backdrop which is not only timely, but which is also important to know more about.

David Corbett vividly paints the picture of the terrible price involved in trying to cross the Mexican border into the United States. And he does so in a way which informs without preaching.

A real highlight of David Corbett's writing is his characters. Every character is fully fleshed out and fully real. Every one of them has his/her own well-written history, which informs the present, and his/her own distinctive voice. Some of these histories, such as Tio Faustino's, are told through anecdotes which are beautiful standalone vignettes. And one example of how complex and multi-layered his characters are is that the rancher and his wife, who appear for less than 20 pages of the 450-page book, have a a whole heart-breaking story of their own.

I highly recommend Do They Know I'm Running, as well as David Corbett's other three books--The Devil's Redhead, Done for a Dime, and Blood of Paradise.

Do Thrillers Come Any Better Than This?

Wow. If there is a better thriller out there, someone please let me know. Like "No Country for Old Men" (which I love) but with better characters, sharper writing, and a more convincing and compelling plot. This is the "other side," what gets lost in the immigration debate; it's the story of real people, broken but somehow still hopeful, lost in the shadows chasing that impossible American Dream. Corbett doesn't sugarcoat, doesn't placate, and isn't interested in playing by "commercial" rules. His characters are both ugly and beautiful, capable of extreme selfishness and sacrifice, almost in the same breath. In short, they are real. The book tackles immigration, terrorism, and patriotism, and somehow does so in an understated way. It's the story of a couple Mexican cousins, Happy and Godo, who've fought in a hypocritical war only to return banged up and unwanted, and who put their new "skills" to use to fix their fractured family, sending the darling baby of the family, Roque, across the border to fetch his uncle who's been deported. How tough could it be? Pretty d*mn tough. No one, nothing are what they seem. From the double dealing US government to the unspeakable inhumanities of the drug lords and cartels on the human smuggling pipeline, "Running" plays out like a frantic game of hide and seek, taking the reader down Mexico's dusty roads and into the cracks of an America many will never see. With an ending that is spot-on perfect. As flawless as it gets. And Corbett even manages to squeeze in a love story that cuts and lingers long after the book is put down. And what makes "Running" such a rare treat is the writing itself, which too often in mysteries is relegated to an afterthought. Here, the prose reads poetic and poignant; it's lyrical and rhythmic, stark and illumining, with lines that will break your heart. If this novel doesn't win major awards or isn't optioned into a Blockbuster, I lose what little faith I have left in the arts. "Do They Know I'm Running?" is the real deal, the best book you will read all year.

Do They Know I'm Running?: A Review

This is an excellent novel--very well written with memorable characters and a gripping tale of human trafficking along the U.S.-Mexico border. The story focuses on an extended family of immigrants, some of whom are legally in the U.S. and others of whom are not.

The central character is Roque Montalvo, a talented young musician. The family is living a hard-scabble existence in California when Roque's uncle is arrested by immigration agents and deported. This throws the family into crisis and Rogue, who is an American citizen, is charged with the responsibility of going to El Salvador and smuggling the uncle back to the U.S.

In the meantime Roque's brother, a damaged veteran of the war in Iraq and their cousin struggle to raise the money that will be necessary to pay the gangs, corrupt police and others who control the human smuggling route that stretches from El Salvador through Guatemala and Mexico before reaching the U.S.

Inevitably, things go wildly amiss for everyone involved and tragedy piles upon tragedy. This is not a book that will raise your spirits and leave you with a happy smile on your face. But those readers who would appreciate some insight into the problem of illegal immigration that goes beyond the simple-minded sloganeering of some politicians and others, will find this an eye-opening book.

Read in tandem with Don Winslow's great book "The Power of the Dog," the two books will break your heart and will convince you that the politicians haven't a clue when it comes to dealing with the complex problems that bedevil the southern border of the United States.

This inexpensive facsimile reproduces the extremely rare 1794 edition of Steuben's drill manual, published in Boston by I. Thomas and E. T. Andrews. It describes in detail the arms and accoutrements of officers and soldiers, formation and exercise of a company, instruction of recruits, formation and marching of columns, disposition and firing of fieldpieces, laying out of a camp, inspection, treatment of the sick, reviews of parade, and other essentials. The volume is further enhanced by reproductions of the eight copperplates from the 1794 edition and an Appendix (the United States Militia Act of 1792).

It is an actual copy of the original printing. von Steuben is often called the Father of the modern Army, due to his contributions to our training readiness at Valley Forge encampment 1777-1778.([...]) Required reading for new recruits in the Continental Army of his excellency General George Washington!

Incredible historical document

Von Steuben's drill manual is of extrordinary importance for several reasons.

At the shallowest level, it is a primary source for Revolutionary War and War of 1812 reenactors. For 34 years, (1778-1812) this was THE book for the U.S. Army, so any reenactor interested in this period should start here.

Pertaining to the history of the U.S. Army, this was the first manual, the first set of standards in place in the army. The first of anything sets the tone for later developments, and any serious research about the U.S. Army or Army doctrine should start here.

As an enduring framework, the "Instructions" section is still echoed in U.S. Army leadership doctrine. The roles, responsibilities, and relationships of officers and non-commissioned officers haven't changed that much, especially when compared to the changes in tactics and technology in the intervening centuries. A regimental commander's "first and greatest care" should be "the preservation of the soldiers health", "A captain cannot be too careful of the company the state has committed to his charge", "the discipline and order of a company" depend upon the non-commissioned officers. All these ideas ring true whether the army was outfited with flintlocks or thermal-sighted gas-operated selective fire rifles. This continuity is of tremendous value to the spirit of a successful army.

This manual was also the instrument of a military transformation for the U.S. Army. Von Steuben arrived at the Continental Army's encampment, and popular legend in the U.S. Army is that he was so shocked by the lack of discipline and disorder that he sat down and wrote the first copy of this manual that very night. This is not true, as mentioned in the publisher's note, but by bringing military discipline to the Continental Army, a bunch of farmers and store clerks were able to turn the tides and defeat the premier ground forces of the era. Again, a significant event in the history of military science as well as American history.

As a fencer, I was a little disappointed. Although in the first chapter it mentions that officers and NCOs are to be armed with swords, there is no further mention of the use of swords. Other than this one shortcoming, this was a very enlightening book about the period, and is an influential manual with continuing significance to military science and U.S. Army history.

Excellent tool for understanding focused discipline

I bought this book for the sole purpose of reviewing discipline in military organizations. Being an AF First Sergeant, it re-focused and validated many of the methods still used today. An excellent way to see how history can be a valuable tool in teaching and leading.

The only down side is the dry reading. The english language has progressed leaps and bounds since the Revolutionary War.

Anyone is free to write to our authors in care of Llewellyn. After we published Earth Power, author Scott Cunningham was deluged with letters. Most people wanted more "advanced" material. Of course, this was basically impossible. The natural magic Scott wrote about was simple and direct. Scott couldn't write a more advanced version, but he could write more. And that's exactly what he did in Earth, Air, Fire & Water.

Even though the first book still sells well (150,000 people use it), we didn't want people to have to buy it in order to understand this book. Therefore, Scott made Earth, Air, Fire & Water complete in itself.

That means with this book you will learn all of the basics of magic, including what you need to know to make the magic really work for you. Then you'll learn the importance of the magical elements and rituals and techniques you can do that are based on this information. This is followed by information on nine different types of natural magic that you can do for any purpose.

But my favorite part of the book is the last section. Here you will learn how to combine the information on the elements with the information on the basics of magic to create your own rituals for any purpose you can imagine! He gives over forty examples so you can see just how easy it is to design a ritual.

Scott also covers how to determine the best time to perform the ritual; how to combine the words of power or rhyme for the spell; gives a list of magical symbols; a selection of mail-order suppliers so you can get all of your magical needs; a glossary of the specialized words used in the book; and an annotated bibliography so you can know what other books you can get to further your knowledge. This is an outstanding book, and one you should have.

About the Author
Scott Cunningham practiced magic actively for over twenty years. He was the author of more than fifty books covering both fiction and non-fiction subject matter; sixteen of his titles are published by Llewellyn Publications. Scott's books reflect a broad range of interests within the New Age sphere, where he was very highly regarded. He passed from this life on March 28, 1993, after a long illness.

MORE than 5 stars!

This book is among my favorites in my Pagan library. I have had it since it was published and have over the years bought several copies. It's either been referred to so much it's fallen apart or has been borrowed and never returned. The brilliance of Scott's teachings are that he teaches only what's worked for him but he gives permission to you as Practitioner to evolve into your own Witch - you can tweak the spells so that they work for you and he applauds that and suggests that you do just exactly that. I have always had nothing but respect for the man and his writing - and am sad that he's no longer in this world to write more and share more of his wisdom.

This is a great book to give to a new witch, one who is just starting out on their path and also for those who're perhaps more jaded and have been on their path for decades and maybe needing a reminder as to why they stepped onto this way in the first place - there's inspiration in these pages.

Also, the illustrations by Robin Wood make me want a coloring book of those pictures as well!! Stunning work all around!

Cunningham is great at writing helpful guides for beginners on the path of the Goddess. This book is no exception. The spells are simple and the ingrediants are easily found. No climbing to the top of a maple tree to get the highest leaf to throw in a stream running east. =P Don't you hate that?! ;) This book is a continuation of Earth Power, but you don't have to read that one first. This book has instructions for doing spells using each of the elements. There are also spells that use snow and stars which is rather unique. Also, there is a chapter at the end on how to write and perform your own spells! This is refreshing because it truly does help when your own energy goes into your rituals. I would also recommend Wicca: The Guide for the Solitary Practitioner by Cunningham. It is still my favorite of all time for beginners. Best of luck on your journey, and Blessed Be!

Scott Cunningham Does it Again

Earth, Air, Fire, and Water is a follow-up to the book Earth Power. Both are comprehensive guides to simple folk magick, which doesn't require elaborate ritual but for those who crave ritual can be easily incorporated. But the two books are not clones, nor is Earth, Air, Fire, and Water simply a padded re-release or sequel to Earth Power. They use a similar setup, and cover the same topic, folk magick, but Earth, Air, Fire, and Water is almost wholly new. It covers some of the topics discussed in Earth Power, but encompasses a range of new or related topics. Earth, Air, Fire, and Water is indespensible among Cunningham's volume of works. If you want a comprehensive guide to folk magick, and have read Earth Power (you should start with Earth Power), then Earth, Air, Fire, and Water is definitely for you. If you haven't read Earth Power, then do, and then come back for this one, you will learn, be entertained, and probably recommend this and other Scott Cunningham books to friends before too long.

About the Author
Robert J. Kane is Professor and Director of the Criminal Justice Program at Drexel University in Philadelphia. Kane has conducted field research in New York City, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC; and he has worked with justice authorities in England, Ireland, and the Netherlands. Among multiple social scientific articles, chapters, and reviews, Kane is the co-editor of the forthcoming book, The Oxford Handbook on Police and Policing (Oxford University Press). Kane holds a doctorate from Temple University.

Clear and fascinating to a non-academic

"Jammed Up" is absolutely not an "expose on dirty cops" or anything lurid like that. It's a scientific paper rewritten for The Rest of Us. But that's not to say it's boring. Suggested by a friend, Jammed Up was a fascinating read on many levels. A quick read will provide fun facts and lingo about policing in general and the NYPD in particular. For me, TV and movies provided abundant footage behind my eyes as I read about the different scenarios where cops go astray. The authors know this, and start by citing the movie Serpico, then transitioning to a number of case studies about real cops. These are referenced throughout the remainder of the book, giving a powerful human touch to what otherwise might have been too analytical. I think you could ignore the science entirely and come away with a better appreciation for what a strange and separate society a police force is. I could clearly see how hard it might be to stay honest in that job, or even define what "honest" means.

Then there's the huge labor involved in the authors' study: taking tons of mushy information gathered by real people on paper forms in a huge and political bureaucracy over a period of decades, deciding where to draw the lines and attach the labels, entering and crunching the data and finally suggesting actionable conclusions. For me it was a very thought-provoking introduction to the complications of quantifying real life. In these days of Big Data where every move we make is statistically analyzed, Jammed Up gives a concrete example of that kind of analysis.

I recommend this book as a refreshing break to fiction or popularized non-fiction. Jammed Up is the opposite of many analyses of our society that start with a conclusion, then pick the data to support that conclusion. The authors suggest conclusions which are suggested by the data, but they don't seem to overstep or preach. In fact, in concluding and looking forward, Kane points out that proactive steps based on this analysis of Bad Cops are probably not the same as those which would identify and encourage Good Cops. Here he brings up some important questions and suggestions that reminded me of the classic management adage: "Measure what you want to improve."

...bad guys are good guys...good guys are corrupt...real bad guys are dispicable!

The bad guys are the good guys, the good guys are corrupt...and the really bad guys are purely devient...what's a reader to do?!

I missed the first book in the series, "Mickey Take", and that might be the reason I found the prologue a little slow the first time I read it (although, when I re-read it, I found it much more relevant); but from the first page of the first chapter, the action very quickly gained momentum.

The introductions and backstories of the protagonist(s) are realistic in that, in real life, everyone has admirable characteristics as well as, sometimes, serious character flaws.

Herb Long (the first good, bad guy...that is to say, not exactly your most law abiding citizen, but certainly no thug) is shown to have an inescapable sense of right and wrong, even if his 'business' is a bit left of the law.

As far as "Jam" is concerned (the second good, bad guy...but who is the primary character), I was able to relate to him in a personal way, having known a number of young men like him, in 'the hood' where I once lived. Tough as nails (a bit thuggish, and a boxer to boot), bitter and bent on revenge concerning a childhood experience where his best mate was beaten and degraded...and yet with a heart of gold...you can't help but stand in his corner and cheer him on; every action he takes is understandably fitting and forgivable, especially because of his sense of loyalty to that childhood friend, Jabba, a young man who is 'slow' since birth.

Mac is just tough. He's in Herbs employ, a situation that appears to have a significant history. It is inferred that Mac is Herb's main enforcer. And yes, I agree with another reviewer...Mac can scare the daylights out of you!

Siobhan was the only character about whom I felt slightly cheated; I just wish I knew her better. Her character is like one of those people who waltzes into your life and then, just as you're really beginning to form an attachment to her, she stops visiting! A personable waitress, she meets both Jam and Herbert in the cafe where she now works, after having given up her training as a nurse (this turn of events is explained...and, at the last moment, has no small significance).

As an aside: one of my very favourite aspects of Mr. Hayward's writing style in this book is in the manner of Jam's and Jabba's dialogue...it is written "in dialect", and I could actually 'hear' them speak. Not every writer is capable of the spelling, syntax and appropriate punctuation that realistically portrays the various dialects of any given language. Hats off to this author for a job well done!

A very short summary: Herb, a gentleman to all practical appearances, seems to be in the midst of a shady operation, for which he needs a lookout...a watchguard, per se, although he has a few enforcer(s ?) on his payroll...to insure his orders are being followed.

Jam, who is, initially, a labourer working on Herb's house, stands up to Mac when he (Mac) starts bullying him and his constant companion, Jabba; tough Mac suffers a wee bit of humiliation when tough Jam proves himself to be more than a match during the ensuing altercation! It is at this time that Herb offers Jam the change of position...and we start wondering if Mac will let bygones be bygones.

It is also at this time that we begin to be introduced to the violence and perverse nature of the true criminal element of Riggs...a sadistic man who gets pleasure from forcing the most horrific pain on his wife, has at least one cop in his pocket through blackmail and who also, unbeknownst to Jam, has in his employ the last bully who assaulted Jabba as a child.

I will not go on...you need to read this book yourself. But be forewarned, it doesn't have the ideally happy ending that seems to be on the way!!

And speaking of the ending: I know there will be another followup, but I wish there had been a bit more detail on Jam's incarceration and Herb's influence or actions to help him.

Thanks so much to Steven Hayward for providing this ARC of 'Jammed Up' so that I might review it. It is a book with anger inducing violence, "Awwww!" inspiring, budding romance ( j-u-s-t enough to make it interesting) and heart racing action.
