Challenging the "received wisdom" about U.S. manufacturing

Almost all of the published materials that you read about business these days is circular - people repeating the conventional wisdom and selling it as insight.

But in this book Hal Sirkin and two of his Boston Consulting Group colleagues take a contrarian's point of view and challenge accepted "truth" that the decline of manufacturing in the U.S is inevitable. By projecting the latest trends out a few years (their target is 2015) they show that the same financial analysis that drove the move to China will start to move in favor of North American manufacturing - both Mexico and the U.S.

The authors predict that we will start to see a significant about of "onshoring" of production ...moving factories closer to home.

The best section of the book for me was the "math" about the actual numbers involved in the skills gap for U.S. manufacturers. We are certainly short of the highly skilled (and paid) welders, tool and die makers, etc. that are needed to make modern manufacturing work - but the authors convinced me that this is a problem that is fixable, not a national crises. The chattering classes continue to see this as a huge impediment to the American economy (see today's NYTimes for more handwringing about the shortage of welders in U.S. manufacturing). But the actual number of workers involved is not very large ...and certainly fixable if some of the authors' common-sense recommendations are followed.

All in all, a very stimulating read that will lead to some interesting debates in boardrooms across the U.S. ...and quite a few factories in China!

Sorry -- This book is WRONG!

As a victim of globalization, I am always thrilled by any optimistic news that says the manufacturing jobs might be coming back. It won't impact me, but I would love to be able to encourage my grandchildren to consider careers in manufacturing, or in services related to manufacturing.

Unfortunately, I discovered some "flies in the ointment" when reading this book.

1. The assumption that U.S. workers are three times as productive as Chinese workers and that it takes three times as many Chinese workers as U.S. workers for any particular manufacturing job is wrong. It appears that U.S. workers are more productive because all of the labor-intensive jobs are being done in China, while most of the work that remains here is highly-automated. There is no other reason to assume that U.S. workers are more productive than Chinese workers.

2. Mr. Sirkin claims that goods with around 25% labor content will be re-shored as Chinese wages catch up to U.S wages. Pray tell, what are the other elements of product cost? Material? Overhead? Energy? Compliance costs? Do we really believe that China has no cost advantage in these components too? A goodly portion of material cost is labor cost. A major portion of "overhead" cost is management and engineering salaries.

3. Our labor costs were driven up, initially, by competition and by some bloody labor strikes. Do we really believe that the Communist Chinese government will tolerate lengthy labor strikes? Tiananmen Square, anyone?

4. Has Mr. Sirkin considered the barriers to entry for U.S. companies to get back into manufacturing? The industry where I spent much of my career, decorative lighting, had accumulated decades of knowledge about the design, engineering, material procurement, facility design, planning and operation of plants employing upwards of 1000 people. They had, over the years, built up extensive product lines to satisfy the broad range of customer demands. All of that is gone. It was all gone by 1995. The older people have retired, or died; and the younger people, who should have been acquiring that knowledge, have been working at BigBoxMart. I stopped teaching Industrial Engineering at a university in 1998, after ten years, because there was no longer any market for what I was teaching.

5. Our government has always played an adversarial role toward manufacturing. By piling on taxes and regulations, our government made it more and more difficult for manufacturers to stay in business. When our government "opened the back doors" with NAFTA and the WTO, manufacturers ran into the "loving arms" of Communist China. Most had no choice. They could remain as part of the supply chain, or simply go out of business.

6. The "progressives" who are running our government, our media and our popular culture, will never allow manufacturing to return. It took them fifty years to drive it out of the country. When states start offering tax incentives to companies considering start-ups, they will scream "CORPORATE WELFARE!" Springsteen will write songs about corporate exploitation of workers and the Meryl Streeps and Jane Fondas will start making anti-corporate movies again.

7. I have no idea what is driving Mr. Sirkin and Boston Consulting Group to take this position. Paul Craig Roberts, in his book "How The Economy Was Lost," says that the jobs are NOT coming back. He says the ". . . free market shills on the payroll of the U.S. Chamber, N.A.M, and think-tanks that are recipients of grants from transnational corporations are whores aligned with the elites who are destroying the American work force." P155.

8. In my opinion, our only hope for bringing back the manufacturing jobs would be to impose "Balanced Trade," as recommended by Warren Buffett in 2003. You can Google it. Despite Buffett kissing Obama's ass for all these years, there is no indication that Obama has any interest in seeing U.S. manufacturing jobs return.

I gave this book one star, both to draw attention to my review and to punish Mr. Sirkin and Boston Consulting Group for misleading the American people. If I were not aware of all the misinformation in the book, I might have given it five stars.

Opinion and anecdotal. Limited presentations of data.

While an enjoyable and thought-provoking read, the dominance of opinion and deferral to anecdotes limits this book to arming the reader to be a provocative cocktail party guest.

While accepting the authors' hypothesis based on my own experience as a division manager of a Fortune-500 manufacturer of industrial goods, the lack of research data makes it difficult to determine if our experience is unique. For someone without experience one is left to wonder how much energy and effort should be devoted to the book's prescription.

I look forward to reading the authors promised works based on future research.

Good but onesided view

This is a book that contains a variety of different games that are supossed to be instructive. Some of the games are interesting and some are rather boring. The author takes on the side of the winner, showing with exclamation points the brilliant moves, but not the weaker moves when they are made, except by the losing side. Often a good defense or better move was available that is not pointed out. Personally I like this author's other book "Logical Chess Move by Move" and "Unbeatable Chess Lessons for Juniors" much better that show the ideas behind every move and doesn't seem to take sides.

This is still a good book, but very biased toward the winner of each game that effects the quality of the analysis.

Easily one of the best books ever written. This is one of the first books I purchased over 30 years ago. I am sure it helped start me on the road to Chess Mastery.
Chernev, like Reinfeld, did NOT write chess books to impress other Chess Masters. He wrote books simply and with great care. He also put his tremendous love of the game into this book.
I simply cannot convey what a wonderful book this is. This book will especially appeal to the average player, especially someone who wants to improve his game.
I usually don't rave about books. This is an exception.

About the Author
Becca Stevens books have grown out of her work as chaplain of St. Augustine's Chapel at Vanderbilt University, and as founder and director of Magdalene, a residential community for women with a criminal history of drug abuse and prostitution. Her work with Magdalene has earned national attention and spawned both a cottage industry, Thistle Farms, and related programs here and overseas.

To date, she has raised nearly $13 million and gained nationwide press coverage for the organizations she supports. She has won numerous awards from organizations including the Frist Foundation and the Academy of Women in Achievement. She has been named the "Alumnus of the Year" by the School of Theology at the University of the South, "Nashvillian of the Year" by the Nashville Scene and "Tennessean of the Year" by The Tennessean. In October 2011, she was recognized as a "Champion of Change" by the Obama White House. She has written a number of articles, is a widely traveled speaker, and has both a blog and podcasts available online at www.beccastevens.org. She lives in Nashville with her husband, Grammy-winning songwriter Marcus Hummon, and their three sons, Levi, Caney, and Moses.

In God's Timing; More Will Be Revealed

I have read all of Becca Stevens' books. I bought five to give as gifts at Christmas. I was going on faith because I still grieve my father who died in 2010. When I had told Becca back then she had said she had never heard of anyone dying from greif because I felt I would. I had remembered her speaking of her mother's death, the dogwood in her front yard as memory, and an eight hour bath. I read the book and found it comforting. What I did not know is how it would impact the lives of those I gave it to. The first was an English friend I adore. At the time I wrapped it, I had no idea, she would lose her last sibling in England, a brother, Christmas Eve. She ended up in the hospital unable to attend his funeral due to the necessity of oxygen. The second was a author that lives a few streets over I met by chance in a antique store. She had written a powerful book about losing her father and she was still greiving. I wanted to comfort her though she was a stranger so I left the package on her doorstep. The third was another freind I cherish who recently shared she was going to have her fourth child. She has been extremely sick. The beginning of the book speaks from the Bible, where God blesses Jacob and says I have called you by name. Her first born is named Jacob. He is six. She lost her grandmother this past Monday whom she was close to. The fourth I gave to a senior couple who mourn that their grandchildren being so far away and their inability to be closer. I think it is amazing God works with such precise synchronicity. Becca has a powerful ministry, but the fact that God works through her art and words gives faith a new dimension of power personally. I then learned a close childhood mentor died in 2010. I mourned him, but having read the book and seen its ministry at work in other's lives I could greive with a new understanding. That being that we all must greive, even Jesus and God greived and it is our responsibility to use this common factor to form community and faith. Not only that, it is our job to stand with the greiving and walk through the valley knowing it is only the shadow, for there will be life and renewal through God's promises. Thanks, Becca, for another touchstone for those in need of comfort. I was one of them.(E)

Megan Crewe (www.megancrewe.com) finds writing about herself much more difficult than making things up. Exciting Middle Novel

Another fantastic novel from Megan Crewe. There was certainly no second-book slump for this series as it was just as exciting as the first!

One thing I really loved about this novel was that it is a journey story. It's an excellent follow-up to the more stationary beginning of the trilogy because now Kaelyn and her group of friends are on the move across a mainland ravaged by the same virus that struck their island. The constant movement meant things were constantly changing and new problems were arising, which kept the excitement level up all the way along.

The atmosphere of this novel was extremely well done. There is a major sense of emptiness and desolation both on the island and across the mainland, which served to heighten the feeling of danger when it arose. There was also a lot of tension in this instalment of the series, especially with the introduction of a new character who clearly doesn't think before he acts and risks their lives on more than one occasion.

Speaking of characters, it was great to finally see Leo in person as opposed to just hearing about him through Kaelyn. I also really enjoyed seeing his relationship with Kae for the first time, even when they struggled with where they stand with one another. It was great development for the story. Kaelyn was, as in the first novel, brave, strong and determined, which makes her a fantastic leader for the group. It was also great to continue having Gav around though, especially when Kaelyn loses her head. Gav is a wonderful guy, but he frustrated me on occasion because he was just so darn selfless. It's a great quality for him to have, especially in the kind of world they're now faced with, but the boy needs a stronger sense of self-preservation!

All in all I loved the direction the storyline went in The Lives We Lost, and I appreciated how the environment and situations really tested the group so we get to see more of their character. It was an excellent example of how to avoid an underwhelming middle book in a trilogy.

Great second installment in a fascinating series - no sophomore slump here!!!

The Lives We Lost was just as captivating as Way We Fall, The (Fallen World trilogy, The). If you haven't read The Way We Fall yet, stop reading this right now and go order a copy of that book first. This isn't a series that I would suggest jumping into in the middle of it. From the moment I read the synopsis of TWWF I knew I wanted to read it. I am fascinated by the spread of deadly viruses and I enjoy reading nonfiction books like The Hot Zone: A Terrifying True Story and Virus X: Tracking the New Killer Plagues, so I was incredibly interested in reading a YA fiction book with the same topic. This series is much more realistic than many other YA books in this genre because no one turns into a zombie or monster from this disease and it could really happen. Viruses like this have taken hold of the world in the not-so-distant past, which makes these books scarier to me than any fiction horror story.

The Lives We Lost starts off right where TWWF ended. Kaelyn and her handful of friends (and her cousin) from the island that have survived the virus has also torn across the country, and probably the entire world. She finds her dad's key to the research center and discovers a vaccine he was in the process of testing when he was killed. Since there is only one doctor on the island and she is unable to test and duplicate the virus, Kaelyn and her friends decide to leave the island in search of a doctor who can help her replicate the virus. They encounter many horrific situations along the way and the worse it got, the more I found myself cheering them on and hoping that they would find the person that could help them.

Kaelyn is one of my favorite heroines. She is not naturally an outgoing person, but she is caring, selfless, and brave even when she is afraid. I have read so many books with wimpy, whiny female main characters lately so Kaelyn was an absolute breath of fresh air. She has been through so much and never gave up, not when she felt she could possibly help others out.

I waited until The Lives We Lost were out to read The Way We Fall so that I could read straight through to the second book, but now I have to wait almost a year until the third book is out! I am so bummed, I can't wait to read the third installment of this series! I would recommend this series to everyone. :)

Must Read Series!

There are quite a few sophomore series books releasing this year, but this was one that I was so looking forward to reading! I loved the first book in the series, The Way We Fall, so much that I had to pre-order this one. In this second book, the story focuses on Kaelyn finding samples of a possible vaccine that her father had created and venturing off the island with her friends to find someone who can reproduce it. Then hopefully the vaccine can be administered to those that have survived thus far. An innumerable amount of people have suffered the effects of the virus and eventually succumbed to their deaths. So while they are trying to find a scientist, doctor, or researcher who could do this - among the vicious population of people that are left doing what they can to survive - Kaelyn and her crew are doing what they can, themselves, to survive and avoid contracting the virus. This is all happening during the winter by the way. They're freezing cold, constantly having to find shelter and food, avoid marauders, and trek countless miles in the snow. Oh and also another thing - Kae has to ensure that the vaccine is kept at an optimum temperature in its cold storage box. It can't get too warm or too cold (that it freezes) or it could be worthless and their efforts would have been for nothing.

Talk about a survival story! I thought the amount of overwhelming challenges and obstacles they met were realistic and was glad that they weren't often presented with lucky breaks. I think their bit of naiveté in the beginning was necessary for them to quickly learn the nature of their situation and the behaviors of their fellow survivors. It hardened them and helped them to become extremely cautious, but they were still able to retain their sense of humanity. I think if you haven't read the first book in this series, you wouldn't be too lost just reading this story, but you would definitely have to read the third book if you want to know what happens in the end with Kae and the gang. I read the first book right after it came out about a year ago, so I forgot some things, but this second book had just the right amount of recap to refresh my memory and put me back into Kae's world. I would recommend that you do read the first book though since you will have more sense of the relationship between them all - Kaelyn, Leo, Gavin, Meredith, and Tessa. I freaking love the book cover. I also love the first and (pending) third book covers for this series and love how pronounced, consistent, but different they are. I love this series and I'm impatiently awaiting book three to be released!

About the Author

Harry Jackson founder and Chairman of the High Impact Leadership Coalition (HILC), Bishop Jackson has declared that the church and its leaders must lead the way to protect America's moral compass and heal our nation. His radio commentary "The Truth in Black and White" can be heard daily on 400+ stations nationally. In addition, Jackson was also named one of the top 50 most influential Christians in 2005 by the Christian Post. Jackson has appeared as a guest on The Tavis Smiley Show, Tony Brown's Journal, The O'Reilly Factor, Britt Hume's Special Report, National Public Radio, CBS Evening News, BET Evening News, 700 Club, TBN (Trinity Broadcast Network) and CBN News. He has been featured in articles in The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, The Baltimore Sun, The Washington Times, The Philadelphia Inquirer and The Chicago Defender. Tony Perkins is President of the Washington, DC based Family Research Council. He is a former member of the Louisiana legislature where he served for eight years, and he is recognized as a legislative pioneer for authoring measures like the nation's first Covenant Marriage law. He was a Republican candidate for the United States Senate in 2002. Since joining FRC in the fall of 2003 he has led FRC to aggressively continue their work affirming and defending the Judeo-Christian values that this nation is founded upon. Tony hosts a weekly national radio program, "Washington Watch Weekly," and he also sends daily updates to tens of thousands of grassroots activists. An effective communicator, he regularly appears on national broadcast and cable news programs. In addition, he has been a keynote speaker for organizations across the country. A veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, and a former police officer and television news reporter, Tony brings a unique blend of experience and leadership to the pro-family movement. He received his undergraduate degree from Liberty University, and is currently pursuing a Master's Degree from LSU in Public Administration. In May 2006 he received an honorary doctorate from Liberty in Theology. Tony and Lawana, his wife of 21 years, have four children.

Bipartisanship Can Exist!

This book is written by two men who come from very different backgrounds. One is a Republican the other a Democrat, but some how they have managed to do what the House and Senate have not been able to do for years, agree! Despite their different backgrounds both Jackson and Perkins present very clear and practical resolutions to seven issues that are before the heart of every person of faith: preserve and protect life; reform immigration; alleviate domestic poverty; cultivate racial harmony; protect religious freedom; defend marriage and family; and protect the environment. These men don't waste the readers time with political rhetoric, their book is not overwhelmed with scriptures from the Bible that leave the reader over powered, and their certainly is not a leaning towards the right or left; rather they presented the problems along with resolutions. In the end the reader is faced with the pivotal choice to administer change in our society. This book is instrumental for the life of every American and will effect and provoke our society to change if we choose to apply the resolutions presented before us. My fellow Americans, it is not the election of a President that is going to change our situation it is the understanding that America has always had a government of the people, by the people, and for the people. We the PEOPLE must be the orchestrators of change! Pick up your copy today and begin to initiate change for our country.

Great Read For This Year's Election

Amazing---a black Harvard grad meets up with a white leader of a pro-famioy organization and voila...who would know they could not only agree on something but define positive ways to address the issues facing the U.S. today? This has just enough research and info to make it credible, but not boring and just enough scripture to give the issues framework, without making it totally opinionated. Evey voter should get a copy and pass it around their office!

Not too careful with the facts, ma'am

177 page children's book, age 10 or so, I guess. Full of really bad illustrations for a kid's book. They look to be watercolor, and so blurry and sketchy you can hardly make out what they portray. Written in 1962. It talks about Napoleon having a spy in the U.S. in 1792, which I find hardly credible, although admittedly I am no history expert. The French Revolution was only three years old. Napoleon was probably still in Corsica then. Which leads me to believe there may be other factual errors. All the towns Bakeless names in Montana are not in the road atlas today. Not sure I learned anything except that the Missouri is our longest river. Was too suspicious of the facts.
