Anyone interested in autobiographical writing is adviced to read it

This is an astonishing book; one of the first serious studies about the genre of autobiographical comics. In it, the author shows how this literary form (comics, graphic novels) definitely influences the way in which an autobiographical story is told. I found this really fascinating, because it means that authors who use comics or graphic novels can really tell different stories in comparison to traditional autobiographical writing. El Refaie's arguments are more than convincing, and I can only recommend this book very strongly.

Fascinating!

This book is an intelligent, well researched and clearly written exploration of autobiographical comics. I was already a great fan of this newly emerging genre, but this book has helped me notice and appreciate even more the wonderful ways in which graphic novels tell their fascinating stories. A book that gives us plenty to think about, whether we are academics, writers, artists or readers of autobiographical comics (or any combination of these). I can't wait to see how this genre evolves over the next decades - this book is a great companion along the way!

Jh. dramatisch. Eliten konstruieren im XIX. Jh. eine exklusive Identität, und es ist das Ziel, zur Essenz der eigenen Identität wieder zu finden, um sich vom „Anderen“ abzugrenzen. In diesem Bezug haben Quebec und Irland vieles gemeinsam- in beiden Fällen darf England als der „Andere“ herhalten; in beiden Fällen will man seine eigene Authentizität in der Sprache (Gälisch und Französisch statt Englisch), in der Religion (Katholizismus statt Protestantismus) sowie im Traditionalismus (Abkehr von der Modernität) wieder finden. Die Essenz der eigenen Identität zu wahren bedeutet jedoch gleichzeitig, sich vom „Anderen“, vom Kolonialherrn, abzuwenden.
Da „Identität die Primärform der Ideologie ist“, laut Adorno, ist es einleuchtend, dass diejenigen Elemente, die die Vision von einer gälischen und katholischen Identität Irlands, respektive die einer französischen und katholischen Identität Quebecs, nicht teilten, fern gehalten werden mussten.

Die kommenden Generationen interpretieren daraufhin, in Quebec wie auch in Irland, ihre Vergangenheit neu und konstruieren ein neues Bild, indem sie mit Elementen wie Imaginationen, Traditionen, Ideologien, Religionen, Symbolen, Lebensstilen, Sprache und Erinnerung operieren, mit dem sie sich angesichts der „expérience contemporaine“ identifizieren wollen.

In diesem Geiste möchte ich in der vorliegenden Arbeit die filmischen Identitätsbilder Irlands und Quebecs, zuerst einem diachronischen Schema folgend, mit Schwerpunkt auf die letzten 40 Jahre sowie auch einzelne identitätsstiftende Faktoren (Oktoberkrise, Nordirlandkonflikt, Sprache und Film, Revisionismus
u. a.) herausgreifend, anhand von repräsentativen Filmbeispielen miteinander vergleichen, um auf dieser Weise einen summarischen Reisebericht der Identitätssuche der beiden Gesellschaften fest zu halten.

Dazu würde ich gerne, wie Ian Lockerbie, den Film zu einem Spiegel der Identität machen, denn nichts gibt meiner Meinung nach das Kollektivgedächtnis einer Nation besser wieder als der Film, als „instrument qui nous permet de retrouver des points de repère dans l`évolution de la société et de lire les tracés les plus importants du rêve collectif“ (Fulchignoni) oder als Leitmedium, in dem dieser identitätsstiftende Diskurs stattfindet.

"Uncertain Fate" by Ken Casper was the last in this series 'The return to Caddo Lake Trilogy' which was a good read. "Nineteen years ago, Frannie Granger disappeared . . ." Now, we know from the other series that the secret is out but still their remains "who is responsible for what happened on her last hectic morning so long ago?" Jed Louis who is heir to the plantation house and the oldest of the three foster children that were raised by Frannie is thought to be guilty by the sheriff for what all has taken place. Now, this is where I say you must pick up "Uncertain Fate" to see how this will all turn out. If you are into a good mystery series 'The Return to Caddo Lake Trilogy' will be a good read and I would definitely recommend "Uncertain Fate" as a good read because it is the ending of this series.

Unexpectedly good

I was not prepared to like this series as much as I did. The idea of three different authors is risky to me - seems easy to lose continuity. Fortunately, that didn't happen here. All three books are well-written with developed characters and a good plot. I barely noticed the change in voice. As a matter of fact, it worked really well with the introduction of a different main character in the subsequent books while still carrying the plot throughout all three.
I would be very comfortable recommending this series to fans of romantic mysteries. For less than $20, a person can purchase all three Kindle books. I'm betting they're like potato chips - you can't read just one!

Introducing Darkover

If Marion Zimmer Bradley had not written Sword of the Aldones or The Bloody Sun the entire Darkover series could not have been written. They were written by a young writer back in the early Sixties to fit into the Ace Double format, two short novels printed back to back meant to be read by people traveling by train, bus, and prop plane. These two novels managed in less than 400 pages to create a series that became a voice for New Agers, feminists, gay rights activists and the left ot adolescent, while providing happiness, entertainment, and the occasional hard thought to a couple of generations of Science Fantasy readers. If these two and The Planet Savers had not worked we would have all been the poorer for it.

Another early tale

While this book, and another of the same exact time exist, each is different. While I enjoyed both of these histories, this one is easy to tell as the earlier book. The MZB magic was just starting to form, but it's still a great tale. I'm happy she chose to rewrite this narrative later on, as it does fill in more of the blanks than this one did.

I read this just because I wanted to get the whole overview of MZB's Darkover world. To be honest I think you can skip the first two published books and go from there. These books are more sketches and a young writers experiments rather than the finesse and development of her later books.
