Snow termed the two-cultures of humanists-social scientists and scientists-engineers. Nadeau has previously published nine books and numerous articles that cover a wide variety of subject fields on both sides of the two-culture divide.

A loud shot across the bow. Nadeau makes a strong and articulate case for changing the way we think, see, and interact with the only world we have.

A great transition book

Nadeau knows that we are in need of a new grand narrative and he provides it. As he is at home in both culture studies and quantum physics, he does an excellent job of joining the religious function of providing a large framework (cosmologica) to our personal life stories to replace the worn out "world religions" that are no longer believable. His ecological orientation also puts the kabosh on the current libertarian market fundamentalism that wants the US and global public to believe that unregulated indiviidual pursuit of unlimited wealth should be embraced because "pursuit of self-interest promotes social good" . Or as Gordon Gekko (in Walstreet) put it - greed is good. Classical physics is the basis of the "old story" while quantum physics is the basis for the "new story". Even though Nadeau uses the revelations of quantum physics (whose predictions have been 100% correct), his presentation is clear, accessible, and well written. The two dominant discourses that still rule our politics and ethics are market fundamentalism and religious fundamentalism which have become structures of evil. As they are both faith based, actual events can be ignored and papered over as trivial or momentary because these believers possess God's revealed Word or God's presence in the "invisible hand" that polices and restores market imbalances. Neither of these beliefs pass factual testing. We need, as David Orr points out, to remake the human presence on earth in ways that work over the long haul. This endeavor should harmonize the human enterprise with how the world works as a physical syatem and how it ought to work as a moral system. Nadeaus' book helps to form a new grand narrative into which we can meaningfully plug our own personal life story.
