Same book different title
By R. Thomas
This book was very well-researched and written and I enjoyed it tremendously; however, last week I received a copy by the same authorAll You Need to Be Impossibly French: A Witty Investigation into the Lives, Lusts, and Little Secrets of French Women As I sat down to read the book, much to my astonishment and disappointment, I quickly discovered that I had already read this book under the title . While I truly enjoyed I found this to be somewhat disconcerting. Evidently this same text has been published by two different publishers with two different titles.

I did enjoy the text when I read it the first time under the title so yes I do recommend the book even with two different titles.

Get Real! Not Peter Mayle's "A Year in Provence"......
By dessert
Very readable about expat life in French village. The author lives in Languedoc Rousillon unlike Peter Malye who lives in Provence. She was from England and moved to a small French village with her husband and kids.

She has a good knowledge of French bureaucracy: utilities, buying property, social security and points out accepted social behaviour required of interacting with the local French. What strikes me is her sincerity to integrate as fully as possible into French life instead of living on the sidelines like Peter Mayle also an English author of "A Year in Provence" who seems more like a loafer and a parasite feeding off the French.

As the author is a young mother she tries her best to get her kids integrated in French schools to get a better start as being French. Three quarters of the book is full of anecdotes about family life in a small French village. The last quarter deals with French officialdom, the whys and hows of dealing with the nitty gritty of it.

Oh, pleeeeaaaase
By Gypsy
Sheesh... I've been living in Paris for about 7 months and got this book from another ex-pat. I thought it would be fun. I think it was really an excuse for the author to meet well known French women and get into exclusive/expensive stores. I found most of it to be pat, over generalized, contradictory and highly stereo-typed. The book describes a small percentage of French women, primarily the elite, but not necessarily. The average french woman is not as different as the book would have you believe. Yes, there are some truths in there: you will rarely see any french people, male or female, wearing sneakers unless they are on their way to or from some form of exercise. Yes, you will rarely see clinically overweight people, male or female. I think the author should have focused more on her own experiences and generalized a lot less. Peter Mayle did a much better job on this and his books are much more enjoyable.

Concerning the Spiritual in Art (Dover Fine Art, History of Art), by Wassily Kandinsky

A pioneering work in the movement to free art from its traditional bonds to material reality, this book is one of the most important documents in the history of modern art. Written by the famous nonobjective painter Wassily Kandinsky (1866–1944), it explains Kandinsky's own theory of painting and crystallizes the ideas that were influencing many other modern artists of the period. Along with his own groundbreaking paintings, this book had a tremendous impact on the development of modern art.
Kandinsky's ideas are presented in two parts. The first part, called "About General Aesthetic," issues a call for a spiritual revolution in painting that will let artists express their own inner lives in abstract, non-material terms. Just as musicians do not depend upon the material world for their music, so artists should not have to depend upon the material world for their art. In the second part, "About Painting," Kandinsky discusses the psychology of colors, the language of form and color, and the responsibilities of the artist. An Introduction by the translator, Michael T. H. Sadler, offers additional explanation of Kandinsky's art and theories, while a new Preface by Richard Stratton discusses Kandinsky's career as a whole and the impact of the book. Making the book even more valuable are nine woodcuts by Kandinsky himself that appear at the chapter headings.
This English translation of Über das Geistige in der Kunst was a significant contribution to the understanding of nonobjectivism in art. It continues to be a stimulating and necessary reading experience for every artist, art student, and art patron concerned with the direction of 20th-century painting.

a classic about color and form as spiritual symbols
By A Customer
Kandinsky spent a lifetime painting in search of the spiritual. His body of work was his philosophical opus, provoked initially by the prodigious philosophical works of Madame Blavatsky, founder of the Theosophical Society, in which she introduced the Western world--and Kandinsky--to Eastern philosophies. Kandinsky believed that art had a duty to be spiritual in nature, an expression of "inner need," as he came to call it. He called "art for art's sake" a "vain squandering of artistic power." This book was both his call to artists to meet their obligation to humanity and his attempt to define and explain color and form in its relation to expressing the message of the soul.

The philosophical breaktrough that lead to abstraction
By C. Collins
All art students are advised to read this short masterpiece but I suspect few young artists take the time to read the book that best explains the concepts that lead to abstract painting in the modern era. I think it would be useful if I pointed out some of the most important and interesting themes and ideas that Kandinsky explains so tht you can see the vast range of this short 80 page book.

First, Kandinsky was greatly influenced by music and recognized that music was judged under different standards than was painting. For example, music is not judged by how much the music sounds like noises in nature. We would never go to a symphony to hear the musicians imitate dogs barking, or ambulance sirens, or police whistles. Yet painting is judged by how well the painter reflects the natural world in a realistic style. Thus for Kandinsky, the ability for painting to lose the object, would free painting to pursue the spiritual. However, the ability for the painter to paint without painting the object is very much a challenge. He gives advice to the read on the use of line, form, and color to try to achieve this goal. But Kandinsky recognized how fragile this makes the painting process, for any brush stroke or color or shape can evoke the material world again. Kandinsky wishes the artist to free themselves from the material world so that they can express their inner impulses. Thus the abstract painting requires contemplation to reveal its meaning. Furthermore, the meaning may be a projection of the inner life of the viewer as much as it is the inner life of the artists. This concept is not new to music but it certainly was new to painting in 1911. Now we hear about the Rothko chapel in Fort Worth, where large abstract paintings by Mark Rothko create a meditative space for contemplative viewers. The spiritual aspect of abstract art is now a given in our culture, no longer a radical idea.

Second, Kandinsky has very insightful comments regarding his contemporaries. He recognizes Matisse as the 20th century master of color and Picasso as the 20th century master of line but he faults them both for not making the final step toward complete abandonment of the physical world. For example, he points out that even though Picasso developed the collage and Cubism, that Cubism is deconstruction of the physical world but not abandonment of the physical world and thus Picasso remains earth bound.

Third, Kandinsky asserts that imitative painting of other eras was a deadly trap for the artist, yet responding to the eternal call of the unconscious forces in an earlier period of art history was a valid area of exploration. His example is Picasso and other artists interest in the primitive. These artists did not wish to copy the primitive works but to respond to the same unconscious content that the primitive artist had tapped.

Fourth, Kandinsky believed that art progressed, that artistic concepts built on each other and that there was a triangle of artistic conception that moved forward to some end point, yet to be discovered. This concept of progress in art, similar to the idea of progress in science, and not related to such cultural values as progress in fashion has lead to much debate in the post-modern era. It is interesting to read Kandinski's opinion on this topic and reflect on the last 100 years to see if he could be correct or mistaken. I prefer to think that the progress is the continued exploration of the human unconscious, an infinity of symbols and images connecting us to our spiritual base.

Fifth, Kandinsky believed in a conceptual hierarchy in the world of painters and he thought only a few make it to the top of the pyramid where a few create truely unique solutions to visual problems. The others are imitative or formulaic and form the base of the pyramid.

Sixth, Kandinsky warns against pattern painting since he thinks this leads to monotany and away from spirituality. In this regard contemporary artists have certainly challenged his conception. In fact, Agnes Martin, the minimalist pattern painter, is regarding as a great spiritual painter. In my opinion, Kandinski would have loved Agnes Martin's paintings. The examples of pattern painting he gives in the book sound more like the patterns on wall paper more than the minimal grids of an Agnes Martin painting.

Finally, after all the explanation of why an abstract painting style should evolve and how artists can achieve that style, Kandinsky makes the linkage between the outer world of the painting and the inner world of the viewer with a quote from Meterlinck "The soul is curious for beauty."

Every artist owes it to themselves to read this short book on which so much art history, philosophy, and practice has been based.

Invaluable historical document; challenge to the future.
By darragh o'donoghue
The 1910s was surely the most exciting, radical, innovative and genuinely NEW period in the history of all the arts, writing, music, painting, cinema, dance. it was also one of the few periods when creative frenzy was escorted by critical might, and is almost as famous for its artistic collectives, its '-isms', its iconoclasms and its spectacularly aggressive, wipe-the-slate-clean manifestoes as it is for any one artwork produced.
Today, however, there aren't many of these manifstoes that possess more than quaint historical value. Kandinsky's 'Concerning the Spiritual in Art' is one, and probably to our own shame, speaks as loudly to us today as it did to the artist's contemporaries. A cry against all that is bogus or a dead-end in art - the bourgeois-currying; the trend-following; the excessively materialistic, naturalistic or representational; art in which formal invention is not matched by emotional power - the book demands a return to spirituality in art in an age where a godless faith in science has resulted in a soulless culture.
Kandinsky is the artist who said that 'Art was close to religion', and his concept of painting is heavly bound up with his Russian orthodox upbringing (as well as later exposure to theosophy). One does not have to be a card-carrying mystic, however, to recognise the truth of his central argument, that the only art with the power to truly move us is that which is ruthlessly faithful to the artist's inner need, not public taste or contemporary styles.
this belief led Kandinsky towards abstraction: he rejected the idea that a painter should draw what was on the surface, instead of its inherent spirit or harmony (if this led to a cul-de-sac in 20th century art, this is because Kandinsky's mimics lacked his moral drive). This book is fascinating as Kandinsky, still creating recognisably (though distorted) representational works, was struggling towards the abstract geomotry for which he is now famous. It is essential for any lover of Kandinsky's work, and modern art in general, with its revealing analyses of colour and form, their 'psychology', and the various effects they can achieve. it is a portrait of modernism from the inside, and it is goosebumping reading a gifted contemporary passing judgement on Picasso and Matisse, although time has parted company with him in his preference for Maeterlinck and Isadora Duncan.
In his demand for a total art that would unite theatre, music and painting, he looks forward to the great Ballets Russes happenings, most significantly Nijinsky/Stravinsky/Picasso's 'The Rite of spring'. Throughout, he calls for painting to achieve the non-naturalistic liberation of music.
But behind the passion and certainty is an intellectually playful (not always caught by the fusty translation), though deadly earnest artist, who knows that everything he says is provisional and a guide, a record of his own groping, striving, tireless searching.

The Ball and the Cross, by G. K. Chesterton

Like much of G. K. Chesterton's fiction, The Ball and the Cross is both witty and profound, cloaking serious religious and philosophical inquiry in sparkling humor and whimsy. Serialized in the British publication The Commonwealth in 1905-06, Chesterton's second novel first appeared in book form in America in 1909, delighting and challenging readers with its heady mixture of fantasy, farce, and theology.
The plot of The Ball and the Cross chronicles a hot dispute between two Scotsmen, one a devout but naive Roman Catholic, the other a zealous but naive atheist. Their fanatically held opinions—leading to a duel that is proposed but never fought—inspire a host of comic adventures whose allegorical levels vigorously explore the debate between theism and atheism.
Martin Gardner's superb introduction to The Ball and the Cross reveals the real-life debate between Chesterton and a famous atheist that provided inspiration for the story, and it explores some of the novel's possible allegorical meanings. Appraising the book's many intriguing philosophical qualities, Mr. Gardner alerts readers as well to the pleasures of its "colorful style . . . amusing puns and clever paradoxes . . . and the humor and melodrama of its crazy plot."

The battle between Christianity and atheism
By Guillaume
As a Catholic I had heard of this little story for years, but only got around to buying it last night. I read it in one sitting. This is a story of two Scots -- one a staunch Roman Catholic, the other a militant atheist. The Catholic is enraged by the blasphemous display in the latter's shop windows and an vicious row ensues. They are both hauled away by the police. But it does not stop there. They agree to fight a duel. But where? Each time they think they have found a perfect spot, they are interrupted. Eventually, after some further adventures, they realise that they -- the one who actively accepts the existence of God and the other who actively denies it -- have more in common with each other than with the mass of self-satisfied humanity who could not care less if He exists or not. This is a brilliant story, and a perfect allegory of our sad times.

Faster, Higher, Cooler
By Gord Wilson
So many people wrote great reviews of GKC's best-known books here that I'll concentrate on this one. It happens to be my favorite novel by him, but I was quite surprised that this nearly unknown book would be so good. My suggestion is don't read Martin Gardner's foreword first--read it as a backword, after the book, and then see if you agree.

I am editing this review because Amazon won't let me review the book again. The Martin Gardner introduction is in the Dover edition The Ball and the Cross. There is a new, 2015 illustrated edition from Chesterton Press which is slightly abridged (very slightly from what I can tell), and has black and white full page illustrations by Ben Hatke in each chapter, along with little Chesterton-like sketches at the ends of the chapters. It's a 9 X 6 inch paperback with larger print and more white space. The blurb on the back cover calls The Ball and the Cross a 1909 "Steampunk novel", which is the same sense I had when I read it (and recently reread it). The Ball and the Cross. It's frankly dazzling. If you plan to read the physical book, these are the two editions I would recommend.

Chesterton later wrote a little poem about how he didn't like this book, and how it didn't make any sense, but I found it to be the clearest thing I've ever read, and it has forever instilled lucid pictures in my brain. It starts with a scene that seems to be some sort of dizzying science-fiction story from Victorian England--sort of like something Jules Verne would write if he suddenly became a better writer.

That's not the only unforgettable visual image in this book, which is pieced together like so many cliff-hanger serials. Someone else will likely write about all the debates over points of view implicit in the title and fiercely held by the characters, but what attracts me is the excitement of a wildly heroic life (which both characters live). GK shows, of course, that it's found in the romance of orthodoxy, but by the time the book winds up, he has me panting like a thirsty hart to find those cooling streams.

Another novel that does this is Manalive!, which a friend of mine said is her second favorite book, next to C.S.Lewis' Perelandra. Manalive! is very light, but it just flies, and opens with the most intriguing first page I've ever read. Both these stories, although written in different ways, seem modern or even post-modern. They seem like they were translated into modern English from another language, even though they both date from the early 20th Century.

Recently, I had the chance to see the world premiere of a play of The Man Who Was Thursday, which put these three novels into perspective for me. Chesterton wrote at a time when anarchist dynamiters --the terrorists of their day--were causing havoc about London. Many social conditions were chaotic and in the world of ideas, things were up for grabs.

Chesterton did not have an easy conversion, nor did he come by his views without a hard-won struggle. In this sense, he didn't arrive at the "right" answer by working a puzzle or stumbling on the secret to life, but like his story about a man who walked around the world, came back with a new perspective, able to see things in a new way for the first time. Although I did come to embrace his romantic orthodoxy, I don't think his big gift is in convincing us of the wisdom of the Creed, but rather in opening our eyes to the wonder around us.

GKC is a big fat Genius
By Clark Massey
Chesterton's hilarious story of how an adamant Catholic duels to the death with an ardent atheist is a worthy read. Chesterton systematically critiques popular delusions of educated thinking as the book unfolds. Chesterton's wit is second to none and if you liked Pilgrim's Regress by C.S. Lewis, you will love this book.

Jerusalem Delivered (Gerusalemme liberata), by Torquato Tasso

Late in the eleventh century the First Crusade culminated in the conquest of Jerusalem by Christian armies. Five centuries later, when Torquato Tasso began to search for a subject worthy of an epic, Jerusalem was governed by a sultan, Europe was in the crisis of religious division, and the Crusades were a nostalgic memory. Tasso turned to the First Crusade both as a subject that would test his poetic ambition and as a reflection on the quandaries of his own time. He sought to create a masterpiece that would deserve comparison with the great epics of the past.

Gerusalemme liberata became one of the most widely read and cherished books of the Renaissance. First published in 1581, it was translated into English by Edward Fairfax in 1600. That translation has been the standard, even though Fairfax was only a good, not a great, poet. Fairfax tried to fit Tasso's verse into Spenserian stanzas, adding to and subtracting from the original and often changing Tasso's meaning.

Anthony Esolen's new translation captures the delight of Tasso's descriptions, the different voices of its cast of characters, the shadings between glory and tragedy—and it does all this in an English as powerful and clear as Tasso's Italian. Tasso's masterpiece finally emerges as an English masterpiece.

From Library Journal
Published in 1581, Tasso's (1544-95) verse epic on the 11th-century First Crusade and the love of Tancred and Clorinda is one the masterpieces of Italian literature. Esolen (English, Providence Coll.), a translator of Lucretius's On the Nature of Things, here provides a solid verse translation. Despite its importance, Jerusalem Delivered has enjoyed only one significant rendition in English that is still in print: Edward Fairfax's 1600 Spenserian version. Esolen observes the basic shape, rhythm, and rhetorical movement of the original ottava rima but never sacrifices poetry or meaning to rigid form. The result is both highly readable and truer to the spirit of Tasso than Fairfax's rendition. Esolen also provides a valuable introduction, an essay on Tasso's allegory, a glossary of characters, and helpful textual notes to identify allusions. An important contribution; recommended for public and academic libraries.DT.L. Cooksey, Armstrong Atlantic State Univ., Savannah, GA

Review

"What a tale it is!... [Esolen's] notes are full of fascinating and comment and helpful information... These notes, a thoughtful introduction, and above all a winning translation that captures the charms of Tasso's verse should give Tasso the wide audience in the English-speaking world that he has so far never had, but richly deserves." -- Bernard Knox, New York Review of Books

"This is the best way to read [Tasso] at the moment. Do it." -- Colin Burrow, London Review of Books

"Now English readers have available to them Anthony Esolen's readable and accurate verse translation of Jerusalem Delivered. Esolen copes admirably with Tasso's octave stanza... It is not only beauty that Jerusalem Delivered still holds for us. In our time, when the future of the Holy City is contested once again, and sectarian conflicts are on the rise, and a Tridentine spirit, a fear of internal dissent, has returned to the Roman church, Tasso's magniloquent epic still has something to say." -- David Quint, New Republic

"A solid verse translation... Esolen observes the basic shape, rhythm, and rhetorical movement of the original ottava rima but never sacrifices poetry or meaning to rigid form. The result is both highly readable and truer to the spirit of Tasso than [Edward] Fairfax's rendition... An important contribution." -- Library Journal

"[A] much-needed new translation... No one will fail to admire the careful enormity of the undertaking." -- Publishers Weekly

"This new translation of Gerusalemme liberata is a very fine, highly readable version of Tasso's epic about the First Crusade. The Gerusalemme is an acknowledged masterpiece of world literature and a culmination of Italian Renaissance poetry. It is good to have a modern, affordable edition of Tasso in print again, in a fast-flowing English verse that is infinitely more accessible to the ordinary reader than the Elizabethan rendition of Edward Fairfax... Tasso's work is charged with the fiery passion of youth. Esolen's translation captures this fire... A very useful feature of Esolen's edition, besides the notes and index, is a 'Cast of Characters' at the end, where each personage is identified, with words and actions noted for each canto." -- Anne Barbeau Gardiner, New Oxford Review

"Until now, the rollicking story of the heroes, villains, witches and lovers was available in only one modern English translation. Anthony M. Esolen has corrected this shortage in masterful style and his translation restores not only the epic grandeur of the original but also its excitement." -- Daniel Boice, Catholic Library World

"[Esolen] executes verse with art that it rarely intrudes upon the reader's consciousness, and then only to invoke admiration at the accomplishment of both the poet-scholars involved in telling the tale... This edition is eminently satisfying. Because Esolen takes such care to make the text accessible, he offers an excellent introduction to Tasso for new generations of readers, and he succeeds in awakening an interest in the original Italian, as well as in all of Tasso's works, with this translation." -- Karen L. Nelson, Sixteenth Century Journal

"We are fortunate to have Anthony Esolen's new verse Englishing of Torquato Tasso's masterpiece... Thanks to Esolen we now have an English Tasso worthy of use in our classrooms without the sort of fussy apologies that can undermine the experience we are trying to provide our students. In translating the Liberata Esolen has undertaken a daunting challenge and met it handsomely." -- Lawrence F. Rhu, Spenser Review

"Jerusalem Delivered offers a thorough introduction tackling T.'s relationship to Ariosto, his struggle with the problems of truth, authority, and religion, and notes on the characters." -- Year's Work in Modern Language Studies

Review

"Esolen's translation of Tasso is a genuine intellectual and poetic achievement. The accompanying scholarly apparatus makes this the most valuable edition of Tasso available. Esolen has thought through with care what readers need to make their way through the immensity of the poem." -- Thomas P. Roche, Princeton University

Excellent Translation of a True Literary Masterpiece
By A Customer
Most every reader of literature in English is familiar with Arthurian romance and legend, from Malory's medieval masterpiece "Mort d'Arthur" to Tennyson's "Idylls of the King" to contemporary writers like Mary Stewart and Marion Zimmer Bradley.
But how many of these readers are aware that there exists in Western literature another, parallel stream of myth and legend called Carolingian, which celebrates the exploits and heroes of the Age--not of Arthur--but of Charlemagne?
Carolingian epic and romance may safely be said to begin with "The Song of Roland" (available in W.S. Merwin's excellent translation in the Modern Library volume "Medieval Epics"), but the tradition includes scores if not hundreds of contributors--and three of these constitute together a magnificent achievement: Pulci's "Morgante," Ariosto's "Orlando Furioso," and Tasso's "Jerusalem Delivered."
Maybe due to the hyper-popularity of Arthurian material, these three major authors and their respective masterpieces have a shockingly undistinguished and short list of english translations. Happily, Anthony Esolens has supplied us with a truly superb, vivid, and beautiful rendering of Tasso's neglected epic. It is so good, in fact, that I second the reviewer below in hoping for a future translation of Ariosto. For what it's worth, Bernard Knox wrote a highly favorable review of this edition in the New York Times Book Review, in which he called Esolen's work "a triumph." Don't hesitate.

Quite simply a pleasure to read. . . .
By A Customer
Mr. Esolen has done the english-bound reader a fine service: we are drowning in Dantes, up to our eyeballs in Homers and Virgils and Ovids, but where are the compulsively readable and poetically enjoyable modern translations of Pulci, Boiardo, Ariosto, and not least of all Camoes, who has written the most neglected major epic in Western literature, "The Lusiads"! Most thankfully, Mr. Esolen has given us Tasso's "Jerusalem Delivered," which in his magnificent translation is quite simply a pleasure to read--I could not put it down! If you are intimidated by "classic literature," don't be--this english Tasso is just a jolly good adventure/love story. If you enjoy this, and you will, then let's hope Mr. Esolen will favor us with his rendition of Ariosto's "Orlando Furioso" in the not-to-distant-future!!!

War and love in the First Crusade
By Guillermo Maynez
This magical epic poem tells the story of the First Crusade, led by Godfrey of Bouillon and other European noblemen and warriors. The story is full of supernatural characters and events. It develops during the bloody siege of Jerusalem, against the Moors and their famous leader, Soliman. The story is violent and erotic, especially the torrid love affair between Tancred, the bravest of the Christians, and Clorinda, a fierce but beautifl warrioress. Written in the XVI century, this book captures the spirit and ideology of the Middle Ages, specifically the XI century. Like in "Curial and Guelfa", Christian symbols mix with Greco-Roman ones, in a tale of war and sex. Tasso's images are powerful and the poem is anything but childish or naive. As I said, it is violent and full of action. It contains no boring digressions or reflections, but pure action.

Inspirational fiction superstar Kingsbury considers the cost of fame in her new novel, which puts under the microscope the singing competitions that fill television airwaves. Zack Dylan wants to save his family's Kentucky horse farm and sing for Jesus; competing on Fifteen Minutes seems like the answer, but he must leave his family and girlfriend Reese behind. Zack quickly learns that the price of success may be more than he anticipates. He's romantically linked with fellow contestant Zoey Davis, asked to eliminate references to his faith, and sing songs that contradict what he believes. But straight talk from judge Chandra Olson, who paid a steep price for her fame, and hard words from his girlfriend Reese begin to open his eyes. What will fame cost him? Will the price be too high? Can he ever go back? Kingsbury wrings much emotion out of her tale that is sure to cause tears and also force readers to consider their own parts in elevating entertainers into the impossible stature of idols. Rewriting
By Amazon Customer
The last several books starting with the actor son in the Baxters and then the above the line series it has all become fame and fortune with Karen. This book is almost a rewrite of what Brandon went through in the Bailey series. I loved Karen's book in the beginning and wish she would get back to that way of writing. Real life issues. Not fame and fortune. It is like the fame has went to Karen's head and that's all she knows now. I want books that will inspire me. Give me hope. I know that some knight in shining armor that is rich and famous is going to come and rescue me from all the financial problems I have had lately unless Karen wants to do what she writes about and come rescue me. Please Karen come back to earth and write your down to earth life changing novels not things that are out of reach for the people who read your books that struggle every day.

I'm done with Kingsbury
By baseballblondie
Zack Dylan can sing and sing well. When he seizes an opportunity to audition for the hit show, Fifteen Minutes, he takes it. He is determined that he can win and save his family's horse farm. Despite misgivings from those who love him - his family and girlfriend - they do offer him their support. Zack is determined to live out his Christian faith in front of the cameras. But when the producers keep trying to push him towards another contestant and to silence his outspokenness of his faith, will he let it happen? Will a taste of fame cause him to lose sight of who he is?

What can I say about this book? True to classic Karen Kingsbury style, she has written a story that will engross her readers. But like her last several books, this one also deals with fame and fortune. I miss the days when she would write stories that had me in tears. Stories that changed lives. I'm not saying that for some people that this book may be life-changing. I'm saying that for me, the story seemed the same as several of her other books. Just change the names and the settings.

Things I liked about this book -
1. The realness of Chandra, one of the judges.
2. Seeing one of the other judges, Kelly, realize the direction her life was taking.
3. Reese - Zack's girlfriend.

Things I didn't like about this book -
1. That Zack found the little things ok to compromise on. For me it made him seem like he was conforming.
2. The entire storyline of seeking fame. Yeah that didn't sit well with me. It seems that she's been so focused in her last several books in talking about the Hollywood lifestyle that I feel she's lost a connection with her readers.
3. I'm not a fan of the singing shows, so I don't know if this really happens or not. But I found that the scenes set on the show were harsh to the contestants and to the readers. It was like the judges/producers didn't care that they'd just crushed someone's dreams.

I had little to no expectations for this book when I started it. So in that aspect, I wasn't disappointed. But I was disappointed in the fact that this book didn't feel as deep as her others. It felt very much like a formula. I'm sure that there will be readers who love this book and it will be the best one they've ever read. I'm not one of them. I'm sorry.

As a longtime fan of Karen's, I'm sorry, but I'm done. I'll reread the ones of hers I've loved over the years, but I will not read her new releases anymore.

I received the Kindle version of this book for free from Howard Books via NetGalley for the purpose of reviewing. My thoughts and opinions are my own. I was not required to like the book or to write a positive review, just to give my honest opinion.

Recommended to (I don't have a problem recommending Karen's books) fans of contemporary fiction, Karen Kingsbury, Katie Ganshert, JoAnne Bischof

Rating - 2 stars. I debated about this a lot. I went back and forth in my head. It's not a 3 star. It's more of a 2.5 star.

THE STRUGGLE FOR FAME...AGAIN!
By Nana
I couldn't get past the first two chapters. I thought, here we go again. It's all about fame and fortune and it seems like a repeat of earlier books that I didn't enjoy. What a shame that an author as talented should waste this much time on a worthless subject. Maybe someone is getting good out of this type. There are a lot of choices out there in Christian fiction. I will be reading other books. Sorry

From Publishers Weekly
Shalvis's assured third rugged romance about the Wilder brothers (after Instant Gratification) follows TJ—the oldest brother of Cam and Stone—on his expedition of the heart. His destination: Harley Stephens, a blond spitfire TJ's wanted for a long time. Harley, who's recently gotten her degree in wildlife biology, needs TJ's help on a dangerous research trip that may lead to a good job in Colorado, but she won't ask for it. TJ, meanwhile, wants her to stay local and offers her work with his family's wilderness guide company. After TJ lends his support to Harley's expedition, their love for each other builds, but will they be able to make it work? Shalvis tracks their zesty romance with dependable flair, while the majestic Sierras provide a vivid backdrop. (Apr.)

From Booklist
Harley is the only tow-truck driver in Wishful, California, and she has a newly minted wildlife biology degree and an attitude TJ Wilder just can’t understand. When they’re thrown together in Desolation Wilderness—she to check on the status of several coyote groups she’s monitoring, he to make sure she’s safe—their longtime attraction and turbulent past conspire to take their relationship to the next level. Shalvis concludes her fast-paced contemporary romance trilogy (Instant Attraction, Instant Gratification, 2009) with the oldest and least settled Wilder brother’s story, tying up loose ends and inviting the reader along for the adrenaline-laced ride as her characters enjoy white-water rafting, mountain climbing, and other adventures. --Lynne Welch

A Sexy Sweet Romance
By Maria D.
After having read the 2 previous books in the "Instant" series by Ms. Shalvis, I was eagerly anticipating the release of this book and I was not disappointed. TJ Wilder is an extreemly sexy hero and Harley is a fantastic heroine. TJ has never understood why Harley avoids him and why he is so attracted to her. It all goes back to when they were in high school. Harley has never let herself get near TJ because she's had a crush on him for so long and is afraid that they don't want the same things out of life. At the beginning of this book they don't, TJ is looking for something more along the lines of a
temporary romance, he's more of a live life for now type of guy. Harley wants someone who will be with her forever. As they spend more time with each other they realize how much they have in common and also grow to realize that what they think they want out of life...isn't necessarily what they really want. This book has a very satisfying ending and it was fun to see how the series wrapped up. Can't wait to see what Ms. Shalvis writes for us next.

4 1/2 stars - last of the Wilder brothers gets tamed
By Laura B
4 1/2 stars

This is the third in a series about the three Wilder brothers who live in Northern California and run an adventure company. Both of T.J.'s brother have found love and he is the last hold out. He is getting a little annoyed with all the sappiness around the lodge and can't wait for his next trip--they keep him away for months and it keeps him from settling down. Plus, it keeps him away from Harley. He's known her since they were kids and for years they've been arguing and bickering with each other. The thing is, he's been hiding a crush on her most of that time, too. Harley keeps her distance from T.J. just as much. She wants forever and knows that T.J. isn't a forever kind of guy.

Oh my...I loved this book! The other 2 Wilder brothers were hot, but T.J. and Harley just about burned the pages up. The flirting and build up was so fun to read. Some of it was funny and some had me actually feeling sorry for T.J. The coyote story was a bit of a let down and I would have liked a little bit more about it, but it did not detract from the romance between T.J. and Harley.

My biggest disappointment with this book is that there are no more Wilder brothers! Wah! I loved them all and wish there were more to read about. I am going to miss them all as well as Annie--gotta love the Aunt with an Attitude.

I will continue to say that I am a huge Shalvis fan, so I am probably biased, but this really is a good book. I loved the series and was so happy to see T.J. and Harley finally get their book. I recommend reading the other two books first, but it won't hurt to read them out of order.

Praise for Sultry with a Twist:

"Fun and flirty with characters you'll love page after page."—Christie Craig, New York Times bestselling author

"Hilarious, heart-warming, sexy, and real—you'll fall in love, guaranteed!"—Lori Foster, New York Times bestselling author

Welcome to Sultry Springs, Texas: where home can be the perfect place for a fresh start.

For West Coast filmmaker Bobbi Gallagher, going back to Sultry Springs is a last resort. But with her career in tatters, a documentary set in her hometown might be just what she needs to salvage her reputation. She just can't let anything distract her again. Not even the gorgeous contractor her brother asked to watch over her. As if she can't handle filming a few rowdy Texans.

Golden boy Trey Lewis, with his blond hair and Technicolor-blue eyes, is a leading man if Bobbi ever saw one. He's strong and confident and—much to her delight—usually shirtless. He thinks keeping his best friend's baby sister out of trouble will be easy. But he has no idea of the trouble in store for him...

From Booklist
Beckett joins the hoard of authors writing about small Texas towns with hearts of gold. After bombing out in Hollywood, documentary filmmaker Bobbi Gallagher gets another chance from a reality-TV producer to shoot a show about how good old boys try to find love in all the wrong places. Bobbi decides to visit her newly married stepbrother, Luke, in Sultry Springs, Texas, and film his rowdy friends in their bids for love. She’s particularly taken with her stepbrother’s best friend, Trey Lewis, who’s just passing time until he ships out to Dubai, where he will be able to purge his less-than-honorable discharge with a civilian contract. Even though Luke and Trey’s mother disapprove, Bobbi and Trey slowly get closer until Trey’s old fiancée reenters his life. What with getting to know her stepbrother, filming the reality show, and falling for Trey, Bobbi’s life is chaos. Beckett’s foray into love in a small town bounces from funny to endearing to poignant, making her a welcome addition to an otherwise overstocked romance subgenre. --Pat Henshaw

In love with Sultry Springs!!!!
By Kelly
Oh Man!!!! Book two in the Sultry Springs series is SO good. Trey, ahhhh the sweet Golden Boy finally meets his match in a feisty redhead from California. And to say their first meeting was... will eventful would be an understatement.
I loved the beginning, middle and end of this book so much. I read it in one sitting. I kept saying to myself "just one more chapter and I will put down the book and go to sleep" Needless to say at 2 am I finally did read the last chapter, wiped the tears from my eyes and went to bed very happy.
I love these character, love this series and love Macy!!! I so can't wait to see what she has in store for our resident bad-boy sheriff, in book 3 Surrender to Sultry (Aug 1, 2013).

Again if you have not jumped into Sultry Springs Texas you really need too. You will be surprised at what can be found behind the doors of a small hick town.

Love Macy Beckett's small town romances!
By mimi_reads
Macy Beckett totally nailed this book! It's rare to find a story that can entertain me so completely, but A Shot of Sultry did just that. The residents of Sultry Springs are a little crazy, some break your heart, but they all leave you feeling something and that's the connection I was hoping for! Revisiting Luke and Joonbug brought a smile to my face & I loved their interactions with Trey and Bobbi. I don't want to give away too much about Trey and Bobbi, but I will say that their chemistry was instant and holy hot tamales, it was fun to read! I can't get over how well Macy Beckett managed to balance the humor with the emotional heartache in this story. Definitely one of the best books I've read in awhile & I can't wait to read Surrender to Sultry!

Great addition to the series!
By DiDi - Guilty Pleasures BR
I returned to Sultry Springs for the second story in the series, A Shot of Sultry, and I couldn't be more delighted that Trey's story was just as enjoyable as the first book. Her writing is entertaining and funny with endearing characters which make it so easy to fall in love with them.

Trey Lewis is looking to get a fresh start in life and wants to clear his name. He's accepted a security detail job in Dubai for the next two years and in exchange the Army will expunge his dishonorable discharge. He wants to be his own man and maybe starting a company is possible without that blot on his record.

Bobbi Gallagher needs a fresh start too. She's Luke's half-sister, and plans to go to Sultry and film a documentary in order to resurrect her career. Her last film tanked when her reliable source wasn't so reliable and now she is videographer for weddings. She's been asked to film a new reality show and she exactly where she wants to go. It may not be award winning or public awareness material, but it is her foot in the door and a way back into working again. She is going to need participants in her reality TV show and what better place for `redneck' love is to go to Sultry and find some willing subjects. Lucky for her Trey is one of them.

Trey was instantly attracted to her the moment her sees her enter the bar the fun began. Trey thought he was doing Luke a favor and throwing out the skank, but to his surprise his best friend has a sister he didn't know about. And boy is she hot! He may not like the idea of being part of her reality show, filming his love life, but it is a way to be close to her and keep an eye out for her. Trey is just one of those guys that are easy-going, fun and quite the charmer. He's a multi-faced character and definitely one of the best hero characters I've read about.

Bobbi Gallagher has had a rough life and has made great strides to become the woman she is today. She may have a little OCD when it comes to messes and strange coping mechanism but that made her even more real to me. What's wrong with a little organization? LOL. She had a strong façade but underneath she was a girl messed up with need, want and insecurity. It takes time for her to trust, even with her own brother Luke, but she found it easy with Trey to tell him her secrets and for him to just accept. They were good as individuals but they became great as a couple. They complimented each other very well.

The other secondary characters were a hoot to read and get to know especially Colt Bea, the sheriff in the town. He was the other contestant that was followed for the filming and he was a man who was seriously hurting. His story is next in the series and one that I will anxiously wait for its release. The whole story drew me in and was packed with heart and humor. The ending was kind of abrupt and tied up a little too quickly in my opinion, but it nonetheless ended with a good conclusion. A Shot of Sultry is a must read for it made me laugh and was heartfelt.

Good secondary-level textbook.
By A Customer
This reprint of the 1938 illustrated edition of Columbus' journal covers the crossing of the Atlantic from August 3 to October 14, 1492. The (uncredited) translation is from Las Casas' abridgement of the journal in the HISTORIAS DE LAS INDIAS. The note at the beginning of the Dover edition explains the origin of the text. This book would be suitable for instruction with advanced middle school and high school students. It is unfortunate that the text is truncated upon arrival in Hispaniola since it omits many of the interesting passages concerning early contact with the islanders and Columbus' return voyage to Spain

Very good illustrations -- older grades
By M. Heiss
Very good illustrations -- this book includes excerpts from the ship's log of the Santa Maria. It's a good book for showing the courage of the expedition, and also for pointing out how Columbus misled his crew to keep them from despairing. Older grades.

This is fun. I love history and the lengths these men went to to believe that land "was just around the corner" is just unbelievable.

Great peak into the history and the historical voyage across a very large ocean .
