About the Author
Graham Masterton's first novel, T""he Manitou,"" was a bestseller and an instant classic and was made into a feature film. Masterton has won an Edgar Award and France's prestigious Prix Julia Verglanger. Several of his stories have been adapted for television.
Masterton's more than one hundred novels include ""Charnel House, The Chosen Child,"" and ""Maiden Voyage"" (a"" New York Times"" bestseller). He has written for adults, young adults, and children and edited several anthologies. Earlier in his career, Masterton edited men's magazines, including ""Penthouse,"" He has written a number nonfiction books on sex, including ""How to Drive Your Man Wild in Bed,"" which has sold more than three million copies.
Masterton and his wife, Wiescka, live in Ireland.

Smorgasboard for Fiery Fear

Many of Masterton's Stories are like a collection of vignettes, so,the short story collection is great by a
few authors standards, since some writers mangle the art of the short story .Masterton is my favorite in Horror,
and apart from Agatha Christie's [ technically brilliant ] short story work, H.P.Lovecrafts excursions into the
darkside, and Phillip K. Dicks art of perpetual fascination, I knew few skilled short story writers who present in
the way Masterton does. This a brilliant read.

THE PRESS: Possibly the 2nd Shortest and most pressing in this collection.
BURGERS OF CALAIS: Chilling. Enough of recycling !!
ANKA: Another amazing chill.I have come across two other versions of this myth. Masterton does it very
well.
DOG DAYS: Beyond chilling. A theme Masterton goes back to how someone can go back to an impossibly lost love
THE SCRAWLER: Very Urban mythstyle. A british version of a paranoid spirit driven by internal self hate.
SEPSIS: The most intriguing of the Horror in this collection. A love so extreme it destroys ( I have the Cemetary Dance Version of this story in Paperback, which is also signed by Masterton; I have not checked to see if the two versions are markedly different).
CAMELOT: The magic of Mirrors that separate two lovers, and the horror of two that one tries to combine.
REFLECTION OF EVIL: A continuation of the Arthurian theme. Well placed and we see the evil in ancient beauty.
NEIGHBORS FROM HELL: A ghostly experience in search of a ghost. Not clear who has what, but you will enjoy the story.
SON OF A BEAST: A Hybrid needs a way to revitalize the gene pool. Many elements from Lovecraft in this tangibly creepy story.
ANTI-CLAUS: An ancient mythology is shown to have a modern truth
SARCOPHAGUS: A very Horrific two pages.

Mixed bag

Like most short-story anthologies, this one is a mixed bag, with some good stories and some that have an interesting premise but are not fleshed out well. ("Fleshed out" being a particularly well suited description for Masterton's writing, which, as his fans know, is particularly gory.)

As in his novels, Masterton likes to build a story around a mythology, and I, for one, don't know how much of such mythologies he has studied and how much he has made up, but, as the reader, it hardly matters if he can convince us that it's for real. Stories like "Anka" (featuring a witch with an appetite for children) and "Anti-Claus" (featuring Santa/Satan) are particularly strong, with supernatural beings bringing terror unless the protagonist can placate them.

"Dog Days" and "Son of Beast" feature the same kind of inter-species cross-mixing that was involved in Basilisk, which I found to be the weakest of Masterton's novels, and The Sphinx, which was actually a pretty strong novel. These two stories are just too far-fetched to be convincing.

"Scrawler" is a particularly interesting story -- with the main character seeing graffiti all over that seems to be personalized to him.

"Sepsis" involves a couple that becomes obsessed with tasting each other and 'becoming one'. It may remind Masterton fans of his controversial short story "Eric the Pie".

"The Burgers of Calais" is, unfortunately, one of the stories at the beginning of the book, and it's quite obvious where it's going. I think just the title is enough for you to figure it out.

Two of the weakest stories, "Camelot" and "Reflection of Evil", are based on the same theme as one of Masterton's strongest novels, Mirror -- people living in mirrors. These stories are featured one after the other in this collection, which is unfortunate because I was so glad to get through one of them, only to go right into the other, and both were based on a Tennyson poem I've never read before this about "the Lady of Shalott". "Camelot" was slightly more interesting than the other because, although there's no explanation why, there are talking animals and other alternate-reality things going on. (I wondered if the whole society in "Camelot" was on the other side of the mirror, but Masterton does not really explain it.)

And there are some other stories that are okay, not particularly good or bad.

Good book of short stories

I love Graham Masterton's work. He often submits to my magazine, The Horror Zine.

And he never disappoints. Graham Masterton's characters are so well done that they seem real to me. I can understand their behavior and why they think the way they do.

Best of all, Graham comes up with creepy and original scares. He always delivers thrills and chills.

I prefer horror and mystery in the short story format because then I can read one story every night, or even better, take the book on the commuter train and read a story from start to finish by the time I reach my destination. This is why the short story format is becoming so popular nowadays: it is perfect for people on the go or who have limited time.

Anyway, back to FESTIVAL OF FEAR:

"Camelot" is about the Lady of Shallot, told in an erotic way (after all, Graham was once an editor at Penthouse). It is a gripping fantasy. Here is an excerpt:

"It says here that Sir Lancelot grieved for the Lady of Shalott so much that he consulted Merlin the Magician, to see how he might get her back. But Merlin told him that the curse is irreversible. The only way for him to be reunited with her would be for him to be to pass through the mirror, too."

My favorite in the book is "Reflection of Evil." This one is downright scary. Again, it ties in with the Lady of Shallot, but then veers off into another direction. The trio discover a find that could lead to fame and fortune if they can hide it from the Historical Site Assessment. But....

Here's an excerpt:

"She was Lamia. A blood-sucker, a vampire! Like all vampires, she could only come out at night. But she didn't hide inside a coffin all day...she hid inside a mirror! Daylight can't penetrate a mirror, any more than it can penetrate a closed coffin!"

How is that for an original take on vampires?

I recommend FESTIVAL OF FEAR. Not only because it is a good book...but it's Graham Masterton. That in itself makes this a must-read.

It's cheap. You can do better for a few more bucks.

It's about the size of a grade-school workbook. The pictures are confusing and need a bit of interpretation to clarify what the author is getting at.
As an experienced paper folder, I found the designs and the instructions lacking.
As to the beginners perspective, for entertainment on a long train ride with my younger brother, I brought this book and another geometric origami book "Unit Origami" by Tomoko Fuse.
My brother was a complete novice. He first attempted a few projects from "3-D Geometric Origami : Modular Polyhedra." He seemed a bit discouraged through the whole process, however, we were pretty bored so he attempted to complete few anyway. The finished products didn't hold up very well and they didn't look very pretty either.
He was about to give up on origami altogether. I handed him the Unit Origami book, and he took off. He was an origami folding fanatic for the whole week we were staying with our relatives.

A fantastic book for enthusiasts!

I really enjoy this book. It combines the beauty of origami with the principles of geometry. It gives instructions for simple modular origami, telling you how to make the finished shapes as large and complex or small and simple as you like. It gives room for countless variations on the techniques taught here. My friends are amazed when I show them my latest creations and tell them that in one shape there are 72 pieces of paper!

A good guide for those with some previous experience

A good "how-to" book. Diagrams for folding individual modules are clear. Instruction for piecing the modules together to form the models should be more detailed as this can be a frustrating process. Overall, I would recommend the book, but think it's best for those with some experience in piecing these types of models together.

Supernatural Love

A supernatural dating agency - because supernaturals need love too, yo! ;)

The Midnight Liaisons series has been a blast so far. I didn't read the first book (I know, shame on me!) but thanks to a friend's glowing recommendation, I did grab the second one and was immediately hooked on the world Jessica Sims has created. Each book focuses on a different couple, and in this particular installment, we've got Marie and Joshua, two very different personalities who may have more in common than they think.

So what is the book about? In a nut shell, Marie is a human who works for Midnight Liaisons, the aforementioned supernatural dating agency, and she needs to be turned. (Notice I said "needs" instead of "wants to be". That's important - and no, you're not getting any other spoilery type statements out of me!) Unfortunately for Marie, because of the not-so-nice supernatural climate right now, her options of who - or I should say, what - can turn her are limited. But Marie has a plan, and she is determined to execute it.

I loved Marie. She has a delightfully cool and acerbic personality, which was so refreshing, and while I didn't think much of her plan (too many holes in it), it was fun watching her try to carry it out. And more than that, it revealed so much about her character. With each date Marie went on, searching for the right one to turn her, I learned a little more about her, and the more I learned, the more I liked her. She was a very easy leading lady to get behind.

The real star of the show, though, was were-cougar Joshua Russell. What a charmer! He's one of those guys who comes off as just another playboy until you get to know him and discover his gooey center. That's not to say he's a walking wuss-ball - far from it! There's no rolling over and playing dead for this guy. He strolls onto the page, big as life, and pretty much commands every scene he is in. I love it when heroes do that, don't you? He's irresistible and I promise, you're going to end this book gushing over him.

As paranormal romances go, this series is a hit for me. With multiple supernatural races involved, there are plenty of possibilities for future books, and I just plain like the author's style. It's sexy and fun and makes for a quick, enjoyable read. You really can't go wrong here, folks, and I'd encourage all of you to give these PNR books a try.

This novel is the apitame of romance, charming boy meets girl, girl can't stand boy, boy schemes his way into girls heart. Beautiful I loved this story, enough so that I will go back and read the others before this.
I fell in love with josh and his charming ways, he definitely can charm the panties off any woman both young and old. I loved his gentle heart and his persistent streak. I love how he defends his actions to the council in court with 'because I love her.'

Midnight Liaisons, is a dating service for the supernatural. Creatures who have fur, grow fangs and sometimes only come out at night. If you are one of these creatures this is the place to find your perfect match.

The only problem is female shifters are in short supply. And dating humans is strictly forbidden. Even humans who know about the supernatural community are off limits. Especially after a were-tiger turns his human girlfriend without his alpha's approval. Now they have been exiled, turned out by their clan.

So, what's a girl to do? Marie Bellavance has her heart set on being turned into anything not human. At this point she's desperate. She's dying. She has a very rare disease, one that also killed her mother. And she sees having one of these creatures turn her as her only means of survival. But now that the new laws are being passed and no shifter is allowed to turn a human, Marie sees vampires as her last chance.

Joshua Russel is a were-cougar, handsome, sexy, and a bit of a player. He is part of the very powerful Russel clan. His brother Beau, is head of the Alliance that over sees all things supernatural. And he has had his eye on Marie for a very long time. But being human she's always been off limits for him. But now she's putting herself in danger by dating vampires. The White Knight in him just cant let her walk into something she knows nothing about. So he agrees to help her in her search for the perfect vampire. All the while keeping a very close eye on her.

I love this series, each book can be read as a stand alone but I would highly recommend starting at the beginning with Beauty Dates the Beast. They are all very well written, fun and sexy.

Jessica Sims also writes as Jill Myles, and Jessica Clare, if you like this book I think you'll like the other series she also writes. Some paranormal/romance, some are just very nice romantic/comedies (Chick Lit, I call them). They are all great.

More great case studies

In Michael Newton's first two books, Journey of Souls: Case Studies of Life Between Lives and Destiny of Souls: New Case Studies of Life Between Lives, you get to witness his ground-breaking discovery of the existence we live between lives. Through many case studies, Dr. Newton paints a vivid picture of life between lives, shattering many commonly-held beliefs about the nature of God, the Universe and our reason for being.

As editor of Memories of the Afterlife: Life Between Lives Stories of Personal Transformation, he continues the journey but this time through the efforts of 32 experienced practitioners from all over the planet who completed their training at the Michael Newton Institute. Their stories are no less fascinating as they enhance the credibility of the earlier works by repeating and reinforcing this shared glimpse of the afterlife. The case studies represent a variety of life situations, all with the powerful life-changing insights that can only be gained by remembering who you truly are, why you came here and with whom you are sharing the ride.

Although certainly not a pre-requisite, if you haven't read Journey/Destiny of Souls I recommend you do so as these classics will explain things in a bit more organized and detailed fashion and will help fill in the blanks. MEMORIES OF THE AFTERLIFE is more unfettered and assumes at least a passing belief in life between lives rather than trying to prove it. I found it to be an excellent complement although it surely stands on its own as a fascinating read full of information and insight. I also found an interesting phenomenon absent in the earlier books - that you can get direct guidance about present situations from the LBL world while seemingly experiencing past events, showing that our concepts of past and present really don't extend beyond our limited physical reality.

If you are stuck in the belief that you have one life in which to get it right and then it's either heaven or hell for eternity, then this book probably isn't for you. If you are open to a belief in multiple lives (along with the majority of people on this planet), then I highly recommend this book as it will help shed some light on the age-old quest regarding the nature of our immortality.

Connecting the dots

I have had many experiences in my life where I knew there was guidance from the beyond. For those who have never had experiences of being guided or picking up the subtle messages sent to us (a sixth sense, etc.) it might be hard to understand what is being explained in this book. Basically, earth and our incarnations here are for lack of a better term; on-going education. The experiences we have here in our human form develop our eternal souls and to do this we must live many lives over to develop. Those who have been indoctrinated with the doctrine and dogma of religion may have a very difficult time grasping the concept of many incarnations here on earth. Or you may have trouble just letting go because of religious teachings. Religion traps your thinking and your spiritual development and many, many people don't even realize it. Letting your spirituality spread its wings is the key. Earth is a school where we learn how to grow our soul's love and wisdom. We must understand our existence here is far beyond our human comprehension. Our existence is far deeper than worshiping via a religion and performing in a ritualistic fashion. Once I read the book, I realized religion as we know it is inconsequential and mired in human rules and restrictions. When I bought this book I had no knowledge of the Newton Institute or Michael Newton. I am one of those readers that had no preconceived notion of anything in the book. I just read it and was blown away. It connected all the dots for me.

YOUR LIFE

Do you want to know the truth about your life? Read this book. There are many works on the market about reincarnation, life after life, and the NDE phenomenon, but MEMORIES OF THE AFTERLIFE provides a very succinct catalyst for all of the information "out there" on these subjects. The true stories in this volume illustrate perfectly the reasons for our life journeys on earth, as well as the bases of our trials and tribulations. They leave no doubt as to our eventual return to "home" in the afterlife's loving reality. Chapters such as "Two Suicides" and "I am Home" are proof that hope, growth, true happiness, and freedom from fear are possible for all of us. Further, LBL hypnotherapy from trained, experienced professionals is available to anyone who wants it! I found MEMORIES OF THE AFTERLIFE months ago when perusing Michael Newton books, and advance-ordered it. When it arrived last week, I read it cover-to-cover overnight, and am buying copies for friends.
