How We Think, by John Dewey

One of America’s foremost philosophers, John Dewey (1859-1952) fought for civil and academic freedom, founded the Progressive School movement, and steadfastly promoted a scientific approach to intellectual development.
In How We Think, Dewey shares his views on the educator’s role in training students to think well. Basing his assertions on the belief that knowledge is strictly relative to human interaction with the world, he considers the need for thought training, its use of natural resources, and its place in school conditions; inductive and deductive reasoning, interpreting facts, and concrete and abstract thinking; the functions of activity, language, and observation in thought training; and many other subjects.
John Dewey’s influence on American education and philosophy is incalculable. This volume, as fresh and inspirational today as it was upon its initial publication a century ago, is essential for anyone active in the field of teaching or about to embark on a career in education.

If you want to *learn* how to think better, read this book!
By Mike
Dewey's "How We Think" is the first book of his I have read. What a joy! I am in the "thick" of my doctoral dissertation, and am struggling to present and unfold my research work in a way that is clear to my audience (in this case, the members of my dissertation committee). Dewey's analysis of thought has helped me to consider important elements of thinking (and writing) such as: (1) the iterative "ebb and flow" between inductive and deductive thinking; (2) what is necessary to train my own mind to think "better"; etc.

Following my reading of "How We Think," I am now reading Dewey's "The Quest for Certainty" and "Knowing and the Known."

Reading "How We Think" is not difficult; however, it does require one to pay attention to what Dewey is saying to his reader audience. Now that I've read through it once, I will likely read through it again (fairly soon), as I work to tighten up my Ph.D. dissertation.

In conclusion, whether you are a student, teacher, or just plain interested in analyzing the world around you, then reading this book is very worthwhile.

Basic ideas to develop your thinking skills
By A Customer
It is very good to see this book appearing in new editions. This is a classic book about thinking. Dewey studies thought from the psychological and philosophical points of view and derives practical ideas for education.

Reading this book, I was surprised to see the applicability of its contents to my main activity field, which is business management. Today's main effort in business research is toward innovation and learning. Thus, thinking skill is probably the most important resource of any organization.

Dewey's view of thinking is surprisingly consistent and as fresh as any of the new management theories. Just to mention one aspect, he warns about the confusion of mental analysis (looking for the general aspects of an object) with physical analysis (dissection into parts), which leads to study living objects as if they were dead. This is the essence of systems thinking, which is so fashionable today!

The ideas Dewey presents about education are very useful for today's business environment. Business leaders, consultants and scholars should look carefully at his advices! His study of work and play is a great lesson of wisdom.

I would strongly recommend this book to anyone seriosly aiming at world class business performance.

This is a Bootleg Edition
By Anon.
This is not the same edition as the one that can be viewed on this page. There is a disclaimer in the front of the book that states that the so-called publisher "recreated this book from the original using Optical Character Recognition software..." Their software was defective. The results are unreadable gibberish. Information from the library they stole it from is integrated into the main body of text on the last page.

I am returning this to Amazon and looking for a legitimate copy of How We Think.

“A must read...I couldn’t put it down.” —Simone Elkeles on Catching Jordan

From the bestselling author of Catching Jordan comes a new teen romance sure to appeal to fans of Sarah Dessen.

SOME RULES WERE MEANT TO BE BROKEN.

Kate has always been the good girl. Too good, according to some people at school—although they have no idea the guilty secret she carries. But this summer, everything is different...

This summer she's a counselor at Cumberland Creek summer camp, and she wants to put the past behind her. This summer Matt is back as a counselor too. He's the first guy she ever kissed, and he's gone from geeky songwriter who loved The Hardy Boys to a buff lifeguard who loves to flirt...with her.

Kate used to think the world was black and white, right and wrong. Turns out, life isn't that easy...

Praise for Miranda Keaneally:

"Fresh, fearless, and totally romantic."—Sarah Ockler, bestselling author of the Twenty Boy Summer

"Catching Jordan is the romantic comedy I've been waiting for. I loved it!"—Jennifer Echols, author of Such a Rush

"An incredibly well-written, beautiful story that balances romance, drama, and comedy perfectly."—Bookish, on Stealing Parker

From School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up-Though devoutly religious, Kate recently compromised her deeply held beliefs to help her best friend, Emily, obtain an abortion-a decision that has strained the girls' friendship and sent Kate reeling. When the teen becomes a camp counselor the summer before starting college, she questions her identity even further. Romance blossoms between Kate and a fellow counselor, Matt, and she befriends Parker, a girl whom Kate used to look down upon for her wild and promiscuous lifestyle. Subsequently, she begins to reevaluate her judgmental attitudes. Though it's primarily her relationships with others that result in Kate's growth from an uptight, narrow-minded wallflower to a self-assured young woman, characterization is sketchy, and characters are largely one-note (the gorgeous, confident love interest; her lost and confused best friend; her strict, unsympathetic boss). Still, Kenneally's spare, straightforward prose, combined with a heavy dose of romance, makes it an accessible novel that should appeal even to reluctant readers. Kate's habit of questions to herself as she encounters conflicts ("But what if I would rather have a relationship with God than friendships with people who don't believe in him like I do?") imbues her with an uncertainty that will resonate with teens. Adolescents will also relate to her simultaneous feelings of longing and guilt as she copes with her burgeoning sexuality. Despite the flaws, teenagers will find this coming-of-age story both entertaining and poignant.-Mahnaz Dar, Library Journalα(c) Copyright 2013. Review
"Miranda Kenneally's best book yet. " - Shelf Awareness for Readers

"Like Diane Court in Say Anything, when sheltered, high-achieving junior Kate dives into a social life for the first time, she experiences the conflict and messiness of life at the same time she experiences her first love." - Justine magazine

"Talented Kenneally is unafraid to tackle challenging topics. Her heroine this go-round is a devout Christian struggling with her faith. Kate is an interesting blend of sweet, confused and judgmental, which doesn't always make her likable. However, she's incredibly realistic. A worthy read with a dreamy male lead." - RT Book Reviews

"An up-and-coming young-adult novelist." - The Washington Post

"Kate's sheltered worldview is well-drawn, and the hesitant first steps on her spiritual journey are handled sensitively . . . Kate's growth will keep readers, Christian or otherwise, reading." - Kirkus

"Kenneally's spare, straightforward prose, combined with a heavy dose of romance, makes it an accessible novel that should appeal even to reluctant readers. . .Teenagers will find this coming-of-age story both entertaining and poignant." - School Library Journal

"Throughout the novel, Kenneally uses a light touch, addressing teenage pregnancy, sexuality, and alcohol use without being pedantic. Wisdom from Kate's father, "Your truth isn't everybody else's truth," provides unanticipated guidance in this compassionate and nuanced exploration of friendship, love, and maturing religious understanding." - Publishers Weekly

"Simply put, if you love contemporary YA romance that has a mix serious issues, drama and steamy scenes then you are going to devour Things I Can't Forget. It is a great addition to the Hundred Oaks series." - Michelle and Leslie's Book Picks

"Kenneally's books have quickly become must–reads," - VOYA

Theoretically, I shouldn't have liked this
By O. Lisa
I'm going to start by stressing that I am not religious. Not at all. For this reason, I tend to be annoyed by books that push religion at me or that in any way promote, display, depict... you got the gist.
So that I rated it so high in itself speaks volumes.

The story is about holier-than-thou Kate, who goes to work as a counselor in a Christian camp during the summer. She's just lost her best friend Emily, who's been kicked out of the house after they discovered she got an abortion. Kate helped her getting it and her sense of guilt, as a friend and as a Christian, is overwhelming. Her beliefs, self righteousness, conception of sin and of what's right or wrong are strong and very much black and white.

For a good part of the book - and for someone maybe for the totality of it - Kate is not a character that one can easily like. She's judgmental, her vision of the world is restricted to her little community, so much so that she got on my nerves almost immediately. Take Parker, take Will, and - le sigh - take Matt. These are likable characters, normal, reasonable, good kids, good at heart not only because they're good Christians (in fact, if you remember Parker from the previous book, you know she messed up quite a lot).

However, what really stands out here and makes this book an almost five star read for me, is the depth of Kate's spiritual growth. There are some big topics tackled in this book and I have to say, they are really well explored. Through Kate's eyes, and with the help of some other characters - her dad's speech, in particular - we see her questioning what she believes and striving to understand what it is that she really believes versus what's been fed to her. Once again, despite me not sharing ANY of the beliefs in this book, I though it was really well made.
Add to that the fact that Kenneally writes some amazing romance and you got yourself a great contemporary YA piece of lit.

Now, I wish the book had ended differently. I wish Kate's spiritual evolution had taken one step further and I wish she's freed herself of all - what I consider - misconceptions, but that probably wouldn't have been in line with Kate's personality and it's just wishful thinking on my part.

I say if you've liked her previous books you really need to read this 'cause it's probably her best book so far.

Sweet and moving
By ODell @ Book Twirps
Kate was supposed to attend Cumberland Creek Camp with her best friend, Emily. They were supposed to be counselors this year, but recently, Emily and Kate had a blow-out after Emily got pregnant and had an abortion. Even though Kate took her to the doctor's office, it went against everything Kate believes in, and she is having a very hard time dealing with it.

Determined to put her losses behind her (not only has she lost Emily, but after a knee injury, she was also forced to quit playing soccer), Kate starts her job at the camp, reconnecting with Matt, a guy she hasn't seen in years -- the guy who was her first kiss. Matt has blossomed from a nerdy, scrawny kid into a super-hot college guy, and Kate can't stay away, even though she doesn't agree with some of the things he does. As the weeks pass, Matt and Kate grow closer and Kate is tested both spiritually and emotionally. She learns that life isn't always perfect and things aren't always black and white. Sometimes it's best to just accept the gray.

I will shamefully admit that until recently, I hadn't read any of Ms. Kenneally's books. (Don't judge!) I read Catching Jordan last month and really enjoyed it. With all of the books I had to review, I wasn't able to get to Stealing Parker before reading this book (and I wish I had, because Parker is a major character). With that being said, I still enjoyed this one. In fact I liked it even more than Catching Jordan.

Kate, the MC, was a breath of fresh air even though I have to admit that when I started the book, I prepped myself to be really put off by her. Within the first chapter or two, it's clear that Kate has a very close relationship with God. Now, don't get me wrong -- I'm not put off by religion in the least. In fact I'm A-okay with religion so long as it's not forced on me and so long as it's not used as a weapon or as an excuse to hate. I just get a little uncomfortable talking about religion and politics. Both are things I feel are very personal topics.

I was happy to find that Kate wasn't a hater. She was living the way that was right for her. At first she seems a little preachy, but after spending some time with her, I realized that she was living her life the way that she chose to, so who was I (or any of the characters in the book for that matter) to judge her? Some of them felt as if she was judging them and got all bent out of shape, calling her a Jesus freak and a nosey "b" when she would share her opinion. So what's the difference? It was okay for them to have an opinion, but not Kate? I loved watching Kate grow, and learn new things. What I loved most was that even though she grew, she never lost touch with who she was and what she wanted from her life.

The rest of the characters are just as engaging. I quickly grew to love Matt, and I really like Parker and Will. I must find time to read Stealing Parker ASAP.

I really liked everything about this book. The writing is perfect, the characters all deeply realized and the plot is great. There's something about a contemporary romance that takes place over the summer (be it summer camp, a family vacation to the beach, etc) that I love. I don't know what it is, but I love those types of books. The romance was done well and everything moved at a perfect pace. When I finished the book, I felt a deep sense of gratification.

If you are a fan of Ms. Kenneally's work, then this is a must read. If you haven't read her books, I encourage you to start now. I love her voice and her characters, and she always has a good message to give without being preachy. Don't let the religion thing turn you off if you're not into that. In fact, I encourage you to open your mind and embrace Kate. You may learn something from her.

Another fantastic book by Miranda Kenneally!
By Jetches
I love Miranda Kenneally's writing. I hope that she writes for years to come! Although this book doesn't have the sporty title like the two before it, and although it doesn't really involve sports, doesn't stop this book from rocking like the first two. This book is heavily focused on religion, mainly on Kate's beliefs and where they fit into her life. At first I didn't really like Kate, I thought she was judgemental and almost snobbish, and she was, but then you start to realize that's the point because throughout the novel we see a change in Kate. Not necessarily in her beliefs, but she starts to realize that everyone is entitled to their own. And that is one of the main reasons I loved this book. It talks about religion, but, in my opinion, it talks about how it should be treated. This novel is different that the first two. Not really any sports, the boys are different, and Jordan Woods comes back and actually talks in this one. Not to mention Parker is actually a pretty key character here too! At first I was a little worried about where this book was going but within a couple of chapters I was a goner and knew that I loved it.

Good:

Kate--she isn't trying to be rude or judgemental, she's just trying to figure things out and making mistakes along the way

Matt--He puts his jeep doors back on and wears flip-flops just for her.

Bad:

The only thing I didn't like is the fact that Megan was not really explained (she was kind of picking solely on her and someone should have told her to shove it!), and Brad. I felt like Brad's story was unfinished.

Overall (Writing style, story line, and general):

Overall this book was awesome. I loved how each chapter was her sketching what she is re-telling us. This novel was easy to follow and I smiled, swooned, and worried at all the right times. There were some moments of laughter (especially traded between Matt and Kate), but not a lot because this book seems a little bit more serious than the other two. I liked the approach on Religion even though some may disagree with me, and I found that Miranda Kenneally was making a strong point of view through this novel. I also loved the connetion and flow from book to book. Catching Jordan was all about sports, Stealing Parker about Sports and Religion, and this one about Religion. Miranda Kenneally is someone I foresee being around for a long time in the writing world, and I'm itching to be able to read Racing Savannah in December!

In the last fifty years the world has been completely transformed through the use of IT. We have now reached a new inflection point. This book presents, for the first time, how in-memory data management is changing the way businesses are run. Today, enterprise data is split into separate databases for performance reasons. Multi-core CPUs, large main memories, cloud computing and powerful mobile devices are serving as the foundation for the transition of enterprises away from this restrictive model. This book provides the technical foundation for processing combined transactional and analytical operations in the same database. In the year since we published the first edition of this book, the performance gains enabled by the use of in-memory technology in enterprise applications has truly marked an inflection point in the market. The new content in this second edition focuses on the development of these in-memory enterprise applications, showing how they leverage the capabilities of in-memory technology.  The book is intended for university students, IT-professionals and IT-managers, but also for senior management who wish to create new business processes.

From the Back Cover
In the last 50 years the world has been completely transformed through the use of IT. We have now reached a new inflection point. Here we present, for the first time, how in-memory computing is changing the way businesses are run. Today, enterprise data is split into separate databases for performance reasons. Analytical data resides in warehouses, synchronized periodically with transactional systems. This separation makes flexible, real-time reporting on current data impossible. Multi-core CPUs, large main memories, cloud computing and powerful mobile devices are serving as the foundation for the transition of enterprises away from this restrictive model. We describe techniques that allow analytical and transactional processing at the speed of thought and enable new ways of doing business. The book is intended for university students, IT-professionals and IT-managers, but also for senior management who wish to create new business processes by leveraging in-memory computing.

No trendy IT stone left unturned!
By MCNAUGHTON NEIL
`In Memory Data Management: An inflection point for the enterprise' (IMDM) by SAP's Hasso Plattner and Alexander Zeier is a curious read. Its starting point is the dichotomy between transactional databases and reporting/analytical systems. Historically, these have been kept separate for performance reasons. You don't want your transactional system to be brought to its knees by a query from an analyst. Another problem that arises in database analytics is that the `pure' relational model of linked tables and indexes can provide poor performance with joins across many tables. But systems are speeding up. Do we really need all this complexity of non relational systems duplicated for transactions and analytics? The thesis of IMDM is that modern systems are so powerful that you can realize database nirvana by running the database in memory. This database runs so fast that complex queries can proceed with little or no impact on the transactions. All you need is a fast machine with boatloads of fast RAM. One data base, one data model. Well, that is the theory.

It is not quite as simple as that. IMDM spends a lot of time (and more detail than most readers would probably want) explaining how to adapt data structures and squeeze the database into memory and retool queries as stored procedures.

The book revolves around a system called SansSouciDB (SSDB), as used in SAP's `Hana' appliance (Oil ITJ December 2010). SSDB stores active data in `compressed columns' in memory. External (disk) is reserved for logging and recovery purposes and to query historical data. SSDB makes use of parallel processing, across blades and across cores. Test target architecture included high end blades each with 64 cores and 2 terabytes memory per blade. Uses cases are briefly presented--one for smart grid meter data, another for real time sensor net/RFID data streams.

Sometimes IMDM's scope is bewildering. What is that Microsoft Surface doing there? Why so much on specific Intel Nehalem architectures, on virtualization and even `big data' and cloud computing. The authors appear not to leave any trendy IT stone unturned, ensuring that the marketing message for `in memory' resonates in every ear. Could SSDB include an element of FUD*?

A better title for this book might have been adapting and optimizing databases to novel architectures. But this in a sense would be giving the game away. Modern architectures, as we saw in our review of Pete Pacheco's introduction to parallel programming (April 2011), far from offering straightforward performance hikes to either seismic imaging or relational databases, actually require a retooling of the system, application and likely the user code to realize the full potential of the hardware. At one level, IMDM can be seen as an interesting discussion on how to build and run a fast database and will be of interest to technologists. On the other hand, it does a good job of debunking the notion that `in memory,' at least with current architectures, is a straightforward route to performance. Sans souci (French for `no worries') it is not!

* Fear uncertainty and doubt.

Azrael smiled, flashing perfect white teeth that sported incisors slightly longer than the norm. Some people naturally looked like that, he knew, but on him it looked different enough that he didn’t smile often. On him, it seemed to fit too perfectly and only served to reinforce the otherworldly impressions people often had when looking at him.

He was a starkly charismatic individual. He was taller than anyone he knew, save perhaps Samael. His voice could literally mesmerize. He was also uncommonly, almost painfully handsome. He wasn’t certain why the Old Man had seen fit to bother with such a thing while simultaneously making him a vampire. It was like the curse of Beethoven, who created the most beautiful music in the world and couldn’t hear it. What good was a beautiful face when placed on a monster?

But Sophie didn’t seem to mind the hint of fang he exposed. In fact, as he brushed her mind, unable to help himself from drawing nearer to her in any way possible, he was surprised to find that she found it attractive. My God, she thought. He really does look like a vampire.

This was the second time she had thought such a thing. If he’d been capable of choking, he would have done so the first time her mind had muttered the impression. Hearing it now had nearly as strong an effect on Azrael. Sophie wasn’t repulsed by vampires. And the idea that he resembled one was appealing to her.

Of course, Azrael was no fool. A lot of girls believed they would enjoy the company of a vampire – if vampires existed. In reality, he knew they would cower or scream or run, or most likely all three. Still… he found himself hoping.

“Sophie Bryce, right? The maid of honor?” he asked, his smile utterly disarming. He’d had millennia to practice.

Sophie blinked and he read her thoughts. She was desperately trying to find her head in the wake of his sudden presence. She’d been torturing herself over the last few days, and he knew it. He’d watched her every night. Listened to her. He knew damn well that she was drawn to him – and that she hated herself for it.

He sensed it when a slight pain twinged up her arm and Sophie realized that her friend was holding her tight. Taylor’s fingers curled into Sophie’s forearm in utter distraction, her hazel eyes glued to Azrael. He knew she couldn’t help it and wasn’t aware of what she was doing, but the fact that she’d brought his archess even the slightest discomfort was difficult for Az to ignore. It upset him.

And with practiced control, he tamped down the anger.

Sophie, on the other hand, appeared to be glad for the pain. It shot through the dazed fog that Az’s appearance had caused. It also cleared her senses enough to allow her to pull her arm out of Taylor’s grip, clear her throat, and say, “Yes.” He tried not to smile when her voice cracked halfway through the single syllable. She cleared her throat some more and forced a smile to her lips. “That’s me.” She was so fucking cute with half of her glorious golden locks tucked up underneath that Penguins cap. Wisps of it fell about her face, framing it and caressing it the way he wanted to.

He chuckled softly, watching her carefully to gauge the effect his laugh had on her. Sophie’s gold eyes brightened, her lips parted, and her cheeks flushed ever so slightly. Az’s monster reared its head and he felt his vision begin to heat up. If he wasn’t careful, his eyes would begin to glow. “We never got the chance to actually meet the other night,” he told her, forcing himself to continue with the charade.

“No,” she agreed, relieved that she was finally finding her voice. “We didn’t.”

He cocked his head to one side and slid his gaze from hers to regard her friends. He needed to look away – just for a moment. Long enough to get himself under control once more. His gold eyes slowly scanned the faces of her companions – and then stopped on the pair of men who sat behind them.

A quick scan of their minds told him they were recent graduates from Carnegie Mellon University. The one on the right was the son of a wealthy factory owner here in the city. His name was Richard. And he’d been thinking all sorts of biblical things about Sophie that night.

Azrael grew very still and something dark flickered across his face. He knew it was there; he knew he was failing to hide his sudden fury. But he barely cared.

Richard fell back into the curve of his seat and swallowed hard as the blood drained from his face. Below him, Sophie cleared her throat, at once drawing Azrael’s attention. Sophie slowly stood and turned to face him. “Az, these are my friends, Taylor and Emily.” She gestured toward them and they smiled nervously, but politely, nodding in his direction.

Emily and Taylor’s eyes were still a little glazed over at his presence, so, Az allowed some of his vampiric influence to snake around and through the girls, easing them into a more comfortable state of relaxation.

It worked like a charm. Within seconds, Taylor was smiling easily and standing to greet him properly. “It’s a pleasure to meet you,” she said, extending her hand.

“Likewise,” Az agreed, and with a slight bow, accepted the offered hands of both Taylor and then Emily, who quickly followed suit.

While he shook hands, Sophie’s thoughts echoed through Az’s mind.

She couldn’t believe that her friends weren’t guessing he was the Masked One. It seemed so obvious to her now that she knew his secret. Everything about him screamed of the kind of rock star charisma that it took to hold millions of fans in sway.

Meanwhile, Sophie’s gaze traveled over Azrael’s form, and he tried not to visibly crow with the triumph he felt when she shamelessly took in the way the black button-up shirt under his sports coat stretched taut across the muscles of his chest. She was particularly fond of the curve of his neck where it met his shoulder.

Azrael released Emily’s hand, straightened again, and heard Sophie’s heart rate speed up.

He looked up to see that her sunshine eyes were glassy with unabashed desire. And, as if it would hide the way her mouth watered for him, she had pressed her bottom lip between two perfect, white teeth. Azrael’s gaze locked on the plump lip. He quickly slipped his hands into the pockets of his trench coat as they tightened into fists at his sides, and his nails began to cut into his palms. He imagined her pressing hard enough with her teeth to draw blood.

If she did… it would all be over.

“Juliette mentioned you live in Pittsburgh,” he said, trying to break through not only his tension, but hers. “I’d forgotten.” His tone was gentle, personal. He knew that to her, it was as if they were the only two in the arena.

“For now,” she told him flat-out. She didn’t want to bore him with the fact that she would only be there for two more days, but he was well aware.

“But what are you doing here?” she asked, honestly curious. It was quite a coincidence to her that she had never seen him before in her life – and then, suddenly, she’d seen him twice in the space of a week. She wasn’t stupid; she was wary.

That was okay with him. He had a story and he would use it, but even this lie was too much of a secret for him to share with her friends. Az glanced at Taylor and Emily and smiled an easy, even somewhat shy smile. “It’s a personal matter actually,” he said. “However…” he paused, turned, and glanced up toward the private booths up above them. His band awaited him in one of them; they had a bird’s eye view of the entire arena from their vantage point. He knew because he’d been watching Sophie from it all night.

He also knew that Sophie had never been in one of those suites herself, and he was hoping she’d be tempted enough by what he was about to offer that he could pull her away from her companions at least for a little while. “Second period will begin in a few minutes,” he said, looking back down at her and scorching her once more with stark eyes. “And there is plenty of room in our suite for another guest.” He chanced another glance at the men seated behind Sophie – especially Richard – and was smugly satisfied when the young man looked as though he wanted to piss himself. “Perhaps you would care to join me?” he asked, turning his gaze back on his archess.

He could hear her blood rushing through her veins. He was scaring her and thrilling her at the same time. She was finding it hard to think.

He wasn’t opposed to working with that; he had no desire to stand here and play the good guy much longer anyway.

A gentle push of his power, and it surrounded Sophie. In a few moments, she not only found it difficult to think, she found it impossible. Seconds ago, she’d had a thousand reasons why she should keep away from Azrael. And the fact that he belonged to – was destined to be with – another, was the most powerful.

But just then, every reason she’d had, and in fact, reason itself, fled from her consciousness and she found herself saying, “Yes.” She’d barely whispered it, but it was enough.

Azrael’s smile broadened.

Death's Angel - The Love Story of Azrael and Sophie
By Mary Moritz
"Death's Angel," the third novel in the Lost Angels series by Heather Killough-Walden, tells the love story of the archangel Azrael, former Angel of Death, and his recently discovered archess, the beautiful Sophie Bryce. I have read the previous books of the Lost Angel series and enjoyed them immensely, but this story, particularly the relationship between Sophie and Az, raises the series to a new emotional level. Az and Sophie each carry scars that they try to ignore but which influence them throughout their lives. Sophie lost her parents as a small child - in fact, a week before her sixth birthday. They were everything to her and whenever she speaks of them or participates in the little rituals they shared, it's heartbreaking. Once orphaned she was raised in foster care, experiencing much trauma, some of which she has completely blocked out. Sophie has one person she is really close to, her best friend Juliette. However, Juliette is newly married to archangel Gabriel and residing in Scotland mostly while Sophie has committed to plans that will move her to San Francisco. She finds herself without Juliette and mostly alone.

The prologue to "Death's Angel," powerfully depicts the beginning of Azrael's suffering, 2,000 years earlier when the four favored first came down to earth. Az is changed like none of his brothers. Many of the souls he led away, as was his job as the Angel of Death, seem to have held a grudge against him and all of their ill will has cursed him and turned him into a vampire, a creature that never even existed before. Suddenly he is fighting to feed off Michael each night, ripping into his neck to make his own horrid agony go away. Azrael is filled with self-loathing, begging Michael to kill him and fantasizing about walking into the sun, now caustic to him. He sees himself as a monster. It's a gut-wrenching scene, vividly depicted and beautifully written.

Try as I might, I can't do justice to the relationship between Az and Sophie. Heather Killough-Walden has taken her story of the Lost Angels and split it wide open. She has taken complicated, painful feelings and wounded lives and created a complicated, nurturing relationship that is both magical and gutsy real at the same time. And so passionate. Az and Sophie do make love like two people who have found each other after a lifetime of longing. Sophie and Az have a love that does seem to have waited for them, and it seems less like the Old Man created Sophie for Az, and more like they're parts of each other. They heal each other as well as themselves. There are lots of other happenings in this book, but I don't want to spoil the story. Suffice it to say that the monsters get more colorful and new allegiances are formed.

Sometimes I get the sense that an author has reached out her hand and caught fairy dust, or dragon's breath, or the whispers of bards long gone to deliver the magic of story. What I mean to say is that there are times reading when it seems magic happens: I bond with a character, or empathize so deeply and achingly that I can't easily shake the feeling. It's like crossing to another world. I know that's what reading is supposed to be about but some authors touch the magic more than others. Heather Killough-Walden is one of those.

Love the Detail and the End Kept Me on the Edge of My Seat
By Evanlea's Bookshelf
Death's Angel is the third in HKW's Lost Angels series. The series tells the stories of the 4 favored archangels as they begin to find the archesses that had been promised to them thousands of years ago. Each couple goes through their own troubles and tribulations as they find their own way to true love with their soul mates. Death's Angel is Azrael's and Sophie's story. The beginning of the book is a build-up to the ending which had me riveted to my seat. For some, the beginning can seem a bit slow as HKW does what she is known for and provides all of the details and builds the relationship of the two main characters, but believe me, it is well worth the time to learn about all of the players and their impact on the future of this couple. Az is the angel of death and the first vampire, and in this book we are introduced to some of his vampires. It helps to show Az as a "person", his caring side. We also get to see the struggle with Sophie as she deals with jealousy and the feelings of inadequacy and the fears of being left behind.

After reading this book, I am anxiously awaiting the 4th book in the series. If you haven't read the first two books, make sure to pick them up along with Death's Angel, because you aren't going to want to miss a moment of this series.

This author surpasses, another fantastic read!
By Poppet
It's so horribly sad when I pondered this review, because I realized that I've come to expect impeccable vocabulary, impressive metaphors, and an exceptional flexing of the imagination to unknown territory when it comes to Heather Killough-Walden's work.

She is so impressive that the vast scope of her work a reader who reads many of her books can become blasé about. And I'm utterly appalled that a book so incredible I can think, this is normal.

No, it's not normal, it's damn impressive compared to other authors, it's only normal when you speak of this particular author. And yet I know Heather must have dug so deep to get the tones and shades just right, she must have been so pleased when she invented shadow walking and the magical creatures littered in this novel.

It's such a gem of author ingenuity that to be blasé about it would be a gross insult to the author.

This book is simply outstanding. It's a given to say I loved every second of it, that the world faded away as I stuck to the pages with a force beyond my control and was verily compelled to read it from start to finish with the only pause being for sleep - because that's what I've come to expect from this author's worlds.

As contemporary as this book is, Heather makes it all SO plausible, so real, so everyday, that it doesn't feel like a stretch of the imagination to believe these creatures are all around us and this battle is in fact going on in the darkness of the night, in realms and locations we're ignorant about.

It's utterly believable - but more than this, this story of Sophie coming to love an archangel is beautiful, mesmerizing, and very emotive.

It moves your emotions because it's the grittiest of the angel series so far. It boldly steps into the darkness of humanity and it strikes a cord - over and over again. It's so sad and bitter in places that you are moved to tears - I found the issue of the step-father really hit a nerve with me and it made me wish for a world where children are cherished and that men and their desires left young girls the heck alone and out of their sordid disgusting paws.

It's a feat of a novel, it's jam packed with drama and action and attraction and desperation. There are threads here that linger. For an author to move the reader's emotions to such a degree means they are really very good at what they do. This author is a guarantee that you will be moved around the emotional chess board - completely covering it - in each and every one of her novels, but with each new release she seems to be sewing these emotions deeper into the reader, leaving a stamp on your spine like the flag on the moon that declares *I've been here*.

Well done Heather K-W, your work never ceases to impress me. I apologize for taking your talent so horrifically for granted, because truly this book surpasses any expectation a normal sane reader would have. I love that you paint novels with light, dark, rainbows and nightmares, breaching the apathy of this world with your art.

This novel is just stupendous and definitely leaves a lingering impression. Well done! This is truly an incredibly original novel. You've never read anything like it, and I dare say she'll start a new trend in paranormal romances.

The Gravity of Birds: A Novel, by Tracy Guzeman

A debut novel already destined to be a book club favorite. “With its deft interweaving of psychological complexity and riveting narrative momentum, with its gorgeous prose and poetic justice, The Gravity of Birds is about sibling rivalry, tragedies, and resurrections. And it’s irresistibly exquisite” (San Francisco Chronicle).

Forty-four years after the brilliant young painter, Thomas Bayber, first meets Alice and Natalie Kessler, Bayber unveils a never-before-seen work, Kessler Sisters—a provocative painting depicting the young Thomas, Alice, and Natalie. Bayber asks Dennis Finch, an art history professor, and Stephen Jameson, an eccentric young art authenticator, to sell the painting. But their task becomes more complicated when the artist requires that they first locate Alice and Natalie, who seem to have disappeared.

Told in alternating chapters that weave revelations about the sisters’ past with clues Finch and Jameson discover in the present, this story sets three characters on a collision course with their histories, showing how families tear themselves apart and then try to bind themselves together again, not always creating the same fabric. The Gravity of Birds “combines the drama of warring sisters, the mystery of a missing painting, and the sorrow of lost love into a haunting elegy that will…leave you breathless” (Tiffany Baker, author of The Little Giant of Aberdeen County).

Legendary artist Thomas Bayber calls reliable art historian Dennis Fincher and eccentric art authenticator Stephen Jameson to task them with an errand. Although Bayber stopped painting years ago, and his artwork has been extensively documented, he shows them a never-before-seen central panel in a triptych that depicts himself as a young man posed with two sisters, Alice and Natalie Kessler. What he wants Dennis and Stephen to find are the other two panels of the painting, which he gave to the sisters, who seem to have vanished without a trace in 1972. Their quest starts out inauspiciously, since Dennis refuses to fly, and Stephen doesn’t know how to drive, but before long, the two art aficionados become obsessed with finding the missing sisters and the missing panels even as they reveal their own grievous losses. Their narrative is interspersed with the story of the estranged Kessler sisters and their separate relationships with the brilliant if self-absorbed Bayber. The talented Guzeman, incredibly assured in her first novel, slightly overshoots with her busy plot, but her cast of endearing eccentrics and her stellar prose will win her a loyal audience. --Joanne Wilkinson

“A lovely, mesmerizing novel. The Gravity of Birds combines the drama of warring sisters, the mystery of a missing painting, and the sorrow of lost love into a haunting elegy that will, like the artwork it describes, leave you breathless. Guzeman writes of both the fragility of the human spirit and its inner strength. The book unfurls like a hidden canvas, soaked with color, emotional longing, and a desire to make sense of what is often too painful to be said without the assistance of art. It is a novel not to be missed." (Alyson Richman, best-selling author of The Lost Wife )

Read slowly and savor!
By Experienced Editor
It took me a long time to read this book. Even though I was eager to see what would happen next, I found myself lingering over the language, the images, the sudden shifts and surprises. The story involves multiple main characters, each one well developed with his or her own voice and personality. These are not figures who can be labeled as "good guys" and "bad guys." Each one is a combination of good and bad traits, which makes them human, and each one is important to the plot -- although that is not evident at first.

The plot itself is multilayered, with the elements woven into a complex pattern. In a nutshell: in 1963, two teenage sisters are smitten by the same man, a talented artist who is nearly 30. He lives near their summer vacation home and they see him every year until 1971, then lose touch. Decades later, in 2007, the artist -- who is now a famous recluse -- shows a hitherto unknown painting to an art professor and an art appraiser. It's a portrait of himself with the two sisters, allegedly the center panel of a triptych. The artist asks the two men to handle the sale of this painting (which will make them both famous for "finding" it) on condition that they locate the two missing panels. It doesn't take much brainpower to figure out that he doesn't want the paintings ... he wants to find the sisters.

As the professor and the appraiser follow clues across the country (and well-placed flashbacks show us earlier events) we unravel not just the physical mystery of the paintings but the psychological depths of the various characters and the way they affect each other. Several times I thought I'd figured out how the story would end, and each time some new twist gave me more to consider. The conclusion resolves some issues but leaves others open-ended. I'd love to know more about what happened to characters I'd come to care about, but the ending offered possibilities that let me enjoy thinking about the story after I'd finished reading.

Birds and bird cages and gravity, oh my!
By Kindle Customer
Lately I have this strange fixation with birds and bird cages. And they seem to be popular now for knickknacks and jewelry. So, when I saw the cover and title of this book in a weekly email about literary novels from amazon.com I was intrigued. When I read the synopsis for this novel, I wasn't so sure it would be my cup of tea. I'm just not drawn to novels about the intertwined lives of it's characters whose stories are played out in the novel over scores of years. I just don't care about those things anymore. I'm too old and I feel I've figured out, in a general sense, what motivates people. However, I downloaded a sample of the book to my kindle to at least give it a try because I liked the cover and the title. Silly reasons perhaps, I'll admit, but my intuition on picking a book by it's cover art usually serves me well.
I won't give you a synopsis of the book because the one given by the publisher is more than adequate. What I would like to tell you, though, is Tracy is a wonderful writer. There is a sense that she uses her words sparingly while not stinting on an almost lyrical way of writing. Her observations concerning the motivations of her characters are shrewd and she delivers them with the greatest effect. I found the way she delivered her characters stories to be different than most novels I've read lately. But that is my humble opinion. You must decide that for yourself, of course. The story kept me interested from page one until the end. Never did I feel that it slowed, or dragged. And I became totally immersed in it. I found it to be interesting, complex and heartbreaking. I absolutely loved it! I hope Tracy writes again soon because I can't wait to read more of her books. She is an amazing talent. Please give this book a try. If it could interest a jaded person like me, I truly feel that you'll love it too.

A Novel for Anyone but Especially for Those Interested in Art and Artists
By Fairbanks Reader - Bonnie Brody
I really enjoyed this book and appreciated how much of it had to do with art and artists. Being married to an artist, the book really resonated with me despite the fact that my husband's personality is not at all like the protagonist's.

The central character in this book is Thomas Bayber, an artist of great renown but who has not painted anything for over twenty years. He is in his seventies and living as a recluse in a dark and dingy apartment in New York City. Supposedly, all of his paintings are accounted for and reside in the great museums with a few in the homes of some very wealthy collectors. Thomas decides to call Dennis Finch, a well-known art historian and expert on Bayber's work to his home. Finch has supported Bayber by paying his rent and his bills for years. Finch works as a writer and professor and is in mourning for the recent death of his beloved wife, Claire. Along with Dennis Finch, Bayber calls Stephen Jameson, a strange and socially awkward man who is an expert on the authentication of art. He tells them that there is a painting of his that no one has ever seen and that has been unaccounted for. Dennis can not believe it because he has catalogued all of Bayber's work. However, the painting is unveiled in Thomas's apartment and, with time, they realize that it is part of a triptych. The painting is a disturbing portrait of the Kessler family, primarily the two daughters, Natalie and Alice. Bayber gets Finch to promise to find the other two parts of the triptych and this leads to a search for the people who are painted in the portrait. Because it is a portrait primarily of Natalie and Alice, the thought is that they would have the answer as to the location of the missing two panels.

The portrait's disturbing qualities come from the way the two young girls are situated in the painting, both of them looking like they are involved in some intimate way with Thomas. Alice is about fourteen in the painting and Natalie, her older sister, is eighteen years old. Alice is an intense, intelligent and loving girl who loves ornithology and studied it in college when she was older. She knows all the birds that flock near their summer rental which is right next door to Bayber's. Natalie is cold and harsh with something like rage seething beneath the surface. Though very beautiful at first glance, she spells trouble. Shortly after they finish college, their parents die and they leave their Connecticut home immediately. By this time, Alice has come down with rheumatoid arthritis which is very debilitating and painful.

Dennis and Stephen decide that the way to find the triptych is to find Natalie and Alice. Thus begins a country-wide search. They both believe that it may not be the two panels of the painting that are most important to Thomas, but rather the finding of the Kessler sisters. What Thomas's relationship was to them is not known but it is obvious that he has very strong feelings for them. This is unusual for a man who has never had an long-term relationships with women and does not seem to care about other people.

The book is a debut novel but it is written with panache. I never for a second found anything to suggest that the author was a novice at writing. She has had short stories published but this is her first novel. It is fully realized with wonderful characterization and a fascinating plot that kept me on my toes for the whole ride. I highly recommend this novel, especially for anyone with an interest in art and artists.

Ava Gardner: The Secret Conversations, by Peter Evans, Ava Gardner

The wickedly candid New York Times bestesller that Ava Gardner dared not publish during her lifetime—“the heartbreaking memoir of the ultimate heartbreaker” (Philadelphia Inquirer).

Ava Gardner was one of Hollywood’s biggest and brightest stars during the 1940s and ’50s, an Oscar-nominated leading lady who co-starred with Clark Gable, Burt Lancaster, and Humphrey Bogart, among others. But this riveting account of her storied life, including her marriage to Frank Sinatra, and career had to wait for publication until after her death—because Gardner feared it was too revealing.

“I either write the book or sell the jewels,” Gardner told coauthor Peter Evans, “and I’m kinda sentimental about the jewels.” The legendary actress serves up plenty of gems in these pages, reflecting with delicious humor and cutting wit on a life that took her from rural North Carolina to the heights of Hollywood’s Golden Age. Tell-all stories abound, especially when Gardner divulges on her three husbands: Mickey Rooney, a serial cheater so notorious that even his mother warned Gardner about him; bandleader Artie Shaw, whom Ava calls “a dominating son of a bitch…always putting me down;” and Frank Sinatra (“We were fighting all the time. Fighting and boozing. It was madness. But he was good in the feathers”).

“Her story is a raw-nerved revelation. . . . A vivid portrait” (Chicago Tribune). Witty, penetrating, unique in its voice, it is impossible to put down—“A complete delight” (Philadelphia Inquirer).

From Booklist
*Starred Review* In 1988, only two years before her death, legendary actress Ava Gardner, then living in semiseclusion in London and running low on money, asked the late Evans to ghostwrite her autobiography: “I either write the book or sell the jewels, and I’m kinda sentimental about the jewels.” Gardner didn’t want to do a sugarcoated memoir, preferring to tell it straight, the real story of the marriages to Mickey Rooney, Artie Shaw, and Frank Sinatra, the multiple affairs (with Howard Hughes, among many others), the hardscrabble childhood in North Carolina tobacco country. But as the two met and Gardner began speaking of her life, it became clear to Evans that the actress was more reticent about telling it straight than she pretended to be. The conversations were uninhibited, to be sure, but Gardner balked at the finished chapters (“I sound too fucking vulgar”), leading ultimately to the project being abandoned. Shortly before his own death in 2012, Evans wrote this memoir of a memoir-in-progress, transcribing Gardner’s recollections and providing connective passages setting the scenes. What emerges doesn’t cover the sweep of the movie icon’s remarkable life as fully as Lee Server’s Ava Gardner (2006), but it does capture Gardner’s indelible voice—vulgar, yes, but humanly so as well as unfailingly witty and movingly melancholic. Finally, 25 years after the fact, we have at least a facsimile of the unbuttoned version Gardner claimed she wanted to tell. Movie buffs will be as transfixed by the actress’ own words as they have always been by her drop-dead beauty on the screen. --Bill Ott

Review
''I read Ava Gardner: The Secret Conversations in a delirious gulp. It is absolutely terrific. I couldn't put it down. Gardner comes across as a flamboyant but tragic figure who always spoke the truth no matter how painful. And the way writer Peter Evans has shaped their conversations is truly remarkable.''--Patricia Bosworth, author of Jane Fonda: The Private Life of a Public Woman

''Jaw-dropping anecdotes about film legends and the studio system in its heyday make this an irresistible read. . . . Even seasoned fans will learn fresh tidbits about ex-husbands Mickey Rooney, Artie Shaw, and Frank Sinatra, as well as her tumultuous relationships with Howard Hughes and George C. Scott. . . . Gardner is funny and frank, and Evans's diligence makes the book not only one of the more revealing celebrity autobiographies published recently, but a candid glimpse into the world of a ghostwriter, star handler, and late-night confidante.'' --Publishers Weekly)

''An unvarnished account of [Gardner's] marriages and affairs in golden-age Hollywood. . . . Give[s] a vivid sense of Gardner's salty, no-BS personality. . . . Juicy. '' --Kirkus Reviews

''A complete delight. . . . [Gardner's] quotes exude the musk of a woman supremely indifferent to the social proprieties and expectations of her era. . . . Hers is the heartbreaking memoir of the ultimate heartbreaker.'' --Carrie Rickey Philadelphia Inquirer

A Tell All that Tells ALL!
By D_shrink
I found the book thoroughly enjoyable, with the only fault being that the author didn't get to complete it, as the actress stopped cooperating, but I will leave that for the end. Ava Lavinia Gardner was born on Christmas Eve of 1922 in Smithfield, NC and ended being buried there 67 years later in Sunset Memorial Park next to her brothers, her father, Jonas, 1878-1938, and her mother, Mary Elizabeth, "Mollie", 1883-1943. Her actual date of death was January 25,1990. She swore voraciously and smoked 3 packs a day for many years suffering from emphysema, pneumonia, and had several strokes. But her adult life was dominated by her looks and extreme fondness for unadulterated sex.

Ava claims she had a happy childhood, the youngest child born into a working class farm family. She claims to have been a tomboy and loved her "Daddy" best of all, he always just called her "daughter" which she loved, as it made her feel as though she belonged to someone. In Ava's own words, "You can sum up my life in a sentence, honey: she made movies, she made out, and she made a f****** mess of her life." [p2] "Her affairs had brought her final husband, Frank Sinatra, to the brink of suicide, taken her lover Howard Hughes beyond the edge of madness, and provoked George C. Scott to bouts of homicidal rage." [p7]

Ava was a 19yo virgin when she married Mickey Rooney on 1/10/1942 and a very experienced lover by the time she divorced him over his supposed numerous affairs on 5/23/1943; a date she says was easy to remember as it was the same day her mother died. She was tired of Mickey's antics from early on in their marriage, but stayed as long as she did, since the sex was very good. "[H]e was athletic in the sack and I was pretty verbal, and we were both very, very loud!" [p154] She continued to see Mickey while separated from him prior to their divorce, while carrying on with Howard Hughes at the same time. She later said, "It's a pity nobody believes in simple lust anymore." [p156] Shortly thereafter while the author questions her about the accuracy of some of the events she talks about, she says "It's my f****** life. I'll remember it the way I want to remember it." [p161]

Her love affairs and assignations were too numerous to list all, but in addition to her husbands, there were numerous leading men actors, several Spanish bullfighters, directors, writers [including Ernest Hemingway], and even 4 NYC garbage collectors on her way back from a party she found boring. ;-) Now that story was funny.

After Mickey and her affair with Howard Hughes she married big band leader, Artie Shaw, whose real name was Jacob Ben-Yitzhak Artshawsky. BTW, her friendship with Howard hughes went on for some 20 years while married to Shaw and later Frank Sinatra. Artie like Mickey liked a little variety in his sex life and Ava couldn't stand that although she seemed to have matched them tit for tat. After the marriage to Shaw which lasted from 1945-46 and after which he quickly married novelist Kathleen Winsor, she later married Frank on 11/7/1951, a mere seven days after he divorced his wife Nancy; after numerous spats she divorced him in 1957. After which he married Mia Farrow.

Getting back to why the book was never finished her whole life; it seems that Frank Sinatra had sued the author some years before and hated him. He therefore paid Ava the amount of her guarantee not to publish the book in her and his lifetime. she quickly ended the relationship with the author and died a few years later. And if you think I have told her whole story, I guarantee you there is much more left unsaid. The neat part about this book is the author telling how he got her to reveal as much as she did. This is probably a book you will either like for what it is or you will hate for what it is. As someone else once said, "Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder!"

A UNIQUE BIOGRAPHY
By Lilly Lavender
This isn't just a biography this is an insight into how a ghost writer interacts with his subject and likewise how the subject interacts with the ghost writer. You soon realise it's no easy ride for Peter Evans when Ava Gardner is appalled at her own story and tries to persuade Evans to smooth over the rough edges or leave them out altogether. But he is having none of it. The Secret Conversations is a beautifully written book that I couldn't put down. I felt sad as I was finishing reading the final chapter - I really felt I had got to know Peter Evans and Ava Gardner so well I didn't want to let them go.

Marvelous insight into the life of a Hollywood goddess
By Kujifanya Jina
The aborted autobiography of Ava Gardner left the author with hours of tape and notes from daily conversations with the screen goddess after her stroke left her without a career. This quasi-"Sunset Boulevard" tome takes us into the memories and regrets of Ava Gardner's life. Insightful, endlessly fascinating and ultimately sad, we learn that Gardner never stopped loving Frank Sinatra, but never stopped asserting her independence and autonomy as a woman -- and an actress -- to her own detriment. She dishes on first husband Mickey Rooney, telling tales that have never been heard before of Rooney's womanizing, gambling and effervescent personality. She outs Howard Hughes as a racist, Artie Shaw as a spouse abuser, Sinatra as an emotional wreck and George C. Scott as a violent spouse-beater. She also heaps tons of criticism on herself for her failures and faults. This is not to be missed.
