Black against Empire: The History and Politics of the Black Panther Party, by Joshua Bloom, Waldo E., Jr. Martin

In Oakland, California, in 1966, community college students Bobby Seale and Huey Newton armed themselves, began patrolling the police, and promised to prevent police brutality. Unlike the Civil Rights Movement that called for full citizenship rights for blacks within the U.S., the Black Panther Party rejected the legitimacy of the U.S. government and positioned itself as part of a global struggle against American imperialism. In the face of intense repression, the Party flourished, becoming the center of a revolutionary movement with offices in 68 U.S. cities and powerful allies around the world.

Black against Empire is the first comprehensive overview and analysis of the history and politics of the Black Panther Party. The authors analyze key political questions, such as why so many young black people across the country risked their lives for the revolution, why the Party grew most rapidly during the height of repression, and why allies abandoned the Party at its peak of influence. Bold, engrossing, and richly detailed, this book cuts through the mythology and obfuscation, revealing the political dynamics that drove the explosive growth of this revolutionary movement, and its disastrous unraveling. Informed by twelve years of meticulous archival research, as well as familiarity with most of the former Party leadership and many rank-and-file members, this book is the definitive history of one of the greatest challenges ever posed to American state power.

Review
"A comprehensive history."--New Yorker

"This meticulously researched history explores the combination of revolutionary commitment and historical circumstance that enabled the emergence of the Black Panther Party. Because they do not shy away from the contradictions that animated this movement, Joshua Bloom and Waldo Martin pose crucial questions about the genesis, rise, and decline of the BPP that are as relevant to young generations of activists as they are to those who came of age during that era." --Angela Y. Davis, Distinguished Professor Emerita, History of Consciousness, University of California, Santa Cruz

"The first comprehensive history of the party."--The London Review of Books

"As important as the Black Panthers were to...the African American freedom struggle...scholarship on the group has been surprisingly thin and all too often polemical. Certainly no definitive scholarly account of the Panthers...had been produced to date. Bloom and Martin can now lay claim to that honor. This is, by a wide margin, the most detailed, analytically sophisticated, and balanced account of the organization yet written. Anyone who hopes to understand the group and its impact...will need to read this book."--Doug McAdam, author of Political Process and the Development of Black Insurgency, 1930-1970

"Finally! A book that clarifies the history of our movement, our aspirations, our struggles, and the bitter challenges we faced. This is a profoundly important and revealing work. Everyone who lived through these events, anyone who wants to understand the Black Panther Party, and especially the younger generations striving to shape the future, must read this book!"--Bobby Seale, Chairman, Black Panther Party

From the Inside Flap
"This is the definitive history of one of the great revolutionary organizations in the history of this country.... Let us learn deep democratic lessons and strong anti-imperial conclusions from this magisterial book!"--Cornel West, Princeton
"This is the book we've all been waiting for: the first complete history of the Black Panther Party, devoid of the hype, the nonsense, the one-dimensional heroes and villains, the myths, or the tunnel vision that has limited scholarly and popular treatments across the ideological spectrum. Bloom and Martin's riveting, nuanced, and highly original account revises our understanding of the party's size, scope, ideology, and political complexity, and offers the most compelling explanations for its ebbs and flows and ultimate demise. Moreover, they reveal with spectacular clarity that the Party's primary target was not just police brutality or urban poverty or white supremacy but U.S. Empire in all of its manifestations."--Robin D. G. Kelley, UCLA
"Bloom and Martin bring to light an important chapter in American history. They carefully mine the archival data to give us an account of the rise of the Black Panther Party, of its successes and the shoals of American politics on which it fractured. In the process they give full credit to the strategic agency of the remarkable revolutionaries at the center of the story." --Frances Fox Piven, President, American Sociological Association
"Joshua Bloom and Waldo E. Martin, Jr., have written the first comprehensive political history of the Black Panther Party. They present an unvarnished, judicious treatment of a much revered, much maligned, and widely misunderstood revolutionary organization leading the charge for 'Black Power' in the late 1960s and early 1970s. They provide persuasive answers to questions about the Party's rise and fall that others have failed to fully address. All other scholars will henceforth have to grapple with their substantial findings. General readers will find it compelling too." --Tera Hunter, Princeton
"In a stunning historical account, Joshua Bloom and Waldo Martin map the complex trajectory of the ideology and practice of the Black Panther Party. Going beyond merely chronicling 'what happened,' the authors situate the rise and fall of the Panthers within the prevailing, and constantly shifting, political climate at home and abroad. Much has been written about the Party, but Black against Empire is the definitive history of the Panthers--one that helps us rethink the very meaning of a revolutionary movement."--Michael Omi, Berkeley
"As important as the Black Panthers were to the evolution of black power, the African American freedom struggle, and, indeed, the sixties as a whole, scholarship on the group has been surprisingly thin and all too often polemical. Certainly no definitive scholarly account of the Panthers has been produced to date, or rather had been produced to date. Bloom and Martin can now lay claim to that honor. This is, by a wide margin, the most detailed, analytically sophisticated, and balanced account of the organization yet written. Anyone who hopes to understand the group and its impact on American culture and politics will need to read this book."--Doug McAdam, Stanford
Davis, University of California
"Remarkable.... As one who lived through the Panther era, I believe this book should become a standard historical work for years to come." --Tom Hayden, author of The Long Sixties: From 1960 to Barack Obama
"An essential, deeply researched, and insightful study--the best so far--of the complex history, inner workings, and conflicted legacy of the Black Panther Party as it waged its relentless battle for human rights and racial dignity in the streets of urban America." --Leon F. Litwack, President, Organization of American Historians

I thought I knew.
By M.H.
I have read a lot about the Black Panthers including most of the memoirs (Seize the Time, Taste of Power, This Side of Glory, Soul on Ice, Assata, Panther Baby) and several good books on narrower pieces of the history (Living for the City, Survival Pending Revolution, Murder of Fred Hampton). So I was looking for a big picture, and didn’t expect to learn much detail here. But I was shocked. There was something new on every page. Who knew that the FBI paid a highly placed agent (William O’Neal) to write stories in the Black Panther encouraging party members to torture suspected informants? Or that the commonly reproduced “October 1966” ten point program is actually from July 1968? Or that women Black Panthers hotly contested gender dynamics in the Party at the United Front on Fascism Conference? And even the events I was very familiar with (like the early police patrols in Oakland, or storming the Assembly in Sacramento) the authors put these in a whole new light, placing the events in a broader context and relation to one another in a way that it all makes sense.

Most important for me was the analysis. The authors show HOW the Black Panther Party built POWER, step by step. In Part I, they trace the roots of the Panthers’ political practices, and explain their initial successes patrolling the police. It’s telling that when black people figured out how to use gun laws to build political power, Reagan and the Republicans enacted laws to restrict the right to bear arms! In Part II, the authors show how the Party shifted gears once they couldn’t legally run the armed patrols any more. They go through this on all levels (theoretical discussion, lots of historical detail). I especially liked hearing about how the Party got organized in New York, Seattle, Chicago, Los Angeles, and cities across the country. It is hard to believe how quickly the Party grew. In Part III they discuss the service programs, the repression, and mobilization by allies. I hadn’t realized the breakfasts and other community programs only came about in 1969. The authors show that the Party kept growing even when the government was attacking it the hardest. The Panthers were able to sustain their armed self-defense because they attracted support from so many sources. Not just radicals! I couldn’t believe organizations like the Urban League or mainstream politicians like Willie Brown were taking real action to oppose the repression of the Panthers. So much has changed today. And I knew there were Asian, and Latino, and even white groups that had copied the Black Panther Party. But I didn’t understand how important broader allies were in organizing on the ground support for trials, and community programs, and the newspaper, and keeping the Party growing. Part IV the authors talk more about those alliances, and some of the incredible international work the Panthers did, with China, Algeria, Vietnam, Cuba.

As a long-time activist, these were the most important lessons for me. We can’t just take up arms and take over our communities. Anyone with sense knows that wouldn’t work today. But neither can we just march and sit in and demand civil rights and turn the other cheek. More black people are in jail today than were slaves before the Civil War. How can we do something about that? The authors don’t give easy answers to these questions. But they really helped me think about what it would take. If we are going to resist authority, we will be repressed. So who is going to help us face that repression?

The last few chapters where the Party unravels were the hardest part of the book for me to read. So sad that things had to come to that. But ignorance is bliss, right? I was really grateful that the book didn’t pull any punches. And I think I am convinced by the authors’ arguments that the tensions that tore the Party apart were larger than the personal and organizational conflicts through which they played out, and had a lot to do with growth of the black middle-class, and the repeal of the draft.

Thank you Drs. Martin and Bloom! Your book really changes things for me.

Gripping, Accurate, Provocative. The Black Panthers Come to Life.
By Publicagent
"You state that the Bureau under the CIP [COINTELPRO] should not attack programs of community interest such as the [Black Panther Party] "Breakfast for Children." You state that this is because many prominent "humanitarians" both white and black, are interested in the program as well as churches which are actively supporting it. You have obviously missed the point..." J. Edgar Hoover

Black Against Empire is one of the most important books of the year. With anti-gun legislation in full swing, the Occupy Movement nowhere to be found, and surviving Black Panthers still around, the first comprehensive history of the Black Panther Party could not have come at a better time. The history and political analysis provided by Martin and Bloom is fresh, compelling and inspiring.

If you talk with two people who claim to know the Panthers, it's evident how controversial they are. Their history is often disputed, and many have strong opinions about their legacy in the context of the revolutionary movement. It's well-known that J Edgar Hoover and the FBI listed the Black Panthers as the number one threat to the internal security of the United States, and sought to destroy the Party through various means, including a massive disinformation campaign. It is precisely because of this disinformation that one has to be careful when considering their source of information about the Panthers.

Black Against Empire contains over eighty pages of extensive notes from a wealth of primary sources that include memoirs, interviews, recordings, the Black Panther Newspaper, newspaper articles, audio reels, COINTELPRO documents, posters, dissertations and more. When reading the book, it immediately becomes evident that the authors know what they are talking about. A historian and sociologist by profession, Martin and Bloom spent fourteen years compiling research for this project.

The rise of the Black Panthers is handled smoothly beginning with mini-biographies of Huey Newton and Bobby Seale. The emergence of the Black Panther symbol is traced to its origins, and various black revolutionary organizations before the formation of the Panthers are highlighted. The uprisings in Watts, Detroit, and other urban areas that the media wrongfully dismisses as "riots" are described as cogent uprisings in response to excessive and racist brutality by the police.

Throughout the entire text, everything is placed in historical and political context. The successes and failures of the civil rights movement, the assassinations of Black leaders that inspired people to action, the burgeoning anti-war movement, the changing national politics, and the revolutionary movement that saw the Panthers as the vanguard are all flushed out. The Black Panthers are thus viewed as a creative and intelligent organization that meets the demands of black people where the government and the police not only failed them, but outright killed them.

Classic Black Panther tales of policing the police, escorting Betty Shabazz to the airport, and storming the courthouse in Sacramento with guns are given just enough time as to be thorough without going over extraneous details. When the Panthers expand beyond Oakland, the authors go city-by-city to Chicago, Los Angeles, New Haven, New York, Seattle and elsewhere to provide accounts of the most significant of 68 chapters across the United States.

This book retains a broad and sweeping focus throughout. The issues that it discusses, like the rise of insurgent movements, are primarily kept at a national, and international level. Local issues are discussed that involve key points of Panther history such as the shooting of Denzel Dowell in Richmond, California, only as they are relevant to the larger issues at hand. Even at 400 plus pages, it's impossible to do everybody justice, but most key Panther figures like George Jackson, Geronimo ji Jaga, and Angela Davis arise at some point or another.

A favorite part of mine is the chapter not just about the free breakfast program, but about the free shoes, free clothing, free health clinics, free schools, free ambulance, and free bussing to prisons programs that were among the greatest legacies of the Black Panther Party. The above quote from Hoover indicates just how far COINTELPRO went to discredit the Panthers. Accounts of raids on free health clinics by the police, to take one example, are described. Students of COINTELPRO know this history, but those unaware of the extent of Panther repression may be surprised at what they find.

More time is spent is time on the Black Panther's rise than their demise. This is a judicious choice since it is not their demise, which if anything sounds fairly typical, but their rise to a position of power that is truly extraordinary, and the authors argue, unparalleled. Yet the demise is handled deftly so that it's evident what remains disputed about their unraveling, and what does not. Ideological splits, government concessions, internal strife, agent provocateurs, seemingly endless court cases, imprisonment, and the changing times, are all discussed.

There are other books about the Black Panthers, but from what I can gather, this is the only truly comprehensive account. In addition to conducting their own research, and establishing new archives, the authors read every single book about the Black Panthers where not surprisingly author biases often obscured the truth. The bias here is to set the record straight, and to answer the question of why the Party rose to revolutionary stature as emphatically, briefly, and powerfully as they did.

Waldo Martin and Joshua Bloom have succeeded admirably in getting the job done.

Black Panthers, the FBI, and the Vietnam War
By Mal Warwick
When I moved to Berkeley in 1969, the Black Panther Party was in its heyday. Only three years earlier, Huey Newton and Bobby Seale had begun building the party around an image and a name they'd appropriated from other Black organizations then active in those turbulent years of the Vietnam War and exploding ghettoes. Yet before the decade of the 1970s was out, the Black Panther Party had all but disappeared. Black Against Empire, Joshua Bloom and Waldo Martin's excellent study of the Panthers and their politics, makes clear why and how they grew into such a force -- and why the party collapsed so few years later.

The pivotal event in the history of the Black Panther Party was the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. on April 4, 1968. Before that day, the Party was just one of hundreds of activist African-American organizations, most of them vanishingly small, in Black ghettoes and on university campuses all across the country. The Panthers were set apart from others by their distinctive black outfits, by carrying guns in public to defend themselves against police brutality, by their outspoken opposition to the Vietnam War, and, perhaps most of all, by their willingness to encompass people of other ethnicities. As a result, they had grabbed headlines locally and were growing at a fast pace, attracting African-Americans in their late teens and twenties who were disillusioned by the timidity of their elders in the Civil Rights Movement -- but the party's activities were largely limited to Oakland, Berkeley, and nearby cities. However, when Rev. King was murdered, the Black Panther Party quickly emerged as the leading organization nationwide with the credibility and the activist ideology that could channel the fury and the hope of young African-Americans and attract alliances with Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) and other largely non-Black radical organizations. The Party quickly began opening offices around the country -- a total of 68 cities by 1970 -- and for three years remained a powerful and ever-present force in the activist politics of the day.

Soon, however, the party's rapid decline began in earnest. Bloom and Martin emphasize two key factors -- the Panthers' establishment enemies and the shrinking U.S. engagement in Vietnam under Richard Nixon -- to which I would add a third: the explosive personality dynamics of the Panthers' leaders themselves.

The Black Panther Party's sworn enemies included the FBI, the Oakland police, and, later, police in Chicago and many other cities. J. Edgar Hoover personally led the FBI's campaign against the Panthers, introducing informers and agents provocateur to trigger violence and sow dissent within their ranks. The Bureau's efforts went so far as to hand out explosives, spread destructive rumors to undermine the marriages of Panther leaders, and arrange the assassination of key Panther activists. The Oakland police used violent and often illegal tactics, invading Panther homes and offices without search warrants and arresting individual Panthers on transparently trumped-up charges. The most egregious incident took place in Richard J. Daley's Chicago, when police, acting on information from an informer, illegally burst into an apartment in the middle of the night and murdered Fred Hampton, the local chapter leader, sleeping in his bed. All told, police murdered dozens of Panther activists around the country.

Richard Nixon played a pivotal role, too. "Nixon was the one who rolled back the draft, wound down the war, and advanced affirmative action." The cumulative effect of these strategic moves was to erode the foundation of the Panthers' support both in the Black community and among white radicals (whose popularity among young people, it became clear, was largely grounded in fear of the draft). Once regarded not just by themselves but by other self-appointed revolutionary organizations as the vanguard of the revolution, the Panthers increasingly found themselves alone as liberals attacked them and the revolution on the nation's campuses went the way of the draft. The party was officially dissolved in 1982.

So far as it goes, this analysis of the principal forces that undermined the Black Panther Party is right on target. However, I would argue that the personality dynamics of the party's leadership played a significant role as well. Judging from my own observations as well as the evidence advanced in Black Against Empire, the three leading figures in the party were all brilliant men. It's idle to speculate what roles they might have played in society had they been born white in middle-class families -- but it's clear that their life experiences as African-Americans growing up in America in the 1950s and 60s, not to mention the cruel frauds worked on them by FBI agents and informers during the late 1960s and early 70s, wreaked havoc on their mental health. Of the three, only Bobby Seale survived the Panther years whole and sane. Both Huey Newton and Eldridge Cleaver were, by all accounts, unhinged in the final years of their lives. So far as I'm concerned, no further proof is needed than the bitter feud that erupted between the two of them, which led to dangerous and sometimes violent splits within the Panther organization.

For anyone who lived through those unsettling times on the margins of the day's events, Black Against Empire is illuminating. Though I crossed paths with a number of the individuals named in the book, and we had a great many mutual friends, I was quite unaware of the Panthers' early history and of the party's years of decline. If you have any interest in East Bay history, Berkeley politics, or African-American history and politics, you'll find Black Against Empire essential reading.

Helpful suggestions across a wide range of topics
By Amazon Customer
MASTERING THE MOMMY TRACK was conceived when the Erin Flynn Jay read a story of family struggle. She relates her own struggles in raising two daughters and working in a PR firm, while her husband was unemployed. One of the strengths in Jay's book is that in each chapter she interviews (or culls from other sources) experts on the topic. Her advice is measured and realistic. She affirms that parents' first responsibility is to their family--children and the couple--hence, the slant of her title. Each chapter is a separate take, so readers cam locate an issue in the Table of Contents and tap advice on that issue.

How You Can 'Master the Mommy Track'
By Nancy R. Vecchione
As a women who wears many hats (and who sometimes wonders just how many hours it is possible to work in a single day) I thought some of you might be facing the same dilemmas. Mastering The Mommy Track: Juggling Career and Kids in Uncertain Times is a new book by Erin Flynn Jay has shown me ways to juggle and manage to keep all the balls in the air (or at least not freak out if I drop one!)

Although my children are now adults, my life is no less busy (how did that happen?) and this book addresses a lot of issues for women of all ages.

Mommy Track tells the stories of career moms trying to balance the demands of their careers, spouses and families. How do they do it all? It isn't easy, but the stories in her book show that it is doable! (With a little help from friends, family and experts)

What makes Erin an expert? She is a wife, mom and career woman who successfully juggles it all. A successful writer in her own right, Erin also works promoting other professionals and small businesses. So yes, she does know what she's talking about.

Erin also talked to other experts in a variety of fields getting their professional and personal opinions to help busy moms get a better take on how to handle their day to day lives.

In her book she tells us stories of moms facing a variety of dilemmas in modern day life. Are you a mom who feels conflicted as she drops her child off at daycare? Or a mom who works while her spouse stays home taking care of the kids? Has your family suddenly gone from a two income family to one due to layoffs? Are you having a hard time making time for you and your spouse? Mommy Track addresses the issues of being a parent and a spouse and how to maintain your financial, marital, psychological and nutritional health, and the all important time management! And perhaps best of all, Mommy Track reminds you that yes, it is OK to take time out for yourself. What more could you ask for in one small book?

Mastering the Mommy Track is a serious look at women and the stories of their lives as they struggle through the changes in our society and the economy of the early 21st century. It gives women valuable input on how to manage their home and work lives with a positive attitude toward both. This is a book you'll want to own and recommend to your friends.

Field Guide to Mammals of Southern Africa (Field Guide To... (Struik Publishers)), by Chris Stuart, Tilde Stuart

Southern Africa is home to an extraordinary wealth of mammal species: they range from the smaller, more elusive animals, such as shrews, genets, suricates and bats, to the well-known and charismatic creatures – elephant, lion, buffalo, giraffe and rhino. The region is also home to many marine species – seals, dolphins and whales – that inhabit both coastal and deeper waters.
Since it was first published in 1988, Field Guide to Mammals of Southern Africa has become the most popular guide to the mammals of the region. This extensively revised new edition will help readers identify not only the iconic larger animals, but also to clarify what would otherwise be a bewildering array of often-similar species. Colour keys make it easy to locate family groupings, while the introduction helps to put individual species into context. The text incorporates the characteristic features of each mammal, be they land- or marine-based, including typical behaviour, preferred habitat, food choices and reproduction.
Comprising 350 species accounts, 470 photographs and over 275 distribution maps, as well as selected animal–human size comparisons, spoor drawings and skull photographs, this updated guide advances our understanding of the subcontinent's mammals.

Review
Southern Africa has a wealth of mammal species, a total of 337 -- all of which are covered in this fully revised comprehensive field guide. While the term 'African mammals' conjures up the more celebrated species of elephant, lion, buffalo, leopard and rhino, it is in fact the smaller animals -- shrews, genets, suricates and bats -- that comprise the bulk of the region's mammal species. And, often overlooked but included here too is the diversity of marine mammals -- seals, whales and dolphins -- that are found in our oceans. This new edition of Field Guide to Mammals of Southern Africa has been extensively revised to include the most recent research in line with new findings and new taxonomy. Up-to-date information, revised distribution maps and new images (where available) have been combined in a modern, full-color layout. Color-coding has been introduced according family groupings and spoor and size icons are included for quick reference with each mammal entry. Another new feature is the inclusion of skulls, grouped at the back of the book for easy comparison. In addition to detailed descriptions of each species, the text offers insight into key identification characters, typical behavior, preferred habitat, food choice and reproduction. IAN'S RECOMMENDATION: Anyone with an interest in the mammals of the region will find this Stuart guide useful.

Extensively revised since the 3rd ed. (2001), this book by C. Stuart and T. Stuart (founders, African-Arabian Wildlife Research Centre) is the definitive photographic guide to the mammals of southern Africa. Standing in contrast to those regional guides that emphasize only Africa’s larger mammals, it covers the rich diversity of small mammals: golden moles, sengis, hedgehogs and shrews, bats, hares and rabbits, and rodents. The introduction considers the major biotic zones, mammal identification, and conservation and management in southern Africa. Following are concise accounts of mammal families and subfamilies, color-coded to facilitate their location within the text. Especially useful are figures depicting the tail, facial conformation, and ear conformation of different bat groups. Identification is based on 470 excellent photographs emphasizing distinguishing features, along with 275 distribution maps. The 350 species accounts cover description, distribution, habitat, behavior, food, and reproduction. More than just a field guide, this concise reference nicely complements the comprehensive The Mammals of the Southern Africa Subregion, rev. by J. D. Skinner and C. T. Chimiimba (3rd ed., CH, Sept’06, 44-0035). Inclusion of the usually overlooked small mammals make this book a valuable addition to mammalian libraries. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Lower-level undergraduates and above; general readers.

This is truly an excellent book,a joy to look at,packed with lots of information. However it is not really a book suitable to be taken in the field, the authors smaller book mammals of southern, central and eastern africa would be a better book to take into the field. The authors really know the animals and their passion for the subject comes out in their writing.

Field Guide to the Mammals of Southern Africa
By Shawna A. Karpovich
This book is nicely organized. The animals are separated into their prospective families. This is especially helpful for the scientific minded reader. While on safari if I see an animal that is most likely a carnivore, I will know exactly where to look it up.
The pictures are very clear and the description focuses on the distinguishing characters of each species. The descriptions are very logical and easy to follow... i.e. the blaze on the nose of this antelope is continuous therefore, it is species A, where the blaze on the nose of the next antelope (which looks just like species A) is not continuous, therefore it is species B.

A well written Guide Full of Information, with Excellent Photos.. NOTE UPDATED edition 2015 is even better.,
By Dr
I have both is version and the UPDATED version from 2015.
The 2015 version has all the features the Stuart's are well known for. It is fuller.
The pictures are excellent and at least to me there seems to be more if them-- hard to say how much more but enough to really please me.
Title
"Stuart's Feild guide to
Mammals of Southern Africa including Angola, Zambia and Malawi "
Authors as above.
It is well worth considering.
I have reviewed it.

I bought the Kindle version of this book.
I am viewing it on an IPad with a Retinal Screen.
The Mammals are grouped by Families-- the zoological Name is Given but examples of the Common Name are Given.
This gives quick ascess to the information
The text is fairly full. It covers identification, and details about the animal, whether they live in groups etc etc
There is a location map for where each animal is found
Often the animal is shown next to a full grown human to give you an idea of how high it stands of the ground.
Footprints are given where available with a scale in mm
Horn development by age are shown for Wildebeest and some Antelope
The photos are excellent.
Some species only get one one , others more
There is cross referencing in the text which takes you to the referenced spot.
I have learned a lot from looking through the book-- at present I am trying to get the various Antelope and related species into my head , so that I can identify them, and fit the right information to each group
Highly recommended

The World of Persian Literary Humanism, by Hamid Dabashi

Humanism has mostly considered the question “What does it mean to be human?” from a Western perspective. Dabashi asks it anew from a non-European perspective, in a groundbreaking study of 1,400 years of Persian literary humanism. He presents the unfolding of this vast tradition as the creative and subversive subconscious of Islamic civilization.

Review
Dabashi is one of the world's most well-versed and learned scholars of Persian history and culture, and this book could only be written by someone of his intellectual stature who shows a mastery of Persian literature over a thousand years. His creative and engaging narrative carries the reader through a literary odyssey of great geographic breadth and skillful analysis. (Firoozeh Kashani-Sabet, University of Pennsylvania)

This is a study of profound erudition, deep historical and literary knowledge, and professional acumen. Dabashi marshals an impressive amount of historical material blended into a wide historical narrative. (Arshin Adib-Moghaddam)

In this powerfully challenging book, Hamid Dabashi not only pays tribute to the achievements of such great Persian writers as Ferdowsi and Sa'di, who expressed a subversively humanistic vision in counterpoint to the transcendental Islamic scholasticism of the past, but he also shines his intellectual spotlight on influential occidental thinkers ranging from Kant to Said, whose humanism, whether philosophical or literary, fell short of true universality. In a masterful critique of the Eurocentrism he sees as being present, if masked, in the teaching of Comparative Literature, he rescues Persian literature from the 'overextended narratives of Orientalism and ethnic nationalism' and shows how its vibrant aesthetic and spiritual qualities find expression in the work of contemporary writers, filmmakers, and artists. This important work of cultural history has urgent contemporary relevance. (Malise Ruthven)

Elegant as well as passionate, Hamid Dabashi's scholarly writings always have a revelatory quality. Yet again he uncovers, in his new book, an astonishing new world for English readers. (Pankaj Mishra)

In this fascinating study of the metaphysical concerns of Persian literature, Dabashi presents Persian adab as a movement heretical to the ideological dispositions of Islamic empires. He traces the morality that informs the adab of the Persian language, and shows how a sustained history of a millennium and a half created an amorphous literary subconscious that remained irreducible to any religious identity. A landmark work that shall nurture all future discourse on the subject. (Musharraf Ali Farooqi)

In The World of Persian Literary Humanism, Hamid Dabashi revealed, with his usual brilliance, yet more aspects of a sophisticated culture to an Anglophone readership. (Pankaj Mishra New Statesman 2012-11-23)

Dabashi's effortless, capacious erudition is obvious all throughout. Even his offhand comments about Ferdowsi's Shahnameh or Muhammad Iqbal's Asrar-e Khodi (and dozens of other canonical Persian works) are uniformly brilliant. (Steve Donoghue Open Letters Monthly 2012-11-19)

Dabashi provides a rich and varied account of classical Persian literature. Such commanding figures as Ferdowsi, the 11th century poet of the 'Shahnameh,' or Book of Kings, one of the world's great epics, stand alongside the mystical lyrical poets Hafiz and Rumi, as well as the earthier Sa'di. It is one of Dabashi's accomplishments to demonstrate the unusual continuity of the Persian literary tradition which, despite political upheavals and stylistic revolutions--free verse is the norm in contemporary Persian poetry--remains strong even in the teeth of brutal governmental repression. (Eric Ormsby Wall Street Journal 2013-01-02)

Dabashi writes a thoughtful, comprehensive examination on how best to describe Persian literature's 1,400-year history. (W. L. Hanaway Choice 2013-04-01)

About the Author
Hamid Dabashi is Hagop Kevorkian Professor of Iranian Studies and Comparative Literature at Columbia University.

Poetry and prose. Universal humanism.
By SInohey
This is a timely book that introduces a largely unknown and misunderstood culture in the West, written by one of the leading academics in this field. Nowadays most Westerners view Iran as the land of hostage takers, a theocracy ruled by belligerent mullahs, supporters and exporters of terrorism. Some in this country may be familiar with Avicenna (Ibn Sina) and Umar Khayyam, the latter through the translation of Edward Fitzgerald, in the late 19th century, of his "Rubai'yat (quatrains in Persian). But Persian culture and humanism is much more vast with roots that begin about 1400 years ago. It could be argued that Persian culture had the strongest influence on the flourishing of the Golden Age of Islam, especially during the Abbasid Caliphate. The Muslim Arab conquerors of the Sasanid Empire (in AD 625) were, themselves, eventually invaded by the sophisticated and mature culture of Persia. Arabic language, customs and religion initially overwhelmed the local inhabitants; but Persian identity, instead of disappearing, coopted and transformed the Arabic culture while maintaining its innate uniqueness. Among the many examples, the author describes the work of Sibawayhi (AD 760-796), the foremost Arabic grammarian, or the philosophy of Razi (AD 865-925) or the polymath Ibn Sina (980-1037) and Ibn al-Muqaffa who all wrote their work in flawless Arabic and overcame "Arabic literary imperialism". Professor Dabashi eloquently describes the works of early poets Ferdowsi, Saadi, Rumi, Hafiz and Khayyam and continues through time until the 20th century to the prose and poetry of Shamlou, a contemporary of Mirza and Sepehri.

The eight chapters of the 327 pages book take the reader on a journey that begins about 1400 years ago and progresses chronologically from the early kingdoms of the Saffarids, the Seljuks, Tamerlane's conquest of Persia and ultimately ends at the revolution of 1979. Extra attention is focused on the Safavids who ruled throughout the 16th and 17th centuries and established Shiite Islam firmly in Persia. The book clearly demonstrates the erudition of its author about the subject matter, it is a complicated work made more opaque by the writer's penchant for academic verbosity. It is replete with obfuscating phraseology.. "By transcending transcendence he (Azim-abadi Bidel) turns his poetry into an intuition of transcendence in and of itself " and word gymnastics.. "diverse and diversifying," "deferred and differed defiance." Chapters are peppered with bizarre jargon.. "miasmatic, othered, wordling, autonormative, counterdiscourse ."

The professor then explains the term Adab, from the original Arabic, which means politeness, courtesy and social ethics but has been given further meaning by Persian authors to include literary abilities and humanism; and then goes on to explain that Adab is "a narrative institution unto itself, irreducible to any metaphysical certainty" "a literary decoy, "a counterdiscourse that opposed all other discourses of power," and on and on ad nauseaum.

As a humanist, I really wanted to like this book, hoping to visit some of medieval Muslim writers whom I had previously read in their original Arabic. But the unbalance of the writing, with some parts flowing smoothly while others almost incomprehensibly befuddled and obscured by academic-speak, caused my interest to wax and wane.
The author, a protégé of the late Edward Said, is an admitted Marxist and a strong supporter of Arab/Muslim independence movements. I found his gratuitous snipe at "western orientalism" that has "alienated and othered? Persian literature," ill placed and unnecessary in this compendium.

In summary, The World of Persian Literary Humanism is a great reference book for academics and/or for a reader willing to trudge through a thick fog of verbiage for the pleasure of contemplating the ancient yet vibrant, multifaceted, richly embroidered cultural tapestry of Persian humanism, offered by someone with an almost encyclopedic knowledge of the subject.

Academic but deep
By Duke
I can't say that this book is easy light reading! In fact, the book by its very subject matter is quite dry. That being said, this is a book about Persian Literary Humanism, so you should know what you are getting into :)
Anyhow, the actual content of the book is very well written and provides a wealth of information about an important and overlooked area of scholarship. I actually purchased the book because of my own research interests regarding rhetoric and I found that there were a lot of interesting and worthwhile connections. So, if you think that you might be interested in the subject matter--I would certainly recommend it!

Seems that English or English literary humanism needed its puberty so that this masterpiece could be written, by which I feel drunk of seeing a thoroughly turning every stone of the Persian literary humanism through the work of Dabashi.

A Concise History of Mathematics: Fourth Revised Edition (Dover Books on Mathematics), by Dirk J. Struik

This compact, well-written history — first published in 1948, and now in its fourth revised edition — describes the main trends in the development of all fields of mathematics from the first available records to the middle of the 20th century. Students, researchers, historians, specialists — in short, everyone with an interest in mathematics — will find it engrossing and stimulating.
Beginning with the ancient Near East, the author traces the ideas and techniques developed in Egypt, Babylonia, China, and Arabia, looking into such manuscripts as the Egyptian Papyrus Rhind, the Ten Classics of China, and the Siddhantas of India. He considers Greek and Roman developments from their beginnings in Ionian rationalism to the fall of Constantinople; covers medieval European ideas and Renaissance trends; analyzes 17th- and 18th-century contributions; and offers an illuminating exposition of 19th century concepts. Every important figure in mathematical history is dealt with — Euclid, Archimedes, Diophantus, Omar Khayyam, Boethius, Fermat, Pascal, Newton, Leibniz, Fourier, Gauss, Riemann, Cantor, and many others. For this latest edition, Dr. Struik has both revised and updated the existing text, and also added a new chapter on the mathematics of the first half of the 20th century. Concise coverage is given to set theory, the influence of relativity and quantum theory, tensor calculus, the Lebesgue integral, the calculus of variations, and other important ideas and concepts. The book concludes with the beginnings of the computer era and the seminal work of von Neumann, Turing, Wiener, and others.
"The author's ability as a first-class historian as well as an able mathematician has enabled him to produce a work which is unquestionably one of the best." — Nature Magazine.

About the Author

Dirk J. Struik: A Birthday Celebration
Dirk. J. Struik was born in Rotterdam in 1894 and spent most of his teaching career at MIT; he retired in 1960. His Lectures on Classical Differential Geometry, reprinted by Dover in 1988, is still a highly regarded classic, as is his Concise History of Mathematics, one of the first Dover original books in mathematics and first published by Dover in 1948, which reached its current fourth revised edition in 1987.

Professor Struik died on October 21, 2000, twenty-one days after his 106th birthday. Professor. Thomas F. Banchoff of Brown University, longtime friend and colleague of Dr. Struik and an advisor to Dover for the past 30 years, here tells the story of his friend's memorable 100th birthday celebration:

"Dirk Struik was 97 at the time I asked him what he planned to do on his hundredth birthday. He said that his family always had a party, but I then thought of a bright idea, a public celebration lecture where he would sit in the front row and hear people from his past say laudatory things about his contributions. I blurted out, 'What about a lecture on your hundredth birthday?' Without hesitation, he agreed, and that was the start of a grand event.

"Well over two hundred fifty people attended his lecture, about a third who knew him from his mathematical writings, another third acquainted with his work in history and politics, and, according to one wag, the rest wanting to see a hundred-year-old man stand up for an hour. Joan Richards gave a sterling introduction covering the many aspects of his long career. The talk itself was full of personal reflections about the characteristics of these almost legendary figures in modern mathematics and the audience was most appreciative.

"Dirk Struik went on giving lectures, in the United States and in the Netherlands for the next four years. He was a good friend to many people in his long life, and his books on so many subjects will continue to provide inspiration and encouragement to generations of students and teachers." — Tom Banchoff

Pocket size Bible of History of Mathematics
By Joel Sanchez Gonzalez
If you are looking for a book that clearly describes the evolution of mathematics, you don't need to try more, this book is for you.
Struik's book, "A Concise History of Mathematics", is a well documented book with the main contributions, dates, and names of the people involved in the development of mathematics from their ancients origins until the first half of the 20th century.
Struik's style of writing is clear and, how the title of the book says, concise, highlighting the relevant discoveries made in the field and relating them in order to give a better understanding of the subject.
Reading is easy for all people because Struik avoids to use formulas where it is not necessary, focusing more in the works of the great mathematicians and describing them of a comprehensible way.
Another excellent feature of the book is the great bibliography that contains, with a many references to other books not only in English, but in other languages also.
Somebody would hope to find more mathematical demonstrations and more illustrations, but this is not the objective of the book, contents in a single volume of 228 pages are the most important facts of the history of the mathematics, therefore, the relationship between cost and content is excellent.
A Concise History of Mathematics is a classical book, written by a world wide recognized author, of a clear and concise manner.
All people interested in this area of the mathematics must have this book in their shelf.

Small but surprisingly informative
By Alan U. Kennington
I bought this book by Struik 10 years ago and read it 8 years ago. I was not expecting much because it is such a small book in comparison to other books on mathematics history. However, I was pleasantly surprised. Struik managed to include many historical observations which I have not seen in ten or so other books on mathematics history.

Chapter 1 contains speculations on mathematics in the Old Stone Age (which we now call the palaeolithic), which is always very dangerous due to the lack of real evidence, but it's entertaining to speculate anyway.

Chapter 2 covers ancient Egyptian and Babylonian mathematics. This is covered in very much greater detail, and more perspicaciously, by Boyer and Merzbach. Chapter 3 covers ancient Greek mathematics in 27 pages. (Perhaps one could observe that the history of ancient Greek mathematics has been done to death. Everyone who can afford pen and paper seems to have written about it.) Chapter 4 does medieval Arabic mathematics in 12 pages. Chapter 5 does European Renaissance mathematics in 16 pages. Then there's a short chapter each for the 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. It's all extremely brief!

One of the greatest strengths of this book is the references to the literature. I have followed many of these "links" in the last 8 years, and it is beneficial to follow them, even though many of them are difficult to obtain.

One of the little surprises in this book is on page 82, where it is explained that Oresme introduced graphs such as we generally think of as Cartesian coordinates, graphing variable Y against variable X, more than 250 years before Descartes. I later found this interesting fact mentioned also in Boyer and Merzbach, pages 239 and 319-320. (In fact, Descartes apparently never used Cartesian coordinates at all.)

Conclusion:
This book has a good quantity and quality of references to the academic literature. It contains many insights which are not found much in other history books. It's short, but quite densely packed with information. You might like to skip over the first speculative chapter though.

excellent context
By Steven T. Cannon
This is a particularly clear-minded view of the progression of mathematical history. The book serves to convince that understanding math (as possibly opposed to science) requires a knowledge of its history. The great advance of twentieth century mathematics is its achievement of higher levels of abstraction. But without the history this abstraction is just puff. This book leaves off at 1945.

From Booklist
White’s engrossing novel tells the story of three seemingly disparate characters, Alice Stone, an African American girl growing up in Emancipation Township, North Carolina, whose life is torn apart by racism; Bobby Banks, a gay man from Decatur, Georgia, ostracized by his family and friends; and Amelia Brighton, a well-to-do Connecticut housewife whose life is turned upside down by her husband’s infidelity and a mysterious family secret. As the novel unfolds, these three are drawn together at a tiny café in New York City. Inspired by the stories of chefs Edna Lewis and Scott Peacock, A Place at the Table is the story of troubled souls finding their way and making a place for themselves through the magic of the big city and a love of cooking. With unforgettable characters, rich detail, and seamless narration, White’s new novel (after A Soft Place to Land, 2010) will long remain in the reader’s mind and memory, a gentle reminder of the importance of acceptance in all its forms and the myriad connections that surround us. --Carol Gladstein

Review
“The greatest Southern literature — from Faulkner on down — has dealt squarely with the broken pieces of the South. But White does this difficult work firmly in the modern age. The topics of classical Southern writing — race, class, religion — are all there, but she explores our more modern challenges, such as the acceptance of gay sons and daughters into our families, with a directness and courage that would do Flannery O’Connor proud….White has the remarkable ability — shared by only the greatest storytellers — to let her characters be who they are, for better or worse. Her writing never leads the reader to conclusions; it lets us draw our own.” (The Bitter Southerner)

For fans of The Help, a tale of Southern exiles--an older black woman (based on legendary chef Edna Lewis) and a young gay man--who find each other in New York City through their love of down-home cooking." (Good Housekeeping)

“Tasty…fascinating…each character is a convincing creation…a pleasure.” (Associated Press)

"White is convinced that coincidence doesn't exist, that we come together becasue there is a grand plan always at work. Rendering that truth so confidently and effortlessly--that is White's magic. Wanting each of us to find a place at the table--that is White's gift." (The Anniston Star)

“Great expectations follow when a book opens with three distinct, seemingly unrelated story lines because you know somehow they all will be lashed together by the end….White’s ability to write with a believable voice from three such disparate perspectives keeps the “How?” at bay, while providing a sounding board for social issues that continue to confront us today.” (Minneapolis Star Tribune)

A Place at the Table is the story of troubled souls finding their way and making a place for themselves through the magic of the big city and a love of cooking. With unforgettable characters, rich detail, and seamless narration, White's new novel will long remain in the reader's mind and memory, a gentle reminder of the importance of acceptance in all it's forms and the myriad connections that surround us." (Booklist)

"Beautifully told...White's characters are drawn with tremendous care and precision....perfectly observed." (Atlanta)

"Engaging...a story of acceptance, of finding oneself, and of healing." (The Roanoke Times)

"In this latest from an emerging Southern literary voice…food, perspective cookbooks, and Southern influences link characters before they discover a deeper connection through guarded secrets from the past. White’s prose is graceful and evocative.” (Publishers Weekly)

"Beautifully written...inspiring." (San Francisco/Sacramento Book Review)

"No writer should be able to write smoothly and cleanly from three very different perspectives about lost love, betrayal, pound cake, fear, family ties, racism, Baptists, "the other," Episcopalians, the south, and New York. But Susan Rebecca White has--and without a false note nor a single sentimental pink bow. All this in her new and best novel yet: A Place at the Table. The story is suspenseful, surprising in the best way, and ultimately resounding. It's so good I wish I could tell you more about it. The story will bring you face to face with all sorts of demons and lovely things--and with some very real people whom you just may recognize as family." (Clyde Edgerton author of The Night Train)

"Susan Rebecca White is a first rate talent whose work is like good bread; it rises, and it leaves us filled. A Place at the Table is a love story written for expats and orphans, for all who seek home and find it in the most beautiful, the most unlikely place. This is a glorious novel, told in a pitch perfect voice. I love this book." (Joshilyn Jackson, author of A Grown-Up Kind of Pretty )

“A Place at the Table reads like a master chef's five course meal: each section makes its own delicious sense, but taken all together the intertwining stories in this novel create something uniquely magical. Susan Rebecca White made me think, made me cry, made my jaw drop, made me laugh out loud. A story of outsiders in this world, this fantastic book defies convention in plot, characterization, and even narrative structure, to forge something amazing in its pages: new identities, relationships you have not seen before, new stories, characters you will never forget. Like a brilliant new recipe: it works! Savor this confident storytelling -- you'll know you're in good hands from the first page. A book you'll devour quickly and then want to share with friends!” (Lydia Netzer, author of Shine Shine Shine )

“Susan Rebecca White creates a world as exact as a documentary film and as lyrically imagined as a poem, moving seamlessly between the voices of three disparate characters whose lives connect in surprising and satisfying ways. She has a remarkable ear for dialogue and gift for crafting moments—both big and small—that reveal humanity in all its awkward, muddled splendor. A Place at the Table stayed with me long after I turned the last page.” (Karen Abbott, author of American Rose )

"A Soft Place to Land is a beautiful story of the complicated love between two sisters. It's smart, funny, moving and wise. I simply did not want to put it down. If you have a sister, you're going to miss her, and if you don't have one, you'll wish that you did. Book clubs: This is your next pick. I loved this book. Susan Rebecca White is a wonderful writer." (Kathryn Stockett author of The Help)

Like a Well-Cooked Meal
By Mary Elizabeth
I have loved all of Susan Rebecca White's books, and A Place at the Table may be her best yet. The story follows three fascinating and very different characters whose individual lives we become engrossed in, sometimes over many years, as we wait to discover how they will find each other and forge connections. I confess I love books in which people eat well, and this is a narrative bursting with delectable-sounding food, not just in a way that makes us hungry while reading but also that reminds us of how food serves to bring people together while meeting a range of emotional needs. There's a deftly handled surprise at the end that you won't see coming, for a fully satisfying reading experience. Highly recommended, especially for book clubs!

Could Not Put it Down!
By S. Marcus
It was such a pleasure to be lost in the world of this book. Truly epic in scope, this book takes you from North Carolina in the 1920's to New York City in the 1980's all with such beautifully written details. I got so attached to the characters of Alice, Bobby, and Amelia that I wasn't ready to leave them at the end of the book. I read this book in one sitting, and nearly missed my train stop I was so engrossed!

Top read for summer
By Jessica Handler
Susan Rebecca White's first two books are gems; insightful, warm, and eminently readable. Now, in her third novel, she expands her story-telling territory across generations and families, connected by food (yes, there are recipes in the book!), love, and self-discovery.

"A Place at the Table" is delicious.
