Sideline Scandals

SASHA
I turned my upper body to camera two, allowed my eyes to focus, and flashed my dazzling smile. This was when I was at my very best. The camera loved me, and I made sure to show my love right back.

Most of my time was spent at the KTLA Studios located on Sunset Boulevard, between Van Ness and Bronson Avenues. In addition to The Sasha Davenport Show, Judge Judy, was also taped there. Although my show was taped in one of the twenty-three studios, we only used a small section since I didn’t have a live studio audience.

I glanced up at the lighting grid that was suspended from the studio’s high ceiling. It held various colorful light fixtures, but the one that provided a spotlight for me, cast a soft yellow hue. It beamed down on me and kept me warm while we taped the show in the freezing studio. I loved what the lighting did for my complexion on tape. It helped add to my overall polished appearance, which I worked hard to maintain.

I had gotten used to the feel of the Vaseline that helped my lips glide effortlessly across my sparkling white veneers, so my smile was always camera-ready and perfect. I batted my real mink lashes and began to speak.

“So, I’m leaving y’all with this as we gear up for the next NFL season: There’s tons going on behind the scenes. You have no clue!” I winked. “But that’s why I’m here! I’m your girl, and you already know, I’ve got unprecedented access.”

I crooked my index finger at the camera as if to summon it closer.

“Shhhh.” I used that same finger to tap my pursed glossy lips.

“Between you and me, my sources have confirmed that Los Angeles Sea Lions Head Coach Taylor Almond’s new staff will only consist of two familiar faces. That means only two of his assistants are returning! Can you say clean house?” I paused for effect and widened my eyes.

“Now, I don’t know about you,” I said, “but I, for one, knew this was coming. I mean, think about it. After all the drama that happened off the field last season, I can understand why Coach Taylor felt the need to make such drastic sweeping changes. Well, this year, we’re gonna keep our eyes on a few key players, and hopefully, the coaches and their wives will leave the drama to the plays on the field. Stay with us. I’ll be right back after this short break and a message from one of our sponsors.”

“Sasha, you good? You’ve got two minutes,” the director said through my earpiece. That was his way of letting me know I had time, if I wanted, to grab a quick glass of juice, water, or run to the ladies’ room.

I looked up at the camera and nodded. I was gonna stay put.

“Okay. Cool,” he said.

I needed to use the bathroom, but since we were nearly done taping the show, I figured it’d be smarter to wait. A couple of minutes later, the sound of the director’s countdown stopped my thoughts. I focused in on the correct camera and waited to hear my cue.

“And we’re back in five, four, three, two . . . ” The floor director pointed at me, and on cue, I began to speak.

“Thanks for staying with us. Well, that’s it for this week. Remember, I AM Saaaaasha Davenport! There’s no one better. I am fierce, fantabulous, and very famous. Until next time, sweethearts, Muah!”

I made a wide sweeping motion with my arm and gave the camera my signature palm kiss. I smiled until the director yelled the magic words in my earpiece.

“We’re clear. Great job, Sasha!”

The floor crew, which consisted of two camera operators, and a floor director, broke out in applause, and I hopped off the bar-stool we used for my closing monologue. The Sasha Davenport Show was going well, but lately I’d felt myself becoming bored. I needed more excitement. It wasn’t that the thrill was gone or anything like that, but I felt like it was time for me to step things up.

Those were neither new nor sudden thoughts for me. From day one, my plan was to use this show as a stepping stone to bigger and better things. The problem was, I had become comfortable and stopped striving to get to the next level.

“Thanks, guys,” I said as I made my way off the set. I cut through the control room, which is the nerve center of the television station, to get to the long hallway that led to my dressing room that also served as my office.

“Thanks, guys,” I repeated.

I saw video of myself on one of the many monitors, but didn’t stare too long because I didn’t want anyone to think I was trying to nit-pick. The director, sound engineer, and video editor, barely looked up from their work as I slipped in. I knew the drill and left them to their work.

The moment I walked inside my office, my cell phone rang. I told myself that was part of the problem, too. Each time I began to think about what it might take to go to the next level, something distracted me, and I never revisited my plans.

I vowed not to allow that to happen this time as I greeted the caller. “This is Saaaasha,” I sang.

“Sasha, you don’t know me, but I’ve got some information that you might be able to use on that little show of yours,” the caller said.

“Umph, well, if I don’t know you, how did you get my number, and what makes you think your information is of any use to me and my little show?”

The woman’s hearty laugh made me pull the phone away from my ear.

“Listen, I may not know you, but trust, dah-lin,’ I know your kind,” she said.

I didn’t know whether to be offended or sit back and listen to what she had to say. “You know my kind, huh? And what kind might that be?”

“Well, honestly, I didn’t think it’d be this hard. But whatever. If you wanna play it like that, I’ll hold on to my information. I guess you’ll have to run to play catch up and chase the story like everyone else once it breaks,” she said.

People like this caller made me sick. I made a mental note to check my producer slash assistant because I didn’t have time to be bogged down with this kind of foolishness. Everybody and their mama thought they had a line to some good exclusive hot gossip, until they realized I didn’t pay for that type of information. And I was certain this time was no exception.

“Besides, I shoulda known you was one of them ol’ stuck-up—”

“Oh, no you didn’t!” I snapped and cut her off. “How did you say you got my number again?”

“I didn’t say,” she answered.

I frowned. By now, I was pissed and wondered what could be done about these freaks who thought it was cool to pay $39.95 to get anybody’s cell phone number off the Internet. I was about to check her when there was a quick knock at my door before it opened. My producer, McKenzie Fields, slipped into the dressing room.

“Hey, what’s wrong?” she asked.

I guess the scowl on my face must’ve told her immediately there was a problem.

“You know what, I don’t have time for games. If you have a legitimate show or story idea, you need to go through the proper channels like everybody else. Regardless of how you got my number, here’s a bit of advice, it is tacky and classless to use a stranger’s number out of context,” I said.

McKenzie moved closer. “Who are you talking to?” she asked.

The caller screamed, “I know your ball-chasing, gold-diggin’, opportunist behind ain’t trying to give me no lessons on class and tact!” She laughed. “Especially when we know you ain’t got an ounce of either one!” She laughed louder like it was all she could do to try and catch her breath.

I sucked my teeth and pressed the END button on my cell phone. Then, I turned my anger to McKenzie. She needed to handle this kind of mess. I had other things on my mind, and filtering out the fans from the freaks was way beneath my pay scale.

“McKenzie,” I said.

“Who was that?” she insisted.

“Yeah, that’s exactly what I wanted to talk to you about.” I pointed toward the chair. “Sit, please.”

Drama, Drama and more Drama
By DaFortner
: Sideline Scandals is the sequel to Football Widows and it came with drama, drama, drama. In this sequel we meet back up with Sasha Davenport and her quest to rise up in fame with a reality show. She sets her sights on the star quarterback of the Sea Lions and devises a plan to move in on this player and figure a way to get rid of his wife, a member of the Football Widows club. Next Tatayna is receiving letters with unsettling information about her husband as well as dealing with girlfriend's issues and her own thoughts. Jerri is on house arrest and living under the same roof as her estranged husband, who also took out a restraining order against her. They are in the middle of divorce proceedings. Last up is Eliza, a hard worker setting up interviews with stars and key players. She is under pressure with a self-absorbed boss who takes the credit for Eliza's hard work.

To say this book was packed with drama is an understatement. Sasha Davenport's drive did not allow for having a heart when she set out to find a husband for her reality show. Tatayna had drama with the numerous letters, not to mention she allowed her best friend's view to infiltrate and make the situation worse. Uncovering the originator of the letters went to serious lengths that was really crazy. Jeri's situation was very bizarre and the outcome was not expected and still a mystery as why there was change of heart. The antics she and husband did to each other were quite entertaining and drama filled. Lastly, Eliza's boss Poppy really needed a reality check. It is amazing how Eliza remained employed. This is my first book my Ms. Tucker and after understanding some of the background of these characters she a fine job with their development. Especially portraying Tatayna's husband as a star player who at some points in this story was naïve that I wanted to slap him. The story flowed well but at times, with the flashbacks, a reader could get lost if they have not read the first installment. Again this a packed with drama and was an okay read.

Let The Chips Fall
By Teresa Beasley
Four ladies and the trouble they bring is what readers will discover in Sideline Scandals by Pat Tucker. Jerri and her husband, Jason are going through a messy divorce while still living under the same roof. Jerri is very jealous and being on house rest limits her movements. When an incident occurs at their home, Jason and Jerri may have to call a truce.

Tatyana is married to Dax Becall, whom she hopes will retire and take a lighter position in the sporting industry. Tatyana’s friend, Pam comes to visit and Tatyana makes the mistake of telling her too much of the Becall’s business. Pam takes it upon herself to speak her mind, which causes a drift between Dax and Tatayana. Will Tatyana recover from a possible misunderstanding?

Sasha Davenport founder of the Football Wives Club is now hosting her own talk show. Sasha wants more attention and decides to create a plot that is made for reality television. Sasha will do whatever it takes and does not care who she uses or what she destroys in the process as long as she is the one coming out on top. Will Sasha get more than she bargained for?

Eliza is the crisis management specialist whose boss is very overbearing. Being in the public relations business is tough enough and Poppy Montgomery does not make it any easier. Poppy’s last tactics land Eliza right in the middle of some foolishness that Poppy has created. Will Eliza find her way out?

What I Did Not Like: I noticed that some areas of the story reflected a couple of well-known celebrity’s issues in the media now.

What I Did Like: Sideline Scandals was full of drama, exciting and entertaining. These ladies attract trouble in more ways than one. The characters were well-developed and represented a consistent storyline with smooth transitions. Readers will be able to relate to the mischief displayed throughout the book. This author continues to write books that will have readers continuously turning pages. I recommend Sideline Scandals to others.

Yes, Absolutely!
By OOSA Online Book Club
Sasha Davenport is not only still on the scene, she has her own show, The Sasha Davenport show. The Football Widows Club is still up and running, but now she’s ready to step into some bigger stilettos; reality TV style. While Sasha may be entertaining, she doesn’t have that thing that reality TV is looking for. Determined to get a crew of cameras to follow her all over the place, Sasha has set a plan in motion, and whoever gets hurt just has to deal with it.

Jerri and Jason Nelson are involved in a scandalous divorce. They both are still living in the same residence and doing whatever they can to get under the other’s skin. Jason plays for the Los Angeles Sea Lions and has been unable to keep his marriage vows. Jerri’s jealousy has caused her to act out, and now she’s on house arrest. When a plan backfires, the squabbling pair thinks that maybe it’s time to start over.

Tatyana and Dax Becall have been married for 10 years. They’ve only been in Los Angeles for two years. Tatyana was looking forward to Dax’s transition from being a football player to hopefully co-hosting a football show. She’d seen her share of desperate women, but lately she’d been receiving anonymous letters from a 23-year-old claiming to be Dax’s mistress. At first she didn’t think much of the letters and never told Dax about them. But when her best friend, Pam comes for a visit, she shares them with her. Pam is insistent that they confront Dax. It doesn’t help that Sasha, from the Football Widows Club, is calling her house.

Eliza Carter works in the Sea Lions Public Relations office. Her job is basically to squash rumors, get the players on TV, and help to maintain a positive image. An opportunity arises where she can get two of their players on The Sasha Davenport Show. Poppy McDaniel, her evil boss, is demanding that she makes it happen. While jumping through hoops on both ends, Eliza becomes caught up in Poppy’s scheme.

SIDELINE SCANDAL like its predecessor FOOTBALL WIDOWS is just okay. Tucker knows how to build drama. Readers are expecting fourth and goal, but there are too many penalties. With flags all over the field, the drama fumbles from one character to the other. Just as you get to the 1-yard line expecting a touchdown, you’re blindsided.

This book could’ve been superbowl good. Four characters with arousing storylines, unfortunately, they aren’t taking place simultaneously. Parts of the story are happening, while others have days in between, which make the story awkward. Lying, cheating, conniving, and jealousy attract you, but as the story draws to an end, Tucker switches to telling instead of showing. After being invested for 300 pages, you want to understand the who, what, when, where, why, and how. Instead, you feel as if you’re on the losing side.

A Girl of the Limberlost (Dover Children's Classics), by Gene Stratton-Porter

Rejected by her embittered mother and scorned by her classmates, Elnora Comstock seeks consolation in nature amid the wilds of eastern Indiana's Limberlost Swamp. Teeming with danger as well as beauty, the vast marshland offers Elnora an unexpected way to build a better life.
Gene Stratton-Porter's A Girl of the Limberlost has captivated readers since its initial appearance in 1909. Its realistic characters are headed by an intelligent, independent heroine who has served as a positive role model for generations. Its portrait of Elnora's blossoming friendship with a young man who shares her joy in nature depicts a pure romance, rooted in shared interests and mutual respect. Written by a popular Midwestern author of the early twentieth century, this is a book to cherish.

From the Back Cover
A Girl of the Limberlost is unquestionably the most cherished books. It is the timeless story of an impoverished young girl, Elnora Comstock, growing up on the edge of the Limberlost swamp, and in order to pay for her education, she collects moths.

About the Author
Gene Stratton-Porter (1863–1924) was an American author, amateur naturalist, wildlife photographer, and one of the earliest women to form a movie studio and production company. She wrote some best-selling novels and well-received columns in national magazines, such as McCalls. Her works were translated into several languages, including Braille, and Stratton-Porter was estimated to have 50 million readers around the world.[1] She used her position and income as a well-known author to support conservation of Limberlost Swamp and other wetlands in the state of Indiana. Her novel A Girl of the Limberlost was adapted four times as a film, most recently in 1990 in a made-for-TV version.

Glorious
By EA Solinas
Think of it as a Midwestern Cinderella story, but with no glass slipper and plenty of moths. Gene Stratton Porter was at the peak of her skills when she wrote "A Girl of the Limberlost," which starts off as a young girl's struggle against her mother's virulent hatred -- and soon evolves into an enchanting little romance.

Elnora Comstock has barely signed up for college when she discovers that she can't afford it -- tuition and textbooks cost too much, and her shabby clothes are mocked by her classmates. Even worse, her half-crazy, malicious mother refuses to cough up any money.

But she soon finds that she can pay another way -- a strange lady called the Bird Woman is willing to pay money for moths, butterflies, caterpillars and chrysalids, which Elnora can easily find in a vast dangerous swamp called the Limberlost. And her friends Margaret and Wesley are happy to help her in any way they can -- clothes, a violin -- until the day when Mrs. Comstock comes to a shocking realization about her daughter.

Then Elnora encounters a wealthy young man named Philip Ammon, who has the same love of nature that she has -- as well as a wealthy socialite fiancee named Edith. But when a party in honor of Edith and Philip's engagement is wrecked by a butterfly and a fit of jealousy, he begins to realize what his true feelings for Elnora are...

"A Girl of the Limberlost" can be divided into two sections -- the first is a Cinderellaesque story about a strong, intelligent young girl who is pursing her music and education, despite her nasty old mother's loathing of her. But once that storyline is wrapped up, the second half of the book becomes a haunting, passionate love story.

Stratton-Porter was at her peak when she wrote this -- her prose is overflowing with natural beauty ("the whole earth was purple with a thick blanket of violets") and some very tough personal situations, such as when Margaret and Wesley take in a badly-abused young boy. And both halves of "A Girl of the Limberlost" reach a emotionally harrowing climax as two of the characters are forced to see the raw ugliness of their actions.

But the romance is also really adorable, especially since it's based on friendship and both parties only realize it belatedly. And Stratton-Porter adds in a touch of romance for other characters, including old married couples and snotty socialites.

Elnora is a likable, realistic girl that you'd like as a friend -- kind, charitable and hardworking, but has flashes of temper. And Philip Ammon is a rather sweet if clueless guy. Mrs. Comstock starts out as a crazy old lady who wallows in her grief and obsession with her dead husband, but Stratton-Porter rebuilds her into a character you can like and respect; Edith also starts off as a nasty snotty rich girl who cares more about social status than love, but the author puts her through the grinder and makes her more likable.

"A Girl of the Limberlost" is both a brilliant coming-of-age tale and a lush little romance, set against an epic backdrop of natural beauty. Definitely a must-read.

A charming old fashioned book.
By JF
A lovely early 20th century book about a girl who lives in a rural area, catching rare moths to put herself through high school. This book is perfect for a girl in her young teens- an innocently romantic tale that focuses a on girl's growing understanding of her own role in the world. While the book's language and setting might seem outdated to some, the theme and plot are timeless classics.

This is a book that I have loved reading and re-reading for the past 20 years, since I was about 13 years old.

Moths
By A Customer
I've read this book every few years or so since I was 10(I'm now 60) the first copy being my grandmother's. One is transported into a different world, one where goals were clearer . Elnora's struggles can be related to by any girl today, and her triumph is purely her own. A lovely theme in the book allows each character to come to life as a caterpillar, spend a time in a cocoon, them emerge finally as a beautiful moth. Elnora's mother's transformation is particularly splendid. The ecological concerns of the novel convince the reader that our "modern" problems are mere variations on a theme. The reverence for hard work, creativity, and strict moral standards are refreshing.

"The Last Word is Raymond Chandler meets Arrested Development. Zany, witty, and full of dark surprises, Lisa Lutz's novel is pure fun—and Izzy Spellman, PI, tops the list of 'Fictional Characters I'd Like to Meet for a Bourbon.'"—Gillian Flynn, New York Times bestselling author of Gone Girl

The sixth installment of the critically acclaimed, New York Times bestselling, Edgar- and Macavity-nominated and Alex Award-winning series by Lisa Lutz, finds our intrepid heroine of the series, Isabel Spellman, PI, at a crossroads. Izzy is used to being followed, extorted, and questioned—all occupational hazards of working at her family’s firm, Spellman Investigations. Her little sister, Rae, once tailed Izzy for weeks on end to discover the identity of Izzy’s boyfriend. Her mother, Olivia, once blackmailed Izzy with photographic evidence of Prom Night 1994. It seemed that Spellman vigilance would dissipate after Izzy was fired for breaching client confidentiality, but then Izzy avenged her dismissal by staging a hostile takeover of the company. She should have known better than to think she could put such shenanigans behind her.

In The Last Word, Izzy’s troubles are just beginning. After her takeover of Spellman Investigations, her employees are the furthest thing from collegial...and Izzy finds herself struggling to pay the bills. But when she is accused of embezzling from a former client, the ridiculously wealthy Mr. Slayter, the stakes become immense. If Izzy gets indicted, she could lose her PI license and the Spellman family’s livelihood, not to mention her own freedom. Is this the end of Izzy Spellman, PI?

The Last Word is, hands down, the most powerful book in the bestselling, award-nominated Spellman series.

*Starred Review* Trouble always has a way of finding Isabel Spellman, the snarky, whip-smart sleuth at the heart of Lutz’s best-selling series. Although Izzy has plenty of clients to keep her busy, much of her time is devoted to dealing with the mischievous staff at Spellman Investigations, aka her own family. Her mother and father lack any semblance of professionalism, opting to hide out in their bedroom sipping coffee rather than attending firm meetings (or do much work, for that matter). And Izzy’s sassy younger sister, Rae, has proved herself a master (mistress?) of blackmail and bribes. This time around, however, Izzy’s woes stem not from next of kin but from an uberwealthy former client named Edward Slayter, who’s accused Izzy of embezzlement. Slayter, it turns out, has early-stage Alzheimer’s and is desperate to hide his diagnosis from colleagues and friends. Izzy is doing her best to keep Slayter’s secret—and save her own neck. Many of Lutz’s quirky characters make appearances here, from Izzy’s charming ex-boyfriend (and San Francisco cop) Henry Stone to her brother, David, who’s traded the buttoned-up world of high finance for the demanding—and disheveled—life of a stay-at-home dad. Edgar-nominated Lutz is in fine form, delivering another killer whodunit packed with plot twists and wit. --Allison Block

Review
"[Spellman Six] is Raymond Chandler meets Arrested Development. Zany, witty and full of dark surprises, Lisa Lutz's novel is pure fun-and Izzy Spellman, PI, tops the list of 'Fictional Characters I'd Like to Meet for a Bourbon.'" (Gillian Flynn,#1 New York Times bestselling author of Gone Girl )

“The sly trick of Lisa Lutz’s Spellman novels is that they’re so funny and so smart that you’re taken by surprise by all the insights they offer---about loneliness, about the tumult of love and most of all about the tender chaos of families. Like Raymond Chandler-meets-Salinger’s Glass family, with [Spellman Six], Lutz offers her richest, funniest and most bittersweet Spellman tale to date.” (Megan Abbott, author of THE END OF EVERYTHING and DARE ME )

“Lutz delivers another rollicking good time in her sixth novel.” (Publishers Weekly )

"Edgar-nominated Lutz is in fine form...Another killer whodunit packed with plot twists and wit." (Booklist )

"Lisa Lutz has a delightful knack for being able to combine humor and drama without letting one minimize the impact of the other…If you like your mysteries served up with a generous helping of humor, both subtle and silly, then you are sure to enjoy Lutz's award-winning series.” (Bookreporter.com )

“In the end, good and quirky beats bad and twisted. For a sixth time, Lisa Lutz has made the finding out how so much marvelous fun.” (Baton-Rouge Advocate )

“[Lutz] does an outstanding job introducing fresh and unforgettable characters while painting laugh-out-loud scenes…. fresh, lively and consistently humorous.” (Bookreporter.com )

“Lisa Lutz's Spellman books are always hilarious, but Trail of the Spellmans reminded me how serious funny books can be. As precocious as the Spellman kids have always been, they're only now really coming of age and the result is, yes, hilarious, but also tender and melancholy and full of hard-won wisdom. This one's going to stay with readers for a long time.” (Laura Lippman, award-winning author of over 15 books including the recent novel I'd Know You Anywhere and the Tess Monaghan series )

“Lutz is one smart-mouthed writer, but the genuine surprise of The Spellman Files is that it's almost as touching as it is funny.”
--New York Daily News

“[Isabel Spellman is] the love child of Dirty Harry and Harriet the Spy… It’s not the mystery of how these cases ultimately resolve that will pull readers through, but the whip-smart sass of the story’s heroine, ace detective of her own heart.”
--People

Mostly for die-hard fans
By zgramma
I loved the first four books, and (at the time) believed the fourth "document" to be a satisfying and fitting end to the series. Nonetheless, I was pleased to hear there was to be more Izzy, trusting the skill of the author not to fall into the Evanovich-like formula trap. After reading "The Trail of the Spellmans," I could wish she had fallen in that trap. I found the fifth book unsatisfying, unpleasant, inconsistent, and heavy-handed.

That SHOULD have cured me of wanting to read "The Last Word," but like those about to witness a train wreck, I just couldn't turn my eyes away. TLW appears to close the Isabel Spellman saga once and for all. It continues some of the themes and personal story lines from TotS, introduces new professional and personal challenges to Isabel (all of which seem to overwhelm her), and serves as a bridge to the next series, evidently featuring Rae. (I see another Evanovich-type trap looming. Sigh).

TLW doesn't have the fun, snarky, and light touch of the first four Spellman novels, but (to its credit) it doesn't seem to aspire to that either. Characters are consistent with TotS, most of the plot lines are neatly tied, and if you want to keep up with the author's next series, you will probably need to read Documents* (*finger quotes -- sorry, couldn't resist) 5 and 6. If, (like me), you're not particularly interested in Rae Spellman, you might want to stop at book #4.

Same book, different title!
By Shari
i know it's partly my fault for not paying attention, but why in the world did they re-release the same book under a different title!! I wasted $15 on a book that I already have and read awhile ago!! it took a couple chapters to realize this since she tends to talk about past "documents" a lot. This is not the way to sell books!

Latest release in the hilarious Spellman series
By misplaced cajun
Izzy is in a bit of a bind. After performing a hostile takeover of the family business, she's now the boss but that doesn't mean that anyone listens to her. In fact, both of her parents are doing everything they can to undermine her authority - somewhat understandable considering Izzy became a bit of a dictator there for a while. But now the bank records are kind of wonky and Izzy is being accused of embezzling from one of her clients. She knows it's a set up but the feds aren't going to just take her word for it.

Each and every new Spellman book (or book from Lisa Lutz for that matter) is a guaranteed hilarious read! THE LAST WORD was certainly no exception in that regard. If you've not had the pleasure, you're really missing out. Never fear, all previous five books are now out in paperback and if you're really anxious, you can kind of dive in with this sixth installment without issue (but you'll have to go back to the beginning to get all the references.)

I'm kind of in awe of how Lisa Lutz's brain works. I mean she includes footnotes for goodness sake! If you've read any of her books, you know her characters are pretty carefully drawn, too: she's got individual profiles of each one, even going so far as to outline their childhood antics as well (some of which play into individual stories).

Plus, she's done this: [...] Oh, yes, it's for real. Lisa Lutz is a bit of a genius in my opinion!

(Is it wrong for me to say that Izzy Spellman is kind of my hero? I mean, I know she's a thirty-something who isn't really all that grown up, but I'm a thirty-something who doesn't really FEEL all that grown up! And while I'd never do half the things Izzy does, it's mostly because I'd never have the nerve.)

Besides being fall on the floor and laugh out loud funny, with a set of the most fabulous characters in fiction (as if that weren't enough), THE LAST WORD is a darn good story. Lisa Lutz knows how to plot an interesting mystery. The addition of Rae's new conflict resolution services here is a bonus, too, adding an interesting new aspect to the stories (and possibly some fresh new fodder for additional Spellman books).

We'll just have to wait and see what Lutz has up her sleeve next. I'm hoping this is not the last we'll see of the Spellmans.

P. D'Ors

Biografía del Silencio
By Juan Catret

Containing 4,789 photographs, it illustrates some 163 different types of action: elderly man lifting log, woman sweeping, woman climbing ladder, men boxing and wrestling, child crawling, man lifting weight, man jumping, and 155 other types of action, some of which are illustrated by as many as 62 different photographs.
Taken at speeds ranging up to 1/6000th of a second, these photographs show bone and muscle positions against ruled backgrounds. Almost all subjects are undraped, and all actions are shown from three angles: front, rear, and three-quarter view.
These historic photographs, one of the great monuments of nineteenth-century photography, are reproduced original size, with all the clarity and detail of the originals. MUST HAVE!
By Jill E. Burwell
This book belongs in every artist's library. First issued at the end of the 19th century, it has become a timeless reference. The author took quick time photographs of humans in a wide variety of common movements. The result is almost like breaking a film into separate cells. You get a 'blow-by-blow' breakdown of activities from simple walking to pouring water into a basin to sports. Both men and women are showcased, nude, with height reference lines behind. These are 'real' people, not the toothpick female and muscle bound male that have become today's figures to emulate. I hear people say, "I can only draw if I have something to look at," so often it makes me sad. It's OKAY to need something to look at. Artists have used models for centuries untold. You are not a lesser artist because you need something to look at. And this is the perfect 'something.' Great for you because these models never fuss or fidget. They never change their position except in the next photo. I lent my copy to someone and it was never returned. Every time I looked at the place on my bookshelf where it used to sit, a little part of me cringed. I am overjoyed to find the book here on Amazon. Get your copy and take it from someone who learned the hard way --don't let it out of your sight!

Good Content, Plain and Simple
By E. Richards
Muybridge created an extremely comprehensive collection of photos of people engaged in normal activities. For example, he had men shouldering rifles, women walking up stairs, men playing baseball, a little kid crawling, people with disabilities walking, people carrying objects and so on. Not only were the collections in the form of sequences of shots showing the movement, but they were done from several angles at the same time, so you could see the activity (throwing a bucket of water) front, back and sideways.
Some folks I knew at Autodesk scanned these images into their computers to test early versions of their Animator products. Others have made animated gifs out of Muybridge photos for their web pages. Others just sit and look at them because it's so interesting to see the care in these shots (not to mention all those charming Victorian hairdos :-)). My only (and this is only) beef with it is the images are quite small.
It, and the companion book about animals are very useful and enjoyable, indeed, and there isn't a lot of chatter.

Muybridges Masterpiece Collection
By rareoopdvds
Eaweard Muybridges work after his success with Animals in Motion, logically would pursue humans doing tasks that would allow us to view humans in motion. With about 4700 photos in this collection, larger than the animals collection, you will see men, women and children doing just about everything short of coition. All models are nude, running, skipping, jumping, carrying pails of water. This collection by Dover, one of the finest publishers around, is a great reference for all artists, especially animators. As it can show them the muscles and movements and positions of weight, balance, footing, head movements and expressions to gain an edge on their drawings for more accuracy. The Walt Disney Animation Studios reading list highly reccomends this collection for every prospective animator.

Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl (Dover Thrift Editions), by Harriet Jacobs

The true story of an individual's struggle for self-identity, self-preservation, and freedom, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl remains among the few extant slave narratives written by a woman. This autobiographical account chronicles the remarkable odyssey of Harriet Jacobs (1813–1897) whose dauntless spirit and faith carried her from a life of servitude and degradation in North Carolina to liberty and reunion with her children in the North.
Written and published in 1861 after Jacobs' harrowing escape from a vile and predatory master, the memoir delivers a powerful and unflinching portrayal of the abuses and hypocrisy of the master-slave relationship. Jacobs writes frankly of the horrors she suffered as a slave, her eventual escape after several unsuccessful attempts, and her seven years in self-imposed exile, hiding in a coffin-like "garret" attached to her grandmother's porch.
A rare firsthand account of a courageous woman's determination and endurance, this inspirational story also represents a valuable historical record of the continuing battle for freedom and the preservation of family.

From Library Journal
Published in 1861, this was one of the first personal narratives by a slave and one of the few written by a woman. Jacobs (1813-97) was a slave in North Carolina and suffered terribly, along with her family, at the hands of a ruthless owner. She made several failed attempts to escape before successfully making her way North, though it took years of hiding and slow progress. Eventually, she was reunited with her children. Henry Louis Gates, Jr. One of the major autobiographies of the African American tradition.

Louise Meriwether Harriet Jacobs in her narrative reveals how she refused to be victimized within her own mind, but rather chose to act instead from a steadfast conviction of her own worth....Hers is an example worth emulating even in these modern times.

Review
[Of] female slave narratives, Harriet Jacobs's Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, Written by Herself is the crowning achievement. Manifesting a command of rhetorical and narrative strategies rivaled only by that of Frederick Douglass, Jacobs's autobiography is one of the major works of Afro-American literature...Jacobs's narrative is a bold and gripping fusion of two major literary forms: she borrowed from the popular sentimental novel on one hand, and the slave narrative genre on the other. Her tale gains its importance from the fact that she charts, in great and painful detail, the sexual exploitation that daily haunted her life--and the life of every other black female slave...Ms. Yellin's superbly researched edition ensures that Harriet Jacobs will never be lost again. (Henry Louis Gates, Jr. New York Times Book Review)

[The book] is a major work in the canon of writing by Afro-American women...Jacobs's book--reaching across the gulf separating black women from white, slave from free, poor from rich, "bad" women from "good"--represents an early attempt to establish an American sisterhood. (Wayne Lionel Aponte The Nation)

This may be the most important story ever written by a slave woman, capturing as it does the gross indignities as well as the subtler social arrangements of the time. An introduction is invaluable in clarifying many incidents and personalities...The author writes with passion and insight into the peculiar institution of slavery. Her writing, modern in several respects, prefigures many of the developments in the later literature of the South. (Kirkus Reviews)

A Woman's Life in Slavery
By Robin Friedman
Harriet Jacobs' (1813-1897) "Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl" is one of the few accounts of Southern slavery written by a woman. The book was published in 1861 through the efforts of Maria Child, an abolitionist who edited the book and wrote an introduction to it. The book had its origin in a series of letters Jacobs wrote between 1853 and 1861 to her friends in the abolitionist movement, notably a woman named Amy Post. Historically, there was some doubt about the authorship of the book and about the authenticity of the incidents it records. These doubts have largely been put to rest by the discovery of the letters.
The book indeed has elements of a disguise and of a novel. Jacobs never uses her real name but calls herself instead "Linda Brent." The other characters in the book are also given pseudonyms. Jacobs tells us in the Preface to the book (signed "Linda Brent") that she changed names in order to protect the privacy of indiduals but that the incidents recounted in the narrative are "no fiction".
Jacobs was born in slave rural North Carolina. As a young girl, she learned to read and write, which was highly rare among slaves. At about the age of 11 she was sent to live as a slave to a doctor who also owned a plantation, called "Dr. Flint" in the book.
Jacobs book describes well the cruelties of the "Peculiar Institution -- in terms of its beatings, floggings, and burnings, overwork, starvation, and dehumanization. It focuses as well upon the selling and wrenching apart of families that resulted from the commodification of people in the slave system. But Jacobs' book is unique in that it describes first-hand the sexual indignities to which women were subjected in slavery. (Other accounts, such as those of Frederick Douglass, were written by men.) The book is also unusual in that Jacobs does not portray herself entirely as a hero but describes the nature of the steps she took to avoid becoming the sexual slave of Flint. Thus, when Flint subjected her to repeated sexual advances from the time Jacobs reached the age of 16, she tried to avoid him by beginning an affair with a white, single attorney with whom she had two children. When Flint's advances persisted, Jacobs formed the determination to try to secure her freedom.
The bulk of the book describes how Jacobs hid precariously in a cramped attic for seven years waiting for the opporunity to secure her freedom. There are also accounts of her prior attempts to leave slavery, including a particularly harrowing account of several days in a place aptly named "Snaky Swamp."
Jacobs describes her relationship with her grandmother, a free black woman who was probably the major inspiration of her life. She also describes well her love and concern for her children, conceived through the liasion with the white attorney.
This book offers a rare perspective on American slavery as it affected women. It is also a testament, I think, to the value of literacy and knowledge as an instrument for winning and preserving free human life. Although this story is not pretty, it is a testament to human persistence in the face of adversity and to the precious character of human freedom.

Poignant
By MarvelousMarla
This autobiographical condemnation of the south's Peculiar Institution puts a face on the suffering of the enslaved. American history is full of accounts of slavery which tend to broad overviews of the institution, whereas this book is written by an escaped slave who does not flinch at sharing every detail of her miserable life. Unlike other narratives which distorted the slave's voice through the perspective of the interviewers/authors who were notorious for exaggerating the uneducated slaves' broken english, this book is largely Ms. Jacobs' own words. She was taught to read and write as a child by a kind mistress, so she was able to put her thoughts on paper with clarity that surprised many. Ms. Jacobs had an editor, but this book seems to be her unfiltered view of the world.
It is one thing to hear about how slaveholders took liberties with female slaves, it is quite another to read in stark detail about women being commanded to lay down in fields, young girls being seduced and impregnated and their offspring sold to rid the slaveholder of the evidence of his licentiousness. The author talks about jealous white women, enraged by their husbands' behavior, taking it out on the hapless slaves. The white women were seen as ladies, delicate creatures prone to fainting spells and hissy fits whereas the Black women were beasts of burden, objects of lust and contempt simultaneously. Some slave women resisted these lustful swine and were beaten badly because of it. It was quite a conundrum. To be sure, white women suffered under this disgusting system too, though not to the same degree as the female slaves who had no one to protect them and their virtue. Even the notion of a slave having virtue is mocked. The author rejected the slaveholder's advances and dared to hope that she would be allowed to marry a free black man who loved and respected her. Not only was she not allowed to marry him, she was forbidden to see him or speak to him again.
The author shows us the depth of a mother's love as she suffers mightily to see that her children are not also brought under the yoke of slavery. Though she was able to elude her odious master, she does take up with some other white man in hopes that he would be able to buy her freedom. Her "owner" refuses to sell her and tells her that she and her children are the property of his minor daughter. Her lover seems kind enough as he claims his children and offers to give them his name, and he did eventually buy them, though he failed to emancipate them to spare them from a life of forced servitude. Ms. Jacobs noted that slavery taught her not to trust the promises of white men. Having lived in town most of her life, Ms. Jacobs is sent to the plantation of her master's cruel son to broken in after she continues to refuses his sexual advances. She is resigned to this fate until she learns that her children -- who were never treated like slaves -- were to be brought to the plantation also. It is then that she takes flight.
After enduring 7-years of confinement in cramped quarters under the roof of her grandmother's house, the author escapes to the North which is not quite the haven she imagined. Still, it is better than the south, and she makes friends who buy her freedom leaving her both relieved and bitter that she is still seen as property to be bought and sold like livestock. In New York Ms. Jacobs is reunited with her children and a beloved brother who'd escaped a few years ago while accompanying his master -- her former lover -- to the free states.
There is no fairytale ending to this story because the author endures plenty of abuse and uncertainty even after she makes it to the North. She is hunted down by the relentless slaveowners who were aided by the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850 and "The bloodhounds of the North." This is a wrenching account of this shameful period of American history, and should be required reading for all.

Still a moving testimony
By Adirondack Views
I often believe it is easy to criticize nineteenth century Americans for not stepping up to the plate regarding the issue of slavery and race in America. Jefferson may well have agonized over the issue he called the "death knell of the nation" and which he labeled a "neccessary evil." Certainly he benefitted by the ownership of nearly 300 slaves, but he grew up in a world in which slavery was the norm. It takes a revoutionary and remarkable man to truly stand against the only world he knows and move to create a different world, so I usually defend Jefferson and his political vision which clearly transcended that world.
Reading Frederick Douglass, however, makes me wonder how anyone with firsthand knowledge of the institution could not see the obvious pain and cruelty which existed right in front of his or her eyes. Douglass's narrative, and particularly his descriptions of the slave trade in Baltimore and the obvious place of the whip (whether used or not) as the principal vehicle of social control argues most eloquently that though the slave system may have been a social norm, the blinders had to be unbelievably thick not to see the horrors that the institution wrought. The relationship of slave and master perpetuated a most un-American (at least in terms of our professed values--cf. Douglass's later antislavery orations) tyranny and oppression. Douglass's narrative testifies that our ancestors could have seen much more and done much more and that 600,000 lives and a subsequent 120 years of racial schism and pain was too much a price to bear for the peculiar institution.
