Look smart! - Required reading for math teachers.

This book is a fabulous value for the money. One of the magic square stunts can be mastered in about an hour and will make people think your a genious.

If you work with kids in any capacity, the tricks in this book are a wonderful way to bring math to life for them.

Very engaging Southern Gothic ghost story...

This is a very well written and engaging southern gothic ghost story! If you are a fan of ghost stories you might want to consider putting this one on your list. There were many times where I got goose bumps as I was reading about these intriguing, haunting spirits that are lurking about.

I did have some difficulty reading this story as an ebook. I was having trouble sorting out all of the different characters as they were being introduced and kept having to flip back and forth to keep myself in check on the characters. And, there is a map at the beginning of the book to help keep you straight on where everything was located... a general idea of the area. I don't like having to flip back and forth on my kindle so reading this in paperback or hardback would have made that easier. Once I got myself all sorted out the story flowed well and I was completely engaged.

The story revolves mostly around two girls named Shelly and Faith. Shelly is able to see the ghosts that haunt them and can engage with them. Faith is eventually possessed by one of the ghosts who is out on a mission to both protect the girls and get revenge against the town preacher who we begin to realize is more of a devil in disguise.

This is a book that is hard to summarize because there is a lot going on... but, it is definitely a page turner and one I would highly recommend.

Beautifully written but multiple POVs muddled the storyline

My Review: I'm a huge paranormal and historical fiction fan so when I saw that this book would incorporate the post-slavery era with a bit of paranormal I thought it would be perfect for me. Unfortunately I found it very hard to get into this book and even harder to rate it.

Let's start with the positives. There is no question that this book is beautifully written. The descriptions of life on Black Mountain, NC to the shores of the Georgian coast were vivid, beautifully described and added to the atmosphere of the book. It also has a very eerie, dark and mystical feel which only added to the compelling mystery.

The story is told from the point of view of several different characters and the story jumps from the 1930's back to the 1800's to tell the story. Unfortunately, these two factors made it difficult to keep up with the plot. I always felt a little confused for the first few paragraphs when a new character began telling her story until I figured out who was talking, what era we were in and what was going on. But, just when my interest started to wane the mystery would pull me back in. This back and forth continued for the entire book.

While many of the female characters tended to blend in with each other (in my mind, at least) the one character who really stood out for me was the very creepy Pastor Dobbins. This guy was a great 'bad guy' and really brought a sinister edge to the book. I also loved how Ms Hite described the spirits, or 'haints', in the book. They weren't just clichéd 'scary ghouls in the cemetery' kind of ghosts but had their own character development and story to tell.

So, in the end, I enjoyed the mystery and the atmosphere of the book. Unfortunately the build-up of the plot took longer than I was expecting and the use of multiple points of view and eras got in the way with me giving the book a higher rating.

Rich story - but it takes some effort to read

I had a hard time with the alternating first person writing style. The book has a family tree including many of the speaking characters, but not every person speaking is in that tree. It's a bit hard to follow, but it's worth pushing on through. This story is set in the mountains of North Carolina and alternates with the salt-water marshes of Georgia. There is an undercurrent of unease, and the very first line of the story pulls the reader in like an undertow. A white man from New York City is bringing his black girlfriend to visit Georgia during the Great Depression. How could you not hold your breath for the coming storm?

As you read on, you encounter women with very different opinions and actions, both white and black. It's filled with tension, and it isn't long before there's a murder with blame placed on the racial scapegoat. These women react differently to such events, and while they are polarized by the racial norm, they also find common ground. The story twists and turns as everyone tries to maintain their footing, even the shades, ghosts, and memories fade in and out of the telling.

Shelly, a 16-year-old black girl, must help other ghosts tell their story. They are bound to the people, places, and events until the telling brings them peace. Once satisfied, they can move on to their well-deserved rest. Shelly must find strength to stand up to the white preacher, Pastor Dobbins, and discover his horrible past that sent him to Black Mountain. I found myself cheering her on, and was surprised by the person who provided the support she needed.

I loved the colorful descriptions, the amazing history, and the final justification this story wove. Even now, days after reading, I find myself drawn back to the story. While it takes a little effort to read, this story completely makes sense, and the telling with multiple first person insight is brilliant. Don't pass this story over. Even if you are less impressed than I was, you'll be amazed at the rich history of the time and the veiled struggles of the day.

Moderate sexual tension and situations, PG13. Sexual discussion is appropriate for the time for behind-the-scenes descriptions among women. Does not rise to the level of erotica.

this old book the best elementary introduction to statistical mechanics

This is a wonderful introduction to statistical mechanics, especially for chemistry students taking undergraduate physical chemistry. Leonard K. Nash was a Harvard professor of chemistry whose primary interest became chemical education and the history of chemistry. This book was a classic in the 1960's, but later went out of print. Dover has done a real service in reissuing it. The book is remarkable for its lucidity and pedagogical clarity. It's the best introduction I know to the very difficult subject, especially for beginners, of statistical mechanics. For starters, it gives a wonderfully insightful look at the meaning of the statistics of the statistical ensembles.

This book puts most of the current physical chemistry textbooks to shame in its treatment of the subject. It could serve as a stand-alone text for the statistical mechanics part of a physical chemistry sequence.

If you are taking this course, you owe it to yourself to get this book. The price cannot be beat.

I also recommend the companion book by Nash on macroscopic thermodynamics, together with Fermi's classic text (also available from Dover).

At a more elementary level, Dover has re-issued Bruce Mahan's famous thermodynamics book. I believe he used this for advanced freshmen at Berkeley. If you are having trouble with thermodynamics in physical chemistry, even at the Fermi or Nash level, do yourself a favor and get Mahan's book. Even if you're not having trouble, you may very well find it helpful.

An Excellent Introduction for Chemistry or Physics Students

I wholeheartedly recommend this book as either a first or a second book on Statistical Mechanics for undergraduates in either physics or chemistry. But I would recommend that any student attempting this book have some background in probability.

The approach to the subject is very much in the style of Boltzmann, so there is heavy use of the idea of the microcanonical ensemble, basic combinatorics, and Stirling's approximation.

While this approach is good as an introduction, it is ultimately less powerful and general than the Gibbsian approach.

So now for the contents...

Chapter 1: The Statistical Viewpoint. This chapter introduces the fundamental ideas of statistical mechanics and deduces the law of canonical distribution for the independent elements (molecules) of a system. It also gives Boltzmann's definition of entropy.

Chapter 2: The Partition Function. The partition function begins its life in statistical mechanics as a humble normalization factor and is quickly elevated to the central object of study.

This chapter demonstrates the importance of the partition function very quickly by showing how it is related to the equilibrium constant of a simple chemical reaction. It then details how partition functions should be formulated tackling the tricky topic of indistinguishable units required by quantum mechanics. Finally, it shows how all of the classical thermodynamical functions can be deduced once the partition function is known.

Chapter 3: Evaluation of Partition Functions. Once we understand how to formulate partition functions, actually evaluating them becomes the central mathematical problem of the entire subject of the statistical mechanics. This chapter derives the partition functions for monatomic and diatomic ideal gasses. It notes the important difference between homonuclear and heteronuclear diatomic gasses, and is broken down into separate sections for the translational, rotational and vibrational contributions to the partition function. This chapter ends with a few words about partition functions for polyatomic gasses.

Chapter 4: Applications. This chapter is devoted to the application of the theory developed thus far to the exploration of two very important areas: heat capacities and equilibrium.

The first section covers the heat capacities of solids giving both the Einstein and Debye accounts as well as the heat capacities of monatomic and diatomic gasses.

The second section begins with a general discussion of equilibrium constants and then launches into a five page discussion of equilibrium for the simple reaction of the dissociation of Iodine gas. This example uses statistical mechanics to predict the equilibrium constant as a function of the temperature. This section concludes with a brief discussion of the the most important contributions to equilibrium constants.

The book ends with 31 problems which test the readers understanding of the material and also ask the reader to provide the details or alternatives to some of the derivations in this book. None of them are particularly difficult. All of them seem well chosen and useful.

There is a lot to like about this book, and not much to not like. The exposition is very clear and there are many helpful figures throughout the book.

Partition function doesn't make sense?

Without this book I would have been lost in my Stat. Mech. course (physics). I have very little experience with chemistry. This book, to my understanding, is a book intended for students of physical chemistry. As a physics student, I found this resource invaluable! It demands from the reader a tiny bit of mathematical skill - not really and theorem-proof kind of stuff, more like being able to manipulate sums and products and being alert enough to follow what's happening.

Nash is VERY clear! Stat. Mech., in my opinion, is made much easier when going through this book along side the regular course text-book. For my class, the instructor chose to use Chandler's "Introduction to Modern Statistical Mechanics" - the purpose of this book is different, wherever they overlap in content I find Nash to be easier to follow, the arguments to be simpler. Often in physics texts it is said that "one may use statistical arguments to show that..." and Nash does them and shows that they are actually 'simple' (by simple I mean few assumptions, low-level math, just counting arguments, sums and products, derivatives, things like that).

The first chapter is a (much needed) introduction to probability, very minimal, nothing too intense, just counting arguments (no Central Limit Theorems or Laws of Large Numbers). Often physics/chem students don't get enough exposure to math, this helps. After that we have a bit of an intro to the Boltzmann distribution, and then an introduction of the partition function as a normalization constant. From there he shows how almost everything in stat. mech. and thermodynamics can be derived from this simple normalization constant! The things he derives with that function! I particularly liked the geometric interpretation he gives to it.

If you give this book an honest effort (not really that much), you will walk away understanding the central arguments of stat. mech. As another reviewer noted, if you combine this book with Fermi's book on "Thermodynamics" you'll walk away being a master of the subject (at least at the undergraduate level) - they complement each other well.

More physics books should be written this way.

Lively characters and spirited scenes offer plenty of light entertainment, though the ending feels tacked on. It's not quite another Austen-revisited novel, but it's close.

A very enjoyable Regency romance

Maybe not quite as witty and well written as Jane Austen, not as funny, delightful and historically detailed as Georgette Heyer, but a very nice accurate, clean romance around Regency times.
Nice reference to some poets and their work for fan of poesy.
Even the story becomes poetic in a few scenes.
An enjoyable read, anyway, much better written than many other contemporary authors of Regency style, without the unnecessary sexual scenes.

A nice read

Not quite on a par with Georgette Heyer (my favorite author of historical romances) but the story was well written and held my interest, especially as the book progressed. A nice story which also gives a glimpse of the prevailing attitudes about women in the early nineteenth century. No sex scenes for those readers who prefer the Heyer style. I shall certainly look for more books by this author.

Pretty basic

An easy read of market fundamentals. I liked the very basic introduction to technical analysis but need to read something more detailed. The thesis - study, study, study - is hardly new. The overall market perspective is useful and full of insights for a beginning trader like me. I've watched the market for years but have been limited in what I could do. Released from those restrictions, this book was useful in putting authoritative information in one place.

What a great title, and pretty book cover! This quickly became kindling for the wood stove, absolutely the worst book about any sort of investing topic I have ever wasted my time with. And such a pity, the concept in the title is good, but the writer had close to zero knowledge of the markets.

For the sake of disclosure, I worked with Mel French when for 8 years she, as the United States chief of protocol, oversaw Blair House, the President's Guest House, which I managed from mid 1988 - mid 2001. Her book is a superb reference source for anyone dealing with officialdom here and abroad whether it is governments, international organizations or businesses. In a well organized, easy to read and understand arrangement it tells the reader exactly what universally accepted standards of behavior are and how to arrange the framework within which we in a civil society live and work with each other. While protocol is form as opposed to substance, it is also mechanical diplomacy, which all of us should be familiar with in our daily lives. I warmly recommend this book as a interesting read, and a necessary addition to one's reference library.

delightful historical fiction for the entire family

I had trouble finding a book to use as a biography for our study of Gutenberg. I read a review of this book in a catalog and had to order it. Action, adventure, mystery are all interwoven with the biography of Gutenberg. My children begged me to read another chapter each night. You also get a feel for the time period. I am a fan of Louise Vernon and this book is among the best. We enjoyed it completely. Recommended

The Boy who wanted to copy the Bible

"Hans recalled with painful intensity his vow to make the man who had borrowed Father's money return it all. Here it was - but now he did not want the money, and he knew Mother would not want it either. The printing of the Bible must come first."

When twelve-year-old Hans Dunne's father dies suddenly, it looks like he will be forced to drop out of the monastery Latin school. As it turns out, his father was in debt, so now his mother cannot pay the tuition for school. Hans feels he should learn a trade in order to help his family. But his secret ambition is to one day make copies of the Bible, and if he doesn't become a monk, how will he ever be able to achieve his goal?

One day Hans and his mother discover that his father went into debt because he had loaned a large sum of money to support a project he believed was very important. Hans's mother tells him, "I remember now that your father kept talking about some man who was doing important work for the glory of God...He kept saying this man was being blessed and inspired by God to perfect his art." When he heard this, Hans thought to himself, "God is inspiring me, too. Copying the Bible is important work - maybe the most important work in the world."

When the opportunity arises for Hans to become an apprentice to Johann Gutenberg, a thought suddenly occurs to him: "God had not withheld the means by which he could copy the Bible but instead had provided an entirely new way. Even Father's death, so painfully hard to understand, had its place in God's greater plan." As Hans becomes more involved with Gutenberg and his work, he sees how much the man is willing to sacrifice to turn years of effort into a reality.

Those who became patrons of Gutenberg also made personal sacrifices to help fund his project. Did you know it actually took over five years to print the first 100 copies of the Bible? Readers may also be surprised to learn from this story that Gutenberg faced great opposition from people, including some of the monks, who thought his new technique for printing multiple copies of the Bible was "of the devil."

Readers of Ink on His Fingers will find the main character, Hans, a very likable boy. He's bright, dutiful, sensitive, and ambitious. And his goal of copying the scriptures is a noble one. With Gutenberg's invention of the printing press in 1450, the Bible would be able to be printed more quickly and efficiently, each copy exactly the same. It would be able to be more widely distributed and eventually more affordable for people to acquire their own copies. The press also freed up the monks from the tedious task of hand-copying the scriptures, so they could instead teach people to read the Word of God.

What I like most about this story is the emphasis that is placed on the value of God's Word. Today, we take our copies of the Bible for granted. In many homes, multiple copies in various versions can be found. The Bible is readily available in stores and online, in many choices of format and color, to buy or download, and for a reasonable price. Most people don't ever stop to think about how the Bible has come into our hands.

A Supplemental Assignment for Kids:
Here's an idea for you to do with your children (if you're a homeschooling family you may have done this before). Select a passage of scripture, a Psalm for example, and have your children copy it onto a blank sheet of paper in their neatest handwriting. Depending on their age, you could really drive home the point by having them do it in pen, and requiring them to start all over if (or should I say WHEN) they make a mistake. After they have completed the task (or at least attempted it), ask them how long they think it would take to hand copy the entire Bible!

Ink on His Fingers is just the kind of history book I like. It is fiction, but has real facts too. It also shows how much Johann Gutenberg worked for his press, was in debt, believed in his cause, and was faithful.
But it also leaves you hanging after Johann received more help and money from someone.
