She wasn't in the lab. That's all she knew. The smells were different. Fewer sterilizing cleansers and less recycled air. More body odor. Piss and sweat. Dirt. Wet rocks.

Audrey opened her eyes and blinked. She pushed up onto her hands and knees. Pain banged at her temples--the ache of still-healing blows to the skull and her own frantic pulse. Lifting her head was an effort like swimming through wet cement.

Her fuzzy vision sharpened as she got used to the dim lighting. Just a pair of bare incandescent bulbs. A humid mist hung heavy in the cave-like room. Even when her eyes worked together, focusing, that mist ebbed away at details. She couldn't tell where the algae-covered walls began and ended.

The bars to her four-by-four cage were a prison. Solid iron. She lifted swollen hands and grasped the cold metal. Frustration ate at her insides. Rattling the cage bars, she shrieked.

"Where is my son?"

At least in the lab, she and Jack had shared a cell. No bars. Only walls painted black. Just as disorienting. But that confinement had almost felt safe. She'd held her boy, thankful the darkness concealed the worst of their wounds.

Now she had iron bars, algae, and a black pit where her heart had been.

"Where is he? Aster! You son of a bitch!"

Footsteps.

The hair lifted on the backs of her forearms. As her heartbeat jacked, she noticed her dirty body. Her vulnerability. She wore a paper hospital gown--no underwear, no shoes. Had she been dragged straight from the lab? The last thing she remembered was being strapped to an operating table, after having slipped the note to Reed. A mask had pumped anesthetic into her mouth and nose but she'd been hopeful for the first time in months.

Maybe that explained her grogginess. From surgery to a Dragon-damned cave.

Now she wore a damping collar. But why? Her powers had never manifested. Giving birth to the first natural-born Dragon King in a generation was the only remarkable thing she'd ever done.

She forced the distracting details away. Look for a way out. A way to survive. The iron bars were a lost cause, but the floor was pitted concrete.

With a crack in the corner.

Audrey picked where moisture had worn away a small crevice. Her fingertips bled. Aching knuckles stretched shadow puppets along the wall. She wiped sweat from her forehead. Her toes gripped for balance as she scraped harder, faster.

The steps echoed more loudly. Heavy. Determined. Certainly male. His footfalls hit too heavily for a lean man. A bruiser. One of the Aster cartel's bodyguards. She didn't stand a chance, but she kept clawing. Her breath became hot steam in her lungs.

A piece of concrete about the size of her fist gave way. One pointed end had promise. If she could strike just the right spot on the man's temple...

She edged away from the bars until her spine pinched against the rock wall. After twisting her long hair, she shoved it down the back of the hospital gown. She balanced on the balls of her feet, ready to spring.

As a member of the Honorable Giva's immediate family, she'd been instructed in martial training from an early age. She'd never wielded the powers of her kind, and she was seriously out of practice, but she was not helpless. The chunk of concrete rested in her palm. It was the difference between dying--and dying while fighting.

A flashlight's beam penetrated the recess of the cave. Audrey narrowed her eyes. She watched through her lashes. The man had so many advantages. That realization should've cowed her. Should've turned her backbone to mud and left her weeping. But after having been a victim for more than a year--drugged, bound, helpless--she felt mighty. No manacles. No hallucinogens. Just a rock in her hand and a blaze of pure rage.

The man stepped into clear view.

Easily more than six foot, he was built for breaking bones and ripping off limbs. Brawn. Solid muscle. Powerful biceps and shadow-black hair. Plate metal covered his heart and vital organs, leaving his arms free. Calf-high boots were made of toughened leather. Bare, muscular thighs flexed with the slightest movement. But he didn't seem the kind of man to make slight movements. Everything about him was overwhelming.

His jaw was fixed in an expression she'd learned to recognize: You will find no mercy here.

Audrey gave her flight instinct a hard shove. She pushed far into the shadows. Futile, really, when he aimed the beam directly at her face. She squinted and kept her right hand out of sight as the cage unlocked.

"Disgusting," he muttered.

"And you're a traitor," she spat in the language of the Dragon Kings. A language she hadn't used for nearly a decade.

Since meeting Caleb, she hadn't given much thought to the old ways. Her happiness as a human wife had been too easy. Too good to last. But long ago, the ways of the Dragon Kings had been her entire life--the ritual and the covert power.

No matter her ostracism from her clan.

Years of rage came rushing back. The coiled ferocity in her legs exploded. She leapt. The cage door swung open on hinges that squealed a rusted protest.

Not even the momentum of her leap shifted the man from his kneeling stance. He only grunted. Audrey's quick instincts brought that chunk of concrete up, up, in a violent arc. Her aim was true. The jagged edge struck the side of his face. Another grunt.

Then Audrey was thrown across the room.

Her shoulder hit the ground, followed by her head. A cry ripped from her throat. She slid three feet. Agony stabbed down to her marrow, as if pain had always been a part of her body.

He'd simply...hurled her.

The big man needed only two strides to cross to where Audrey sprawled. He stripped the chuck of concrete from her hand and tossed it down the tunnel.

"Can you hear me, lab filth?"

The old language rattled in her brain. Words passed down from the blessed Dragon. Nothing quite worked. Her lungs wouldn't take in air. Something ground painfully in her hip socket. She nodded out of pure reflex.

"If you ever attempt to strike me again, I will snap your spine in two. Think you could recover from that? Our kind can endure a great deal--much more than humans. But we're not immortal."

"Where is my son?" Only a rasp now.

"He's better off dead. Now get up."

He yanked her under both arms and thrust her against a wall. Shots of fire spiked her joints. She gasped as panic set in. She wanted to fight. Wanted to. Yet just as when Dr. Aster had drugged her, or when her brain short-circuited because of his torture, she could not.

That didn't stop her from snarling and spitting.

Because he spoke the language of the Dragon Kings, he belonged to one of the sacred Five Clans. But to actually work for that madman? He was the filth. Bile surged into her mouth.

"You've still got some spirit." His muscles were tense, holding her immobile, while his breathing remained calm. "I can see why Old Man Aster has plans for you. We're going to have quite the time."

The flashlight had rolled across the ground until it illuminated her captor's face. Blood streamed down from where she'd gouged a ragged hole in his cheek. He was smooth-shaven, and his black hair was shorn close to his head. Eyes the color of teak were fathomless, unreadable. Dark lashes cast shadows along his sharp cheekbones. A scar on his upper lip told stories of past battles. A damping collar encircled his thick, muscular throat.

A tattoo of a serpent wrapped around the back of his head. The tongue hissed toward one temple and the tail flicked toward the other. The Aster family icon.

Realization settled ice in her belly. He was far deadlier than a brute from the laboratory.

Part boogeyman, part myth--he was a Cage warrior.

"The Aster cartel owns you now, lab filth. But they're done with experiments." His scarred lip curled into a snarling smile. "You're here to fight in the Cages."

It was ok

Audrey MacLaren was an art teacher and married to a marketing exec. She was the mother to Jack. She also had a secret. She was really Nynn of the Clan Tigony, a dragon in exile. She was a type of hybrid without the dragon powers that her clan was known for. The Aster crime family has killed her husband and kidnapped Audrey and her son Jack. Jack is a true born dragon king and old man Aster has captured Jack and Audrey to conduct tests on them. He wants to find out how she was able to give birth to one when she was a hybrid and her husband was human. She and Jack have endured painful and humiliating tests and torture.
Then Audrey wakes to find herself is a cell and separated from her son. She has been given to Leto. Leto is to train her to fight in the cages. Leto is also from a dragon tribe, working for the Asters to keep his family safe. He trains warriors to fight in the cages in order to earn protection for his sisters.
Audrey has decided that she will learn what Leto has to teach her and save her son, then burn the place down. She would live for vengeance. Leto will use that drive to make her into a powerful warrior. As her powers develop, she is to become Leto's partner in the cage battles. They battle each other every step of the way but grow to trust each other. Leto's desire to have her wars with his duty to train her. Helping her against the Asters could destroy everything he has accomplished, but he knows what is being done is wrong. The decision he makes will change everything.
I had a really hard time getting into this book. It was not one of my favorite storylines. The main character, Audrey, was strong and willing to fight. I really liked the fire she had, but not wanting to do everything to access her powers was not something I expected. She was willing to do other dangerous things to free her son, but refused to do that. I was confused to why, as a mother she didn't do everything possible. When she decided to, I found out why. I almost stopped reading after that. I hated the turn of events and was disgusted with the way the story went from there.
The relationship between Leto and Audrey grew and changed as the story evolved. That was my favorite part and had me continue in spite how the story progressed. They had to learn to trust each other in order to succeed. Then midway through the story I lost complete respect for Leto. He seemed to go along with the Asters concerning Audrey. I quit reading the story for awhile. In fact I wasn't sure if I wanted to read the rest. However, I kept going and the ending didn't disappoint. It was definitely nail biting. With the full journey and the story, I would probably only give it a 3 out of 5 rating. In other words it was ok in my opinion.

Quick & Dirty: This novel confused me in general. It was intense but disappointing, and not my cup of tea.

Opening Sentence: Leto’s eyes glimmered, as black and shining as the accents on his armor.

The Review:

Nynn is a Dragon King, one of few that make up a dying race with amazing powers. After being ostracized from the Dragon King Council and leaders, Nynn went into the human world and became Audrey, living a normal human life. Audrey had a husband, Caleb, and a son, Jack — the first naturally born Dragon King in a long time. This miracle turns bittersweet when a sadistic scientist kills Caleb, kidnaps her and Jack, and performs tests.

Soon Audrey is not needed to be tested on anymore, and she is sent to the cartels to fight other captured Dragon Kings. She begins to fall in love with Leto, her trainer of sorts, and discovers memories that were hidden and powers that were abstained.

Before I even flipped open this book, I checked out Amazon reviews, and after seeing four stars was pleasantly surprised. Unfortunately, this book did not fulfill my expectations.

There were a few main points that got on my nerves. One, it took forever and increasingly tested my patience as Nynn trains for her first fight in three weeks. Two, it was so confusing. I didn’t understand that Dragon Kings were a “demon” race until I looked on Amazon, and I didn’t get the whole cartel idea until halfway through. Three, some scenes were becoming more of a Fifty Shades of Grey situation and I just felt I needed to skip those. The colorful language didn’t bother me, but the chapters I just described were uncomfortable and took up a surprising section of the book.

Nynn is a strong female chatacter, I’ll give you that. The author’s best job was at character building, and Audrey’s fading into Nynn was subtle, but there all the same —- it made a powerful statement. Leto started to crave freedom more and more as the book went on. Little changes became bigger while the novel progressed, and that was good. Additionally, the writing style flowed well, but it didn’t make up for the lack of excitement that made me lose interest.

A final thing, the only thing I really loved, was how determined Nynn was to rescue her son. That emotion was raw and beautiful. It was one thing that continued to stay constant and from the start and was my favorite thing about this book.

This also bored me because it wasn’t engaging enough, and my brain kept wandering. As I daydreamed, I would miss something and have to backtrack a page or so to see what I missed. I also didn’t understand a lot. I think the author was going for one of those “figure it out as you go along,” but it didn’t work for me, and I kept referring to Goodreads or good old Google to answer my questions. The story was dark in general, not particularly compelling, and with a few plot holes. I didn’t enjoy this, and I had to force myself to read it. I wasn’t very interested after I started getting bored, so even when the excitement rises the book was already ruined for me.

Still, other readers may enjoy the romance or the plot more than I did. Obviously some, seeing as forty people on Amazon rated from three to five stars (mostly 4). Maybe they’re older, or maybe they’re more patient, but I personally missed the point.

Notable Scene:

Even in her mind, she cried. The grief was more raw there. No inhabitations. No physical limit to how loud she could scream or how deeply sobs could wrack her body. No one to hear her, look at her, punish her for what could not be contained. Dr. Asher had used a scalpel. And he handed Hellix a whip.

An intense story

This book was a difficult read for me and took awhile for me to finish reading it. I do understand that it really isn't my type of book as I don't care for stories with a lot of intensity or violence. I can get through scenes that are violent as long as the rest of the story is really good, positive, or extremely interesting paranormally. This story was not what I expected, as I thought it was part romance, but it is NOT a sweet romance! I kept expecting more gentleness, but didn't find it. I think that if you are into intense books with lots of action than you would enjoy this story. I had a difficult time connecting with the two main characters and the horrible environment that this story takes place in. I strongly recommend reading the book flap (below the book description) before buying the book. If you enjoy that, and don't expect the story to get any gentler, than you will really enjoy this book. Also, the story does not end with this book.

Video analysis based on the semantic content is in fact still an open issue for the computer vision research community, especially when real-time analysis of complex scenes is concerned.
 
This book explores an innovative, original approach to human behaviour analysis and understanding by using the syntactical symbolic analysis of images and video streaming described by means of strings of symbols. A symbol is associated to each area of the analyzed scene. When a moving object enters an area, the corresponding symbol is appended to the string describing the motion. This approach allows for characterizing the motion of a moving object with a word composed by symbols. By studying and classifying these words we can categorize and understand the various behaviours. The main advantage of this approach lies in the simplicity of the scene and motion descriptions so that the behaviour analysis will have limited computational complexity due to the intrinsic nature both of the representations and the related operations used to manipulate them. Besides, the structure of the representations is well suited for possible parallel processing, thus allowing for speeding up the analysis when appropriate hardware architectures are used. A new methodology for design systems for hierarchical high semantic level analysis of video streaming in narrow domains is also proposed.  Guidelines to design your own system are provided in this book.

This is one of the best Pagan/Neo-Pagan books I've read in a long time. Actually, it's one of the best non-fiction I've read in a long time, period.

It's intelligent, rational, easy to read while being in-depth, and has a wonderful conversational quality to it that makes it feel like you're listening to the author talk instead of reading from the page.

In terms of content, this is one of the first books containing "how to" info that didn't a) bore me, and b) intimidate me away from trying it. At the end of the book, instead of feeling that trying to find my totem is just too much time and work, I've been motivated into feeling like it's something that is doable and within my reach.

I'd recommend this book to anyone. :)

A Key that Opens Many Doors

I bought this book on a whim because the cover intrigued me and I'd heard good things about the author. It was one of the best book purchases I made all year. New Paths put names and context to totemic concepts I've been working with for over 15 years, such as Skin Spirits, or the spirits inherent in animal hides and bones. It has guided meditations that have worked better for me than the ones on other totem/Pagan books I've read. They very simple and intuitive. I got great results from them.

The section on cultural appropriation was also a welcome sight; making Neopagans feel confident in our own cultural heritage instead of seeing it as inferior to (highly romanticized) indigenous ones. We do have our own culture, and that's OK, we can work it in new directions instead of borrowing all the time from traditions we don't understand, and people who may not like their traditions being pillaged. That was a breath of fresh air.

There are many suggestions on how to tailor totemic traditions for yourself. I am partial to the bioregional method, which is getting to know the environment you live in, and the spirits within it. I follow a Kemetic (Ancient Egyptian) path but I live in the Midwestern U.S. and a spirituality based on the climate, flora and fauna I experience on a daily basis was something I felt was missing from my life. this fills that void nicely and it feels natural to me.

Other suggestions include looking for family totems in your own family if you are not indigenous - say your name is Taube or Wolf, those are animal names, and can be worked with totemically.

I liked this book so much I got Lupa's DIY Totemism and plan to get more. it's a must read for anyone interested in Totem animals.

Animal totems are something I was interested in but never really explored. I always sort of felt that you needed to be a big nature lover to work with animal totems and if you know me, you know that me and nature do not get along. I'm allergic to just about everything that grows and every animal. All fur, feathers, dander, down, all of it. However, Lupa's new book "New Paths to Animal Totems: Three Alternative Approaches to Creating Your Totemism" really opened my eyes.

Lupa explains how you don't have to be tied to the Native American model that so many books and websites tend to favor. She offers three alternative models to discerning your totems: correspondences, bioregional, and archetypal. In correspondences Lupa discusses discovering your totem/totems using the directions, the Chinese or Western Zodiac, the Tarot and more. Bioregionalism is finding your totems not from within arbitrary boundaries such as state lines but instead from a place defined by natural phenomena such as waterways and geographic formations. Last is archetypal which is more psychological than other options. It matches our internal impulses and instincts to what we know of nonhuman animals, creating a personalized map of both the internal self and the world we inhabit. Lupa offers exercises, meditations, and examples for all of these so the seeker has a companion working with them along their path. She also discusses the option of combining these totemic paths.

Additionally, Lupa discusses ways to interact with, honor, and assist your totem animal. There's a guided meditation for helping find your totem animal. My favorite extra is a list of animal nonprofits.

"New Paths to Animal Totems" is a great book for anyone looking for a new perspective, or for someone new like me. I thought that someone housebound like myself couldn't have a relationship with a totem animal, but Lupa's writing opened my eyes. Ideally yes, being out in nature is great. However many people have totem animals that aren't found in nature where they live, so being outside doesn't effect the relationship one way or the other. That's a pretty big leap from one book. Just think what "New Paths to Animals" might teach you.

As for the USAO—the undercurrents, the clashing personalities, the rivalries, all are painted with understanding and honesty by a talented writer who was herself in the middle of the fray for a number of years. She expertly lays out how and why the legal system works in the USAO in Washington, D.C. You see all the tangles, the losses, the triumphs of a group of people who just don't stop.

What I liked particularly were Leotta’s evocative descriptions of the courtrooms, the endless procedures, the waiting—the interminable waiting—and the calm, almost deadening efficiency of the judges.

When I finished Speak of the Devil I knew I'd learned and enjoyed and was pleased to have read such an excellent book.

Great crime novel

I write here as one who has never read a book by Allison Leotta, but "Speak of the Devil" has made me want to read everything she has written. The main character in "Speak of the Devil" is Anna Curtis, a sex crimes prosecutor in Washington DC, who has just become engaged to Jack Bailey, chief of the DC homicide unit. Jack has a six-year-old daughter, Olivia, and his late wife, Nina Flores, had been killed four years earlier by one of the street gangs of Washington DC. Most investigators believe that that the crime was committed by MS-13, a notoriously violent and ruthless DC gang. The leader of this gang is Diablo, accurately named "the Devil." Diablo's skin is completely covered in tattooed hieroglyphs. His nose is two sunken holes; he has long black hair and two fleshy horns protruding from his forehead. Indeed, he is aptly named.

Diablo and his gang appear throughout the book as Anna Curtis and Jack Flores attempt to solve various gruesome crimes occurring in the DC area. There are many twists and turns, and a huge red herring that comes as a total surprise to the reader in the last third of the book. I really enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone who likes true-life crime fiction. The author's experience as a sex-crimes prosecutor for 12 years in Washington DC is evident on every page, and she is a superb writer. If I could give the book more than five stars, I would. Highly recommended.

Some of the best character writing I have read

There's a lot already said about this novel. I will honestly say it's worth 5 stars for quite a lot of reasons, but the reason I am choosing to highlight in this review is the skillful hard-hitting drawing of her characters.

It's easy to depict your main character. Writers want the reader to know them and preferably to like them since many in this genre want to write sequels.

Allison Leotta goes where few authors are brave enough to tread. She shows you her bad guys--in this case, a DC-based gang of teenage boys led by Diablo, who are as bad as it gets. She doesn't just hide the bad behind a curtain, she lets you see these dudes and it's chilling.

I remember working for Probation and Parole with an officer who came from DC and what he said about crime there would chill your blood on a summer day. This novel reads like how he described his experience. The sketches of these gang members are so vivid and strong you could use them for a mug shot. Writers, for certain, should read this book. It will teach you about writing memorable story people.

"Speak of the Devil" is the third book in the Anna Curtis series, following Law of Attraction and Discretion and this is my favorite to date.

Anna Curtis, a sex crimes prosecutor in Washington DC, is a savvy, sassy protagonist. She is prosecuting members of the MS-13 gang, said to be one of the worst (if not THE worst), in the United States. Leading up this gang is Diablo, tattooed and embellished to look like the devil.

I'm a big fan of "Law and Order SVU" and "Criminal Minds" on television so this book was right up my alley. Great characterization; strong, well-spelled-out plot; good sense of place - all these pieces fit together very well and made this a super novel. Oh, and a totally unexpected plot twist caught me totally off guard.

I thought this was a great book and I highly recommend it - if you have a strong stomach.

NOTE: There is strong language and violence including sex crimes in this book.

Cliche, trope, meme and allegory overload. And not in a good way.

I guess sooner or later someone associated with the "New South Africa" had to write this work. Yeal Farber, an ex-pat SA resident in Vancouver, drew the lucky straw and presents a pimped-up NSA version of the original play.

Spiced up with three arguably non-consensual sex scenes the reader and audience are exposed to an avalanche of visual and verbal cliches, tropes, memes and allegories that...in stage form...runs to about 90 minutes. Hipster audiences in SA and on the fringe theater circuit abroad are driven to wild ecstasy as they spot the "deep and meaningfuls" and exclaim at the play's "relevance" to 20 years of post-apartheid angst. It's all part of the game, right?

As a script, it's easy to imagine the work as the winner of a challenge-task assigned to competing syndicates of third-year Arts students at Wits. And deservedly so. For that's about the level at which it sits.

Try this: take out the sex scenes and experience how it instantly feels like cardboard left out the rain.

Athol Fugard can rest easy. MJ presents no threat to his crown.

I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PLAY (and the book) to anyone who is prepared to be jarred, jolted and challenged about the themes of identity, privilege and connection.
