Texts from Bennett, by Mac Lethal

Hardworking Kansas City rapper Mac Lethal has a problem, and his name is Bennett.

Mac's wannabe gangsta cousin is seventeen, uses drugs and foul language, claims to be 13 percent black, and swears he speaks "da female language." (Strangely that last one sort of seems true.)

But as different as they are, when Bennett and his mom lose their home, Mac's got their backs. They're family after all. Sure, it takes patience to live with the eternally smoked-out Bennett and the pill-popped Aunt Lily, but he can handle it.

You know who can't? Mac's very pretty, very WASPy, very uptight girlfriend. So as his once-peaceful household gets completely crazy, Mac learns that wanna-be-Crips are thicker than water, that his little cousin--flawed, irreverent, and basically a Saturday morning cartoon gone horribly wrong--has become his mentor, and that he really has no idea what's up with girls.

Advance praise for Texts from Bennett

"In Texts from Bennett, rapper Mac Lethal shows his storytelling chops through the voice of his (imaginary?) cousin Bennett. The author's portrayal of poverty, drug use, and the working poor white folks' struggle to get by has serious street cred." -- Rollie Welch, Library Journal

"Brilliant." -- Joe Toeben, Media Snobs (4.5/5 stars)

"It will be the best $9 you'll ever spend, partly for the hilarious and at times strikingly graphic story, and the fact that you get Mac Lethal's new album for free when you order the book." --Gavin Muirhead, HefferBrew

From Booklist
Kansas City rapper Lethal presents a well-intended, albeit a little uneven, first novel. The voice is inconsistent, and the story line seems forced at times, but the heart of the novel is pure. Mac is a 30-year-old professional white rapper who is self-educated and making a living by working on the road and in the studio. He has a beautiful and wealthy fiancée, lives in a new home, and enjoys a good glass of wine. The conflict begins when his down-and-out aunt and cousin Bennet move in. Seventeen-year-old Bennet is all “gangsta.” He is not black, although he contends, “I’m thirteen percent black, man!” And although Mac intends to help Bennet, it is Bennet who educates Mac on accepting people for who they are. This is a necessary novel that follows the phenomenon of poor white teens diving into black cultural stereotypes. The language is rough but true, and tough issues are addressed with care and understanding. --Mark Eleveld

Review
"The author's portrayal of poverty, drug use, and the working poor white folks' struggle to get by has serious street cred...Who says books with street slang can only be told from an African American point of view? Bennett's voice is authentically rough and he knows how to get by on any means necessary. His Crip-esque ride or die loyalty will impress seasoned street lit readers, but at times lengthy sidebars drag down the story. Still, it's an interesting and impressive debut." -- Rollie Welch, Library Journal

From the Author
Without giving too much away, the book is an ode to how I met my wife and it's a love story. It was just a cool thing to be a part of. One thing I'll say, just to be clear, is this was never a thing I intended on doing. It just kind of fell in my lap. I wish that I could take credit and be like, "Oh yeah, I had a vision for this and I'm a genius." It was nothing like that at all. It was really a matter of, out of nowhere, the Tumblr page exploded and all of the sudden I had this book deal.

This book is a great read. I finished it the first day I received it. I have know several people like his cousin Bennett in my life. Extremely rough around the edges but if you are one of their trusted so loyal. This made it a more compelling read for me. Well worth the price of entry.

Nice Read
By Cheyenne L.
I finished this book just a few short hours ago and let me tell you, I was pleasantly surprised. I bought the book solely for entertainment purposes (I had seen a few "texts from Bennett" on the web and couldn't stop laughing) but I ended up with more. I laughed, I cried (mostly from laughter but there are heartfelt moments in there), and increased my vocabulary. Mac Lethal is well versed in beautiful words and I commend him for weaving them into everyday speech. It's refreshing to read words that challenge me and send me running for the dictionary. The book also made me think about the way I look at some of today's youth. Sure I still believe that they should pull their pants up (if I wanted to see their backsides I would pull down their pants myself) but I will now look for who they are, not just what I see. Bennett starts out as a typical hoodlum, but from the love his cousin shows him, he begins to learn that a hard day's work is good for him and that he has a wonderful role model. Mac shows you that there is good in him, even if he is unconventional.

Though this isn't the type of book that I normally go for, I highly recommend it to anyone who wants a good laugh, and a lovely ending. Kudos to Mac for a great read, and I hope that Bennett is still doing well.

Acquainted with the Night: Stories, by Lynne Sharon Schwartz

A rich and diverse collection of stories detailing life in all its daily battles and yearnings
Lynne Sharon Schwartz is a master of tone, deft at creating realistic settings and characters. In Acquainted with the Night, she unleashes sixteen wickedly smart, wholly believable short stories. In the title story, for instance, a man’s nocturnal battle against a floating globule in his eye forces him to question his very state of being. In “Mrs. Saunders Writes to the World,” an anonymous old woman attempts to force people to know her first name by writing “FRANNY” in big red letters all over her neighborhood. In another, a girl must to deal with the increasingly juvenile actions of her divorced mother. By turns darkly humorous, moving, and witty, Acquainted with the Night demonstrates Schwartz’s genius for detail.

The oldest stories from around the world tell about the "beginnings of things." This collection of thrilling tales of the Far North is no different. Narratives from the Land of the Midnight Sun describe winters as terrible times of cold and gloom, in a region where jagged mountain peaks tower over deep valleys that are home to giants and other spirits.
Specially written for young readers, these rousing Norse myths bring to life a land populated by brave warriors, cruel giants, mischievous dwarfs, and other fantastic beings. Sixteen tales include accounts of "How Odin Lost His Eye," "The Dwarf's Gifts," "The Giantess Who Would Not," "Loki's Children," "The Magic Apples," and eleven other enchanting sagas.

Plum Deadly (PIE IN THE SKY MYSTERIES Book 1), by Ellie Grant

In this cozy mystery, a young woman is framed by her boss for embezzlement and flees to her aunt’s pie shop—but when her ex-boss turns up dead on their doorstep she must start her own investigation to find the killer—before he finds her.

CHOCOHOLIC CREAM. BOUNTIFUL BLUEBERRY. LOTSA LEMON MERINGUE. EVEN DANGEROUSLY DAMSON.

Who could resist such pies? Who would even want to resist the pie shop that makes them? Certainly not the residents of Durham, North Carolina, and the little bakery and café called Pie in the Sky is one of the most popular meet-up places in town.

Unjustly accused of cooking the books, Maggie Grady is forced to retreat from her high-flying New York financial career to the town where she grew up. Her aunt Clara greets her with open arms and a job at the family-owned business that has baked the best pies in the South for over forty years. Unfortunately, while Maggie is determined to return to banking, her reputation there seems permanently in the pits. That is, until her old boss, Lou, visits with news that he’s found the real crook. Before he can reveal the details, though, Maggie finds his body right behind the pie shop.

With only her own word that Lou planned to exonerate her, Maggie is in the spotlight. The police seem to suspect that Aunt Clara’s damson pie may not be just dangerously delectable, but downright deadly. Maggie doesn’t just have her own name to clear; she has to make sure that her aunt’s beloved business isn’t harmed, either. Yummy local reporter Ryan Summerour appears eager to help, and Maggie can’t help hoping that it’s not just the police who find her a person of interest—but Ryan, as well. She’d thought it challenging to make the perfect pie crust that Aunt Clara demands, but that turns out to be nothing compared with finding a murderer. . . .

After being fired from her New York banking job for embezzlement, Maggie returns home to Durham, North Carolina, to help with her aunt’s pie shop. Her ex-boss Louis shocks her by coming to the shop and telling her he knows who really stole the money, and he is going to have a press conference to clear her name. Before that can happen, though, Maggie finds his body outside the back door of the shop. Reporter Ryan Summerour helps her learn that Louis was poisoned. After being away for years, Maggie discovers that life in Durham is more appealing than a return to New York, as is time spent with Ryan. Still, there’s the matter of the unsolved murder and the embezzlement charge. After Maggie’s laptop is stolen, it’s clear the killer may be nearby, and she and Ryan work to solve the case. The “pie mystery” is definitely a cozy trend at the moment (watch out, cupcakes!), and readers of Ellery Adams’ series will surely want to add Grant to their reading (and baking) lists. --Amy Alessio

From the Author
We loved writing PLUM DEADLY and are hard at work on the second book in the series, Murderous Mince. We set the story in Durham because of the beautiful campus of Duke University and the large number of pie shops there. Writing about food and murder seem to go well together. we hope you enjoy the story!

Plum Deadly is plum delightful!

When a murder victim, Maggie Grady's former boss Lou, is found on the pie shop's back step Maggie looks like prime suspect #1. But with Lou about to clear Maggie's name on embezzlement charges with an announcement of the real thief and an unsavory business man trying a little too hard to buy Aunt Clara's shop at any cost, there are plenty of other suspects to go around!

This first in a new series is a delicious threat. Maggie and her Aunt Clara are wonderful new characters. I had a great time hanging out with them in their pie shop Pie In The Sky. I don't even eat pie and it made me hungry! A fast and entertaining read, I was kept guessing until the surprising conclusion of this great book. I really look forward to the next installment in this new and hopefully long running series.

NOTE: Recipe lovers will be thrilled with the recipes included for flaky pie crust and 3 tasty pies!

Twelve years ago, Maggie Grady left Durham, North Carolina for Manhattan. She became successful and returned home once to attend the funeral of Uncle Fred; who with his wife Aunt Clara raised her when her parents died. Six weeks ago, her world collapsed when her boss Louis Goldberg showed her documents proving she stole three million from a client. Her firm decided not to press charges, but took all her money and values to make remittance. Maggie had enough cash to buy a one-way bus ticket home. Filled with guilt over her treatment of her family and helpless anger over being the fall guy for a crime she did not commit, Maggie works at her Aunt Clara's Pie In The Sky restaurant while unable to obtain any banking position and also worrying about her relative's deteriorating mental state.

Apologetic Goldberg arrives at the pie shop insisting he will name the real embezzler at a news conference tomorrow; he refuses to say who the suspect is in spite of Maggie's pleading though she records the conversation. However, before he speaks publically, someone murders Goldberg, leaving his body blocking the shop's back door. Durham PD Detective Frank Waters suspects Maggie as the killer especially with Clara's "helpful" commentary and confiscates her cell as evidence. Reporter Ryan Summerour covers the homicide story, but also is attracted to Maggie.

The first Pie In The Sky culinary cozy is an enjoyable investigative whodunit. The cast is solid while the beleaguered protagonist with help from Ryan and somewhat Frank tries to prove her innocence; their discussions are wry and witty adding depth to the action-packed storyline. Readers will appreciate Team Grant's engaging mystery and alliterating recipes.

Soft Soil, Black Grapes: The Birth of Italian Winemaking in California (Nation of Nations), by Simone Cinotto

Winner of the 2013 New York Book Show Award in Scholarly/Professional Book Design From Ernest and Julio Gallo to Francis Ford Coppola, Italians have shaped the history of California wine. More than any other group, Italian immigrants and their families have made California viticulture one of America’s most distinctive and vibrant achievements, from boutique vineyards in the Sonoma hills to the massive industrial wineries of the Central Valley. But how did a small group of nineteenth-century immigrants plant the roots that flourished into a world-class industry? Was there something particularly “Italian” in their success?

In this fresh, fascinating account of the ethnic origins of California wine, Simone Cinotto rewrites a century-old triumphalist story. He demonstrates that these Italian visionaries were not skilled winemakers transplanting an immemorial agricultural tradition, even if California did resemble the rolling Italian countryside of their native Piedmont. Instead, Cinotto argues that it was the wine-makers’ access to “social capital,” or the ethnic and familial ties that bound them to their rich wine-growing heritage, and not financial leverage or direct enological experience, that enabled them to develop such a successful and influential wine business. Focusing on some of the most important names in wine history—particularly Pietro Carlo Rossi, Secondo Guasti, and the Gallos—he chronicles a story driven by ambition and creativity but realized in a complicated tangle of immigrant entrepreneurship, class struggle, racial inequality, and a new world of consumer culture.

Skillfully blending regional, social, and immigration history, Soft Soil, Black Grapes takes us on an original journey into the cultural construction of ethnic economies and markets, the social dynamics of American race, and the fully transnational history of American wine.

From Booklist
History professor Cinotto traces a unique path in this study of the origins of California’s wine industry. He focuses on the role of Italian immigrants in establishing those now-famous vineyards and wineries that came to dominate the business. Earlier historians have posited a translation of Italy’s Piedmont vineyards into the valleys north of San Francisco, but Cinotto marshals evidence that the Gallos, Rossis, Guastis, and other North Italians founded and grew their businesses along family, ethnic, and racial lines and had possessed little winemaking experience in their native Piedmont. They held onto the strong bonds of extended family, encouraging whole clan lines to depart Italy for America’s promise. In the process, they often exploited the labor of other immigrant groups, such as the Chinese, Japanese, and Mexicans. Remaining aloof and academically rigorous, Cinotto alludes only tangentially to the dysfunctional and frequently scandal-ridden generations that inherited these corporations whose worth grew exponentially after the repeal of Prohibition. --Mark Knoblauch

Review
"Cinotto adeptly identifies the origins of common stereotypes about California winemakers and unpacks those myths in readable prose. His core argument, that there is nothing natural or inevitable about ethnic niche markets, is important and well-supported by his evidence."-Journal of American Ethnic History

"Clearly organized and written, this book can be useful for sociologists interested in immigration and the formation of ethnic niches in distinct economic sectors. It will be of interest primarily to wine lovers, but it will also interest social scientists with concerns about the malleability of the concept of race."-William H. Friedland,Rural Sociology

“This is a fascinating look into the origins of the California wine industry. Simone Cinotto dispels the myth that Italian winemakers brought with them age-old knowledge and grapes from the Piedmont. In place of ethnic stereotype, Cinotto shows how Italian immigrant entrepreneurs with no background in viticulture (including the famed Gallo brothers) deftly negotiated the American ethno-racial landscape to found a niche industry, maneuver through the era of Prohibition, and create a mass market for American wine. A must read for those interested in immigration and business history, and fine wine!”-Mae Ngai,Columbia University

“In this important book, Cinotto shows how the success of California’s wine industry was not the product of environment and tradition but rather the result of the effective use (and the exploitation) of symbols and solidarities based on ethnicity.”-Fraser Ottanelli,University of South Florida

"This beautifully typeset book, with well-chosen black and white illustrations, draws the reader into the entrepreneurial spirit and immigrant group dynamic behind the success of California Italian wines. Engagingly written, Simone Cinotto's account deserves a wide distribution among economic, cultural, and migration historians and all who love wine. The book blends rich and colorful descriptions of food history with business intrigues and family passions. It is a story of high-stakes risks and economic rewards."-Mark I. Choate,American Historical Review

“Soft Soil, Black Grapes makes a significant contribution to our understanding of the place of immigrant entrepreneurs in an important American food industry. It offers an inspired interpretation of race and ethnicity that will be compelling to scholars of immigration and ethnic history, and an interpretation of regional Italian difference that will engage those interested in Italian America. Like a good vintage, this story of the origins of winemaking in California will only get richer with time.” -Donna Gabaccia, author of We Are What We Eat: Ethnic Food and the Making of Americans

“Soft Soil, Black Grapes is nicely conceived, well written . . . and nuanced and original in its arguments.”-David Vaught,The Journal of American History

"History professor Cinotto traces a unique path in this study of the origins of California’s wine industry."-Booklist

"The writing style is engaging and the author uses a variety of sources to describe the cultural landscape of the California wine industry from its beginnings to modern times."-Library Journal

Italian Immigrants and the Origins of the Wine Industry in California
By Kenneth Scambray
In Soft Soil, Black Grapes, Simone Cinotto has made an original contribution not only to California wine-making history, but to the history of immigration in the U.S. before WWII. Focusing on the winemakers Andrew Sbarboro, the founder of the Italian Swiss Colony Winery, Ernest and Julio Gallo, and Secondo Guasti, founder of the Italian Vineyard Company in what is now Rancho Cucamonga, Cinotto argues that these early winemakers, all from northern Italy, did not necessarily bring old-world viniculture skills to America. Rather, they succeeded as businessmen by exploiting the growing ethnic economy in America at the time through social and cultural capital.
Cinotto's well-researched history draws upon archives from northern California to southern California. It is widely known that the original Italian immigrants to northern California came from northern Italy, from A. P. Giannini, Marco Fontana, Domenico Ghirardelli, and Giovanni Pedroncelli, Robert Mondavi, and the Cellas to Secondo Guasti, Andrew Sbarbaro, and the Gallos.
What distinguishes these northern Italian immigrants is that they came not as peasants looking for work, but as businessmen looking to exploit the new markets that they imagined would be awaiting them in America. Some, such as Ghirardelli and Guasti, immigrated first to South America and Mexico, where they began their New World business careers, before they migrated to America. They brought with them their business experiences and also a higher degree of literacy than their southern Italian counterparts who would make up the vast majority of the Italian immigrants coming to American.
As Cinotto explains, Sbarboro, as well as all the other Italian businessmen, could not have become successful without the labor of those southern Italian immigrants, as well as other immigrants, that came West. The unique contribution to immigrant studies that Cinotto makes in Soft Earth, Black Grapes is how the immigrant economy worked for Sbarboro, Guasti, and the Gallos, as well as his workers, in spite of their low wages. In the exchange of what Cinotto calls social capital, the winemakers hired Italian immigrants at a lower and even, it could be argued, an exploitive pay scale. But in return the laborers had a more secure working environment. At Secondo Guasti's Italian Vineyard Company, Mexican and southern Italians worked as laborers and foremen, while Guasti's top managers were from his home region and spoke his dialect. Japanese labor contractors provided Guasti with the bulk of his seasonal workers, but not always at a fair pay scale.
Soft Soil, Black Grapes is a window into the workings of the immigrant economy, not just Italian but by implication all immigrant communities before World War II and well into the twentieth-first century. Ethnic communities, whether urban or rural, are not just cultural entities, but enterprise zones where immigrants have always relied on each other culturally and economically to succeed, from the Japanese and Italian farmers in the West before World War II to Chinatowns, Little Italies, and Barrios throughout the U.S.
However, these same economic opportunities were not available to Native Americans and African Americans. For the careful reader, Cinotto's study opens yet another important discourse over the issue of race in America: who is or is not "white."
Cinotto has laid the basis for further studies on how all immigrant communities succeed in spite of resistance, historical and contemporary, to their settlement in America. Ken Scambray, Univ. of La Verne.

California Winemaking
By Leif Hatlen
This was a fascinating book weaving together many different subjects: the birth of winemaking in California, Italian immigration to Californa (and for good measure all of the United States), modern Italian history, and immigration in general. I bought this book because I have a long interest in winemaking and in particular winemaking in California. However the author's observations on the general subject of immigration, for me became the most interesting parts of the book. The other parts were great, but the comments, observations on immigration to the United States during the late 1800s and earlier 1900s were wonderful. As a second-generation member of an immigrant family I found the comments right on. In particular his comments that immigrants come to join with other immigrants from the same area in economic activities and that this '...circumstance totally conflicts with the popular image of the wandering migrant searching the world over for work and freedom...' is a concept that I had known about but had really not known how universal it probably is.

Innovative well documented designs. Nicely illustrated with easy to follow instructions. There are projects for the novice tatters, with beautiful designs for the advanced. The patterns are an exquisite collection. I wish everyone could meet this author as I have, her enthusiasm for tatting is contagious. Watching Monica Hahn work her magic with the tatting shuttle sparked a tremendous interest in me to learn this form of needlework. A book such as this will give many hours of pleasure and assist anyone's level of expertise. There are also harder to find types of tatting in this book such as cluny or petal stitch tatting. The author has included how-to instructions as well as project patterns for this unusual tatting type. This book is a great addition to any tatters library.

great!

This is a great little book - quite a few pattern, various designs - snowflakes, an angel, butterflies, little doiles, and a 3-D umbrella! Great for a shower, or if you have Travelers insurance. (use black thread)
Small section on Cluny tatting - and it's all you need - i'm a beginner and i learned cluny just fine from it! I think there are basic tatting instructions, but i learns from Linden's Easy tatting, so I breezed by them.
Great book for the price!

Mathematical Foundations of Fluid Mechanics
By Utah Blaine
The title and many of the Amazon reviews of this book are misleading in my opinion. This book should have been titled `The Mathematical Foundation of Fluid Mechanics'. This book describes, in gory detail, the fundamental mathematics of viscous fluid flow. The text is, obviously, heavy on vector and tensor calculus. The first few chapters review the basic theorems of vector and tensor calcular relevent to fluid dynamics. The basic equations of fluid dynamics are then derived, and the analysis is extended to viscous flow. Finally, Aris discusses coordinate transformation and tensor analysis (that is really more of a lead-in to GR than fluid dynamics, although it is interesting to see how this all ties together!). This is NOT a `complete' text in hydrodynamics. There is no discussion of turbulence, supersonic flow, instabilities, etc. This is a text on the mathematical (and geometrical) foundations of hydrodynamics. As such, I view this as an advanced text for a researcher who wants to understand hydrodynamics at it's most complete, fundamental mathematical level. If you are searching for any other type of hydrodynamics text, just move on. The reason that I only gave this book four stars was because I feel that hydrodynamics is a much richer discipline than what is contained within this book. Some of the most enthusiastic reviews greatly overstate the value of working through this book. You will learn quite a bit by going through this book, and it is a great text IF you want to study the foundations of hydrodynamics in great detail, but you will need (alot) more if you want to begin to appreciate fluid mechanics.

Very complete introduction to tensor analysis in 3 dimensions.
By Daverz
This would make a good introduction to tensors for physics students (e.g. for General Relativity), though the approach is a completely classical, using index notation; you won't find anything on manifolds or differential forms here. An interesting feature is an extensive chapter on local surface theory (e.g. Gaussian curvature, but only after introducing the full Riemann tensor), which is good for building intuition about curvature in higher dimensions. While the applications are all in n

Astor Place Vintage: A Novel, by Stephanie Lehmann

When a New York City vintage clothing shop owner’s recent purchases contain a hidden journal from 1907, her entire life will be turned upside down in this “insightful, charming, and wholly entertaining novel” (Khaled Hosseini, author of The Kite Runner).

Amanda Rosenbloom, proprietor of Astor Place Vintage, thinks she’son just another call to appraise and possibly purchase clothing from a wealthy, elderly woman. But after discovering a journal sewn into a fur muff, Amanda gets much more than she anticipated. The pages of the journal reveal the life of Olive Westcott, a young woman who had moved to Manhattan in 1907. Olive was set on pursuing a career as a department store buyer in an era when Victorian ideas, limiting a woman’s sphere to marriage and motherhood, were only beginning to give way to modern ways of thinking. As Amanda reads the journal, her life begins to unravel until she can no longer ignore this voice from the past. Despite being separated by one hundred years, Amanda finds she’s connected to Olive in ways neither could ever have imagined.

Amazon.com Review
Author One-on-One: Stephanie Lehman and Lauren Willig

A native New Yorker, Lauren Willig thoroughly enjoyed getting to travel back in time to a different point in the city's history with Stephanie Lehman's Astor Place Vintage (although she will confess to owning no vintage clothing of her own, unless one counts the relics from college at the back of her closet). Lauren Willig is the author of eleven novels, all of which go back and forth between past and present: the bestselling Pink Carnation series, set between the Napoleonic Wars in the early nineteenth century and London in 2004, and her new stand-alone novel, the New York Times bestseller The Ashford Affair, which zig-zags back and forth between Edwardian England, World War I London, 1920s Kenya, and 1999 New York.

Q. What inspired you to write Astor Place Vintage?

A. My biggest inspiration for Astor Place Vintage is the metropolis of Manhattan. Ever since moving here from San Francisco, I’ve been fascinated, especially through the architecture, by how much the past still asserts itself into the city’s present. It’s so easy to imagine people from a hundred years ago walking down the same streets and living in the same buildings. This sense of shared space between two time periods really captured my imagination.

The first decade of the 20th century particularly attracted me because it was an amazing time of transition. Horses clipped-clopped on the streets while subways ran underground. Vaudeville theaters showed moving pictures. Lots of Victorian attitudes were still enforced, like restaurants that seated unescorted women in separate dining rooms and hotels that refused to rent them rooms. Meanwhile, women were increasingly working outside the home and experiencing unprecedented independence in a booming urban environment that encouraged everyone, male or female, to become avid consumers -- especially in those big new department stores.

Q. I loved how you brought us into the life of Olive in early 20th century New York City. How did you discover so many details about department stores at the time?

A. I spent a lot of time at the New York Public Library’s Science, Industry and Business branch on 34th Street. Ironically, this is located in what used to be the B. Altman Department Store. They have a huge collection of trade magazines from the era like Dry Goods Economist and Corset and Underwear Review, so I was going straight to the sources. I even found some Siegel-Cooper employee newsletters from that period on microfilm. I also read every novel to be found that had the setting of a department store.

Q. Amanda’s Astor Place Vintage felt like a real vintage store to me! Do you visit vintage clothing stores often? Do you have a favorite?

A. I’ve been attracted to vintage for years, and it has not been good for my closet situation. When you’re constantly fighting the urge to buy one of those portable clothing racks that people use for big parties, you know you’re in trouble. Amanda’s store is modeled on some shops I like in the East Village. But I enjoy digging for buried treasure, so I buy most of my vintage clothing at thrift stores and flea markets.

Q. Amanda works so diligently to restore some of the old garments she acquires. Do you sew also?

A.Though I’m not nearly as proficient as Amanda, I do love to sew, and this is actually a recent development that occurred in the process of writing the novel. You could say I aspired to be more like the character I was creating. I discovered that the break from words, sentences, and computer screens is like a mental vacation. Plus, as a novelist, it can take years to complete your project, but you can sew a dress in a few days, wear it, and have that gratification.

Q. What’s your favorite item of vintage clothing in your wardrobe?

A.I see you’ve saved the hardest question for last. After much deliberation, I’m going to say that it’s a Marimekko/Design Research sixties shift dress that I wheedled from my mother. I even have a home movie of her wearing it when I was little. Too bad it won’t fit until I lose those five pounds I’ve been trying to get rid of for the past ten years.

A great debut from Stephanie Lehmann!
By H. Barlow
I received an electronic copy of this book free of charge from Netgalley in exchange for my honest opinion.

There are so many things I loved about this book...the switching between 1907 and 2007, the vintage clothing, finding out about New York City at the turn of the century, what women endured and how they were expected to act in the early 1900's. I don't think there was even a slight chance that I wouldn't enjoy reading ASTOR PLACE VINTAGE.

Amanda Rosenbloom was an extremely likeable character I even let her off for being involved with a married man, a huge no-no in my book! Why waste your time chasing and spending time with someone who will never truly be yours, I've never understood that. Anyway, Amanda eventually arrives at the same conclusion - the fact that she is wasting away her best years with a man she will never marry or raise a family with - so an aspect of Amanda's side of the story involves meeting a new guy.

On collecting her latest finds for her vintage clothing store, Astor Place Vintage, Amanda stumbles upon a journal from 1907, she wonders if she should read it since she is so intrigued by that era or return it (sounds familiar? - girl finds diary struggles with her conscience over reading it, see my review of Golden here). What Amanda finds in the journal is an account of life in New York City in 1907 written by Olive Westcott, a high society woman with ambitions to have a career as a buyer in a time when women of her background don't work.

Soon after completing the rather large purchase of vintage clothing from Jane Kelly, her landlord calls informing her that the lease will not be renewed. Business is good but not so great that Amanda can find another well-priced space in New York City, so she must find a way to keep Astor Place Vintage going!

The chapters switch between Amanda in the present and Olive in the past, representing Amanda reading Olive's journal. Amanda begins to have vivid dreams based on the entries in Olive's journal, she also begins to notice older buildings and link them to Olive when she is wandering around Manhattan.

Olive's father runs a Woolworth's and is offered the manager's position at the flagship NYC store, so they move together from the suburbs to a Manhattan apartment. When Olive's father dies prematurely she is left with no inheritance and must find work. She also is forced to move out of her home as single women are not allowed to live in that particular building.

It was interesting to read about all the "rules" women had to follow in the 1900's, they really weren't able to make many choices and were expected to marry, raise a family and look after their husband. Olive didn't want to follow these antiquated rules and was of the thinking that women deserved more rights.

Towards the end Amanda realizes just how connected she is to Olive and how this connection could help save her business.

By the time I come to pick my top reads of 2013 I am going to have such a hard time! I seem to be proclaiming every book I finish at the moment "the best so far this year" and we are only half way through! ASTOR PLACE VINTAGE is one of the best books I have read this year and probably beyond that. It's history, it's relationships, it's clothes...and the writing! If I didn't know otherwise I would have no clue that this was STEPHANIE LEHMANN'S debut novel, the writing is superb, the descriptions spot on. And I have looked a few things up, since I live so close to NYC I was interested in the history. It is clear that she put a whole lot of research into this outstanding story! I can't wait to see what she releases next.

You CANNOT tell this book by it's cover...it's so much better!
By SpunStories B.
I was given a paperback copy of ASTOR PLACE VINTAGE by the author, Stephanie Lehmann, in exchange for an honest opinion.

I have to admit that when I finally began to read it, I had low expectations, mainly because of the cover. But I'll get to that in a moment.

This is a well-written engaging novel that is hard to put down. ASTOR PLACE VINTAGE is a braided story of two women, Amanda living in NYC in 2007, and Olive, living in New York City in 1907. Unlike some books, in which the modern part is less interesting than the historical part, Ms. Lehmann has made both parts equally strong. Both Olive and Amanda are compelling characters, partly because they have flaws, they make mistakes, and they both have to struggle to earn a living as single women.

It is obvious that Ms. Lehmann is a gifted researcher. The 1907 part of the novel was replete with fascinating facts about how hard it was to survive at that time as a single woman. But, unlike some authors, Ms. Lehmann has used that information to pull you into that world.

This novel is a treat to read. Ms. Lehmann is a combination of a gifted storyteller and a gifted researcher, two sets of skills that are very different, and more commonly than not, do not go together in the same person. I am sure that she is going to have a very successful career as an historical novelist.

Now to that cover. I don't think Touchstone/Simon & Schuster is doing Ms. Lehmann any favors. It simply doesn't convey the message of the story at all. Instead of marketing this book as a serious look at women's issues, it gives the impression that this is yet another fluffy chick-lit yarn.

My recommendation would be to keep the gorgeous black and white photo in the background, but remove the foreground figure and all the pink, and instead replace it with two faces looking at each other, modern Amanda and 1907 Olive. You CANNOT tell this book by its cover! Five stars.

Synchronicity in New York City - between 1907 and 2007; and Olive and Amanda
By Cheryl Stout
What an excellent, well-written book this is!

"Astor Place Vintage" is actually two stories, tying into one, both taking place in New York City. The story is told in alternating chapters, with Amanda Rosenbloom living in The City in 2007 and owning and running Astor Place Vintage, buying and selling vintage clothing and accessories; and Olive Westcott, who has lived a privileged life, moving to The City with her father in 1907, wanting to become a department store buyer.

The novel does a wonderful job in allowing the reader glimpses into both woman's lives (we get to see a lot of Olive's life through a journal found by Amanda) showing the differences but also the similarities between the women in the story and also in the time periods.

There is a synchronicity in the women's lives that intertwined throughout the story, culminating in some surprises for both women.

What made "Astor Place Vintage" so special to me? Intricately drawn characters that felt very real - like women (and men) I'd like to know in real life, a plotline that kept me guessing and flipping pages as quickly as I could possibly read, surprising details of 1907 customs and mores, and reproductions of marvelous vintage photographs of The City adding a nice depth to the story.

NOTE: I was given an Advanced Reading Copy of this book in exchange for my honest review - and I am so glad that I was.
