From India, the chilli was taken through Central Asia and Turkey to Hungary, where it became the national spice in the form of paprika.

Though his subject is storied and complex, this workmanlike treatment from education and media writer Czarra is about as satisfying as Oliver Twist's gruel. Emphasizing facts and logistics at the expense of drama, Czarra offers a chronological study of global journeys taken by spices like cardamom, cinnamon and chili peppers. The result is more like a textbook than a culinary study; Czarra gets all the dates in but breezes by any number of human interest stories that could have made for much more compelling reading. While details regarding chili pepper use by Native Americans in 7,000 BC and ancient spice routes are interesting, far more instresting are asides on spice-based treatments used to cure Europeans' maladies and the incredible lore of little-known Chinese explorer Zheng He. Combined with a flat voice and rote delivery, this is a bland take on a subject that should be anything but. 40 color plates.

A book to spice up your reading list.

I happened across this book as I was reading through this series. It is a sort of cross-cultural introduction to spices, including touching on various cuisines (no, it is not a cookbook or a recipe book).
It is also not much more than an introduction to the complexity of the spice trade that was once so important. Think of the book as an introduction to how spices are used in various parts of the world, a catalog of intriguing diversity of spices. I found the best part to be the description of difference spices and how they are used in Africa and elsewhere. There is remarkable diversity in what is used as a spice, let alone how they are used.
This is a fun an interesting book for people interested in food and culture.

This is a great book to give you a solid starting point for spice history. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to see the good and the bad side of history and how our society was molded by the spice trade.

Interesting book

This provides a concise history of 5 spices. It gives you a global perspective. But if you're looking for recipes, this is not the book for you--no recipes included.
