About the Author
Charlotte MacLeod (1922–2005) was an internationally bestselling author of cozy mysteries. Born in Canada, she moved to Boston as a child, and lived in New England most of her life. After graduating from college, she made a career in advertising, writing copy for the Stop & Shop Supermarket Company before moving on to Boston firm N. H. Miller & Co., where she rose to the rank of vice president. In her spare time, MacLeod wrote short stories, and in 1964 published her first novel, a children’s book called Mystery of the White Knight.  In Rest You Merry (1978), MacLeod introduced Professor Peter Shandy, a horticulturist and amateur sleuth whose adventures she would chronicle for two decades. The Family Vault (1979) marked the first appearance of her other best-known characters: the husband and wife sleuthing team Sarah Kelling and Max Bittersohn, whom she followed until her last novel, The Balloon Man, in 1998.

Light, Modern Gothic without the Angst

While not as witty as MacLeod's Peter Shandy series, The Terrible Tide is fun and entertaining. The style is modern gothic complete with noises in the night and several options for both the love interest and villain. In contrast to the classic gothic heroine however, Holly is no-nonsense and well able to handle any problems that come up. She is also refreshingly intelligent and not given to stupid acts the reader knows are dangerous.

The Terrible Tide holds no shocking surprises or sudden revelations. As the plot flows smoothly along, the reader easily figures out its general direction; and Holly is only a few steps behind. The lag is just enough time to give the reader a smug sense of superiority without making the heroine look dense. This is not to say that the reader figures everything out. The solution is still foggy enough to keep the reader engaged and wondering how everything will come together.

As for faults, the characterization of the love interest is sketchy; and the reader might like to get to know him better before sending him off into the sunset with the heroine. Also, the ending is a bit abrupt with all the loose ends gathered together in one or two pages. Although, to be fair, the reader will probably have picked them up already and only need confirmation. MacLeod's flowing style and smooth writing voice make up for any weakness. The Terrible Tide is a pleasure to read.

The odd book out

Generally I'm not a huge fan of the books MacLeod writes as Alisa Craig -- the tongue-in-cheek cutesy melodrama is just a little *too* cozy for my tastes. Tbis book is different from those in her "Grub and Stakers" and "Janet Rhys" series, though -- it's a straightahead 1970's-Barbara-Michaels-style modern gothic, with a spunky-but-injured young heroine stranded in a dusty old heap of a house with two old ladies, ghostly noises in the night, and various threatening characters wandering in and out. If you like that kind of thing (and I do) it's a good read, although you will easily guess every "shocking plot twist" miles ahead of its revelation. I wish she'd write more like this one . . .

Pleasant Visit with an Appealing Heroine

Not among the best for this talented author but, nonetheless, a diverting few hours of entertainment. Were it not for the heroine, the book would be among the rare busts she has produced; however, young Holly saves the day. She is an injured former model who has taken essentially a housekeepers job to earn some money in the small community to which she has come to recover. Here her sister-in-law provides most of the labor to support Holly's brother in his hobby turned main occupation of woodworking. She soon finds that more than ghosts inhabit the quarters in which she works and lives. Not much in the way of adventure or excitement, but some well drawn "characters" and a not very mysterious mystery. Nothing much lost if you pass this by, but MacLeod fans should enjoy it as well as "cozy" readers for whom mystery is only one component they like in this type of work

Author Knows Her Terriers

I have owned and been owned by terriers for 25 years and this book is a good reminder of why we love them and how they are different and why. Makes me appreciate my terriers all over again and realize that any trainer who tells you they are "untrainable" is most likely just a lazy trainer! I highly recommend this book to all terrier owners. Start out with it with your pup and carry through to the heights of what you can achieve with your "untrainable" terrier! Best terrier training book I have read. I will give it 5 stars...especially for novice terrier owners/trainers.

Terrier is not an excuse for bad behavior!

I love that this book doesn't excuse bad behavior because your dog is a terrier. It simply lets you know you are going to have to be very diligent in your training and really patient with your pup.

This book was really helpful and it specifically addressed how to deal with many of the less desirable yet common terrier behaviors. Barking, over reactivity, prey drive, etc. It clearly walks you through the steps you will take with your dog to control these behaviors using only positive reinforcement. I say "control" and not "eliminate" because you can never train away a killer instinct. But you can keep it under control and give it (to take from Cesar Millan) rules, boundaries, and limitations.

It's set up simply so that you can skip right to your problem if you don't want the back story on terriers, thought I really recommend you read it even if you know what terriers were bred for. I already knew what terriers were bred for and that they were really high energy when we got our pup. But this really helped me understand him and his actions on a deeper level. "High energy" doesn't tell you the same thing as "bred to stalk, chase, catch, kill, and guess what that looks like when you put it on a leash?"

That said, when you are dealing with a fixated, reactive dog, and like me, you are new to training, this book is not going to solve all your problems cleanly and tie them up with little bow. I'm also seeking outside help from a professional trainer and it's still tough work.

This book covers a lot of issues and if you are lucky, it might be all you need. But if you are still having trouble, it's okay to get more help. It also addresses how to find quality help for your dog! What to look for in classes and how to spot unsafe environments.

If you're looking for a book that combines what a terrier is, why he behaves the way he does and how to teach him to control those behaviors that are unsafe and bothersome, then this is a great choice!

Great Reference for Terrier Training

This book was very insightful into our toy fox/manchester terrier mix's intrinsic behaviors and using them to our advantage in training. We've noticed marked differences in our little guy's behavior after implementing the material covered in this book. It's a great value!

There were instructions for raising and supporting several types of roofs, constructing winding stairs, spacing fluting evenly on columns, modeling and mounting friezes, etc. Carpenters were thus able to plan, build, and decorate complex, ornate structures.
The American Builder's Companion includes rules and definitions of practical geometry and discussion of methods for drawing basic shapes and cutting them out of solids. There are designs for interior ornament — patterns for decorative cornices, moldings, banisters, stucco ceiling ornaments, mantels, etc., as well as designs for doorways and windows. Benjamin also deals with problematic structural elements, and finally provides full plans and elevations for private houses, wooden churches, and a court house.
Important as one of the single, major disseminators of a style which became almost ubiquitous in the Northeast, Benjamin's book also contains a rich store of evidence on problems and achievements of early American builders. Direct references to tools, materials, common practices and processes, and unconscious indication of taste and aesthetic values of the time will be invaluable to students of architecture, experts in restoration, and readers interested in American history and culture. Great pattern book

This is one of the great pattern books of the nineteenth century. This, and others like it, were responsible for a greater proportion of excellent buildings not designed by architects than at any point since in the history of the USA.

Good historic resource

This is an early pattern book that was in circulation during the mid and late 1800's. It is good only as a historic resource for those wishing to further their studies in American architecture. It is not a practical book for a practicing architect, builder, or restoration buff. The plates are beautiful and the descriptive geometry is fascinating.

About the Author
GARY BAILEY was the goalkeeper for Manchester United when they won the FA Cup in 1983 and 1985, and he was twice capped for England. He was an ambassador in South Africa’s successful bid to host the 2010 FIFA World Cup and has been one of South Africa’s top motivational speakers for almost 10 years. He has a BSc in physics and an MBA from Henley in Oxford, where he focused on Leadership.

RAKESH SONDHI is the MD of BMC Global Services Ltd, a specialist strategy and leadership consultancy based in the UK, and the owner of BMC College of Leadership, an organization dedicated to developing leadership skills in people from the age of 15. In addition, he is a visiting professor at the University of Buckingham and has been part of the Visiting Faculty of Henley Business School for 20 years.

Every Auditor & Forensic Accountant will enjoy this book!

Gerry Zack's new book is a must read for external auditors, internal auditors, forensic accountants and fraud examiners. Each chapter covers the similarities & differences between IFRS accounting and GAAP accounting, then he details the accounting fraud schemes used to circumvent those standards and then presents an actual case example. At the end of each case example he lists who went to prison, for how long, and how large the resulting fines and/or settlements were. I highly recommend this book for accounting professors who teach graduate level auditing or forensic accounting. All too often auditing is taught as theory geared toward passing professional licensing exams and it's all too rarely taught as "how to properly audit so your audit client doesn't pull a fast one on you." My only complaint is the author doesn't list which (Big 4 mostly) accounting firm blew the audits in the first place and gave clean audit opinions to dirty companies but from a book sales perspective I can see why he left the names of the embarrassed accounting firms out. But other than that one complaint, it's a great read with lots and lots of real life case examples of major corporations who've gotten caught cooking their books using some very intricate fraud recipes. About the Author

Interesting projects - but not for the unsupervised teen

Mr. Iannini continues the tradition he began in his first "Electronic Gadgets" book by offering up more than a fair share of laser devices. For this reason alone I don't think it is a good idea for your high schooler to play around with building the devices in this book unsupervised. Then there are the devices such as the "Marx Generator", which is a clever way of charging a number of capacitors in parallel, then discharging them in series. Originally described by E. Marx in 1924, Marx generators are probably the most common way of generating high voltage impulses for testing when the voltage level required is higher than available charging supply voltages. Again, this is another high voltage device which along with the Tesla coil and 400K volt DC generator can be potentially dangerous. The third category of projects that require adult supervision are those that invade the personal space/privacy of others - i.e. adults should always be on hand to explain why it is not OK to nauseate, confuse, and snoop on others for the purpose of learning electronics. The projects are interesting, but the reader/hobbyist should be an adult who is already knowledgeable of electronics and electronic construction techniques. The instructions in this book are not detailed enough for the novice. Also, the price tag on most of the devices is greater than $100, so they are not cheap either. Finally, and most importantly, the reader should have a penchant for safety. Thus if you want to get your teenager interested in electronics via interesting "cool" projects, and you are already knowledgeable yourself and willing to do full-time supervision of the construction, this is probably a good book over which the two of you can both learn and bond. "MORE Gadgets" better than first book

The first Electronic Gadgets for the Evil Genius book had devices that were a bit more sci-fi and cool, but although the information was interesting, not many are going to actually be able to build any of them, as parts will be expensive and hard to find. This second GADGETS book actually has a few circuits that you could actually build with parts that are more available.

As I said in the other reviews on this series of "evil genius" books, be carefull as there are many books in this series, but it is the one that states "GADGETS" in the titles that you want, if you are wanting the circuits that will make you rub your hands together and twist your mustache as you make that sinister laugh.

very spiffy book!

i was impressed by how well Iannini understood infrared optics and temperature. This guy is very knowledgeable and is out there on the bleeding edge.
No, its not a paint by the dots hobby book by Mr. Rogers Neighborhood! This is an outta da box type book, where he pushes the boundaries of electronic engineering. Perfect for creative inventors.
And he might be pushing you somewhere you didn't expect! ( evil laugh)

Entertaining

I was looking for an entertaining book and A Matter of Trust by Lis Wiehl with April Henry certainly fit the bill. The main character, Mia Quinn, is a Seattle prosecutor and is talking with a colleague on the phone one evening only to be horrified to hear a shot ring out and hear no response from her friend. Mia is then given her colleague's murder case to solve, along with the help of a police detective with whom she has an unpleasant history.

The book is fast-paced and fairly well written. I found the plot line a little confusing at times but maybe that is just because it is a murder mystery and the author wants the reader to be in the dark a little. I enjoyed the inevitable twist at the end.

I felt that a few of the minor story lines were not well developed and either should have been given more time or else left out entirely as they were a distraction. However, I note that this is the first book of the series so perhaps some of those story lines will be teased out in later books. I also didn't think that the main character was always believable or even as well developed as she could have been.

I thought this book was pretty good and I read through it quickly so if you are looking for a beach read for the summer, I would recommend it. If you are looking for something with more character development or something to really think about, I would keep looking.

When Murder Stalks Your Colleagues, Who Can You Trust?

Prosecutor Mia Quinn is on the phone with her friend and colleague, Colleen, when the unthinkable happens. She hears a shot. When Colleen doesn't answer, she thrusts the phone at the son telling him to try to talk to her and after calling the police rushes to Colleen's house where her friend is bleeding to death. Mia arrives too late. Detective Charlie Carlson picks up the phone Colleen was on and hears screams on the other end. Whatever's happening it's in Mia's house, and it's her daughter.

From the heart-stopping opening to the exciting conclusion, this book it's hard to put down. The characters are sympathetic. Mia, a recent widow, is trying to raise her two children and hold on to her job in the District Attorney's office - not an easy task. Charlie is the kind of police officer you love. He doesn't mind taking chances, and he's there when you need him. After Colleen's death, Mia is tapped as the lead for the murder investigation, and Charlie is the detective assigned -- an excellent combination for a contentious partnership.

If you want a mystery that keeps you guessing right to the end, this is a winner. Although the search is on from the first pages for the killer, it comes as a surprise at the end. However, there are enough clues that the solution is not out of the blue. A well done mystery.

The perfect amount of mystery and suspense, along with characters you want to spend time with and get to know better

Author Lis Wiehl is a prominent trial lawyer who regularly appears on Fox News Channel as a legal analyst and reporter. She is also a bestselling author of five books. Her Triple Threat Club series has received high praise, warranting comparisons to James Patterson. Now Wiehl introduces us to a brand-new series, written with contributor April Henry. A MATTER OF TRUST is the first book in the Mia Quinn Mystery series.

A couple of months ago, Mia Quinn lost her husband in a car accident, forcing her to return to work full-time as a county prosecutor. This is quite an adjustment, not only for her but also her two children. Gabe is 14, just entering high school, and wants to fit in with his peers. Brooke is four, and has recently started waking up with night terrors. Mia is struggling to be everything she needs to be for her kids, and also maintain her reputation as an excellent prosecutor. To add to her stress, she has discovered a few secrets her husband had been keeping before he died, including a mound of debt that is now hers to dig out from under.

Mia is chatting on the phone with her fellow colleague and friend, Colleen, when suddenly there's a loud bang and the sound of her friend hitting the floor. Horrified, Mia listens to Colleen's final breaths. She is offered the chance to head up the investigation into Colleen's death. Mia balks, not sure if she can afford to spend more time away from home. Then she thinks of the bills piling up, and how she wants to do whatever she can to solve her friend's murder, so she accepts the job. She starts working with Detective Charlie Colson to uncover the clues into Colleen's slaying. And there are plenty of suspects to keep them busy.

Meanwhile, Mia is also bringing a case to the Grand Jury regarding the suicide of a high school boy. Darin Dane hung himself after extensive bullying --- both physical and cyber --- by several classmates. Mia is looking to hold the boys responsible and accountable for the bullying that caused Darin to take his own life. This is a sad, yet relevant and riveting subplot.

The main storyline, of course, is the mystery of Colleen's murder. Wiehl's real-life legal experience brings the story to life with authenticity and energy that grips and fascinates. It's a constant case of whodunit, with lots of bumps and forks in the road along the way. Mia is one smart chick, completely professional and vulnerable at the same time. She is everywoman. She is the woman who wants to do it all and can't quite figure out how. But, as a friend advised, "Where your feet are, that's where your heart should be." So that's how Mia tries to operate, although in her heart-of-hearts, she knows that her family --- her kids --- will always come first. There are also a couple of potential love interests that could develop in subsequent books.

A MATTER OF TRUST is an intense, fast-paced thriller --- a true page-turner. It combines the perfect amount of mystery and suspense, along with characters you want to spend time with and get to know better. Although published by Thomas Nelson, this book doesn't contain a lot of "Christian" content, but rather infuses bits and pieces of faith within. It's clear in this first book of the series that Mia has a bit of developing to do regarding her spiritual condition. I personally enjoyed the overall "real-world" feel and appreciated the lack of preachiness. If gritty crime fiction is not your cup of tea, you would do well to leave this one on the shelf. But if you're a fan of authors like James Patterson and Harlan Coben, be sure to add Lis Wiehl to your list. You won't be disappointed.

About the Author
Sir George Etherege (born 1635, died 1692) was an English dramatist. He wrote the plays The Comical Revenge or, Love in a Tub in 1664, She Would if She Could in 1668, and The Man of Mode or, Sir Fopling Flutter in 1676.

Born in the first few decades of the seventeenth century, Aphra Behn is one of early literature s best-known female writers. Behn had the lucky distinction of being able to support herself strictly by her pen, something unheard of for women of her time. Throughout her long career, she wrote in various formspoetry, plays, proseand is known as a member of the fair triumvirate of wit alongside fellow scribes Eliza Haywood and Delarivier Manley. Although little is known about her early life, Behn s father held a post as lieutenant governor of Surinam, and Behn s experiences during her stay most likely formed the basis for her most famous work, Oroonoko. Behn was also a popular dramatist in her time, penning critical successes like The Rover and The Feigned Courtesans. Her literary exploits aside, Behn is also known to have acted as a political spy for King Charles II of England during the Second Anglo-Dutch War. Behn died in 1689, and is buried in Westminster Abbey.

Cheap, but not necessarily the best copy

This is a nice, light edition, and it's price is very attractive. However, reading restoration comedy can be a difficult task; without footnotes one misses a great deal of the cultural reference and punning that make these plays so much fun to read. Also, the absence of line numbers makes it a less than ideal copy for a class, and makes referencing the works in a paper almost impossible. If you're already acquainted with themes, culture, tropes and puns of the restoration, this copy would be a good choice, but otherwise I would recommend a more scholarly edition.

Textbook for senior SAGE class

Interesting, entertaining selection of period plays. I wish a small dictionary of pertinent, no longer used vocabulary words had been included. To understand the plays I had to purchase an additional period book of terminology.
