Tells the truth: the emperor has no clothes.

Adam Gollner is a brave man. He is one of those rare people who simply tells the truth and it shows in his prose. Again and again, he talks about people I know well over the past 20 years, again and again he describes them accurately. Most of the "aging community" is divided into two groups: the excitable crowd with scores of theories, none of them testable, and the careful scientists (like Liz Blackburn and Cal Harley) who do the work and shun the true believers. While we may (or may not) someday be able to reverse aging, most of the current claims are merely that: claims. As for immortality, it sells well in the tabloids but remains theology, not science. Gollner has the ability to describe everyone in the field, without sympathy, but equally without bias or rancor. He simply and accurately describes them as they actually are. I look forward to his next book: where else can I find someone who can tell me about what actually IS rather than about wishful thinking. Well done!

Excellent literary non-fiction

I picked this up after seeing the glowing reviews in both Harper’s Magazine and the Wall Street Journal. It’s definitely an incredible, incredible read. If you believe that you are physically immortal, be prepared to have your world-view challenged. (I also think you will come away a better person.) And if you are more inclined toward a particular branch of spiritual immortality, you will certainly learn a great deal about where the idea of eternal life came from as well as the numerous alternatives out there. And if, like myself (and the author), you have no alignment with any faith, you will still come away with a deeper understanding for the need to believe. As many reviewers have pointed out, one of Adam Leithe Gollner’s strengths is that he is so open to everyone in this book -- and his framework for approaching immortality allows us to find that openness as well. This is one of those books that can change your way of looking at the world.

And then there's the wild journey to David Copperfield’s island in search of the Fountain of Youth! Plus tons of unexpected discoveries, eccentric characters, and an engrossing exposition of where longevity science is at today. A perfect balance of science writing, narrative non-fiction, poetic prose, humor and philosophy. Get it, read it, delve into the history of eternity. Excellent, excellent writing.

Adam Leith Gollner's The Book of Immortality, science belief and magic behind living forever.

A religion, magic and science survey from antiquity to now, regarding humanity's quest to overcome death and defying age and disease.

Erudite and pop mingled with personal glimpses drawn from family and friends, from auntie Tiny's funeral notice, to an aging Jesuit professor Gervais to his buddy Raf Katigak.

The motive for his search is to find an intersection of religion, magic and science, wherein immortality is revealed as either fake or fact.

Neither of the 3 vectors survive Gollner's probing prose unscathed, journalism, often very funny, at times with a quirky twist all his own, witty and always limpid discourse worthy of the best academics.

The highlight of the book is how Gollner and his sidekick Raf, penetrate the creepy world of the magician David Copperfield, a world of illusionism and fakery and the pitifully vulnerable creature that is David, hiding behind his fountain of youth on his kitschy resort, a distopia in the Bahamas, designed to lure the b illionares of the day.

2013 finds immortality just as elusive as it was since man began to dream of how to defeat death.

A good read, lots of facts and laughs throughout.

A tip to the reader: If you have a property with a dubious water source, put it on the market as a fountain of youth.

Are You Gonna Kiss Me or Not? Daniel in Distress
I ENTER THE ROOM to find this uncreative sack in a suit sitting there, and then I find myself thinking of Casey. This isn’t unusual, since I do it all the time, but this is one of those moments I really wish she were here. I wish she were right next to me so we could be laughing about this in about an hour. I sorta know what’s about to happen. I know that in just a few moments, I’m about to be let go as the head songwriter for The Dandee Donuts show.

Yeah, I know. There’s a reason I haven’t really told many people about my stint on Dandee Donuts. Most surely think Daniel has gone into hiding, playing his guitar and trying to finally make an album that would make the Boss smile. But no. Daniel is in isolation in Seattle, where the weather seems to match his mood.

This show makes The Wiggles look genius. No offense to The Wiggles. They really are a great show for kids, but I am not married and don’t have any kids, and after working on Dandee Donuts, I don’t want kids. I don’t want them suckered by smiling corporate zombies like this one.

Daniel, have a seat, the rather soft handshake offers.

This guy’s name is Stan Terma-something. I always think Terminal. Like terminal cancer. I know it’s not Terminal, but I can’t help thinking it. He’s my boss’s boss and only gets involved in meetings like this because my boss, Cynthia, is too weak to let anybody go or make any sort of decision.

“It’s always a rather unfortunate part of my job to have meetings like this,” Stan says to me. “We’re all about ‘rising up’ around here.”

I seriously want to throw up. He’s using part of the marketing and sales copy for kids in this meeting. “Rise up with Dandee Donuts every morning at nine on the Sprout Channel!” Sometimes I hear that commercial in my sleep as I’m paddling down a jelly-filled river on my Long John.

Really, he’s being merciful. This is like the guy coming up to the dying soldier and putting a bullet in his head.

“I spoke with Cynthia and I know she’s informed you about our change of direction.”

“I understand,” I say.

It’s strange, really.

I’ve got a stack of bills on my counter in the kitchen. And when I say stack, I mean a literal stack that can fall and decorate half the floor below. I’m behind in payments for a variety of reasons. I’m still getting paid, but this job hasn’t paid the way I thought it would. My father’s medical bills are really adding up, thanks to his awful insurance. And, well . . . the good old royalty checks haven’t come in lately.

For a second I think of Dad, and what he might have said years ago when his mind was all there and he tried convincing me this music thing wasn’t ever going to work.

Now it’s time to settle down and get a job and act like a grown-up.

In many ways, I wish he could say those very things now. It would mean the man I grew up loving to hate was still around. The figure sitting in that reclining chair in our old house—that’s not my father.

“You really have written some great songs.”

I bet nobody ever said that to Paul McCartney or Bruce Springsteen in that particular type of tone. Like someone sipping a soda and saying, “This is really amazing soda” in a monotone and lifeless way.

This is strange because I find it refreshing. I want to start singing myself, even though it’s been years since I finally accepted the fact that I’m not a very good singer.

“My kids still know all the lines to ‘Bizarre Love Sprinkle’.”

Trying to acquire the rights to do that song had been a nightmare, but coming up with lyrics for doughnuts arguing over what kind of sprinkles they wanted on top of New Order’s “Bizarre Love Triangle” took perhaps fifteen minutes and a bottle of wine.

“I can only take half credit for that one,” I say.

“It’s just that—I know that Cynthia and you haven’t been seeing eye-to-eye lately.”

I smile. “Yeah.”

“She told me about the argument in front of everybody.”

I nod. “Yeah.”

The meeting where I called her an absolute idiot and then proceeded to call her a few more things. This, of course, was after she rejected one of my songs by letting others make up her mind and convince her it didn’t work.

It’s a bit dark, someone said.

It’s kinda sad, someone else said.

Doughnuts aren’t sad, Cynthia said.

No, doughnuts are happy, someone else agreed.

I swear, if I have one more conversation about doughnuts, I’m going to go insane. I don’t ever want to see another doughnut in my life.

“Do you have anything to say?” Stan the Terminal Man asked.

“Do you like what you do?”

The question came out of my mouth before I could stop it.

“Of course.”

“No, I’m not asking whether you like being employed, or the fact that you have insurance and you get a check every other week. I’m not talking about how much you get paid and what you do and don’t do and how many days you take off a year. I’m asking, do you like what you do? Did you dream of this when you were a kid?”

“Excuse me?”

Stan’s attitude suddenly seems a bit more serious and stern. Maybe I’ve finally wakened this vampire from his eternal slumber.

“I’m not trying to be a pain in the butt,” I say. “Really. I just want an honest answer.”

“I’ve worked very hard to make this company what it is today, and I’m proud of the work we do. So yes, I love my job and love what it stands for and what we create.”

I think of that news report the other day that said something like half of the population is obese.

That’s what you create from this show. Happy little kids who keep munching, and then one day, they’re fifty years old but the munching hasn’t stopped and they no longer feel so Dandee.

I look him in the eyes, and it appears he’s not lying.

Along with sipping the Kool-Aid, he’s managed to eat the Dandee Donuts as well.

“I think it’s time to just call it a day,” Stan says to me. “Don’t you think?”

He’s talking down to me even though he’s really not that much older than I am.

I nod and stand up and shake that doughy hand again.

I bet he’s got cream filling in his soul.

See, this is the sort of thing that has happened to me. Every thought has a doughnut analogy.

I leave his office and close the door behind me.

I’m thirty-five years old, and the dream is officially over.

BRUCE REMINDS ME of what I really wanted to do later that night as I work my way through a six-pack of cheap beer and listen to Born to Run. This album always reminds me of my youth, when I discovered Springsteen and figured out what I wanted to do. I wanted to do that. I wanted to make soulful songs that stirred the heart and told stories. I wanted to be real. I wanted people to hear the sweat coming off those melodies.

Dad wanted me to be like my older brothers and excel in sports. But I couldn’t throw a football like Philip or hit a baseball like Jeff.

I wanted to follow my dreams, and that’s exactly what I did. Yet those dreams brought me here, to stale-doughnut land.

Yeah, I can hear you, you ghost and you demon and you angel all tied into one.

Casey knows about these dreams. We talked a lot about them. We even made a promise about them once.

I need to tell her. I need to finally tell her I can’t hold up my end of our deal.

Not that she wants to hear from me. Like, ever again. She’s moved on with her life and that’s what I should be doing with mine.

But if this is moving on, then, man, I cannot wait to see what my fortieth birthday holds for me, right, Case?

I’m talking to an imaginary Casey in my mind while I’m drinking bad beer and being reminded of real rock and roll.

I never thought I’d be such an awful failure at thirty-five. I want to say it is what it is, but I hate that saying. It was what it was, but right now, this moment, this very second that I’m thinking of Casey, really hurts.

Call Gary tomorrow and see if he has any kind of answer.

This thought is depressing, since Gary Mains is my manager in Nashville. My quasi-manager, to be honest, since I haven’t sold a song in years. I’ve been waiting for a follow-up call or e-mail from him since I sent him a CD of demo songs a few months ago.

When someone doesn’t call or e-mail after a few months, you know what the answer is.

There comes a point when everybody has to grow up and realize the dream isn’t going to happen. When the silence and the dim light of the room aren’t just a snapshot of your evening, but of your life. When the music doesn’t matter anymore and the words are no longer there. When you realize the world isn’t listening and maybe never listened to begin with.

If it’s really over, I need to tell her. I need to let her know that I broke the promise, that I broke our promise.

It’s been two years since I saw her. That doesn’t matter. I don’t know exactly where she is or what she’s doing, but that doesn’t matter either.

I need to tell her the dream is over. I need to give back a portion of my promise.

Maybe she can find something to do with it.

I’ve held it for long enough and it’s only brought me to this sad, sappy point.

Enough.

I get out a notebook and start writing a letter. I don’t know any other way to get in touch with her. I’d text her if I had her number, but she changed that a long time ago. She’s not a social-network sort of gal, at least judging from the last few hundred times I searched for her on the Internet like a weirdo stalker boy. This is all I can do, this pen-to-paper sort of old-fashioned thing. I know her mother still lives in their house in Asheville, North Carolina. And last I checked, the post office still delivered letters.

After an hour and another Springsteen album and a few more beers, I’ve got a doozy of a letter. I’ve thought about telling her everything, but instead I simply say the following:

Dear Casey:

Are you gonna kiss me or not?

Daniel

I fold it up and find an envelope and seal it. I’ll find the address of her mother tomorrow and will send it out.

This letter says everything I need to say. It says more than I ever could.

This is our history and our story, summed up by seven simple words.

Loved it!

A tale of love lost and rekindled, based on the hit Country song of the same title.

When I found out that Travis Thrasher was working with Thompson Squaure to write Are You Gonna Kiss Me or Not? I just knew that I had to read it! Not only do I absolutely adore the song, but everything I have read by Mr. Thrasher has been amazing. So I had high expectations for this book, and it didn't let me down! I dove right into the story intrigued by the story and how the title would tie into the story. I loved the way that the story moved and shifted back and forth from the past to the present day, and from first person, to third person point of view. Usually both of those things drive me crazy, but with this story it worked, and I loved it.

I sped through this book, turning the pages steadily. I loved the way that Casey and Daniel connected and from the outside they were an unexpected couple, and how the book told their story through the years.

Overall, I throughly enjoyed this book from beginning to finish, it caught my attention from the very beginning. I definitely hope that Mr. Thrasher writes more books based on Country songs in the future!

Daniel and Casey, sittin' on a roof . . .

I know the story is based upon the hit song by Thompson Square, but the name that got to me to pick up this book is Travis Thrasher. Regardless of genre -- and Thrasher has written in several, including suspense, romance, and drama -- I know I'm going to enjoy the story when his name is on the cover.

The story isn't really anything new: Boy notices girl, girl ignores boy, boy and girl realize they have something in common and become friends, they separate and live different lives, but in the end they get back together. It's in the details that the story becomes something special, and that's where Travis Thrasher excels. His ability to strike a chord within the reader is evident through insight and humor, as is evidenced in the following passages from the book:

"Thirty-five years old and so incomplete, like a record collection missing all the B's, like the Beatles and the Bee Gees and the Beach Boys.

"What a travesty that would B." (page 176)

Daniel starts the conversation, "You love me for the dreams in my heart."

"I love you for having dreams to begin with."

"I thought it was for my rock-hard abs."

Are You Gonna Kiss Me or Not? is a fun summer read with likeable characters, humor, heartbreak, and joy. I wholeheartedly recommend this book.

Genuine, Relevant, and Inspiring Book!

"It's music, the thing that drives this world and makes soulless people like you even try to feel. It's the backdrop of our lives and the soundtrack of our hearts."

I really enjoyed this book! I found it to be genuine and relevant and inspiring.

"The first album is one of those Adele wannabes who have suddenly sprouted up on the scene. I'm suspicious and skeptical, but then it only takes two songs until I'm sold. You can't overproduce passion and you can't fake something from the soul. This young lady is heartbroken and singing from a place very few of us can get to in life.
It gives me goose bumps."

The craziest and most amazing thing about it is the way that pretty much every sentence - every line and thought - would make an incredible lyric for a song...

"A song is just another way to speak the truth. Lyrics are just another form of therapy."

Every chapter in the Past was entitled with a song title... I love that! I also love that the Present chapters were not entitled that way...

"That's the beauty of music.
The stories of every pop or country song ever sung are potential and promise. The potential of finding that special someone. The promise that tomorrow will no longer be as lonely as today. The songs lift you up and make you brave as you go out into the dark night in search of love and belonging. Then the songs comfort you as you come back home alone and tired."

"I want to believe in a simple melody complex enough to move the masses. I want to strive for a simple chorus memorable enough to be sung in the stadiums. A love song that makes up for those long nights and those lost days. A lovely song filling in the grays with blues and making the melancholy go away."

I'll admit it... I didn't like Casey, and I'm not sorry either, but I guess she finally figured it out...

"Just like that, she wasn't hiding anymore. She was in the middle of the field. She had the ball again and she was starting to move toward the goal line.
But what's a touchdown look like?
Casey didn't want to answer that, not yet. She simply wanted an easy and carefree first down. That would be it.
The men in her life would've been so proud of her for thinking in football-talk."

I'm now completely inspired to write a song, and even somewhat confident that I actually could!

Tools for a full life

Bear Grylls is, to me, one of those truly inspiring people who through his own experiences has the abilty to share great knowledge with us all and help us acheive fullness in our own lives. His writing style in this book is no-nonsense and to the point. Through his time as an SAS soldier and to his Everest expeditions, Bear gives the reader valuable tools that can be applied to all scenarios in life. Much may seem common sense, though there wasn't a page in this book where I didn't find something to add to my own toolkit and perspective. I will certainly give this a second read and recommend it to everyone.

Simple reminders and Straightforward honesty

I didn't know a whole lot about Bear Grylls when I accepted this book for review. I'd never seen one of his television programs. I just saw this cover, had a vague notion of who he is and knew that this was a review book that I couldn't turn down. And how glad I am that I didn't.

I'll be honest, there's really nothing new here aside from the personal bits thrown in about Bear's life and experience - which I absolutely loved by the way. He's not reinvented the wheel or come up with any new Earth shattering revelations, but still he manages to remind, motivate and inspire. Most of what he tells us is all common sense...things we've learned and relearned and yet still somehow manage to forget when we get caught up in the rat race that is life. I for one liked the simple reminders and the straightforward honesty I found in A Survival Guide For Life and I'll keep my eye out and tune in to the next Bear Grylls television program I come across.

This is the perfect book to be read at the reader's pleasure either in bits and pieces, snippets here and there as one feels the desire and motivation...or all in one sitting as it's light enough to be easily digested and filling enough to be completely satisfying.

excellent life book

I absolutely love this book, great life advice and guidance, I am ready to buy copies for all the young people I know as I think so often no one talks about this (life values and advice). I also find that this is thought provoking for myself ("an empty nester") who is thinking about creating new dreams for myself. As an employer I find what he says is true, I want the enthusiastic employee! I have the audio book, asked my daughter to listen for 5 minutes, she sat for over 1/2 hour listening, and as I drove her to the airport discussed what she had heard on the audiobook and how it applied to her own life now, her goals and dreams and she is the one who initiated the conversation. That makes the book worth it's weight in gold alone. Anyway, I would encourage people to check it out!

PRECIOUS. The word can have two meanings. Rare, valuable, exquisite -- or just too self-consciously arty for its own good. The trouble is that both meanings can apply to this book, and it entirely depends on your taste whether you treasure it or dismiss it. So let me try to keep my own mood out of this for as long as possible, and look at the book objectively: first the facts, then the arguments pro and con.

A North Korean soldier named Yohan is released from the POW camp, where he had stayed on after the end of hostilities doing various odd chores. Electing not to return to the North, he is sent by the UN to an unnamed Brazilian port city where he becomes the apprentice to a Japanese tailor called Kiyoshi. At first, he feels lost so far from home, but the tailor is kind and he soon finds himself taking more responsibility in the business and making friends in the community, especially an older groundskeeper named Peixe, and two children, a girl and boy named Bia and Santi. Indeed, one of his most treasured possessions is an old blue umbrella given him by Bia when he first lands. By the time the book ends a decade later, he will feel "he had made a life; he had entered the future."

PRO. First and foremost, Yoon writes beautifully. It is the kind of book that gets hailed as prose-poetry, filled with simple but lovely word pictures. More importantly, Yoon has the ability to segue from a physical description to its interior meaning. So for example, he describes a juggler, blindfolded for show, but really blind underneath, practising with children's shoes to the delight of the kids. But then he imagines him going home at the end of the day and removing his blindfold: "He rubs his eyes, squints from the light. I imagine this for him. In my dreams, he takes all of us by the waist and throws us into the air. He lifts his arms and we rise. He watches us. And it is beautiful."

CON. This is clearly written and marketed, not as a normal novel, but as something exquisite. Its short length, square-page format, and artistic design combine with the poetic quality of the writing to make something self-consciously beautiful. Poesy rather than poetry. Perhaps it is the cynic in me, but I feel that is am being flattered for my aesthetic discernment in appreciating it, just as THE ELEGANCE OF THE HEDGEHOG is designed to flatter its readers as intellectuals. There is a deliberate vagueness to the writing, especially as to place and the passing of time, that is part of the poetic miasma, but it has the downside of not making anything quite real. There are flashbacks, for example, to the horrors of war and captivity, but they have little bite. There are moments of joy also, but few of them come convincingly into focus. As a result, while the general arc of the book is clear, it lacks defining events and there seems little real reason why it ends where it does.

AND YET, one thing that Yoon does quite well is to capture the peculiar mental situation of the displaced person; even as a voluntary emigrant, I can recognize this. Looking back on his past life, Yohan "thought of these years as another life within the one he had. As though it were a thing he was able to carry. A small box. A handkerchief. A stone. He did not understand how a life could vanish." And although the watercolor washes of Yoon's prose makes it difficult to grasp the hereness and nowness of any particular moment, they do have the great advantage of making all Yohan's various lives flow together. There are many times in the later parts of the book when you lose track of whether you are reading about Yohan's life in Brazil, his wartime experiences, or his childhood in Korea. Not only these time periods but to a certain extent also the lives of the other characters, Kiyoshi, Peixe, Bia and Santi, are linked together by images and parallel experiences in a way that would be quite impossible with more literal writing.

SO... what kind of picture do you want? A poetic watercolor, a substantial oil painting, or an engraved map? If the first of these, Paul Yoon's book will seem a miniature marvel. It is not my preference, and were I rating simply on the basis of personal liking, I would give it only three stars. But for what it sets out to do, and for the right reader, how can I deny five?

Minimalistic And Yet Expansive

There is not one spare word in Paul Yoon's Snow Hunters, a 192-page reverie to what it means to start a new life after traumatic loss and displacement. Written in a minimalistic style, the writing style might be described as "ala prima" - quickly sketching the scenario with rapid and broad brushstrokes, at the same time creating lines to establish the form.

The story centers loosely around Yohan, a solitary man who chooses to restart life on the coast of Brazil rather than submit to repatriation at the end of the Korean War. There, he works for a tailor named Kiyoshi, who symbolically, creates new clothes for him, one each year. The others - Peixe, the groundskeeper at the two church and two orphaned children named Santi and Bia - represent his entire world.

Hidden in this simplicity are some complex and poignant revelations: "He thought of these years as another life within the one he had. As though it were a thing he was able to carry. A small box. A handkerchief. A stone. He did not understand how a life could vanish. How that was even possible." Much as he wants to connect, he cannot.

He is unable to mine his inner life or embrace the one that is in front of him. As Mr. Yoon writes, "He understood that he would never be able to hold all the years that had gone in their entirety. That those years would begin to loosen, break apart, slip away. That there would come a time when there was just a corner, a window, a smell, a gesture, a voice to gather and assemble."

Here is where the book rating system gets challenging. Does Paul Yoon succeed in elegantly creating a meditation to second chances, a poetic and lucid ode to shedding one's old skin and moving quietly and steadfastly to connection and joy? Yes he does. This is a confident author who is in control of his material.

But did I find it particularly satisfying? Aye, there's the question...and it's a question that will no doubt be answered differently by each reader. I felt curiously distanced and disconnected; I admired, rather than loved. While I appreciated and understood what Paul Yoon was doing, I was seeking a more visceral interaction with Yohan that eluded me. In short, I wanted more. But that's just me. 5 stars for execution, yet only 3 stars for my personal reading experience -- which results in my 4 star rating.

A quiet observation...

Beautifully told, this is a quiet story about a young North Korean man, Yohan,who after being caught by the Americans during the Korean war and held as a prisoner of war in a camp for 3years, is eventually released and sent to a coastal town in Brazil to start a new life. Here, he is to be an apprentice of a Japanese tailor, Kiyoshi. The story is mainly told through a wonderfully descriptive and at times lyrical prose, where we see Yohan's life past and present mainly through his memories, observations, feelings and descriptions of people he knows and meets. It is amazing how much one can visualize from a few written words. Every now and again A character will enter to be a meaningful piece of his story, from a childhood friend, who was also in the camp with him, to his father and more currently the tailor, Kiyoshi, Peixe, the groundskeeper at the town church, and two vagrant children Santi and Bia, all teaching him something that helps him in his life.
At the end of the book, we are presented with and interview by the NY Times with the author and a piece that really stuck with me was when asked if if the other books he had been reading influenced him in the writing of this story, he states: " I do think there is a part of me that wrote Snow Hunters as a response to the many books I was reading at that time. In my childhood imagination I always have a selfish fantasy that a book I adore is a letter written to me. And so I write one back. And eventually all of them find one another somewhere in some dead letter office and exist together happily, privately, forever."

DANIEL BOONE'S AUTOBIOGRAPHY

If you like first hand accounts of real adventures, you will love this. Boone writes surprisingly well for someone of not much education, and you get to experience first hand the discover of the Kentucky wilderness. The biography which follows helps fill in the rest of his life and some missing details.

I was a little disappointed that this book was so small. I was hoping their would be more detail in about Danial Boone; especially since he wrote the story. I would recommend this book to children around the age of 12.

Waste of Time and Money

What a miserable waste of paper. Terribly written story with totally unsympathetic, unlikeable characters and a shabby plot makes this one miserable book. I should have stopped reading after the first chapter but silly me, I kept thinking it would get better. Nope, it just got worse, the characters became even more unlikeable, and the ending was ridiculous. Too bad I had to leave one star. It didn't deserve it.

Even better than their other books

I devoured this book. I could not put my Kindle down and stayed up late to treasure this one. (And that's a sacrifice for me since sleep is limited lately) Just like their previous novel, Between You and Menofollow, and their first big hit, The Nanny Diariesnofollow, I was absorbed from the first chapter and sad when the book was over. If you were a bit young when the Clinton/Lewinsky scandal was big news, consider this book your refresher into the affair as it seems to resemble the events that happened 15 (!) years ago.

The authors excel at showing how and why Gregory Rutland would be able to rise up to become President of the United States. I have to admit that as I read this, I pictured the President as Jason Sudeikis as he appeared portraying Mitt Romney on SNL last year. This character seemed to be that wise-cracking and charming but somewhat slick guy that many woman would find attractive. I was also strongly reminded of Bill Clinton. For my fellow fans of The Family Guy, I was also reminded of the episode where Lois has an affair with Clinton and she can't really explain why or how it happened. Jamie seems to be quickly enveloped into something that is far out of her control and she's left bewildered and confused after the whirlwind has passed.

The only point of contention I have with this book is that while there is barely a glance passed between the couple, the affair has begun. I wonder if Jamie had not been sent to his office and seen him in the midst of a panic attack if anything would have happened. Was he faking this panic attack to seem more vulnerable? The whole beginning of the affair seems somewhat fast and muddled to me, but again maybe that just lends to the blurry speed with which everything occurs.

Another point arises in this novel that I'd like to point out. We seldom think about the families of the big names in scandals, news and the tabloids. However, this book shows that the families, though they may know nothing about what is going on, is just as under scrutiny and attack as the major players. It was sad that Jamie's family had to suffer because of her actions.

I don't want to say too much but the end of the book was sad yet confusing to me. I don't know that I would have felt and acted like Jamie did. I guess it speaks for the growth that Jamie undergoes through the whole situation. If you do wind up reading this book, I'd love to hear about what you thought about the ending.

The First Affair would have been perfect for the short vacation that I am about to take. If you've got a weekend of relaxing ahead (Labor Day weekend?), be sure to nab this book. You will be done with it quickly but may wind up neglecting your family just to see what happens next.

Jamie just graduated from Vassar, several thousand dollars in debt (thanks student loans!) with no job prospects (thanks government!). She luckily landed an internship at the White House, which will at least look good on her resume.

She's not well liked by her fellow interns, and her best friend is across the country. She's lonely. She has no real plan besides possibly moving back home to live with mom and dad.

During a government furlough, the interns are forced to work double time and closer to the President. During a routine run to have paperwork dropped off, Jaime accidentally runs into the President while he's having a panic attack. Having experienced panic attacks herself, she knows how to calm him down, so she does what any nice American citizen would do, and she helps him.

And he kisses her as a thank you.

Which leads to (I'm sure you can guess what it leads to, y'all are smart) an AFFAIR. The President is THE PRESIDENT. Can you turn him down? Not like Jamie wants to exactly, because she just wants someone to love her.

Jamie has a dysfunctional family. Her dad is an alcoholic; her sister is kinda mean and an alcoholic. Her mother is just...there. She grew up feeling kind of unloved and like she was second fiddle to her dad and sister's issues. That's not really an excuse for having an affair with a married man but it's her reasoning.

Anyways, her first mistake is having an affair with a married President. Her second is telling so many people about it. (She tells three, THREE!). Also, he promises her a job but not really and she gets screwed and placed in another unpaid internship because The President's adviser has gotten suspicious and wants her out of the White House.

They never actually have sex but engage in sex acts (and there are a couple Monica Lewinsky-ish things that happen with a coat and a shaving brush. If you don't know who that is, google her).

Eventually it all comes crashing down around her during the Presidents trial about him another woman. Her "friends" basically set her up or abandoned her. And I don't think I'm spoiling here because exactly how do you think a book about an affair with a married President is going to end?

I actually really liked this book. I hate cheating, I hate when cheating is justified in a book, and I really hate when the other woman knows about the wife. But there are no excuses in this book. There are very serious consequences for everyone's actions.

Jaime is a very unsure, naïve girl. She just wants someone to pay attention to her and love her. Granted, she chose the wrong person but we all make mistakes, right? She actually fantasizes about becoming the FLOTUS but doesn't really wish the President's wife out of the picture because she would hate to see her hurt. Jaime thinks about how what they've done will affect the children. Once you figure out her back story you can kind of see why she would both make such a terrible decision involving a married man. She comes to something of a realization.

And of course Jaime also gets totally effed over; by the President, her supposed friends, the media, ex-boyfriends. So does anyone that's ever had any connection to her.

Jaime pays for her mistake with her future; such is life for a woman though. The President still gets to be President and Jaime gets labeled a whore. That is commented on.

I really enjoyed this book. I recommend! (Unless cheating is a GGGRRRR thing for you that sends you into a rage. Then maybe skip it.)
