Great basic examination of engraving

We have a Jewelry shop - [...] is one of our sites - we have found this book to be a great basic handbook and reference. It is a good guide on tools and their care. The only comprehensive reference I have found on sharpening gravers. I am a jeweler. My husband is the engraver. I keep a copy by my bench too. Engraving makes each item personal and must be done with skill + care. The book is a big help.

An old, but good book on hand engraving

Hand engraving is almost a lost art in these days of PowerGravers, but this book shows you how to do it and gives some useful advice even for power engravers.

For one thing, Hardy starts where engraving starts -- with sharpening the graver. This is an art in itself and a metal engraver spends about half his time sharpening or honing. The advice here is mostly applicable to power engraving as well.

Then the author leads you through a series of basic exercises and on to more advanced cutting. All good stuff.

Excellent French Revolution Literature

In this book I was pleasantly surprised. Although our family enjoyed The Cat of Bubastes by Henty on audio some years ago, I had heard some mixed reviews on the 3-4 other Henty novels the boys read (Granted, one of them enjoyed history more than the other.). The verbage and style are a little older, due to the fact that many of Hentys' novels were written over a 100 years ago. With this in mind I prefer them for ages 10-12 and up. The sentence structures in In The Reign of Terror often reminded me of a Jane Austen novel.

I can highly recommend this book with the addition of a dictionary. There is no glossary for French terms such as Tocsin, which nearly every reader would have known at the time the book was originally published in 1888. Many readers should seek clarification of terms such as these.

Because of the subject matter and descriptive (but not overly so) passages about the Reign of Terror I recommend this for GRADES 9 or 10 and up, preferably grades 10-12.

Great family read aloud, great historical fiction

Henty's books are never a disappointment. My [...] son and [...] daughter loved this and couldn't wait to read it every evening. "Read another chapter Mom" is music to my ears. I learned a perspective of the French Revolution I'd never thought much of - the royalists'. The character of Robespierre was well portrayed.

You will enjoy this book!

You are going to love this book, whether you are a pre-teen/teen boy or a grandmother, or anyone in-between. You will have the opportunity to have a "bird's-eye" view of the French Revolution.

This is my first Henty book. I am a young grandmother, and I enjoyed this so much I then purchased antoerh of Henty's books, "Wulf, the Saxon, a Story of the Norman Invasion", another excellent choice. Each gives one a feeling of "being there" as history unfolds. The characters are believable in the old-school way and make one understand parts of history from a far more interesting angle than some dusty old textbooks! I can't wait to acquire more Henty books; he does not disappoint. By reading Henty on the Kindle, I can tap a word I am unfamiliar with, see its definition, and quickly move on with the story without missing too much of a beat. As a retired homeschool parent, I see opportunities throughout the text to strengthen vocabulary, discuss the causes and effects of happenings in history, and draw parallels to our current generation. I was very surprised to see quite of bit of 21st Century America thinking in the middle of 18th Century Revolutionary France; it did not set well with me...

Believable characters and plausible storyline from a ronantic girl's perspective! Yes, I would recommend this book, to boys AND girls, and even their adult counterparts. Enjoy!

An American in Europe

As I read Henry James' novella "Daisy Miller," I found myself reminded of Anthony Minghella's film "The Talented Mr. Ripley," starring Matt Damon. Both the novella and the film tell the stories of Americans living luxurious lives in Europe. Both stories also deal with the issue of social unacceptability, and are haunted by the aura of sexual transgression.
James' novella was first published in 1878, making it an early work in the author's illustrious literary career. "Daisy" opens in Switzerland, where Winterbourne, a young American man, meets the title character. An American girl who is described as "an extraordinary mixture of innocence and crudity," Daisy becomes a troublesome figure for the snobby community of Americans abroad.
Some of James' social satire strikes me as rather dated, and I found the conclusion of the tale somewhat unsatisfying. Still, "Daisy" is a well-written tale that, on the whole, remains a good read today. And Daisy herself is a curiously compelling character whose story invites both a serious feminist analysis, as well as an analysis based in economic and class issues. Recommended as a companion text: "Strange Pilgrims," Gabriel Garcia Marquez' collection of stories about Latin Americans in Europe for various reasons.

Daisy Miller - A Lesson in Observation

Henry James, one of America's foremost authors in the late 1800s and early 1900s, is primarily remembered and respected for his vivid portrayals of Americans abroad and their encounters with the cultural differences that divided the brash, young, immature American continent from the sophisticated, class conscious Old World. This novella, Daisy Miller (1878), was his first literary success.

From the moment we meet Daisy Miller she is enigmatic, either the epitome of incautious innocence or reckless to the extreme. She disregards European customs, quite assured in her own judgment that she is doing no wrong, only flirting with young gentlemen as would any American girl. As the story progresses, aware of building criticism from the expatriate community, Daisy still chooses to ignore advice from well-meaning, socially prominent women.

We need to recognize that we see Daisy not from the perspective of an omniscient author that is privy to Daisy's innermost thoughts, but through the eyes of a third person, a Mr. Winterbourne, an American bachelor living in Geneva. Winterbourne is obviously attracted to and fascinated by this young, confident, perhaps audacious, visitor from America. Winterbourne's assessment of Daisy Miller is more sympathetic, more balanced, and more reliable than that of the snobbish Mrs. Costello in Vevay in Switzerland and Mrs. Walker in Rome. Or, so I thought upon my first reading.

In his first meeting with Daisy in a hotel garden Winterbourne is both charmed and puzzled by her conversation, and reflects to himself: "He felt that he had lived at Geneva so long that he had lost a good deal; he had become dishabituated to the American tone."

In retrospect I have come to realize that Henry James was cautioning his readers that Mr. Winterbourne's observations and assessments may not be entirely reliable and accurate. This theme recurs throughout this short story, often in different forms and in different contexts, and is the source of much of the fascination of this tale.

Daisy Miller's most egregious behavior revolves around a growing friendship with a Mr. Giovanelli, a not too successful Italian lawyer, that is characterized by others as little more than an imitation gentleman. But to Daisy, Mr. Giovanelli is urbane, charming, and sincere in his friendship. However, we see that her continual disregard of social conventions, such as taking walks with Mr. Giovanelli without a chaperone, evens forces Mr. Winterbourne to question whether he himself is too lenient in his attitude toward Daisy.

The abrupt ending leaves the reader with ambiguity. Winterbourne's loss has a vagueness; he never quite understood Daisy. Contrastingly, the reader - with the assistance of the artistry of Henry James - will likely have a better appreciation of Daisy's true qualities and see what Winterbourne failed to recognize.

"Daisy Miller" is Henry James 1883 best-seller, a short but well-written novelette about the adventures of a young American woman in Europe. Miss Daisy Miller is a free spirit in an age thoroughly bound up in strict manners, at least for the upper class. She comes and goes more or less as she pleases, with whom she pleases. The story is told by a Mr. Winterbourne, a young American ex-patriate who takes an interest in Daisy but finds her behavior confusing and challenging. They meet in a small resort town in Switzerland; Winterbourne will follow her to Rome in hopes of becoming better acquainted. Daisy will on going her own way, a way on which tragedy lies, along with unfulfilled hopes. Recommended to fans of Henry James as a short but fascinating read.

About the Author

Deirdre David is Professor Emerita of English at Temple University. Throughout her long career she has taught courses in Victorian literature, the history of the British novel, and women's writing. She has published books dealing with social problems in the Victorian novel (Fictions of Resolution in Three Victorian Novels), the conflicted position of the woman intellectual in Victorian culture (Intellectual Women and Victorian Patriarchy), and the importance of British women in imperialism (Rule Britannia: Women, Empire, and Victorian Writing). She also edited The Cambridge Companion to the Victorian Novel, and co-edited Contemporary Dickens. She published her first biography in 2007, Fanny Kemble: A Performed Life, and continues to teach as a member of the Society of Senior Scholars at Columbia University.

A Woman at War in the world and at home

Deirdre David's Olivia Manning: A Woman at War, is compelling on every page, whether the scene is lower-class Portsmouth where Manning was born; Bucharest, where Manning encountered the Nazis and the "world" that would become central to her fiction; Cairo; the Middle East; London, where Manning lived her writing life--all of these locales allow David to explore a deeply complex woman whose work, she shows tellingly through superb analyses, has been wrongly neglected. David's well-nigh novelistic sense of the particularities of character, time, and place allow her to do full justice to an writer who resented her Portsmouth background almost as much as she loved the London that became her home from the 1930s onward and where she worked at her writing well-nigh daily. This biography is generously illustrated (the cover is a self-portrait that Manning painted around 1930). The illustrations remind us of the large circle of women writers around Manning, many of whom she envied for their greater critical and commercial success. David, whose biography Fanny Kemble: A Performed Life, is equally rich in scene and characters, has an engaging, probing narrative style that indicates at once her sympathy, indeed admiration, for her subject even as it refuses to cover over Manning's sometimes ugly attitudes and jealousies. Manning is a complicated woman and a superb writer (The Balkan Trilogy) who deserves Deirdre David as her biographer.

Sympathetic and sensitive biography

In this sympathetic and sensitive biography Olivia Manning emerges as a hardworking, disciplined and ambitious writer who is nevertheless plagued by uncertainties, sensitive to exclusion, prickly in temperament, given to much complaining--(David reveals that some of her friends called her "Olivia Moaning.") The "War" in the title of David's book refers not only to the war Manning lived through and wrote about, but the war she waged against publishers, reviewers and prize givers, friends and foes who she felt didn't appreciate her work and didn't accord her the stature she deserved. Not to speak of the war she waged against her own provincial background which she always felt as a stigma. David puts flesh on the bones of this author who wove together autobiography, history and fiction, battled on her own behalf day after day, was a champion of animals and the environment, a savy financial planner and supporter of her husband, and most of all a superb writer who kept at it right up until the end.

Olivia Manning should be better known in the US

This well-researched and beautifully written biography of the prominent English writer Olivia Manning underlines the lack of attention to Manning's prolific writings, among them the two great WWII series, "The Balkan Trilogy" and "The Levant Trilogy." Deidre David rightly emphasizes her significance as a woman at war on many fronts: a non- University graduate who sought to establish herself as a serious writer in the post- WWII period; a woman writing non-sentimentally about war and politics; a non-traditional feminist who fought to be recognized as a "writer," not a woman writer.
David sets Manning's biography in the historical context of pre- and post-war Britain, adding her own biographical insight as a wartime Brit as well as critical literary commentary on Manning's writings. What better! A new discovery for many dedicated readers.
