Taxicab Geometry: An Adventure in Non-Euclidean Geometry (Dover Books on Mathematics), by Eugene F. Krause

This entertaining, stimulating textbook offers anyone familiar with Euclidean geometry — undergraduate math students, advanced high school students, and puzzle fans of any age — an opportunity to explore taxicab geometry, a simple, non-Euclidean system that helps put Euclidean geometry in sharper perspective.
In taxicab geometry, the shortest distance between two points is not a straight line. Distance is not measured as the crow flies, but as a taxicab travels the "grid" of the city street, from block to block, vertically and horizontally, until the destination is reached. Because of this non-Euclidean method of measuring distance, some familiar geometric figures are transmitted: for example, circles become squares.
However, taxicab geometry has important practical applications. As Professor Krause points out, "While Euclidean geometry appears to be a good model of the 'natural' world, taxicab geometry is a better model of the artificial urban world that man has built."
As a result, the book is replete with practical applications of this non-Euclidean system to urban geometry and urban planning — from deciding the optimum location for a factory or a phone booth, to determining the most efficient routes for a mass transit system.
The underlying emphasis throughout this unique, challenging textbook is on how mathematicians think, and how they apply an apparently theoretical system to the solution of real-world problems.

Excellent for high school teachers and students
By dfromchicago
I use the ideas in this book in my mathematics teaching in high school. Students learn to think of the world as Euclidean through most of their instruction; Taxicab Geoemetry gives teachers a very straghtforward way to introduce non-Eucliean Geometry. Admittedly, this book is not thorough, and it is very open ended (which I consider to be positive). Nevertheless, for its intended audience it is outstanding.

Excellent for what it is
By Robert Street
Before purchasing this book, realize what it is. This is a book about non-euclidean geometry. Specifically, a specialized form of non-euclidian geometry affectionately referred to as taxi-cab geometry. This is not a table top book, but is a book for mathemeticians and those interested in mathematics. Others need not apply (regardless of how interesting the topic is). This is an excellent introduction to non-euclidean geometry because it strips away common misconceptions about the nature of non-euclidean geometries. This text is excellent for grade school children and those who would like to branch into more advanced non-euclidean geometries like hyperbolic.

Fun little book!
By Mike W.
The book is only $6.00 and it describes a non-euclidean geometry - it's hard to go wrong! This is really more of a workshop book - the math that's in it is pretty darn simple, yet, it encourages a certain mathematical exploration. So, if you're getting burned out on Calculus and the other heavy stuff, pick this gem up (Did I mention it's only $6.00?) and do what the original mathematicians did: Play with math.

My only problem with the book, is that some of the chapters could use some more detail - on the other hand, it does encourage the reader to think a bit more deeply about what's being presented.

Ubu Roi (Dover Thrift Editions), by Alfred Jarry

When it first opened in Paris in late 1896, Ubu Roi immediately outraged audiences with its scatological references and surrealist style. Spectators rioted during the premiere (and final) performance and unrelenting controversy over the play's meaning followed. The quality and stunning impact of the work, however, was never questioned.
Early drafts of the play were written by Jarry in his teens to ridicule one of his teachers. The farce was done in the form of stylized burlesque, satirizing the tendency of the successful bourgeois to abuse his authority and become irresponsibly complacent. Ubu — the cruel, gluttonous, and grotesque main character (the author's metaphor for modern man) — anticipated characteristics of the Dada movement. In the 1920s, Dadaists and Surrealists championed the play, recognizing Ubu Roi as the first absurdist drama.

Roll over Dover
By Peter T. Schwenger
Silvermom's review of Ubu Roi on this site is misleading. It refers to the New Directions edition of the play, now unfortunately out of print. The Dover edition does not have the delightful line drawings, nor the added essays on theatre by Jarry. Also, I don't much care for Dover's gratuitous (and inaccurate) translation of "Ubu Roi" as "King Turd." On the other hand, as far as English translations go, Dover's is pretty much the only game in town. And Jarry's game is wonderfully worth playing, full of rambunctious anarchic high spirits. Just so you have a better idea of what you'll actually be getting.

A turd of a translation.
By Alan H. Ware
Not the greatest translation of Jarry's masterpiece.

As a Dover thrift edition, it is thrifty and cheap. . . you get what you pay for.

I would recommend the Cyril Connelly/Simon Watson Taylor version in it's place.

strange tale
By Michell Nzoiwu
Perhaps I just didn't understand it, but this was a rather strange play. I didn't really understand the point of all the escapades, and the jargon and spelling was so unfamiliar. Just strange.

I Wear the Black Hat: Grappling with Villains (Real and Imagined), by Chuck Klosterman

One-of-a-kind cultural critic and New York Times bestselling author Chuck Klosterman “offers up great facts, interesting cultural insights, and thought-provoking moral calculations in this look at our love affair with the anti-hero” (New York magazine).

Chuck Klosterman, “The Ethicist” for The New York Times Magazine, has walked into the darkness. In I Wear the Black Hat, he questions the modern understanding of villainy. When we classify someone as a bad person, what are we really saying, and why are we so obsessed with saying it? How does the culture of malevolence operate? What was so Machiavellian about Machiavelli? Why don’t we see Bernhard Goetz the same way we see Batman? Who is more worthy of our vitriol—Bill Clinton or Don Henley? What was O.J. Simpson’s second-worst decision? And why is Klosterman still haunted by some kid he knew for one week in 1985?

Masterfully blending cultural analysis with self-interrogation and imaginative hypotheticals, I Wear the Black Hat delivers perceptive observations on the complexity of the antihero (seemingly the only kind of hero America still creates). As the Los Angeles Times notes: “By underscoring the contradictory, often knee-jerk ways we encounter the heroes and villains of our culture, Klosterman illustrates the passionate but incomplete computations that have come to define American culture—and maybe even American morality.” I Wear the Black Hat is a rare example of serious criticism that’s instantly accessible and really, really funny.

Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of the Month, July 2013: Name one writer who could drop Eazy-E, Hitler, and Linda Tripp into the same conversation and spark neither rage nor derision. I count Chuck Klosterman and maybe no one else. But that's what his new collection does: I Wear the Black Hat examines "villains" of all stripes and scale, as well as our varied (and often counterintuitive) reactions to them. For example: If Batman were real, would he be any less reviled than Bernhard Goetz, the 1980s NYC subway vigilante? (Probably not--he'd be a scary freak.) Why would D.B. Cooper, a hijacker who parachuted into the night sky over Washington state with 200 thousand dollars in stolen money, become a legend and a folk hero? (Because he seemed smooth and he wore a suit.) Is Don Henley evil? (That’s a personal decision.) The subject is serious--at first blush there’s nothing funny about murderers, tyrants, and Al Davis--but Klosterman's pop culture sensibilities and skewed vistas offer interesting angles into what makes some bad guys bad and other bad guys good, while his deceivingly lightweight style keeps things brisk and entertaining. Instead of getting mad at what might seem glib or impertinent, you admire the audacity of the observation and wish that you’d thought of this yourself (or at least that you had written it down). The question of who could do this might be irrelevant; how many would even try? --Jon Foro Guest Review of I Wear the Black Hat

By Rob Sheffield

Nobody investigates American culture with the ferocity of Chuck Klosterman. It’s impossible to imagine any writer who even could have invented Klosterman as a fictional character, because no other writer can come close to matching his ear for the way Americans love to argue. I Wear the Black Hat is his study of villains, ripping into moral questions with the same fervor he brings to any other topic. Who else loves an argument this passionately? And what could be more American than loving an argument? Reading I Wear The Black Hat is like wandering into a saloon, taking the barstool next to Ralph Waldo Emerson, and getting sucked into a marathon philosophical debate over Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s cameo in Airplane!

Black Hat is his most wide-ranging, provocative, unhinged and hilariously contentious book yet. In “The Ethicist,” the column he writes for the New York Times, Klosterman addresses his readers’ everyday moral dilemmas, but here he branches into broader questions of good and evil. What is a villain? What makes a villain different from a bad guy, a crook, an antihero? Why does the Dude hate the Eagles? Why do kids relate to Luke Skywalker while their parents prefer Darth Vader?

It’s a rogue’s gallery of villains, ingeniously paced to keep you guessing who’s coming up next. Some of these villains are historical figures, like Machiavelli or Stalin. Others are modern legends, like the 1970s skyjacker D.B. Cooper. Some are totally fictional, like the mustache-twirling cartoon Snidely Whiplash. And one is Hitler, just because people kept disagreeing about whether he should include a Hitler chapter. He digs into the tangled ethical legacies of Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier, Jimmy Page and Aleister Crowley, Batman and Bernhard Goetz, N.W.A. and the Oakland Raiders. He also notes how President Obama has called Omar his favorite character on The Wire, “thus making Obama the first sitting president to express admiration for a fictional homosexual who killed dozens of people with a shotgun.”

As always, Klosterman mixes cerebral quibbles with his own crackpot junk-culture erudition, like some kind of demon spawn sired by Schopenhauer and C. C. DeVille. He always finds a way to cast some new light on artifacts that are hidden in plain sight. For instance, most people have heard of The Starr Report, and have a vague sense of its historical impact. But who has actually read it lately? Who remembers details like the way Monica Lewinsky gave Bill Clinton a souvenir mug from Santa Monica? Or O.J. Simpson’s 2007 book If I Did It, his hypothetical memoir of how he would have murdered his victims? “The existence of this book is deeply, vastly, hysterically underrated,” Klosterman notes. “I want to write something along the lines of ‘If I Did It is as bizarre as ---,’ but no cultural minutia fits in that space. Roman Polanski would have to make a biopic about Charles Manson’s music career.”

All over Black Hat, Klosterman brings a little sympathy for the devil, which is essential for a book this ambitious. And he holds it all together with his voracious intellectual curiosity, the emotional intensity of his prose, the compassion of his bad Catholic conscience. As he ruefully admits, in his discussion of Chevy Chase, “I see all of Chevy’s worst qualities in myself. But none of his good ones.”

If he ever came off as moralistic, or a talk-radio blowhard, it would sink the whole project. Yet Klosterman always seems to approach these questions out of genuine curiosity--the man would rather start an argument than settle one, much less win one. He savors the debate for its own sake. That’s what makes his voice so humane, so unmistakable. It’s also what ultimately makes Black Hat his most compelling work. Reading any random page of Black Hat--as with anything Klosterman writes, except more so--you want to argue back at every line, right down to the commas.

From Booklist
With characteristically infuriating insight and wit, Klosterman (The Visible Man, 2011) takes on our fascination—and often, indeed, our identification—with villainy. He covers a lot of territory: the antiheroes he discusses include airplane hijacker D. B. Cooper, subway vigilante Bernhard Goetz, rappers NWA, the Oakland Raiders football team, Bill Clinton, and O. J. Simpson. Very much a product of his generation and as plugged into the popular culture as Mencken was antagonistic to it, Klosterman is in that same direct line of cultural critics as Bierce, Mencken, and more recently, P. J. O’Rourke, and his posture is similarly arch and iconoclastic, if more analytical. He is not for everybody (icons clearly have their supporters), and his targets often seem small, which may say as much about our culture as it does about Klosterman. But this collection of related essays, though uneven—for example, his take on Muhammad Ali is particularly strong, but on Chevy Chase, Howard Cosell, or the Eagles, it is inconsequential—will amuse and/or outrage but, either way, it should enlarge his audience. --Mark Levine

Review
"Highly entertaining." (Parade)

"Intellectually vigorous and entertaining." (Publishers Weekly)

“That most of his subjects are from the pop-culture realm, whether Andrew Dice Clay or Chevy Chase or the Eagles, does not diminish the underlying sophistication of Klosterman’s guiding questions…. A fine return to form for Klosterman, blending Big Ideas with heavy metal, The Wire, Batman and much more.” (Kirkus)

“Very much a product of his generation and as plugged into the popular culture as Mencken was antagonistic to it, Klosterman is in that same direct line of cultural critics as Bierce, Mencken, and more recently, P. "Astute and funny." (USA Today)

"Highly entertaining...a beach classic." (New York Times)

“Klosterman offers up great facts, interesting cultural insights, and thought-provoking moral calculations in this look at our love affair with the anti-hero.” (New York Magazine)

"Masterfully blending cultural analysis with self-interrogation and imaginative hypotheticals, I Wear the Black Hat delivers perceptive observations on the complexity of the antihero (seemingly the only kind of hero America still creates). I Wear the Black Hat is a rare example of serious criticism that’s instantly accessible and really, really funny." (DC Spotlight)

"Klosterman has a knack for holding up a magical high-def mirror to American pop culture that makes all of our vanities and delusions look painfully obvious. Spend enough time reading I Wear the Black Hat, and you might even start to recognize, in its pages, your own silly assumptions, your snap judgments, your stubborn loyalties and your badly rationalized prejudices….By underscoring the contradictory, often knee-jerk ways we encounter the heroes and villains of our culture, Klosterman illustrates the passionate but incomplete computations that have come to define American culture — and maybe even American morality." (Los Angeles Times)

"Klosterman's prose exhibits the same firecrack fizz and pop, and his endearing/unnerving polemical habits remain in place." (Time Out New York)

"A gleeful and often funny explanation of villainy, both fictional and real." (Minneapolis Star-Tribune)

"Klosterman considers how inconsistent, unpredictable and surprisingly elastic the concept of villainy has been in American culture since the 1970s....the entertainment value of his thought processes and the quality of his prose are high." (USA Today)

“With the aplomb of a modern Machiavelli surveying our ever shifting moral landscape for examples that prove his point, Mr. Klosterman takes the reader on a grand tour of villainy's outposts in popular culture, sports, politics and American history. "I Wear the Black Hat" is an erudite, provocative and playful survey of the ever shifting face of villainy in the American experience.” (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)

"Klosterman attacks his subjects with intellectual rigor and humor... you should read this thought-provoking book." (Washington Post)

“[Klosterman’s] best work since Sex, Drugs and Cocoa Puffs….If you’ve ever sympathized with Darth Vader, second-guessed Muhammad Ali or wondered how Bill Clinton got away with what he got away with, you’re not alone. Read I Wear the Black Hat and see for yourself.” (Las Vegas Weekly)

Not worth the time
By Simon
Reading Klosterman's book I found myself thinking about the old adage about opinions, that everyone has one and well you know the rest.

As a new Klosterman reader perhaps I came to the book expecting the wrong thing. I expected a cogent thoughtful treatise on what causes us to identify some people or characters as villanous while giving others the pass. And while Klosterman starts off his first chapter in this direction with a discussion of why Machiavelli is widely reviled, he quickly dissembles into some serious navel gazing.

Klosterman opens his second chapter with an extended discussion of bands he has disliked. I'll admit that I didn't care much about Klosterman's taste in music, however the discussion might have been justified had it fed some larger reasoned conclusion. However, even after re-reading his discussion twice I could not make out exactly what his larger point was. While he wrote in exacting detail about his personal taste he definitely phoned it in when it came to drawing conclusions.

From there Klosterman launched into a discussion of why some mysoginist music from decades passed has come to be thought of as mostly harmless while a similarly sexist comedian is still reviled. Again Klosterman doesn't draw any strongly reasoned conclusions, and it's even the conclusions that he does draw seem suspect given that he offers up no support other than his own opinions and no additional examples beyond the two he has discussed.

And to be honest even though Klosterman was clearly working to paint his sexist comedian as a sympatheitc victim of political correctness, it was difficult to find much to sympathize about a man who made millions calling women dirty names on stage.

And here was the point where Klosterman's book fell apart for me. In the introduction Klosterman states that those who disagree with his conclusions must be unable to appreciate moral complexity. It's a rather subtle case of utilizing the emperor's new clothes reasoning, by implying that those who disagree, just aren't sophisticated enough to grasp the complex nature of the villains he presents. While this might make sense for Machiavelli or Karl Rove, it's hard to imagine that this is really true of 2 Live Crew. I read farther into the book than I might otherwise have for fear of being one of the intellectually stunted strawmen that Klosterman sets up in his introduction. But ultimately decided that reading beyond the fourth chapter of the book was a waste of time.

For me I wear the Black Hat fails on all fronts. It's neither a well reasoned and cogent treatise that one can use to better understand the world, nor is it an enjoyable and irreverent romp, instead its notable for being incompletely reasoned and a bit self-important.

Definitely not worth the read.

If you like Klosterman you'll like this book - possibly the best yet
By Freysquire
I would have to assume that most people enjoy reading Klosterman because: (1) he is a good writer, (2) he is interesting, (3) he is relatable, and (4) he writes on topics that appeal to a certain generation (born 1970 -1990). Having read Cocoa Puffs, Dinosaur, Killing Yourself, IV, etc., I will say that this book is consistent with the reasons why we enjoy Klosterman. In fact, this was probably the best one yet (my personal preference is to read a book with a central theme about something interesting such as "good vs. evil" rather than occasional essays on music bands I don't necessarily relate to -- though there is some of that too).

I find that the reviews that criticize Klosterman's ideas or express disagreement with his conclusions are probably missing the point - the questions he raises are just as important as his assertions. You don't have to agree. The Amazon summary is exactly correct: "Klosterman continues to be the only writer doing whatever it is he's doing." Fans of his other books will enjoy this.

Enjoyable, but not one of his better books
By Chance Briggs
I'm a big fan of Chuck Klosterman and I enjoyed his previous books Cocoa Puffs, Dinosaur, Killing Yourself, IV, Fargo Rock City, etc. For those unfamiliar with Klosterman, his non-fiction works (I haven't read either of his novels) have recurring tics: dilations on perceived reality, an argumentative insistence that frequently derided pop-culture objects are, in fact, great (assertions more or less in favor of the Eagles), segues from one seemingly unrelated topic into another.

I would say that there are a few articles worth reading. First, his examination on how Muhammad Ali's more questionable '70s actions (such as smearing Joe Frazier) are clear and concise. Second, was the essay comparing gossip blogger Perez Hilton, Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom, and WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange's statements of self-justification to consider what their actions and rationales mean for the future of privacy and technology.

However, I felt this book was one of Klosterman's weakest efforts. First, the book was only about two hundred pages. Second, while some of his juxtapositions made sense: a chapter on '80s subway shooter Bernhard Goetz is interspersed with musings on Death Wish 2 and Batman. Yet others strive for impossible synthesis: one chapter compares Fred Durst, Chevy Chase, Howard Cosell, Aleister Crowley, and Sarah Palin. The individual points stand up reasonably well on their own, but no broader point emerges.

Overall, most of the topics in the book, though, are long-settled and untimely, and there's a distinct sense of Klosterman spinning his wheels while digging through his mental archives for rants he hasn't had a chance to use in print yet.

The Antarctic Journals of Reginald Skelton: The Photographic Record of Captains Scott's First Antarctic Expedition, by Judy Skelton

The Photographic Record of Captains Scott's first Antarctic Expedition, 100s of previously unseen pictures Reginald Skelton Offical Photographer To Captain Scott's Discovery Expedition Reginald Skelton Was Chief Engineer, And Offical Photographer To Captain Scott's Discovery Expedition; Words from his Grand daughter: My memories of my grandfather are of an old, but still fit and upright, man who had a deep gravelly voice and chuckled a lot. I was only ten when he died in 1956 and he never, as far as I can remember, told me anything about his time in the Antarctic. Forty two years after his death we had, in a sense, changed places and I was getting the full story. By then into my fifties, seated in the library at the Scott Polar Research Institute (SPRI) in Cambridge, I began reading the Antarctic journals of Reginald Skelton, not yet out of his twenties, who had been chosen as Scott's chief engineer on the Discovery Expedition. Directly outside the window in front of my desk was the building site which was to become the bright, airy Shackleton Memorial Library. The archivist, Bob Headland, apologised for the terrible noise of the construction work, which he feared would frustrate any attempt to concentrate, but all I could hear was the sound of the Discovery's bows scrunching through the pack ice and the howl of the Antarctic wind as the ship fought to hold her own in the teeth of storm force Southerly squalls off Coulman Island. Since then I have been back to Cambridge to read the seven volumes of Reginald Skelton's Discovery Journals, and his sledging diaries, more times than I can keep track of but every time something new catches my attention. There is a freshness in this account, written by a young man describing events even as they take place, as he experiences them without knowing what is to follow, which is lost in any retrospective telling of the tale. Through the publication of this book I hope many other people, who would not otherwise have the opportunity to read the original journals, will be able to share the pleasure of vicarious participation in the Expedition. There is another purpose in bringing this book to the public. Skelton, whose name is by no means universally known, was, nevertheless, an important member of the Expedition and many books about Discovery include quotations from his journals. Since becoming familiar with the journals, I have found out that not all these passages are faithfully reproduced. I am aware of at least two supposedly scholarly books which contain misquotations from Skelton's journals. Whereas innocent mistakes can be made in interpreting hand-written documents, the distortion in some instances is of an order which suggests deliberate misrepresentation. The present book gives all serious students of the history of Antarctic exploration access to the full authentic text.

About the Author
JUDY SKELTON - a profile Judy acquired the taste for travel early in life when the family accompanied her father, an officer in the Royal Navy, on postings to Malta and Gibraltar in the 1950s. Her career, in the voluntary sector of international development, involved living in a number of distinctly warm places, including India, Mexico and Tanzania. Then, in 1997, unaware of the consequences it would have, Judy read a travel book about Antarctica. She had grown up knowing that her grandfather, Reginald Skelton, had accompanied Captain Falcon Scott on his Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic from 1901-4, and she had occasionally dipped into her father's books about it, but now she was seized with the desire to know about Reginald's experiences in detail. A visit to the Ross Sea area of Antarctica, including McMurdo Sound where Discovery was moored for over two years, further fired her newfound enthusiasm. Judy then had to find a part-time job to enable her to spend time in the archives of the Scott Polar Research Institute (SPRI) in Cambridge, to which Reginald had bequeathed all his Antarctic papers: journals, correspondence and technical documents. At first, she intended simply to read these papers, but before long, with the encouragement of SPRI staff, she found herself working with another Discovery descendant on "Discovery Illustrated: Pictures from Captain Scott's First Antarctic Expedition", a book to celebrate the centenary of the start of the expedition. The success of "Discovery Illustrated", which had included quotations from Reginald's graphic and lively journals, encouraged Judy to bring their full text to publication, under the title "The Antarctic Journals of Reginald Skelton: Another Little Job for the Tinker" to celebrate the centenary of the expedition's return. She is currently working on two further projects related to Reginald Skelton: An illustrated catalogue of Discovery photographs (Reginald was in charge of photography on the expedition); a monograph on the early development of motorised sledges, on which Reginald worked with Captain Scott between his two Antarctic expeditions. She is also considering the possibility of a biography of Reginald Skelton. The 'Friends of SPRI' exist to support the work of SPRI, principally through fund-raising, and Judy has served on the committee for some years, currently as Treasurer. Sponsored events are a major source of the Friends' income, and in 2006 Judy went on their first 'Great Dog-Sledging Challenge' in Arctic Norway. She hopes to go trekking in Greenland on a future event. In 2007, Judy and her grandfather were the subject of a Radio 4 programme in a series on inheritance.

Short Stories (Dover Thrift Editions), by Louisa May Alcott

Before she wrote Little Women — one of the most popular books for children ever written — Louisa May Alcott (1832–1888) served during the Civil War as a volunteer nurse in Washington, D.C. Drawing on that episode in her life, she produced Hospital Sketches, a fictionalized account of her experiences at the military hospital in Georgetown.
This collection of five poignant short stories contains two pieces from Hospital Sketches, published in 1863: "Obtaining Supplies," recounting the obstacles Alcott's fictionalized persona, Tribulation Periwinkle, faced in gaining her independence and getting to Washington; and "A Night," a moving account of her encounter with a dying soldier. Also included are "My Contraband," a gripping tale of vengeance involving a Civil War nurse, her Confederate patient and his former slave; "Happy Women," a fictionalized essay about four "spinsters" with a positive attitude toward their marital status; and "How I Went Out to Service," an autobiographical sketch of a young woman's undaunted pursuit of financial independence.
Rich in their simple eloquence, these stories provide revealing glimpses of the concerns and literary techniques of one of America's most admired authors.

A solid collection of Alcott's stories
By Michael J. Mazza
The Dover Thrift Edition of "Short Stories" by Louisa May Alcott contains 5 pieces: "Obtaining Supplies," "A Night," "My Contraband," "Happy Women," and "How I Went Out to Service." The book includes a brief introductory note on the life and career of Alcott.
The first two stories are from Alcott's "Hospital Sketches"; together with the third story, they deal with protagonists who work as nurses for Civil War soldiers. "My Contraband" has as a key theme the legacy of slavery. "Happy Women" is more of a sketch celebrating single women, and the final piece tells the "serio-comico experience" of a young woman who goes to work as a domestic companion.
I read this book shortly after reading Alcott's novel "The Inheritance," written when she was only 17; that simple but charming work makes for a fascinating contrast with the polished maturity of the pieces in this volume. Overall, this collection shows Alcott's wit, humor, compassion for humanity, attentive eye, and particular concern for women's issues. This short (55 + vii pages) book is a wonderful collection by one of the most remarkable figures in American literature.

A charming array of little stories
By Heather Tiemens
Many of these brief but captivating stories are lovely, but one in particular captured my interest, and that was about the secret lives of silverware. There are other nonsensical but entertaining stories in this volume, all of which are perfect to read aloud to young children. The fact that these are lesser known makes it an all the more intriguing addition to your library. Simply enchanting!

Early short stories still show great talent.
By A Customer
Even though Miss Alcott didn't have as much writing experience when she wrote these short stories, they are still a wonderful read. The first two stories are from 'Hospital Sketches'and are wonderful. "A Night" is a gripping acount based on her experience as a Civil War nurse. In the story a nurse is staying up all night with a dying soldier. The story is beautiful. "My Contraband" is a sad tale of how the war and slavery tore apart families. The last two stories are an enjoyable read also. Hey, for 90 cents this book is more than worth the price. If you like Louisa May Alcott, you won't be dissapointed with these stories, so give this book a try.

Estupendas narraciones breves que tienen como personajes centrales a mujeres en diferentes circunstancias de la vida. Se ve gran captación de parte del autor del espíritu femenino en la Italia de postguerra. Lo recomiendo

Review
Mary English well understands how those having the Sun in Scorpio need to trust people more before they're willing to spill the beans about their deeper selves. But Mary's not one who's easily intimidated. She shines a bright light on some of Scorpio's inner motives in ways that can help loved ones to better understand these complex individuals. Her book is just what a novice needs as she delivers in an easy-going style of writing. She knows how to make astrology a very human and accessible subject to study!

From the Author
Why the title of this book? My first book How to Survive a Pisces was written to help people understand the sign that I am: Pisces. When the book was accepted for publication, I was told that this was only on the understanding that I didn't just write one book. More spookily the publisher himself is also a Pisces, so it sort of made sense that he might accept my book for publication...I only found this out afterwards but it set me thinking that maybe life isn't just a random event.
When I'd finished the first book clients and friends (and family) asked me when was I going to write about their sign...and this series of books was born.

I work as an Astrologer 'on the front line' and I have first hand knowledge of the worries and upsetments that clients come to me with, and this book is written from that perspective. It's not written for those that are having a wonderful life, full or roses, happy faces and contentment.

No, it's written to help those people struggling with Life the Universe and Everything (as fellow Pisces Douglas Adams said) and especially with the 8th sign of the Zodiac: Scorpio.
You might be a Scorpio yourself, or your child/partner or relative or friend is one. You might want to learn a little about Astrology, which I shall explain, or more importantly a little about how a Scorpio thinks and lives their life.
As each book is written with examples from 'real life' it was funny when I posted onto my facebook page: 'are there any Scorpios who want to share their thoughts with me?' and after a few hours I was getting messages in my inbox (as opposed to on my wall where I had written this)
Personal private messages.
How Scorpio that was!

right on the mark!!
By mirmo
I found this book really enjoyable to read. Many parts had me smiling and actually laughing out loud because they were so true of me, being a scorpio. I don't normally read books on horoscopes or astrology, but the title and opening pages drew me in. The style is very casual and easy to read, in a very friendly manner. I am looking forward to reading Mary's other books and "checking up" to see if she's right about my friends too!! Bravo, Mary!!

Scrumptiously Secretive Scorpions
By DarkwingLady
Sweet.

So here's that book about Scorpions. Us. The Scary Sadistic Seeing ones.

True - and not true. We are who we are and if it shakes you, sorry. NOT.

Unless you are someone we care about, we couldn't care less.

Love this book. I do, indeed. Absolutely, positively LOVE it. She makes us understandable without spilling ALL the beans and she respect privacy, Ms. English does. She tells you some interesting things that you don't know before about our tribe, our history, plus some things about astrology.

It's worth it, I promise you.

Go ahead.

Get this book.

Read it. Learn about we Scorpions and how to make us...'concede'.

As far as we can and will, that is. *smirk*

We'll only change for our own reasons, only a very small bit because we love you...and this should interest you because you have to deal with us, yes? Wouldn't you like to know how to make us bearable to live with, how to stay alive without us even if you can't really forget us?

She'll tell you. Go on, just do it. What else do you have to lose anyway...?

Beware of the Scorpio
By Ashtar Command
Hmmm…a little astrology guide to Scorpio, written by a Piscean, claiming that Scorps aint that dangerous… Considering that Pisces is the floppiest sign of the zodiac, I wonder if we can trust the word of this Neptunian native? Besides, I read in reputable sources that Scorpios have Pisceans UNDER TOTAL CONTROL, so everything written by Mary Queen of the English should be taken with a large grain of salt. She's under their Plutonian spell. Also, both the language and the editing of “How to Win the Trust of a Scorpio” is floppy in the extreme, which figures since this is a sequel to Mary's first book, which really was titled “How to Survive a Pisces”. The facts in this slender book are astrologically correct as far as they go, but how far (or deep) they *do* go, that's the question…

The Gargoyle Book: 572 Examples from Gothic Architecture (Dover Architecture), by Lester Burbank Bridaham

Amid the soaring grandeur of arches and spires lurks a more down-to-earth architectural flourish: the grinning head of a gargoyle. Singly and clustered, these intriguing creatures form as distinctive an element of Gothic architecture as the flying buttress. Nowhere are they more prominent than along the walls of French cathedrals, and this magnificently illustrated volume prowls the ramparts of those medieval buildings to discover hundreds of authentic gargoyle carvings.
According to tradition, the gargoyles were posted as sentries, to ward off malevolent spirits and to remind parishioners of the evil beyond the church doors. Author Lester Burbank Bridaham takes a more optimistic view. Noting the stone guardians' whimsical nature, he discusses the artisanal ingenuity involved in their creation. He also points out how they represented a rare sense of freedom in the Middle Ages, in terms of public satire and unbridled artistic enthusiasm. As this book reveals, the timeless appeal of the gargoyle—whether symbolic, spiritual, decorative, or fanciful—continues to captivate the imagination.

Misleading new title for the reprint of a very old book.
By MissiLe
BOOHOO...

'The Gargoyle Book: 572 Examples from Gothic Architecture'

A very misleading title!!!

When I pre-ordered this book I was hoping for a brand new publication with 200+ pages on gargoyles and 572 illustrations of gargoyles in architecture.

BOOHOO... This book isn't new, it isn't all about gargoyles and it isn't all about architecture. So what is it about?

Well... it's about nothing really.

It's just a collection of old black and white photographs of French gothic sculptures -in stone and wood-.

QUOTE: This 2006 edition by Dover Publications is an unabridged republication of the work originally published in 1930 by the Architectural Book Publishing Co under the title 'Gargoyles,Chimeres and the Grotesque in French Gothic Sculpture'. END OF QUOTE.

Now that's a better title.

The book starts with eight and a half pages of introduction.

Next are 204 pages with old black and white photographs, accompanied by VERY short descriptions which give us the name of the building, the name of the city and occasionally what it depicts or when the sculpture was made.

At the end of the book there's a four and a half page bibliography.

The photographs are divided into eight chapters:

I: Symbolic Details (12 pages/38 photographs with descriptions such as: Bourges-(Cher) Sainte Marthe)

II: Non-Symbolic Details (2 pages/8 photographs, example: Animals Drink Out of a Jar, Poitiers (Vienne) Oriental Motif)

III: Tympanum Sculpture (8 pages/14 photographs, example: Reims (Marne) Devils - XIIIth Century)

IV: Gargoyles(57 pages/153 photographs, unfortunately about a third of these are not gargoyles, but grotesques)

V: Chimeres (36 pages/98 photographs, some of these show the same statues from a different angle)

VI: Heads (25 pages/73 Photographs)

VII: Capitals and Miscellaneous Compositions (18 pages/62 photographs)

VIII: Woodwork (46 pages/125 photographs, the majority of these are misericordes)

---:

On some of the pages the photographs are printed sideways, so you're constantly tilting your head or turning the book.

There are up to four photographs on each page with fairly wide margins, so most photographs are rather small.

The cameras and photographic materials available in 1930 didn't produce the quality of images that we are used to in modern times.

+++:

Loads of photographs (I've never seen so many misericordes in any other book).

Who should NOT buy this book:

.You like glossy colorful photographs that would look fab in a frame.

.You want lots of info about how or why these sculptures are made.

.You're looking for a coffee table book.

.You want to know exactly where on/in the building the sculptures can be found.

If this describes you: KEEP LOOKING. There are better books out there for you.

Who might enjoy this book:

.You don't mind old black and white photographs.

.You're REALLY into misericordes, gargoyles, chimeres and anything else that the ancient French dreamed about.

.You're not put off by the lack of information.

If that is you: It's a cheap book with loads of pics, so why not GO FOR IT.

Why three stars:

I wanted to give only one star because the title is so misleading and the book is not really suitable for the average gargoyle fan.

The second star is because the paperback quality is okay.

I gave a third star because the book inspires me in my work as an animator.

I nearly took the third star away because there are other books with better photographs.

But I left the third star on because none of the other books have so many photographs.

So why the big BOOHOO at the start of my review?

Well... I already had the 1930 original edition.

Am I going to throw this new paperback away?

Hell no... It's good value for money.

I can now look at the pics in this cheap reprint, fold corners over, splash ink and paint around while I'm working and still keep my original 1930 book in excellent condition.

Now then... where's my paintbrush?

All Photos...

572 Photos of Gargoyles with minimal commentary. Most of the photos are old and not reproduced well or enhanced, so detail is rarely visible. But the book is useful as an overview of Gothic inspired Gargoyles.
