A Stunning Coclusion

Stunned. Utterly stunned. That's my initial reaction to finishing Rachel Caine's Terminated. I'm kind of left reeling, wondering if this is the final novel in the series, making it a trilogy. I don't remember hearing one way or another the length of this series, but this one definitely leaves me wondering if I read the end!

Brynn's basically had a tough time these past few weeks...months? The actual length of time for the duration of these past 3 books is escaping me, so not sure how long it's been for her, but it's been tough to say the least! She died and was brought back with the drug, Returne. Becoming a sort of modern day zombie, and then after being tortured by her boyfriend, Patrick's ex-wife Jane, she's been changed into a sort of super zombie with different types of nanonites that take residence in her body. Giving her extra strength and faster healing abilities.

Now Brynn and her crew are on a mission and that is to stop Jane once and for all. It ends up boiling down to needing to find a particular cure that could stop Jane by making her mortal once again. But it's tough trying to locate said cure when Jane and her military cronies are constantly chasing after them. Plus, it seems like Jane is always one step ahead. Nowhere is safe.

Brynn is struggling to adapt to her, yet again, new self. She craves meat, the raw bloody kind most commonly found in humans...that being their flesh. She finds she's able to get by with just about any other good source of protein, such as very rare meats and things like beef jerky, lots of beef jerky. Riley is in the same boat as she is, so she at least knows she's not alone in this tremulous time.

It was quite the exciting read, although I have to say that after reading a nice richly paranormal infused Urban Fantasy read, coming to this one that lacked strong paranormal elements was a sort of major withdrawal for me. Granted, Brynn is still zombie-esque, but she's not the rotting flesh, eat brains kind of girl. And no other paranormals exist in this world...that we know of.

It was definitely a kind of fast paced read at some points since Brynn and her friends seem to constantly be on the run, getting into dangerous situations, but it did have its slower moments. Little excursions that kind of dragged a bit before the new information was learned or something really dicey happened. And at one point, I felt like a new unknown enemy was on the rise, but it never really came up again, so it has me wondering if my theory was totally unfounded. But still, it was a very engaging read.

Brynn and Patrick still had very little time for romance and had to steal moments when they could. I felt bad for them. Plus their situation is pretty surreal. Brynn's a living zombie...never to age, never to have children. Her life is set and as long as there is meat for her to eat, that's what her life will be like forever. So it was kind of sad in a sense, feeling like this couple might just not be meant to be.

I have to say that the ending was pretty explosive! Not in a literal sense either, since all the explosions happened during the course of the running for their lives and all that jazz! I was totally blown away by what happened and then a shocking end result! Which is what has me reeling and wondering if this is the end of the series. Was The Revivalist Novels meant to be a trilogy? Well, guess I'll have to find out!

Rachel Caine is an amazing author! Her Weather Wardens series was yet again, one of my first adult novels when I took a break from YA. I've stuck with her ever since, although I still have yet to read her YA series. Although I can still remember when I met her a few years back...before Weather Wardens ended, she was telling me about her yet unnamed Morganville Vampires! So I really ought to get on that!

WOW what an ending to a great UF trilogy

While I enjoyed books 1 & 2 they were a bit slower but Caine saved all the real action for the finale. WOW. Just WOW! Terminated is a fast paced, non-stop adrenaline rush from page one to the last page. Bryn and the gang didn't get a minute's rest.

Caine put Bryn through hell. From being blown up by an IED, hit by a semi truck, shot multi times, once in between the eyes and another in the heart by the man she loves to being burnt in a raging fire but it's all in the life of Bryn 2.0. There's even a part where Bryn guts herself in order to save herself and her friends.

Bryn is no longer the mild-mannered ex-military gal working at a funeral home. She's been killed more times than I can count and brought back by the drug Returne that reanimate the dead with nano-bot technology. But when we last saw Bryn in Two Week's Notice she got an upgrade and she now has the constitution of the Terminator, or the Energizer Bunny. She just keeping going and going. And with the upgrade she no longer needs the daily shots for Returne to keep her from decomposing. Great news right? Well now she has another problem. Now she craves protein to keep those little nano-bots working. Protein as in bloody meat, either in the from of a rare steak or the nearest human. And the harder she is damaged the harder the hungry hits her.

The makers of Returne, Pharmadene is out of the picture. Now the group is working to find the new group response behind the upgraded program, the Fountain Group. And with the new group, we are dealing with government conspiracies and off the grid ex-military and militia types that Bryn's boyfriend, Patrick uses to get them to safety while leaving Bryn wondering who the man she loves really is. All the while being chased by Patrick's cray cray ex-wife, Jane, who just happens to be just like Bryn... hard to kill. But Jane is a total psychopath.

Caine has woven a great story where Urban Fantasy meets Science Fiction Thriller.

Great End to the Series

When author Rachel Caine decides to do something, she does it with gusto. And that's exactly what she's done with her zombie series, The Revivalist.

In the first book in the series, Working Stiff, Caine introduced readers to her spin on the zombie novel. The premise: a pharmaceutical company created a drug that can bring people back from the dead... as long as the dead get their daily shots of the nanotech drug. The protagonist Bryn is infected (after she's killed) and is forced to work for the company in order to get the nanotech drugs to keep her ...undead. In the second book in the series, Two Weeks Notice, Bryn discovered the plot to use the drugs goes even further, including making a military version of the drug that supercharges the nanotech, allowing its users to become weapons that can't be stopped or killed. Unfortunately this militarized version of the nanotech has a few side effects, including requiring high levels of meat on a pretty often basis, and the nanotech isn't doesn't discriminate where it's from, even when it comes from humans, dead or alive. And if all that wasn't bad enough, Bryn is infected with it.

Now, in Terminated Caine finishes her revivalist trilogy with a bang.

In Terminated Caine takes her already action packed series and ratchets it up a few dozen notches. Because Bryn is virtually unkillable, Caine tries to kill her in quite a few new and disturbing ways. Bryn is shot, burned, hit by a truck, beaten, and forced to dig through her own intestines. So if you're the queasy sort, this book might be a bit much for you. But if you enjoy non-stop action and well placed tension, then I'd fully recommend this series.

Of course, Caine doesn't just offer up blind action without also giving the readers some truly fascinating psychological drama as well. As Bryn's condition continues to change, making her a threat to others, including her friends and lover, readers are given the chance to see inside Bryn's head. Bryn's inner struggle with what she is becoming and what she has done is really well done. Not only that but it is constantly shifting, and with the ever increasing timeline for the release of her nanotech, Caine does a fantastic job flushing it out.

All in all, I really liked this series and felt Caine did a great job with its ending. It's very hard for authors to nail an ending, but Caine has done a fantastic job creating an ending that truly surprised me, while at the same time left me satisfied. If you're looking for an interesting take on the zombie novel that has more action than you can shake a stick at, then look no further than Caine's newest completed series, The Revivalist Series.

This story will take its place among great prison escapes from unjust imprisonment .

This is an excellent account of one man's life,the author.It tells what it was like for a young man living in Northern Ireland and how unjust and brutal the British were towards those who disagreed with them.It leaves the reader with no doubts as to who,what and why the Irish fought back,were executed,jailed and in every way discriminated against by their own government.Here is a man ,18 years old,who was jailed for 10 years,for no other reason than being suspected of belonging to an "outlawed" organization,and whose only reason for existing was to end prejudice,hate,and to obtain freedom and liberty from oppression.
He was sent to Crumlin Road Gaol (Jail) in Belfast,during the 1956-1972 campaign of resistance to British in Northern Ireland.This prison was so secure,it was used to hold the worst of criminals,and known throughout Europe as so impregnable to escape,as Europe,s Alcatraz.
This is Danny Donnelly's,story of how he, as a "political prisoner" and others were treated while in prison and how he managed the impossible,and escaped.It tells in detail how he was hunted down ,but also helped by many to continue his life as a free man.
The book does not just end with his successful escape;but also details what he did with his life after.
If you really want to understand what the struggle of the Irish wanting to get out from the unjust rule and oppression of the British in Northern Ireland is all about;there is no better way of finding out that hearing about it from someone who personally experienced it.
While there has been some improvement in Northern Ireland ,the killings and problems haven't been eliminated;nor are they likely to be as long as the British are in control;the determination and desire for the Irish to rid themselves of British rule will continue,and eventually succeed.A song about the "rebels" of 1916 in the Irish Republic still holds true in Northern Ireland;

Gripping and revelatory

Donal's memoir about his life, particularly his dramatic escape, is riveting not only in the drama of the escape itself, but in revealing the injustices perpetrated in Northern Ireland in those times. With no hint of bitterness, Donal open one's eyes to the reality of social injustices and helps us be more conscious of the same nowadays. Can't wait for the movie!

Educational, Wonderful!

What a wonderful, well written book! Being a US resident, I have read about the history of Ireland but never quite understood the true issues that have occurred. Having met Mr. Donnelly on a recent visit to Ireland, it was wonderful to first listen to him tell of his adventures but even better to know that he had written this wonderful book and that I would be able to bring it back to the States and share his story with others. He certainly has a way of telling a story verbally and in writing!

This is a must carry-on if you are traveling to India, are a beginner learning to speak Hindi or are trying to smply Brush-up on your speaking skills. Navigating thru the book is really easy -- no need to fumble at all! Key phrases and words that are a staple of the Hindi Language are all included -- even multiple words. An excellent buy & investment. Quick references will truly come in quite handy.

Great Little Book

This book is great for beginners learning Hindi. My husband is Indian and when I received this book and starting saying the words and sentences he was impressed on how quickly and correctly I could speak! Of course, I'm not even close to fluent...but it's nice to start out on the right foot! I recommend this if you want to start learning Hindi. It's a small book so great for sticking in your purse and taking it with everywhere :)

Nice Little Book

This book includes common questions and phrases one would need to survive a trip to India. It's inexpensive price makes it a great bargain.
Expressions are written in both Devanagari and Roman transliteration. The transliteration does a decent job of conveying how to pronounce Hindi words, but keep in mind that Hindi sounds are softer than English ones.
'teen' (Hindi for 3) sounds quite different from English 'teen.'

Solid Intro to Special Relativity and Non-Euclidean Geometry

In his own introduction the author, Mr. R. Rucker, states, "My goal has been to present an intuitive picture of the curved space-time we call home. There are a number of excellent introductions to the separate topics treated here, but there has been no prior weaving of them into a sustained visual account. I looked for a book like this for many years- and finding none, I wrote it." His dedication has been rewarded, as the text is one of the finer introductory books on the curvature of space time and special relativity.
The 'book like this' as the author calls it, walks the reader through several visual explanations that allow a solid mathematical and graphical explanation of modern physics. This isn't always a simple explanation, but there is a certain reward to struggling with the concepts before understanding them. In particular, Chapter 4 on time as a higher dimension makes the entire book worth reading, with many fascinating examples and a host of thought-provoking examples, such as "Schrodinger's Cat."
This is a very interesting book which would be of use to anyone who wishes to push just a little bit further than the typical popular physics text. For those who wish to push even further to solidify their knowledge, there are even questions at the end of each chapter. I highly recommend this book.

Weird in all the right ways

I really enjoy Rudy Rucker's nonfiction, and some of his fiction too (_White Light_ is great). He's very good at presenting mind-blowingly cool ideas in accessible expository prose, and he knows _just_ when to throw in the bombs.
This particular book is published by Dover, and it's not one of their usual reprints; it was _originally_ published by Dover. (In 1977, but the geometry of spacetime hasn't changed much since then.) It's an exploration of just what the title says: the geometry of the four-dimensional spacetime that the theory of relativity says is Really Out There.
Well, this is a good book on the subject, but you can get others (although one of the best -- Cornelius Lanczos's delightful _Space Through the Ages_ -- has long been out of print). What's coolest about this one is that Rudy Rucker wrote it.
Which means you get those little bombs thrown in at all the right places. Of course Rucker gives you what any competent mathematician will give you -- a sound introductory presentation of the mathematics of 4D spacetime and relativity theory, which are weird enough if you haven't encountered them before (and maybe even if you have) -- but he doesn't stop there. You also get an argument that the apparent passage of time is an illusion, and a little speculation about how this might tie in with the Many-Worlds Interpretation of quantum mechanics. And even that isn't all: you get a suggestion that it's possible to _develop a spacetime consciousness_ via some sort of meditation techniques or mystical insight, together with an entry in the annotated bibliography referring you (cautiously) to Robert A. Monroe's _Journeys Out of the Body_, whose experiments Rucker himself has tried.
It's like Raymond Smullyan on acid, if you know what I mean. But honest, it really does make sense. And it really will knock your mind loose from your brain even without the use of chemical aids.
This is the sort of thing Rucker does best. He does it in _Infinity and the Mind_, too (with which this volume has a little bit of overlap, but you won't care). Check out that book as well, along with _White Light_. Mathematical hippie mysticism just doesn't get any better.

Now I get it!!!

Yes, finally, I get the hoopla with the fourth dimension. Rucker explains things with lots of classsical geometric illustrations. Not intending to scare you, I must warn you that he takes the reader all the way to a 5-dimensional world. Still, it is simple to explain, because he uses line-land (the 2-dimansional version of flatland) adds a dimension, then one more, and the result can be visualized in 3-D. I am just astounded that I could understand this without mind-crunching effort. It was not an easy read, but it was not very hard either. No derivatives, matrixes, integrals, or any of the other off-putting versions of mathematics. Just straight (actually fairly wrinkled) geometry.

I have loved writing the three 'Beard In Nepal' books, and that's because we had such a good time in Nepal (and the other countries mentioned in 'Beard 3') and met such wonderful, memorable people there.
I have tried to write the books in the way in which I 'saw' the situations that we found ourselves in, so at times the way I have used the English language may appear slightly odd!
I do hope you enjoy reading them.

About the Author
Fiona Roberts was born in Liverpool. She taught English in Paris for 9 years, and then returning to England, taught in Canterbury and Folkestone. She was married to Billy Roberts, a medium, and for several years ran an agency promoting his work, and the work of other psychics and mediums. She also wrote books for him.
Now happily married to Tod the couple spent 5 months in Nepal in 2009 teaching English in an isolated village not far from Everest Base Camp. They returned there in 2011. Those trips have changed their lives. Fiona is a working medium and gives private readings. She also works part time in an office in inner city Liverpool, dealing with the public.

Beards Are the Mostest

Here’s what I learned: Nepal has a lot of icky leeches; people in Nepal treat dogs badly; there are a lot of flies and trash; they grow a lot of pot in Chitwan; drivers and driving is crazy; people like foreigners’ beards; it is really hard to walk up mountains when you are out of shape. There are hints of a more complex, interesting world: the author talks about a Bhuddist cemetery, but then she later says most people have pictures of Hindu gods in their homes. There is no explanation about these two religions--who celebrates one and who the other, or why, or what sorts of tensions might accompany those divisions –there is just, well, nothing.
Not only can I not believe this was actually published, but even more incredible are the positive reviews this “book” received. Basically, this is an extended version of a 6th-grade “What I Did For My Summer Vacation“ essay. And now, I see volumes 2 and 3—witlessness is apparently no obstacle to success.
If you want something actually worth reading, then try While the Gods Were Sleeping—you might pick up some Nepali, and maybe even have a slightly better understanding of politics and social relations. But then again, you won’t learn anything about beards . . .

Especially enjoyable were the tales of the school with its enthusiastic classes of happy kids whose smiles and giggles never ceased to show their appreciation. The 'Great See-Saw Day' aptly showed the difference between primary school life on a Nepalese mountain side and the techno-filled classrooms in the UK.

Highly recommended for travellers and teachers plus any reader who wants an exciting and humorous arm-chair adventure.

Fioina Roberts went to Nepal to teach the children in a mountain village. She tells her story and her husband's in a humorous way, but takes you to Nepal and it's traditions. You feel like you are really there. It is cold, steep roads, hard beds, and a loving people so interested in a Westerner. No where does she go without an audience. A wonderful read, and there is a sequel too!

The Adventures of Chet and Bernie Continue in THE SOUND AND THE FURRY

Bestselling author Spencer Quinn returns with his lovable characters Chet and Bernie in this new mystery set in my neck of the woods, the South. Bringing the duo to a new location full of the same kind of shady characters and mystery they are used to, we the reader are able to see that trouble can be found everywhere.

Tasked with the job of finding a man named Ralph Bourette, the duo quickly discover that in the bayous of Louisiana some people would rather keep their secrets and their dealings buried. When Bernie seems to be closing in on what's going on with those around him, we see Chet once again stepping up and using his own form of deduction to help his partner---sometimes with humorous consequences.

There's a lot at play in this book, as one job for the pair turns into a realization that powerful interests are also at work in what's going on. For Chet some of the events they are facing remind him of his previous life, giving us yet another layer to this intelligent creature. There is also the importance of lessons learned when it comes to survival, something that Chet draws on when he finds himself having to tread water in order to survive.

In the end it becomes obvious to all why these two are so closely connected, and it is that bond that makes this book yet another great read of friendship and adventure.

Whether you are new to Chet and Bernie or have followed them all the way through their journey, THE SOUND AND THE FURRY is definitely a book you will be entertained by from beginning to end.

Smitten

A mystery told from the voice of the detective's side-kick, a dog. Oh please. I was hesitant to start this series, but a friend had recommended it so I read beyond the first few pages. And then... I kept reading, and reading, and before I knew it I was completely smitten. Since that time, I've devoured every book that Chet has narrated about his adventures at the Little Detective Agency. While each book is full of silly word play and misunderstandings, there is brilliance in this series. The characters are unique and lovable. The stories are thrilling, but funny too. The dialogue is pitch perfect. And there's something about how the narrator Chet tells you one thing, but you come away seeing something very different that makes the reading experience a delight and will leave you thinking, "How did Quinn do that?"

If you love books with a great narrator voice like those of of Nick Hornby, Sherman Alexie, Mark Twain, and Alexander McCall Smith, you will love this book too. While it's hard to put down and makes you laugh out loud, it sneaks across that threshold of popular fiction and into the literary realm.

Another great read! Could not put it down. Chet is a entertaining as ever, and Bernie is the best. I wish Spencer Quinn could write these books as fast as I can read them.

THRILLING WESTERN ACTION!!!!!!!!!

Lawrence Shaw, also known as Fast Larry, has come to the town of Somas Santos when he hears that his wife has been murdered by a group of killers including Barton Talbert and Blue Snake Terril. But Shaw won't be riding the vengence trail alone. An old friend, Cray Dawson, for reasons of his own, will be riding with Larry to see that Rosa's killers receive their due justice. To make matters worse for Shaw, a group of gamblers have put a price on Shaws head for any man who guns down Fast Larry and the price goes up with each man Shaw kills. On the trail Larry & Cray stop to help a group of traveler whose wagon wheel has busted. Now in addition to the two chasing the Talbert bunch is added Jedson Caldwell, an undertaker by trade, Della Starks and Dillard Frome. After fighting off a band of Comanchero's, the group arrives at the town of Eagle Pass where Sheriff Earnest Neff is holding Talbert's brother Sidlow in jail. Shaw lets Sidlow out of jail and baits him in to a gufight. With the killing of Sidlow, Larry hope to bring Barton to Eagle Pass for a showdown. Two of Talbert's men, Willie "The Devil" Devlin and Donald Hornetti, set up a gunfight between Fast Larry and another gunman in hopes that the gunny will kill Shaw. When this attempt fails, Devlin & Hornetti head out of town to Brackett Flatts to inform Barton Talbert. Shaw has asked Dawson & Caldwell not to back his play as he looks to extract his revenge on Talbert and his bunch at Brackett Flatts. Can one man, even Fast Larry Shaw beat these odds? After all, it's not always the fastest gun who wins, but the one that shoots the straightest. GUNMAN'S SONG is another action filled, fast paced book we have come to expect from Ralph Cottom and as usual, Ralph delivers.

One of the Best Westerns I Ever Read.

I just now finished reading Gunman's Song by Ralph Cotton, and wow! was I impressed. Seriously, I'm a writer myself and I love it when I find a new (new to me anyhow) writer whose work I'm crazy about. This is the first one of Ralph Cotton's books that I've ever read, and it certainly won't be the last. If you like westerns, if you enjoyed Louis L'Amour and you liked Lonesome Dove, then I can pretty well guarantee you'll love Gunman's Song. Cotton can flat out tell a tall tale, he can write like nobody's business.

This is a story of a fast draw gun slinger, who is out for revenge....but it is way more than that. All the characters come alive on the page, the conversations they have are just too cool...I really can't say enough about this book. I've read a few westerns that are heads above all the rest, Lonesome Dove, The Searchers, and I'd put this one right up there with them. It's that good.

One more thing: even if you don't normally read westerns...check this one out. The interplay between the characters is so clean, so sharply focused, the dialog so crisp and interesting, the action so hardnosed and true. You can't beat Gunman's Song...it's just one awesome good western, no two ways about it.

GREASED LIGHTNING WITH A GUN

Greased lightning: both Lawrence Shaw, the story's main character, and the story itself. I'm a little behind in my reading with some Ralph Cotton books, so just getting around to this one from 2004.

The usual cast of characters make their appearance, with the equal doses of comedy and black humor, with the good guys winning out, as usual, in the end. This one, however, has an underlying tone of pathos in that Larry and Cray are on the trail of men who not only abused but also killed Larry's wife. Though I truly enjoy the Sam Burrack ranger books, these books of Cray Dawson are very, very good; hope Ralph continues the saga into the future. As with all Ralph's books the main characters, even some of the bad guys, are very likeable, while the writing from this author is always top drawer.

While "Fast Larry" may be just a mite too large for actual life concerning both guns and women, Dawson helps keep the action and story anchored in reality. And all of Ralph's books use the 'west' for background making them fictional reading at its best.

If you enjoy a good western as I do, having hundreds on my shelves, then you will welcome Ralph Cotton books on your western shelf, too.

While there are 50 charts and 21 patterns for applique, Pamela has only 2 pages that tell you "how to do it." But, the applique patterns alone are worth the price of the book. All Patterns are black and white and color suggestions are given. There are brief descriptions given for loom beading and 2 needle applique.

Book needs more color photographs

As a person who pieces quilts and does beadwork, I usually see an actual quilt or a piece of beadwork OR a color photograph of an item. After viewing an actual item or a photo and appreciating the colors and the pattern, I then decide if I want to make it. While this book has 50 charts for bead weaving and 21 patterns for applique, there are only four pages of photographs showing a total of about 26 items. I was dissappointed that there wasn't a color photo for every design in the book. People want to see what a finished product will look life before taking the time and effort to make it.

About the Author

Katarzyna Michalski is a cultural historian at the University of Tübingen, Germany, and coauthor of the Eyewitness Guide to Munich and the Bavarian Alps. Sergiusz Michalski is professor of art history at the University of Tübingen. His previous books include The New Objectivity and Public Monuments: Art in Political Bondage 1870–1997, also published by Reaktion Books.

Little Miss Muffet was a real person who really hated spiders. Read about human culture and spiders.

I just reread this book and found no review had been written. As is often the case, a rereading can be rewarding. This is one of the earlier books in this series, and a phrase the authors use typifies many of the books, "cultural symbolics." That means more culture and not as much natural history. The writing is good, although a bit Eurocentric. The illustrations are extremely good and extremely varied. Note for parents: this may not be a suitable book for children interested in spiders, because there are several mildly erotic, used to illustrate text about exactly that.

The later chapters will probably interest readers more than the earlier ones, except for the first on natural history. Chapter 4 is on the femme fatale, which often used spiders as symbols; this is the chapter that considers spiders as symbols of the dangerous femme. Chapter 5 considers dreams and psychoanalytic readings of spiders in dreams. Chapter 6 is the best in the book in my opinion, spiders in art and caricature--in this chapter the spider is used as a nasty symbol for Napoleon, Hitler, Russia, Jews (prints by Russians), Nazis and tsar Nicholas, among others. This is an excellent exploration of a sort of artistic trope.

Chapter 7 discusses the spider in myth and folklore, and chapter 8 looks at urban legends regarding the spider. There's also a chapter on the Hollywood spider.
